  1. Yep it's fine. I've done that with my dogs.
  2. We expect annual increases. It's the nature of insurance. However we expect the increase to be reasonable and pet insurance increases are not reasonable. There's no point in calling to blast them, it's a take or leave it situation. I don't know what you call an 'inferior' insurer. If they honour the policy that's all you can expect. Most pet insurance is underwritten by Hollards and you can be sure if one company increases the price when the policy is due for renewal, so will the others. I doubt the Ombudsman will help. He's there to help if they try to shaft us by not paying out.
  3. The more food they recommend, the more food they sell. I would never feed a dog the recommended amount stated on the back of the pack. It's always far in excess of the dog's daily requirements.
  4. Poodle Wrangler. Not everyone is as free and unattached as you and your friends and sister are. Our friends and relatives probably also have family comitments.
  5. I doubt these dogs were trained to attack. If they were trained dogs both would call off on command.
  6. Who told the 10yo boy that his brother was at the house? No one here knows, if the brother was there. My 7yo grandson wouldn't enter a neighbours property without invitation, especially if there are dogs in the yard.
  7. Mish the lady you have is a lot more expensive than any pet sitter I've heard of, especially those who stay in your home. Then she's choosy about which animals she minds. Is there a reason why she won't mind the Newf? Does he have aggression issues? I wouldn't be prepared to pay anyone $40 a day to stay in my home and have them refuse to mind one of my animals.
  8. When I had GSD's one of them cracked a tooth on a marrow bone. That was the last marrow bone ever brought into the house. I agree with Sheena, turkey necks would be my choice.
  9. Do we have canned pumpkin in Australia? I've never seen it but I don't browse the canned vegetable section in the supermarket so I don't know. I know after I've had surgery I need medication to get the bowels working. I could eat plenty of pumpkin and drink copious amounts of water and it wouldn't help. I've always used Paraffin oil for my dogs, it works a treat but best you check with the vet. I don't know that Psyllium would work Perse, it's just fibre like Metamucil. My non constipated dogs have Psyllium husks added to their raw food every day and it doesn't cause any loose stools.
  10. Excellent ks89. He's been dewormed. I was a bit worried about that because you hadn't mentioned it but you have everything under control. I'm glad you came onto this forum for information. Cookie will benefit from your newfound knowledge and you'll enjoy him so much more knowing you're doing everything right :)
  11. I think for three weeks $500 would be reasonable for looking after multiple dogs and cats.
  12. No, everything reasonably had NOT been done by the owners of the dogs to ensure public safety. The dogs should have been securely gated in the back yard. Has it been established if the brother of the 10yo boy was even likely to have been on dog owners property? The Companion Animal Act would need to reflect that in order for a breach of law to be established and subsequent charges raised. Prosecutors can only raise charges against breaches of relevant laws. Look really, to hell with the Companion Animal Act. I talking about plain old common sense.
  13. Very good advice perse. The kennel looks to have no bedding in there at all. The puppy needs some soft bedding so please take the above advice and put some soft bedding in there for him. I bought some soft blankets from Kmart for about $5 each. I don't want to keep on about the subject but nothing has been mentioned about the status of the worming and it's very important that the puppy has been wormed. He will need to be wormed once a month until he's three months old, then once ever three months. It's good to know there are no ticks where you live. There are none where I live either.
  14. Excellent news. Did she worm the puppy for you? He will definitely need to be wormed now unless you are sure the pet shop wormed him. Also did you discuss heartworm prevention and flea and tick prevention (if you have ticks in your area). Don't agree to a heartworm vaccination. It's better to use oral medication to prevent heartworm. These are all things you need to know about. It sounds like a lot when you're a novice dog owner but it will all make sense to you very soon. Please keep us updated about your pup and if you have any questions ask here on the forum. People on her are happy to answer any question you have.
  15. Ha haha. So that's what all the sniffing and tucked tail is about
  16. It did occur to me. I stopped smoking as soon as I brought my Rottweiler puppy home, more for her health than my own. This was 12 years ago. Now I have lung issues that didn't show any sign of being present when I was smoking. They lung surfaced seven years after I quit.
  17. She looks quite roachy in those pics. What does she look like standing with her head up? I think I would be heading off to the vet with her.
  18. I agree with fencing off the garden area. It's easy to do and you can get all the supplies from Bunnings. It will save the garden from the puppy and will save your frustration at the puppy digging up and destroying your garden. Looking forward to an update this evening regarding your vet visit today. I hope it all went well. Personally I would forget about fighting the pet shop for any reimbursement. It will only cause you stress and anxiety. You're taking good care of him by consulting a different vet. You're on the right track now and I would go forward from here and forget all about the pet shop. I trust if you know anyone who is planning on buying a puppy from a pet shop that you will share your newfound knowledge with them about pet shop puppies and warn them about it. Instead, direct them towards an ethical breeder.
  19. No, everything reasonably had NOT been done by the owners of the dogs to ensure public safety. The dogs should have been securely gated in the back yard. Has it been established if the brother of the 10yo boy was even likely to have been on dog owners property?
  20. Yes, if her dog passed away in the preceding year and her claim was made for the dog's treatment in the preceding year she should have advised them in writing that she wanted the new policy cancelled. She needs confirmation that they received her cancellation notice of the new policy. (after all she's dealing with an insurance company). If the dog died and the claim was made at the beginning of the new annual policy then she has to pay for the whole year of the policy even though the dog is deceased.
  21. I agree with engish.ivy. ka89 is attached to her pup and clearly intends to do whatever is needed to bring this pup back to optimum health. I hope ka89 will update us after the vet has seen the puppy.
  22. The poor sweetie probably feels quite sore. She looks very comfortable in that tent setup you made for her. Are you off to the vet with her today? Will you please update us later?
  23. That's good that he's inside with you. It seems he likes to go outside too. Are you taking him outside often to pee/poo so you can get him house trained. That takes a quite a few weeks. Yep that's pups. If they're inside they want to go out and if they're outside they want to come in. Puppies are a lot of work. He's a very cute little puppy.
  24. Unfortunately we have to keep paying for as long as the policy is current even if the dog passes away. We sign up for a year. I pay monthly and if one of my dogs passed away I would pay out the balance in one lump sum. It would be too awful to have to keep paying every month for a dog who has died. No reimbursement should take months. They're stuffing your colleague around. She hasn't made enough noise. She should tell them if they don't pay up immediately she'll contact the financial Ombudsman. I'm with Bow Wow and I thought they were bad but Pet Plan sounds dreadful. They make Bow Wow look good.
  25. Not sure what you mean by 'put him outside'. I hope you don't mean you will put him outside to sleep and to live his life as an outside dog. He should not be put outside to live, he's a baby puppy and should be inside the house with you Take him outside in the yard for house training and for short play periods under your supervision. Don't put him outside alone, it's not safe for a baby pup.
