What Food Can Your Dog Not Resist?
cavNrott replied to Loving my Oldies's topic in General Dog Discussion
These dogs of yours are so lucky DDD for your dedication to their wellbeing. You must be totally over going to the vet so frequently(not to mention cleaning up dog vomit) and tying to persuade Danny to eat. I hate to think what your stress levels would be. Please keep us up to date with Danny, and Tamar too. -

Good that he kept a little of the chicken roll down DDD. I hope today is a better day for you the yesterday. You must have spent half the day cleaning up dog vomit. To Danny's and Tammara's stomachs. Settle down for krisakes. Your Mum needs a break, she must be running on empty. -

You are having a rotten time there DDD. Now Tamar is throwing up as well as Danny. I hope they both settle down now for you. Has Danny kept the chicken roll down so far tonight? -
I'm so very sorry your time with ness has come to a close. What a wonderful life you two have shared. Rest in Peace now Ness

The OP mentioned in her first post that the ear and allergic skin excluded obviously because she is an English Bull Terrier. The OP also said in a later post that the dog had not been treated for these conditions. If it's due to the risk factor then it goes back to what sounds like a breed specific exclusion to me. I have the policies for my two dogs sent to me by snail mail. I want a hard copy of the policies and they also send the current PDS along with them. This is Bow Wow Meow, not Pet Plan. Bow Wow Meow increased the prices by a huge amount too, it's not just Pet Plan. Two years ago the increase was 98%. I can't remember what the latest increase was but it was hefty.

Do we know if the owner of the kennels was out fighting fires elsewhere. Did he actually say that anywhere or is it just Chinese whispers? This man made a very bad error of judgement and my heart breaks for the animals who met a horrible death because of this. Especially for the owners who wanted to collect their animals the previous day. They'll be blaming themselves for not collecting their animals despite the reassurance of the kennel owner. I could not even imagine the state I would be in if my dogs died this way. I've never put any of my dogs in boarding kennels, I'd rather be at home with them than take a holiday without them. I haven't seen the Facebook page where everyone has gone 'sue him' crazy. Emotions are running high and I understand why they're yelling about taking legal action but they need to settle down. Hysteria won't help anyone.

This why it's so important to read the Product Disclosure Statement carefully and ensure you understand what it means. If this was listed as an exclusion for English Bull Terriers then it means Halo would not be covered. They didn't scam you. You didn't read the PDS. There are usually exclusions that apply to some particular breeds and they are listed in the PDS. Eight years ago before one of my Cavaliers was insured she had surgery (twice) for an obstruction caused by her eating loquats that dropped into my yard from my neighbours tree. She could not pass the stones. Any further surgery for an intestinal obstruction was an exclusion on her policy. Fortunately it hasn't happened since. My other Cavalier did not have this exclusion on his policy and he needed bowel flush out for an impaction of crunched up bone that he was unable to pass. The insurance company paid out. I'm with Bow Wow Meow who are always up to date with sending out the annual policy before it falls due. If the policy didn't arrive I would call to ask for it.

Excellent that Danny now has meds to combat any nausea he might have. I think most meds can have some side effects but that doesn't mean everyone or every dog will suffer them. Edited: because we were posting at the same time. Bugger about the meds coming up. I would persist with the anti nausea meds because they may take time to kick in. I hope he keeps the next tablet down. I wonder if the Ranitidine and/or Cisapride might cause vomiting. I hope Rappie sees your post and will advise if it would be worth trying another anti nausea medication. Off to Google side effects of Ranitidine and Cisapride. -
Well as there are no fires around your area that certainly changes any immediate urgency to evacuate the animals in your care, doesn't it? I suggested you should be prepared to evacuate immediately IF there are fires in your area and you're trying to twist it around to mean something totally different. It appears you don't understand what was said. Your original post was mainly about defending the boarding kennel owners for their lack of action in failing to evacuate their animals when there were huge fires in their area...and about criticising people whose opinion differs to yours. Nothing new there.

DDD I don't think anyone could do more for their sick dog than you're doing for Danny. Don't second guess yourself or suspect you're doing anything less than you could possibly be doing. He's a lucky boy to have you taking care of him. Zantac causes me nausea. I felt nauseous when taking it and thought I hadn't taken enough so took another one. If my daughter-in-law hadn't told me Zantac made both her and her sister nauseous I'd have persisted with it. Once I stopped taking it the nausea ceased. My GP who prescribed the Zantac didn't mention anything about possible nausea. Maybe ask your regular vet if Maxalon might help Danny to feel more like eating. When my Rottie was taking a lot of medication for osteosarcoma she was prescribed Maxalon by the oncologist to combat the nausea. It's worth a try DDD. Anything that can get Danny eating again will not only help him but will reduce your stress level. Sometimes vets and human doctors don't consider the side effects of nausea when they prescribe meds. It's good news to hear Danny's eye is starting to heal. -
If this was my dog I'd be taking him to the vet.

