  1. Oh I must have missed it when the OP posted the puppy's due date. I doubt I would spay and abort at this very late stage. Kelpiecuddles I share your feelings about the first vet. I don't understand why there was even a discussion about an injection. I would have spayed her without further discussion.
  2. May I ask why you didn't have her spayed right after you saw the dogs had tied? Were you keeping your male out in the front yard while the girl was in season? You didn't mention how far along she is now but if this was my female puppy I would be spaying her immediately.
  3. Oh Dear Some men have such a tenuous sense of their own masculinity?
  4. I have never chosen my own pup, I leave that decision to the breeder. From the time of our first contact until the pup is ready to leave the litter the breeder and I get to know eachother quite well so she/he is the best person to make the choice as she/he knows their pups and their temperaments. When I go to meet the litter I'm usually told which pup is mine. I'd be concerned if a breeder asked me to choose the pup I wanted from the litter. I don't know which pup would suit my lifestyle.
  5. I don't think the vets have sorted out the pronunciated yet either. The first vet I spoke about in my previous post who's not interested in titre testing testing pronounces it tee-ter. His partner pronounces it tie-ter.
  6. Evidently it's optional. My vet pronounces it tie-ter.
  7. Book your appointment today. The sooner the dog is seen the better.
  8. Well yes, I guess it's free to set up an account anywhere. The vets I spoke to obviously can't be bothered because they don't see a call for it. See to me that's bad practice. It's not like they're being charged an annual fee for the account so even if they only have one client benefitting they're not losing profit. I'm sure if they could be bothered with titre testing, they may find an increase in clientele, especially if they become the only vet to titre test in your area. I agree Riverstar but I'm done with trying to explain this to the major partner of the vet practice. Our conversation concluded with him telling I'm uneducated because I refuse to vaccinate annually. He suggested those who don't vaccinate are riding on the coat tails of those who do vaccinate annually. If not for them Parvo and Distemper would be rife, according to him. He said it would cost $350 to titre test each dog. This conversation took place early last year so hopefully by now he he is at least recommending 3 yearly vaccinations. It took a measure of restraint to refrain from asking him just which one of us is uneducated. Not to be disuaded by him I recently spoke to the other partner of the practice who made enquiries and followed up by calling me to say she would titre my dogs for $180 each and if I wanted it done to make the appointment with her. She at least made some effort but said opening an account with Vetpath was too complicated. She spoke to a pathology in Melbourne. It appears her partner is still unwilling. I'm planning on taking one of my dogs for a general health check, probably next week. I'll make the appointment with her and tell her there are many people looking for a vet in the SE 'burbs of Melb who want titre testing (we are inner SE 'burbs'). I think she would be happy to go ahead with titre testing and probably to open an account with Vetpath. It's her partner who remains 'uneducated' and she doesn't want to push the issue.

  10. When I asked the vet if they would draw blood and send it to Vetpath they told me they don't have an account with Vetpath and to open one would be more complicated that it's worth. They said I'm their only client who is asking about titre testing and that others are happy to vaccinate their dogs. The vet also said there would be a fee for drawing the blood plus the consult fee.
  11. Dr. Harry in the early days was a well respected and fondly regarded personality. Sadly he is now an embarrassing out of date celebrity vet who's a little beyond it and has lost the plot. IMO he sold out to commercialism many years ago. I agree with Leah82 that he is probably being paid for his opinions and is in need of the money. The sad part is that those who are not dog knowledgeable may believe his ridiculous, inaccurate statements.
  12. I would be taking the dog to an internal medicine specialist. I wouldn't mess around any further with the local vet who appears to be making a diagnosis way out of left field without any testing to back up his food intolerance diagnosis. Cut to the chase and seek specialist attention. You can't go wrong that way. Ask your vet for a referral to a specialist at the Melbourne Veterinary Specialist Centre. The Glen Waverley centre is on the cnr. of Highbury and Blackburn Roads so it's fairly local to you and they are excellent. You need to find out exactly what's going on with your dog, the sooner the better. At the specialist centre they'll discover what's causing the problem and will give you a plan of action immediately. I've had many elderly dogs and none of them have developed a food intolerance. My current dogs are now 10yo and 9yo. The 9yo suffers pancreatitis attacks if she eats fatty food and this was diagnosed when she was 4yo. Her problem is easy for me to manage.
  13. Yes I'm tempted to seek another vet's advice but am not sure how our pet insurance will be able to let us claim from both sides. Might give pet plan a call on Monday before doing it. It's just tablets. Metrogyl quarter tablet twice daily & anti robe twice daily. You need to ask your vet for a referral to a specialist, don't wait for her to make the decision. You will have no problem claiming from your pet insurance for both the GP vet and a specialist. I've done it more than once.
  14. Matkai do I understand that the vet has to write the prescription on one of petceutics forms (the pdf one) or does the vets regular prescription form suffice? Thanks for informing us of this company.
  15. Capstar is not expensive and is availabile in most supermarkets. Really, it's cheap enough not to warrant waiting for postage via Ebay or Amazon. It has been a commonly used product here for years.
  16. Have you looked at Ebay? edited because I keep leaving a letter out of words
  17. Oh Bless him. In his 22nd year. May you Rest In Peace old fella. You ran a good race.
  18. I use crates for housetraining. I put pup in the crate for 10-15 minutes if he/she didn't oblige when we took a trip outside. After 10-15 minutes we would go outside and try again. My dogs also eat in their crates. I always feed pups in their crate so they learn that when they go in there good things happen. My dogs are seniors now and still run into their crates when they see me preparing their dinner. They also occasionally go into their crates for a short nap or to get some peace when my grandchildren are visiting. The crate doors are never closed. I've never left a dog in a crate for more than 4 hours. Even then this would only take place when they were pups and I wanted to ensure their safety.
  19. Flea collars are useless and many dogs are allergic to them. I suggest if you see any fleas on your dog then give her a Capstar tablet which will kill all live fleas on the dog. If you have no Capstar tablets on hand most supermarkets stock them.
  20. I'm so sorry you lost Frodo Thank you for the warning about Vinca. It is a fairly common garden border plant around here. Rest In Peace Frodo
  21. No doubt at all that the neighbour is at fault for not safely containing their dog. Looking at the pic I couldn't quite work out which fence was where. Thanks for the description. Now I get it.
  22. I have to ask. Since you have dogs didn't you inspect the fencing to ensure it was safe for your dogs before you decided to rent this property?
  23. Is this in reference to the elderly lady who was attacked or the other attack of the man with the injured hand? The thread has become a bit muddled now.
  24. Excellent essentialdog. Your posts are a valuable contribution to the thread.
  25. I agree with nekhbet. I am small, 4ft 10" and weigh somewhere between 45-48kg. I had no problems walking 2 well behaved Rottweilers together. Have you done any training with your 3yo female? If not now is the time to start and also start training the 7 month old dog. Find a good trainer to guide you. Word of mouth will usually lead you to a competent trainer and hopefully some members on here will recommend someone in your area.
