  1. i would love an answer to this question also, i put a dark blanket over mollies crate, did not work, i take her out for her last pee at 10pm she would wake at 6.30 so i thought i would take her out at 10.30, idea being take out 1/2 hour later she would wake 1/2 hour later, BUT NOOOOOOO, she woke at 5.30 instead!!!!!!!!!!! little bugger, she now has last pee between 10 - 10.30 and wakes about 6.00 for a pee, and i just pop her on my bed and she goes back to sleep, with daylights saving kicking in soon hopefully she might learn to sleep in, fingers crossed
  2. thanks so much for your replies, will see if i can go and check it out - observe, first ta again
  3. Thank you for your advice. I added some to his nutro and for the last couple of days, his poos have been soft and rather sloppy to clean up, thank heavens for the rains, that has washed it into the lawn for me. So I guess, it's back to nutro for now. Hopefully his vomitting will become a thing of the past, and he can stay on it. Once he is out of the puppy stage, I think I might look into changing him onto a chix free kibble and see how that goes. glad i could be of help, hope it all goes well, i found it hard trying to find a good food for mollie, you think your doing the right thing buying the "best" food and they don't tolerate it, the poor puppy is unwell on the food and meanwhile you have to switch to something else and the change will upset their tummys, i am glad that i found pro plan, she is so much better on it, it makes it hard when they can't tell you that the food is hurting them or making them feel yuck, my elder dog has both of mollies rejected foods - hills, optimum mixed with his lucky dog, he has a smorgas board and is loving the variety, good luck
  4. i bought my cavalier x poodle (vet told me she can not see any poodle in her at all) from a pet shop (i have since been educated in regards to why this was the wrong thing to do) and i was not given much information in regards to grooming, BUT, when i got home and got her to sleep that night i got on the internet and looked up as much information that i could, brought the required combs and comb her every second, day, i have booked her into a groomer that i use for my cat, and she has her first appointment in 4 weeks, i have bought books on how to care for cavaliers, bathing, grooming, training, ect i understand that some people fail to treat their pets with respect but not all do, people need to realise that it is their responsibility to care for the puppy and to find as much information as possible, i have found many sites very helpful, including this one, found many books helpful, as well as talking to people who own such breeds No i did not get any information but it did not stop me from finding it out myself mollie is so spoilt and is well groomed and well loved
  5. i have my two cats on optimum for cats and they do fine on it, they both have sensitive tummys and this is great for them, reduced smell and stool amount, made their coats soft & smooth Koda my eldest dog started out, when we bought him home, on optimum and did great on it we only changed him to lucky dog as it was cheaper, but it has not affected him, he does well on either. mollie my youngest puppy was on optimum, cause it was what all the others ate and i felt comfortable with the brand and knew it was good food, when small but it did not suit her, she had really smelly & soft poops, corse hair, she was changed by the vet to hills science and that gave her the runs really bad, she is now on Pro Plan, and is thriving, firm poops, not smelly, coat really soft and smooth, will stay with pro plan for her, as you said every dog is different, and we have had all our pets on optimum from the start and never had any problems with it, but mollie does not tolerate it, all u can do is try it and see how it goes, i read somewhere here that "the best food for your dog is one it will tolerate", that is your guide as to which is the best for your dog good luck
  6. my puppy mollie and i are starting obedience classes this week, i don't know what to expect, they have a puppy class that she will go into and she will be with about 2-3 other puppies, they said mollie will be taught to - sit, stay, come and not to be such a mad puppy at meal times, amongst other things i have started training her at home and she has learnt - come, sit, off (for furniture), up (to get on furniture) these all took a few days to pick up, BUT she picked up quick smart one word - TUCKER, she can be in deep sleep and i say TUCKER and she is wide awake, i have never been to obedience classes b4 and don't know how to tell if the one that i am using is a good one how will i know that this is a good class for my mollie to learn and thrive in your advice would be appreciated
  7. my 12 week old cavalier x poodle is currently on optimum puppy, this results in soft, rank stools 3-4 times a day, i had her on this on this from the start and had this problem and my vet changed her to Hills Science dry food, this made her worse, watery, rank and 8-9 times a day, i only kept her on this for about 4 feeds, even though i was only giving her a small amount to change over, i put her on a bland diet and reintroduced the hills - as per vets instruction, he told me to give her the bland diet for 24 hours and then mix it with 1/3 cup hills biscuits, i was hesitant to give so much hills so fast, so i only gave her 10 biscuits mixed with the bland diet, and it pretty much went straight through her, so i stopped the hills and went back to the optimum, this was fine and she was firmer, Until this week, she seems to be getting softer and ranker, i have been reading on the internet that a raw diet is better for dogs, but i don't know how to go about it, some say don't give raw diets to puppies, other say you can, some still give biscuits and some don't, does anyone here do raw for their dogs??? if so how do you do it and what do you use and how much do you still use biscuits?? if so which is the best products to use will this diet fill her up, she is currently on 1 cup of optimum and is always starving instead of raw meat can i give her cooked meat and mixed frozen vegies or does it have to be raw any help anyone can offer would be great thanks
  8. thank you every one for your replies, they have been very helpful.