DDD, From what I read here your boy is not on any medication to treat nausea and some of the medications he's taking are known to cause nausea. Nausea very quickly stops me from eating anything and taking a prescribed strong medication for pain caused nausea that saw my weight plummet because I couldn't eat no matter what delicacies were on offer. Please ask your vet about meds for nausea for the boy. If that's what is preventing him from eating, anti nausea meds will make a big difference. -
I too came across a pet shop (now closed I'm told) in a major shopping centre that had an empty water bowl in the window with the puppies. It was 11am and the store was closed as evidently the girl in charge had left the store for reasons unknown. There were a couple of people looking at the pups through the window and I drew their attention to the empty water bowl. I went in search of someone in security and asked them if they could get someone with a key to open the store because the pups had no water. They came to the store with me to see for themselves and then went in search of the assistant. By this time there were a number of people standing around the window who were loudly objecting to the pups lack of drinking water. After we'd been there for half an hour or so the shop assistant returned and I asked her to fill the water bowl. She said the reason there was no water was because she was in the process of replacing the bowl with a clean one with fresh water...how she was doing this when she wasn't even present at the store is a mystery! Changing the water bowl seems to be a stock standard answer from pet stores when taken to task because the animals have no water. Sandgrubber where is the prejudice of which you speak? If the pups had no water then good on Debra Tranter for kicking up a fuss. Would you walk away and ignore a window full of pups in pet store who had no drinking water because to bring attention to it might be seen by some people as being prejudicial?

I'm sorry that you have to deal with this but I must say I agree with Haredown Whippets. I would not amputate on a 12 year old dog and especially not a front leg.

Oh don't be so absurd. No one on here is claiming to be an expert and no one has suggested evacuating a large number of animals is simple but clearly it can be done or the other boarding kennel would not have been able to evacuate all their animals on the previous day before it was dangerously urgent. The boarding kennel whose animals perished in the fire received an offer to help take the animals to safety on the previous day when the road was not closed and evacuating the animals was not dangerous. They refused the offer and we all know the result. Are there really uncontrolled bush fires in your area today or are you being melodramatic? If you've been advised that you're in high fire risk today due to fires in your area what are you waiting for? Why are you leaving the evacuation of the animals in your care until the last minute and putting both the animals and the people who are willing to assist you in danger. Having a plan means getting the animals out before the danger is imminent, not taking risks and waiting until the last minute. A plan is only as good as those who are willing to action that plan. Mother Nature is not to blame for those who don't take timely action just because evacuating a number of animals isn't simple. efs

I saw this when I was using my ipad. The image was for the Kennels. I merely posted the link. I did not imply nor suggest donating as I had not even read the notes. If there were no replies here, I feel more that the link should be deleted. I happen to agree with the comments. VM I didn't think for one moment that you were suggesting donating to this unknown person. I know you only posted the link. I took it as a warning to watch out for unscrupulous people trying to cash in.

What does rinsing off have to do with how often they're groomed? They should be rinsed thoroughly every time they're groomed whether it be once a fortnight or once every 10 weeks.
-
Just be careful, isn't set up by the company, it's been set up by someone named Olivia Kmet and judging by the email address for the paypal account, it's hers. Her intentions are probably completely honourable but be sure of who you are donating to. I would not give money to any person who claims to be taking donations. Who on earth is Olivia Kmet and where does she fit in to the scheme of things? There was someone else on Facebook who said they were taking donations but I can't remember the name. The boarding kennel owners insurance will cover the business, both property and loss of income and also their house. I would donate only to the Red Cross and/or the Salvation Army. They'll be at the coal face helping people.

Dew Claw Twisted - Surgery Or Not?
cavNrott replied to soothie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Umm, Rappie, your talking vetspeak :) What is a splash block? I have an idea what a ring block is but it's likely I have the wrong idea. -
The deer antlers I bought turned out to be about 14cm in length round, and as hard as the hardest bone. The dogs sniffed them and walked away. I eventually threw them out. What a waste of $$ they were.
-
Vicks would sting like blazes if the ears are raw from fly bites.
-
Most pet stores, particularly the larger ones, stock products to keep flies away from the dogs ears.
-
I don't think it's diet related with my dogs. When I bath them they're not scurfy afterwards. Last time they went to the groomer I asked her to ensure they were rinsed thoroughly. They're not scurfy this time.
