Help! Our Puppy Just Chewed A Hole In The Leather Couch!--upda
siks3 replied to Huntia's topic in Puppy Chat
My 7 month old akita chewed off my water timers then the kids water slide and a hose last night. I walk him every day to the point of exhaustion. He will not chew things in the house but he has enjoyed sleeping outside the last few nights because the weather is cool. Never again he can sleep inside with us. I can't wait until the adolescent stage is finished. -
Advice On How To Handle Ignoring Behaviour
siks3 replied to lovemesideways's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
If my dog ignores me he gets a small leash correction then when he looks at me I treat him then I give the command, He obeys he gets the treat non compliance is a leash correction. Sounds like the dogs training has not been balanced there needs to be a negative when he disobeys. If a dog knows the command you are giving it and it doesn't go through with it it needs a correction. If the dog is simply disobeying you because it is over excited it needs exercise. Sitting here now waiting to get flamed. -
Just asking what are you actually aiming to achieve. If you have goals what diplomatic lawful process are you going to use to achieve your goals. I'm just confused on what you are actually trying to do. Instead of putting the topic private just heavily mod the thread and remove all the flaming rubbish, post a warning at the beginning of the thread. There are a lot of people on here with different back grounds and more people that know what is going on more would help out.

Go onto dogz online and type in "Dog aggression" and plenty of turkeys will stick there necks out.

Who stocks high quality leather leashes? The ones I have seen and looked at seem cheap and not of good quality. I remember the ones I use to buy and can't find any high quality ones around. I'm after good ones not some cheap pet shop rubbish.
-
I'm confused. It seemed that you were prepared to take the dog and provide her with a good home and everything she needs (which of course would include desexing, microchipping, vaccinating, worming, etc and the costs associated). You were aware that she may be pregnant and were still prepared to keep her. The only thing that I can see that's changed your mind is that you've discovered she's inbred and now it's all too much of a hassle. So now she's going to the pound. Just out of curiousity, are your Akita and Foxy desexed? Inbreeding if not done correctly can mean a lot of problems. Desexing the dog would cost me more money then I can afford at this point in time. I would not sell or even give away the pups because I cannot personally guarantee they are going to be healthy ( I do have some understanding and responsibilities in breeding as I have done it in the past). When I first picked up the dog I did not realise it was pregnant. There is an animal shelter here where I live that is helping us. I hope this has answered some questions.
-
My main concern is that the dog has been line bred so badly even the pups are an interbreeding. I have line bred in the past but only when both dogs are exceptional examples of the breed standard when I was breeding GSD. I could not morally let them out to homes as the pups could end up with a world of problems and I'm not going to do that to anybody. Also the dog could end up being more problems then it's worth coming form an unplanned line breeding. I have been offered assistance from a person so thank you all that provided useful posts.

Well I spoke to the mother and father of the girl that use to own the dog and I found out it's history. It is inbred father daughter mating then this dog mated with it's father so I'm taking the dog to the pound it is to much of a hassle. I would not want the pregnancy to go ahead and at the moment I simply cannot afford to get it desexed due to my other dog undergoing surgery and costing me nearly $2000 I would not let the pups go to a new home either. It's just sad that people let things go this way. This poor little thing hasn't had much luck so far.
-
The old owner bred the dog that we took in. She was a pup left over from their litter. The owner is happy it has a home so there is no ownership issues at all it is sad that the poor little thing has been treated this way she still hasn't told us why it was left behind. I think the girl had a domestic violence issue and had to leave quickly. They had another three dogs that they took with them. I have all three dogs separated at this point in time because she has just had her worming medication. I only think she is pregnant and I will find this out on Monday as I am taking my other dog to the vet to get his wounds checked out.

You cant just keep a dog like that you need to go through the pound system - you can ask for her to come to you if the owners are not found. What you are doing is against the law. Seeing that they have moved interstate I don't think it is an issue. Leaving a dog with no water in 35c and not feeding it would be more of a problem for the old owners. Also the 2 dogs are separated i have 2 yards but they are getting along when i supervise them together.

