  1. I have decided to put this in the forum in the hope that perhaps it may help others with the problem of low progesterone in a pregnancy and the loss of pups born too early. This happened to one of my beautiful girls who lost her first litter at day 51 - such a heartbreak for both my girl and me - but the next time I bred her she was under the care of a reproduction vet and when her progesterone levels fell she was given oral progesterone tablets and the result was 8 beautiful pups born naturally and all fine. I bred her one more time same as before with the help of progesterone and another beautiful litter resulted - third time was an accidental mating just before Christmas she came into season early - but she again with the same help delivered another beautiful litter and then I had her desexed - I did not keep one of her pups as althought I would have loved to did not wish to take the risk even though I had read forums where 2 female daughters from a bitch with this had gone on to produce pups with no progesterone falling problems in the pregnancy. Anyway to get to the point - one of the pups from the first litter was bought by a lady with full disclosure of the mothers condition - and she did decide to breed her - possibly not the decision I would have made but the girl is lovely and a temperament to die for. As the lady owner does not live near any reproduction vets - 5 hours drive away - the pregnant girl is here with me till after her pups are born - she is 59 days tomorrow - but I had advised her owner to have her checked just in case by my reproduction vet to see if what her mother has had by chance been passed on - well her progesterone levels were low and at 6.5 weeks she went on a tablet a day - and as said is now 59 days tomorrow - she seems fine in all ways as her mother did - and my reproduction vet was somewhat but not totally surprised that it has been passed down - he did say its not very common at all but you can never be sure. The pregnant girl's levels dropped to 15 before suppliments were given and my vet said that when they start to get around 20 or lower best to suppliment. I also asked how low it must get before the pregnancy is in danger - he said 6 - but that seems really low. He also said there is no real research to proove just why it does happen but it does seem to happen more often these days. I have advised the owner not to breed again -sell all pups as pets and enjoy her girl as a pet. I do so hope all will go well now for the birth in the next few days. As said just sharing this information with other breeders - it may be helpful to know that this conditon can be passed down - my girl who had it had come from very good lines with no record of it happening before - also 2 of my girls sisters have had normal pregnancies still a bit of a mystery but would love to know a bit more about it. Would be interested to hear if anyone else has come across this.
  2. Hope you get the result you are hoping for - yes they have a way of making you love them - but that is what puppies are like - good luck be interested to hear the outcome.
  3. Some years back my son bought a male from interstate for breeding - the vet told him it did not have testicles down at about 12 weeks - he told the breeder and she was surprised but offered to take the pup back and give him another - and go 50 50 on the transport - which did happen but when the pup was returned to her its testicles were found to be where they should be - makes me think perhaps the stress of travel in a plane etc could have something to do with it - perhaps wait and as already said keep warm and and then re-check. If still not there the breeder should at least refund purchase pice but that does not cover the flight etc for getting him over from NZ - but then if you sold him as a pet desexed or signed contract that he would be you may not be too much out of pocket - these things are always a drama.
  4. Good luck with your girl - I know its one of the things I dread so much - luckily I have never had it in one of my girls either but its always a worry. Was it a large litter and a small dog? My mini poodle's last litter was 9 I was on nerves edge incase she got it and started weaning my pups at 3 weeks to give her some help - luckily we got through but with a lot of breath holding and hand wringing - why! I ask myself sometimes do we do this??????
  5. My mini poodles have their litter with me and also my husband a good bit of the time - usually not in the whelping box but on the lounge beside me - have lots of sheets and towles just for this - I never leave my girl when she is delivering - make sure each pup is breathing and the cord severed or cut properly so no bleeding - let her eat some placentas if she wants them - I put the pups as each new pup is coming into a warm towel and heated basket and let each pup when delivered have a go on a nipple - we record the time each born, sex and weigh - only once had a pup born when I was not home it was a single puppy and he was delivered about 5 minutes before we came home - he was fine - but other than that never leave my girls until all pups safely delivered and she is ok and in the whelping box with the brood. I do remove the sack from the pup quite often some first time mums don't seem to know too much about this. Also give a spoon a calcium syrup between pups.
  6. Anyone know if there are vets around the Hervey Bay Area that do progesterone testing.
  7. Six year the very maximum - I bred one of my girls just a couple of months before she was 6 and lost two pups - never happened before - so never breed them that late again - only pups I ever lost.
  8. Just want some thoughts on this - have not done it before but there are some possibilities for the future - have always used males somewhat smaller than my girls - but thinking of possibilities of a mating between a female miniature poodle with a miniature who is about 3 or 4 klos heavier - female about 8 klo male about 11 klo (quite a big mini) - is it safe to do - as said always used smaller males or at least very near to the females size - never had any trouble but just interested to know what difference in size is considered safe for the mother and of course the birth.