  9. I can understand you wanting to protect her- but she needs to experience all sorts of things- including weather changes , so she is comfortable and used to the big wide world Where we live, Winter often sees minus temps here, too ..and we have days of over 40 ..so I do know what extreme weather is ..and I also think that, providing a little dog is well coated, and active outdoors, the cold is not a problem. With heat- walks etc are done in the very early morning ..toilet breaks only need to be a few minutes...and a small pool and patch of shade can be a fun place for dogs and people in the hot Summer there are proper doggie loos for indoors if you really must have a dog toileting inside ... several folks on here living in apartments etc have mentioned them thank you so much,
  10. yeah - there is access to outside but our winters here are bitterly cold -7 - 4, (i can wear a jacket but her jackets don't cover her feet & bottom and she freezes) and our summers extremly hot 39-40 degrees, so i feel it better to train her inside, she will be able to get out doors to go for walks and such on the rare days that are ok, but i feel that in times of extreem weather that she would not be able to go outside and figure it better to train her to have somewhere to go indoors, even though she is only going out for a quick wee or poop she does not like it, the other morning we had a big frost and she touched the grass and took off running like she had had a big fright and refused to go back onto the lawn, it was then that i thought it best to train her inside i am home all day and clean up wont be a problem, i just don't want to encourage her to use the pads if it will encourage her to go all over the house, i have set up a room in the house and am training her to go there as that is the only area that will have the pee pads.
  11. just wondering if anyone has had experience in successfully using Puppy Pee Pads to train their puppies for being inside fulltime......
  12. i have been teaching my 10 week old puppy to sit and walk on the leash, i give her a treat for doing it right, but not always, as i don't want her to rely on getting a treat each time, i alternate the treat with loads of praise, when i only give her loads of praise and no treat she barks at me and will go out to her food container where i get the treats from and scratches at it, as if to say " you ran out of treats they are in here" she is a cheeky puppy, but is learning really fast good luck with it
  13. mollie is doing much better, she is on optimum puppy chicken flavour, and she is firmer this time round, the bland diet has worked for her, i think maybe that is was the hills science that was the problem as she was sloppy on this and really soft on the optimum- hence the reason i switched, all our pets use optimum and usually only take a few days to switch over and all is good, but mollie was not, vet said hills was better so i listened to them and in fact made her worse than b4. but this time round on the optimum she is doing well - so far, thank you every one for your advice
  14. Has she been wormed since you had her? I'd not rate petshops as high on the list of sources of advice on puppy nutrition. Basically, once you've parted with your cash, unless they promote what they sell, they really don't give a damn. yes she had been wormed, when i bought her i took her straight down to my local vet, he done a check of her for me and informed me that he was the one who microchipped, wormed, vaccinated and done health checks on all the pups from this litter, when i took her back for her booster vaccination she was wormed again, vet changed her to hills science - apparently it is a better food for them, the sloppy poos started pretty much straight away from her lunch time feed, i put it down to vaccinations from that morning, i am thinking that it is the hills science that is causing her problems, i need to find a food that is not going to upset her tummy, she was fine till after lunch today when i reintroduced some hills biscuits, not even 1/8 cup mixed in with bland diet, but tonite she was runny again, how long can they be on a bland diet, what is the best dry food for puppies??