The dog was abandoned at a friends neighbors house. They had moved and the dog was left there for 3 days without food or shelter. So I took her home and she is a sweet little dog and my akita likes her a lot and they get along well. She is a very timid little dog. I am going to let her have the pups and find them good homes. She is a min fox terrier X Chihuahua.

I have adopted a little dog that I just found out is pregnant. What would you do with the pups. I know how everybody is anti back yard breeder but should I give the dogs away to good homes or dispose of them when they are born. I want to know what people think.

I'm going to try to find one from the local shelter that he will hopefully like. He will play with certain other small dogs but not others he is a difficult little fellow. During the day the akita has run of the house inside and out while we are at work as it gets very hot here where I live. The foxy likes to do his own thing and I hope by having a friend he won't get to lonely while we are at work. I'm a bit of a softie and I don't have to have much of an excuse to bring in another poor little dog that needs a home.
-
Well It's been a hectic couple of days and the foxy has had 10cm of intestine removed and his bowl reattached but is doing fine. Thank you to all the people that gave their support. Now I have skim read through a few pages of posts and how come as soon as somebody mentions aggression or dog fight the horns come out. Having these things happen is an unfortunate reality of owning dogs. A dog simply cannot be punished for simply acting like a dog. If give a certain set of circumstances ALL breeds of dog are capable of causing damage to other animals it is not fair to single out one particular breed of dog. The little fox terrier I now have has never been socialized or had any real contact with other dogs. We have done a lot of work on socialisation and other issues like food guarding and snapping at the kids. He was a rescue dog that my father saved because the dog was aggressive and had been abused. The dog only trusted my dad. The thing that simply triggered the fight was the foxy was sitting next to a wall guarding 3 little pieces of kibble (witch I didn't find till afterwards) and my akita followed me past the dog maybe the akita got to close. I was about to walk inside then i heard a "yap yap" and then a scream from the foxy. It all happened so fast by the time I got to them (about 4 steps away) they where well and truly fighting. My akita was small puncture wounds on his leg, a cut on his nose and a tear in his lip. My akita has been very patient with this little dog I guess this time the foxy connected and hurt him so he defended himself this time. I have no issues with leadership in my house and my mother and father when I was younger ran an RSPCA shelter in Burnie Tasmania and they use to breed Working GSD not show pony GSD but protection dogs. They use to hire out dogs to businesses and mining sites during the holidays and week ends. I have come across all types of dogs with a different temperaments. Akitas are a beautiful dog but when larger breeds show signs of aggression towards other dogs for what ever reason most people get terrified. The same behavior would most likely go unnoticed or be ignored in smaller breeds. Now as for rehoming the foxy I have decided to build a small yard at the front of my house so he can still have a quality of life he can watch people walk buy and sit in the sun with out having to worry about the other dog. They will be totally separate from each other. I might even look into getting him a small female friend to share his final days with. I forgot to mention the foxy after my father died lived with my brother for a couple of weeks and because he had small children and with him having problems with the dog I took him in. By this time the akita was already owned by me so the akita did his absolute best in my book to try and be freinds. as a puppy he left him alone and never bothered him it was the foxy that had the issues.
-
Thanks guys. The foxy pulled through $1200 vet bill and I'm rehoming the foxy. He was my fathers dog before he passed away so we took him in. Getting a behaviorist in would be a waste of time the little foxy is very old and set in his ways. They have gotten along in the past ok but asking that 2 males get along together that haven't grown up together is a big ask. My akita is not aggressive and must have simply had enough of getting crap from the little dog. He has been socialized a lot and attends obedience training and is very gentle with the family. I actually feel a little let down because he doesn't bark and anybody that comes into the yard gets licked to death and he rolls over on to his belly for pats.
-
My akita is a gentle giant that loves kids and the rest of the family. The foxy is a very dominant male and he started it. Normally my Akita walks away but i suppose he fought back this time. It's been years since I've broken up a dog fight. I've never had to lift a dog for so long to stop aggression. I lifted him and twisted his collar then pinned him on his side till he calmed down.
-
Yea mate I heard the poor fella screaming I had to lift my akita off the ground and choke him to get him to let go. It's very upsetting.
-
It's been a bad evening tonight my Akita has just attacked my fox terrier and my fox terrier might die. I am very sad and my partner now wants me to get rid of my Akita so I might be loosing both dogs. I'm going to have a hard time talking her around she doesn't understand that dogs simply fight sometimes and it doesn't mean he is aggressive.