  9. So many seem to do this and you worry so much - I have hand fed my girls to make sure they get what they need - but once the pups arrive they eat like a horse - don't forget their tummy may not be able to hold as much with pups in there see if you can get her to eat more smaller meals - if she has a favorite food then let her have it. One of my girls for a while would eat nothing but chicken necks - she survived really well and the pups were just fine.

  14. Love the photo of all your pups together - its so good when they go locally - not always the case though. We do the Christmas card each year (via email) to sooo many and usually get quite a nice response back - but having said that there are some owners who send a photo often and keep in touch while others drift off and you may occasionally hear back or not at all. We do our own photo of all our dogs together posing with a Christmas tree etc. - we spent over 6 hours doing it - by the time we bathed them all and groomed them up to look as good as possible - but we do enjoy doing it. As for the original enquiry - yes its very upsetting when something like this happens and we all do our best to find the best possible homes but what can we do once the pup is placed with the owner - I always tell my puppy owners to be to do their homework and research as much as possible but so many of my buyers have had a poodle before or have one so that seems to help matters but I also tell them its usually a 16 year commitment and at the very least a challenge till the puppy grows up a bit - send the pup off with lots of printed information etc. I send emails on the happenings with my own dogs and enquire - but as already said by others you can't be in their face if they choose not to bother with you once a pup is with them. You did all you could and try not to take it personally - its a pity that some breeders seem very ready to put down another breeder if the chance is given - this is not a good thing to do unless you have all the facts and are totally sure - but isn't it the way with some people not only in the dog world - they feel they can boost their self by putting someone else down. Lets all just hope this poor little fellow only still a puppy really at a year does get to be with people who will bring out the best in him. He sounds like he will be better off away from his present owner.
  15. I agree. I drive 4 hours there and 4 hours back just to drop a puppy off at the Airport. I wouldn't want a baby going by road with a transport company. I don't charge new owners for this either...... perhaps I should be??? That is so good of you lucky puppy buyers. We were thinking of taking the pup all the way to toowoomba but have commitments that afternoon and were worried about getting back in time. She did offer petrol money but it was a time thing and she had relations coming to stay the weekend we could do it.
  16. Have resolved it my husband - bless him - will drive the puppy to Ipswich on the Saturday So her husband can accompany her I would go myself but had made plans for that day that can't be changed they will then complete their journey with a stop in toowoomba. feel a lot better now.
  17. One of my pups has been ordered by a lady who lives miles out of Moree - we live in brisbane she asked if we would be willing to drive the pup as far as toowoomba over 2 hrs drive with two toll roads as she was worried about driving all the extra miles on her own. She then rang back to say the pup could be picked up by a company Dogmovers and transported to Toowoomba by road if I gave them the pup at a road side location not too far from where I live and it would be in toowoomba in 2 hours - Dogmovers rang me today and said the pup would be kept over night at the Gold Coast and transported the next day. Said an emphatic no to this and asked what had happened to the original quote of a direct drive to toowoomba was told she had made a mistake. Alarm bells are ringing and wonder has anyone ever used this company. After much checking the dogmovers llady said it could be driven direct to toowoomba if we took it to browns plains about 45 minutes drive from us. Have rang the owner to be and left a message to ring me. Feel a bit reluctant to place my puppy with these Dogmovers crowd have flown my pups many times before without problems but has any one used them and how were they. No flights to where this lady lives.
  18. I have a girl who lost her first litter at 51 days - do dreadful - next time off to the reproduction vet - her progesterone was monitored and she needed progesterone to get her to the end of her pregnancy - beautiful healthy litter was the result - bred her again - same thing but needed progesterone a bit earlier this time - I asked my reproduction vet if they were any closer to knowing just why this happens and he said no that there is very little money made available for dog pregnancy research - but he added that it is becoming more common. While in the waiting room was talking to another breeder - she had had a girl need progesterone as well. My girl came from a mother who had no such difficulties and I know of her sister who was fine too - I have put a couple of her pups with other breeders with full disclosure of the mother's condition - I have advised them when they do breed to get blood tests done for progesterone levels just in case - I am interested in the results - I do hope it has not been passed down. My girl delivered as easy as wink and fed and raised her litters no problem at all and returned to normal very quickly. Maybe one day there will be an answer. I have seached the internet for any answers but nothing pinpoints anything. One thing both the repro vet and I both noticed that around 5 or so weeks her tummy seemed to have dropped - once progesterone was started - one tablet a day - she seemed to change shape and her tummy not so low. I am not breeding her again but I must say except for this progesterone problem she was an ideal breeding bitch. White doing my research read about the herpes virus and wonder if it could be a problem - certainly with checking - it is very contageous I believe. Good luck - hope you get a litter from your girl.
