  1. Strong possibility she might never start, or if she did, would not be able to sustain labour
  2. Obedience review has been a complete waste of time and money IMHO, every review dumbs it down
  3. I would be looking at stress as the trigger, you say she had been with a minder............I have a dog who I can't board as he gets the runs, also prone to it if any upheaval in his life, just a worry wart...............you may see a connection if you look back at whatever was going on when she had other attacks
  4. Maybe take a leaf out of horse races and video the run, call for the camera if there is a dispute :)
  5. Hope you have excellent pet insurance, especially in the cruciate dept!!
  6. If you are aiming for position I think you might have explained a part of the problem, secret to good positions in heeling is to give command as you stop and bring the dog into position .........but you need to teach what sit is before, but maybe just not next to you to avoid the dog thinking it is right when you aren't happy.....but I think you are fighting anatomy here, greys I have known have sit issues!!
  7. Unfortunately it is the standard system of "management" for some show people and breeders, that's how their dogs "exist" - my two youngest are crated at night, they put themselves to bed when they think it is time, they all love their crates in the car and love holidays in the dog trailer when we go away
  8. Think it is established now that at least some of those baby suffocations were not the family cat but a family member, sadly it happens..............many years ago a dog was alleged to have killed a baby in Melbourne, it was kept quiet but was actually determined the mother had done it, poor soul...............and having had my share of inconsolable babies (who all survived and so did I), I realised how easy it would be for a very stressed or disturbed parent to do something rash!!! I am not talking about low-life baby bashers here
  9. IMHO experience standard poodles are working dogs with a lot of drive, she needs work instead of creating her own
  10. I would have thought the breeder would be your first source for such advice
  11. And I have known two dogs with lifetime disabilities caused by debarking
  12. good reason for standards not to be held up as unchangeable and infallible. They are not always written with all the best knowledge available, and often by people with vested interests. In most cases I think much of what created a breed standard is politics. Rarely were they created by geneticists or even people with a knowledge in animal movement or health. Before Kc's function defined a breed and I think thats what we should go back to. I love to see conformation become the side show with sport the main event. Lurcher and long dog shows as well as working terrier shows in the UK are working events with the beauty contest the side show for the day and a bit fun the serios part is testing the skill and function of the dogs. What created most standards were people who were passionate about their particular breed. People that spent a lot of time working out the ideal breed type for their particular breed. No they probably weren't geneticists, but I bet they knew a hell of lot about how their dogs worked and what traits they wanted in their particular breed. Remember that most breed standards are over 100 years old and were developed in a very different world from what exists today. The dogs that the standards were/are based on had to work as well as show. Shows were meant to show off excellent breeding stock. That breeding stock needed to be able to produce dogs that were able to do what they were bred for. Sighthounds were used to hunt, terriers were used for ratting etc, gun dogs used for retrieving, pointing game, and working dogs actually worked. No they weren't geneticists but I bet they knew a hell of a lot about correct movement and health as for these people their reputations, their livilihoods, their passion all depended on knowing what was a good dog. If you want to through away the standard go for it, but don't come back crying to those of us who have stuck with it that your dogs don't look like X and can't do Y anymore. Because ultimately what you will end up with is just another cross bred with a fancy name. Well put.................a lot of twaddle in this thread, wish people would do their history, early dog people didn't need genetics to know what to breed, performance decided it..................and culling which is a dirty word nowadays
  13. Do you want a group offering indoor lessons or are you wanting avenue to run training?
  14. What a shame Mr Rolly eyes no longer exists. Ever heard of colour dilution alopecia ? I'll highlight the important bit for you . Now you tell me why colour doesn't matter I would add that medical science has yet to find the genes responsible for behaviour traits such as prey/play drive (noting that low play/prey drive as a behaviour trait is required for a LGD and its nature is fairly unique to this type of breed - crossing with breeds with higher prey/play drive can create a large powerful independent dog who does not respond to commands easily and has an increased desire to chase and grab. And when the breed does not carry a colour in its gene pool - and yet other breeds such as the herding dogs also on the farm do - you can pretty well say that a pup carrying that undesirable colour has a high chance of carrying other undesirable traits, such as behaviour, in addition to colour. When these traits can put a persons livelihood in jeopardy, there is a good reason to be sure they are excluded). Excellent response, the founding fathers of my breed who drew up the first standard (and they were all working dog men) were specific in their colours because they knew that anything else hinted at impurity..............a standard is a standard, why not stick to it instead of suggesting changing it to suit whatever people have in their yard
  15. Clean Run for me too, esp when they have free postage sales.......prefer their more open mesh, still does the job but lets air through...............I got heap of bungees from UK on Ebay, pretty cheap
  16. Google Clipper World and search for kennel deck sheet
  17. When travelling in wet conditions close your roof spinners (should be able to from inside trailer) so water is not sucked up through doors by updraught In really cold weather we have put a silver tarp over trailer at night, warm as toast in the morning
  18. A friend has told me of her concerns re the 2 YO bitch her son and and partner have in Perth, dog is reactive/protective, sounds like an Amstaff cross and cannot be walked or let free...........friend is concerned about future grandchildren............son has more control but he is away at mines most of the time and partner has no control............I think it is mainly management, plus a lot of rewarding self-employment dog has had in the past...........obedience club did not work...........that would have been too much stimulation for this dog..........I think frequent absence of the son may be contributing if the dog feels it has no leader Can someone suggest a suitable trainer for one on one so dog can be managed better and have some sort of life? I am reluctant to suggest "trainers" these days, anybody can call themselves that but I know from past topics there are good competent people over there
  19. It is dogs per property, not who owns them
  20. What score for what? Do you know what diseases affect the breed? Is there a test for each disease (sometimes there isn't) There is no test for temperament, apart from observation of the puppies, preferably both parents and some research in to the extended family.............was not impressed by the BB that literally came out roaring from vet's consult room into waiting room and headed for my dog, but in that case I reckon it was the owners and not the dog who needed testing!!!
  21. I know a human allergic to msm, became quite ill
  22. Notice they aren't using standard ANKC pass cards over your way? Hate the horrible A4 things we now have!! Waste of trees in the long run
  23. I'm with Steve on this, what is the point?