Baltimore Police Dog Training Video
siks3 replied to huski's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
from what i saw in the video the dog was over stimulated and mouthed the handler. The lifting of the dog with a choker collar will remove drive in most cases. But this dog appeared to be a very hard GSD and the level of correction would need to be high. Even after being lifted and pined the dog still didn't appear to be worried so I would put this dog in the hard category. When the dog was lifted by the collar it still turned on the handler so the next level of correction wold have to be higher so the dog would learn that the behavior is unacceptable. But this sort of problem should have been avoided in the first place. I have raised a few hard GSD and I put them on prong collars from a very young age and the word "no" has to be taught as soon as possible. The correction needs to be hard enough to startle the dog and cause it mild pain but as soon as it stops the behavior praise follows and lots of it. It seems that dog had incorrect training to begin with. -
Any way I have been feeding super coat puppy formula top my akita and on the front of the bag it states that it contains omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. So I flipped the bag over and omega 6 is not on the ingredient list but when you look at there junior formula it is listed in the ingredients and is on the front of the bag. I think something is wrong here has any body else noticed this also?

You have made an excellent point the working line GSDs I use to breed as pups were little terrors with teeth. Without a firm owner and a lot of exercise and mental activity they would run wild in a family environment. I was very picky on who I use to so sell my pups to. I would rather sell to a homeless guy that traveled every ware on foot then sell to a family that wouldn't be able to give the dog activities to keep it happy. I have sold dogs in the past to people on big farms with the best intentions only for them to turn into stock killers.

I use baby wipes all the time on my dog. They are convenient and I use them on the kids anyway. -
Please Help With Gsd Aggression.
siks3 replied to RockDog's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Just wondering, why would you use this only on a predictable dog? If you know the target that makes the dog react and you know what your dog looks like when calm as opposed to a very subtle change when loading up, couldn't you do this with an unpredictable dog? Unpredictable being a dog that sometimes does and sometimes doesn't as opposed to one that has learned not to give a warning. Having said this I have never seen/handled a dog that hasn't at least had soft eyes go hard before reacting, even though it was done in what seemed like a nanosecond. cheers M-J I was thinking unpredictable as a dog that shows intermittant reaction to a similar stimulus. A dog that is fine most of the time then flies off the handle out of the blue. Predictable I was thinking predictably reactive, flies off at every dog every time it see's one. Hope this makes more sense Thanks yes it does. So the dog's reaction is intermittant, do you feel that the critical distance training can still be used if the signs the dog is going to react are consistant, although short/subtle, even if the stimulus isn't always blatantly obvious/consistant? I do feel if the dog showed these signs the distance would have been breached, which would be counterproductive to the training. cheers M-J Yes, you are correct M-J I agree. The intermittant reactor is quite a challenging behaviour where watching for change in body language is critical. They usually react when your confident they won't though, and miss it half the time Unpredictable dogs are hard they go straight to full aggression one little thing I have noticed over the years and you will spot it. A dog 99.9% of the time when it starts to even get slightly agitated will lick it's upper lip only once straight up and down before it's about to bite. -
If they learn that any mouthing causes unpleasantness they stop. I dont have to growl at the dog or time out, I deal with it then and there. I have used the thumb under the tongue for years and have never terrorised a pup. In fact it stops them in their tracks and makes them think about what they have done. You dont go running after the pup, drop tackle it and try and jam your hand in its mouth. while interacting if the dog puts its mouth on me, I stop put the thumb under the tongue and totally ignore the dog while I apply some pressure. Yes they carry on like pork chops sometimes but they think wow OK that was not worth the effort. When they play nicely they get rewarded for being nice and controlled. How are they not learning bite inhibition? I own 3 working breeds, 2 working trained dogs, all taught this way and no one dares lay a tooth on me no matter what is happening. They learned from a young age and it stuck forever. Fit a buckle collar and put your finger underneath it and give it a good quick flick. It stops them and they soon learn the meaning of the word no