  15. she has done two poos today and is much better, thank you for your concern, she had a few biscuits with her rice/chicken with lunch. will give her a few more biscuits tonite and gradually increase the biscuits and decrease the rice/chicken over the next few days as i don't just want to stop one to start the other thank again Glad to hear it. thanks
  16. she has done two poos today and is much better, thank you for your concern, she had a few biscuits with her rice/chicken with lunch. will give her a few more biscuits tonite and gradually increase the biscuits and decrease the rice/chicken over the next few days as i don't just want to stop one to start the other thank again
  17. really curious on how the vet would know what the pups Mum looked like when you said in another thread you got her from a pet shop cause he looks after the parents and done the health checks on the pups, he knows them well
  18. A week to adjust to a home after a pet shop and a puppy farm :D isn't a lot of time for one so young. Yep, the optimum may not agree with her and obviously you should feed her what suits her and you, just saying don't write it off, a runny butt in a baby that's been through so much really isn't all that surprising. thank you, she has done 2 poos today, heaps less than the past few days, hopefully once she is back on dry biscuits she will be ok, vet said to start adding biscuits to the rice/chicken food tomorrow - 1/2 cup rice, 1/2 cup chicken, 1/4 cup biscuits, then on saturday straight biscuts, but i am inclined to keep the rice/chicken up for a few more days to get her back on track even more and get some food in her tummy. thanks again for your advice
  19. Oh dear. Poor little mite has gone from her "breeder" - one sort of food - to a pet shop (very stressful) and another sort of food - to your place and another sort of food no wonder she has digestion issues. :D You won't find a huge number of people here who would agree that Hills is the best anything, so do your own research and if you've always been happy with optimum in the past then IMO you should stick with that until proven otherwise. I love that your vet knows it was due to the change of food and not corona virus, parvo or salmonella or anything else this poor babe could have picked up on her trip through a pet shop. ;) IMO boiled chicken (no need for any rice) for three or four days with absolutely nothing else - no treats, no extras, no biscuits, NOTHING else, would probably be best. Then slowly reintroduce whatever food you decide on - and by slowly I mean no more than five or six biscuits for the first meal, then observe if she tolerates this before increasing the amount, it could take a week or more. i am happy with optimum, but mollie was on it for 1 week and was not adapting to it 2-3 runny poos a day,i did not want to harm her by keeping her on it and thought she maybe intolerant to it, my other pets adapted to it within 3 days. will keep up the bland diet till she is better, then slowly introduce dry food.
  20. but she's a cross breed, how do you know she inherited her stomach from the cav parent :D if indeed one parent was actually a purebred cav, never can tell with pet shop puppies. Hope she comes good, just give her plain boiled chicken for a few days and while you are waiting for her tum to settle down, have a read of the nutrition forum and do some goggling so you can make informed choices about your pup. Personally I would prefer optimum over any hills science food any day. cause when she was at the vet on monday he said he could not see any poodle in her at all, he was the vet who done their health checks and all their vet care, he says she is the spit of her mom and he has cavs himself so he would know what they look like and their needs. we have raised another dog and two cats on optimum and they have only taken 3-4 days to adapt to the new food, but mollie was not adapting to it even after 1 week so i thought it best to change her, she had another stool this arvo it was loads better than the past few days, she has only done 2 today much better than the 7-8 of the past few days
  21. she has only done 1 stool so far today, in the previous days it was about 7 at this time of day, so maybe it is getting better, i have been told that cavaliers have sensitive stomachs and take a bit longer to adjust to new foods, but i don't want to leave her to "get used to it" if it means runny poos every day
  22. vet just said that it was a result of the change of food, she was only doing 2 - 3 poos a day the first week of living with me but they were sloppy, all our pets have started out on optimum puppy or kitten food, but vet said the best one was hill science puppy so he switched her to that, was told it would take a few days to get her used to it, once we switched she was doing 7-8 sloppy poos a day, this was from monday arvo to wednesday lunch, thought it may be due to vaccinations, but when it continued into wednesay that was when i rang vet and asked him how to implement the bland diet, pet shop were i bought her told me to feed her what ever i wanted to feed her, as they had recently changed her diet so it would not harm her to change.
  23. rang vet yesterday and was told to not feed her last night, start bland diet - rice & chicken today, just not sure how long it takes for her gut to get back to normal
  24. she is a 10 week old puppy, has been on optimum puppy food and was not tolerating it, so when she got her vaccinations done the vet switched her to Hills Science, but still had diahrea, vet said yesterday to not give her food for 12 hours and then this morning give her - Thursday - 1/2 cup boiled rice & 1/2 cup boiled chicken x 3 times today Friday - 1/2 cup boiled rice & 1/2 cup boiled chicken & 1/4 cup hills biscuits x 3 times this day saturday - give 1/3 cup hills biscuits x 3 times from now on vet thinks it is just the change over from old food to new, even though i did it very slow, she is not ill so to speak, she has loads of energy, eating, drinking, running about, just diaharea, gave her no food last night and she did a very solid stool this morning, i am just very worried about starting her back to early on the biscuits as she is so little and i don't think she can afford to lose any weight
