We do put fish oil in his food as advised by his vet. Thinking of chaning him to BARF to see if getting rid of grains will help at all but he is still in his growth phase and I'm a little worried about that. I did wonder if it was just the time of year and the humidity. Also he does not have frequent baths. We were trying to do once a month as this was recommended by the breeder but they said washing a bit more regulary (fortnighty) would be ok if he is suffering from allergies. Also use an undercoat rake regularly which helps. I'm just really confused about the food stuff. People seem to recommend BARF but there doesn't seem to be much evidence (scientific) behind it (not saying there is behind dry either) and I'm worried his growth rate as he is a large golden.

Yeah I really don't want to shave him! We cut the fur back where the spot is about the size of 10cent peice. The breeder said never ever shave, we use an undercoat rake regularly, bought some quick itch yesterday seems to be helping
-
Show dog, He generally only has lamb bones sometimes beef but not as often. We don't give him chicken as I have noticed his itching can increase. I thought he was doing ok on the eukanuba we changed him from advance to euk and his coat did seem to improve at least.

Has anyone found that changing to BARF helps with itches and hot spots etc? Puppy school recommended it and one vet, but his breeder thought it was a very bad idea and she seems to be fairly reputable.

yeah tried to bribe him with treats last time! works well he loves food
-
he get bones as well as dry food.

He gets checked daily or at the very least every second day give him a quick brush (which he loves) and just check for any new sores/redness. Treating him with quick itch, corisone cream and wound guard (he hates it though I think it must sting)... he will hide in his crate if he sees me coming near him with the creams also hair all trimmed back around any sores. We do have insurance.. just in case. From what I have read they are from fungus/bacteria but begin from a break in the skin which can be caused from scratching (ie allergies)

hmm I will have to research the Eukanuba a bit more it is the large puppy version, I was thinking of changing him to Royal Canin (lab puppy). Just dont like messing with his food too much. He does get very hot when playing and takes a while to cool back down. There is no wandering jew in the yard (removed it all a few months ago and have been keeping a close eye on it as pup loves to eat it if it is around)

Hi, I have a 6month old golden retriever who seems to have rather sensitive skin. He has had a few hot spots over the summer. He plays with another puppy that is mouthy and I have noticed that the next day after playing with this dog sometimes he will have little marks on his belly/hind legs (when he plays he spends alot of time lying on his back) and the last two times he has had a hot spot it has been after playing? I think they are mostly related to allergies but just wondered if playing with other dogs can make them worse? Also if this dog is nipping him harder than it appears. He is fed Eukanuba (large puppy) with meaty bones at the moment thinking of changing him to BARF but not confident in doing that until he is through his growth stage (his breeder recommended not changing his diet at the moment). Hot spots are such horrible things just get his skin healthy again and then they are back!

He is in a XLarge wire crate large enough for an Adult golden (he is a larger puppy). He will happily go in there of his own accord just hates the door being shut. We give him chew toys, kongs, bones etc in there, also if we give him something outside of the crate ie pig ear he will carry it in to the crate to eat it even when the crate is in another room. Guess I was just worry as I know he should be confined at times. But he seems to be pretty well behaved outside of the crate.. and will go in there when he wants alone time. Is it ok to give him that much freedom?

Wire Crate, large enough for an Adult golden (biggest size).

Hi, We have been trying to crate train our 5month golden retriever. When he was younger he would happily play and sleep in his crate with the door closed (given kongs, chew toys etc). Now he is a bit older he refuses to be in there if the door is closed. Will bark and carry on (he has a very loud bark). THis is at night time too so it is hard to ignore. He will go in his crate and sleep/chew if the door is open. He has been sleeping in our room on a bed/mat which he stays on all night but we would prefer him to start sleeping in the crate again with the door shut (which is also in our room). Last night he just chose to alternate between the crate and his mat... Not sure where to go from here. I think he could possibly be getting to hot in his crate?

Yes that is normal. Additionally some Goldens have shorter hair anyway. There is huge variation in coat type and length in the retriever breeds. Is he for showing? no not for showing. Just a pet. Both his parents had thick coats so I guess I just need to be patient

Thanks for the replys. Guess I was just getting sick of people thinking he's a lab. His coat does look similar to your picture crazy daisy (profile pic is a month old).

Hi Everyone, I have a general question, not sure if I am posting in the right area... I have a golden retriever pup... he has quite short hair (getting thicker and longer with some feathering).. not sure if this is normal. Hes about 5months. He is pure bred and was bought from a registered breeder who has been great. Just wondering if his coat is normal for his age? Can't figure out how to post a picture so I made him my profile pic (this is a few weeks ago his coat has improved a little)