  19. Quite few years ago now I picked my pup a real beauty to keep and breed - at around 6 weeks I discovered she had a small hernia - I did heaps of research and remember one person who had bred for years said one of his best breeders ever had a hernia. Of course it depends if its only a little bit of fat trapped which this one was - my vet said she would be ok - well I finally had her desexed after 5 beautiful litters and he tucked the hernia in and she is now retired with no ill effects whatsoever. She was a strong and beautiful dog and it didn't worry her - but again it was only a bit of trapped fat. I will point out however in the litters she bred there was always a puppy with a hernia - the same small one like their mother and I sold these pups with written promise if the vet charged more at desexing for tucking it in I would gladly pay the extra over and above a normal desexing - none ever asked for extra. I think pehaps it is a bit hereditory as my other girls have not had pups with hernias.
  20. Thanks Christina And by the way my girl delivered a beatiful litter just over 2 weeks ago - CCCQ have also been very reasonable about it all - the outcome has been a good one inspite of all my worry right on Christmas. In short pups are beautiful and healthy mum is coping amazingly and I will be placing well reared puppies with people who will love and treasure them. Was surprised to see this posting pop back up after all this time. My girl has done her bit and will be spayed as soon as the pups are reared and she is up to it.
  21. My girl had her litter this morning. - 9 puppies - at day 58 - they all seem lively and fine but some are quite small - the smallest one is only 140 grams they all seem to be able to nurse ok but so many of them for my mini poodle - but she does have big litters. Last time she went to day 60 and they were a bit bigger but day 58 is early really. I have divetalact here and usually weigh the pups about three times a day especially the small ones and give them an eye dropper of formular if I feel necessary but do you think I should see how they go over the next two or three days or start now with a little formular for the smaller ones. I have tried to divide them with the smaller ones alone but at present she doesn't like me doing this but it works if I sit with her and and keep the bigger pups around the front of her. Also with such a big litter how much and how often would you give calcium syrup she had about 20. Mils while delivering over 4 doses she has had two bowls of divetalact since the pups were born and seems pretty good only panted once after she had been out of the box for a toilet break. No matter how many litters you have it's always a worry.
  22. I buy the velcrose collars from Whelping supplies - excellent - but while young I use strips of coloured felt - the stuff you buy from the $2 shops - when they are a bit older I use the velcrose collars and tie a tag of the felt to it - the pups are then - if a fluffy breed which mine are - abe to be identified easier for photos or videos - the felt tags may need replacing a few times as they grow and have fun with each other but makes them much easier to identify . Also the felt is nice and soft while so young and can be stretched as they grow without having to take it off. This has worked well for me for several litters.
  23. Thanks for that totally correct in every way I admit my own mistake entirely what can I say hope it's not only a lesson for me but others too may learn to never take thins for granted when its that time I remember years ago reading you should never begin a sentence with the words "if only" but if only I had doulble checked that gate and if only I had been less concerned with my boys comfort and left his chastity belt on but I didn't at that moment and so gotta suffer the consequences what ever they may be It has thought me a big lesson so please don't judge me a bad breeder just a lady who slipped up. Love my dogs totally.
  24. I am starting to come to terms with what has now happened and discovered the baby gate that had served me so well in the past now can be sprung sometimes - I did have an accidental mating many years ago - yes - when new to breeding and took many steps never to let it happen again and had been successful - these pups if they do eventuate would not be from a 3 in a row breeding my girl came into season normally after her last litter and was happy to let her miss 2 more seasons and let her have one final litter befor having her spayed to be just my pet. I am not a big time breeder our 4 dogs live with us in the house -so back yard kennels and runs are no part of my set up - I even had invented a very effective belly band which served me well but the morning it happened I had taken my boys belly band off to give him a break and they were on either side of the gate somehow my girl must have jumped on it just the right way and the rest is history now. If she had come in at her normal 6 months the time would have been fine for registration of a litter. She was 6 weeks early. I have heaps of hind sight now as is always the case butwhat is done is done. My plan is to just talk to cccq when they are back after new year and run it past them I feel confident my girl is up to having pups she is fit bouncy and a wonderful mother in the meantime I am still keeping them apart no way they will get together again will have her scanned at 4 to 5 weeks in all probability there will be pups but I feel I will just see it through fix the gate and keep the chastity belt in place for the moment. After this I am seriously thinking of quitting breeding for a couple of years at least and see how I feel down the track. Thank you all that have given me support I do do my best to raise healthly good pups and have enjoyed it over the years but my other two girl are now spayed and this girl is my last one without moving to acerage and love my two older girls too much to part with them. Finally merry Christmas all and will let you know what transpires in 2013. Maybe out there there was someone wishing for an apricot mini and maybe their wish will come true.
