  1. Thanks for all the good wishes everyone - the pups are doing great and so is mum. Pups will be a week old this Sunday. I am curious about others who have had a girl on progesterone and the outcome - will put another post on.
  2. Funny you say that but I had been watching a youtube c/section on a dog and my girl came in and put her feet up on the desk to see - maybe when she saw that she thought she would take matters into her own paws - I'd have to be realistic though and say it was the sound of the pups that attracted her but you never know!!
  3. Sorry I missed this post earlier but more than happy to share the knowledge At 4 weeks had ultrasound and progesterone blood test - level was 85 Two weeks later another ultrasound and progesterone blood test - dropped to 39 two days later another blood p/test down to 37 so as it was on the way down she was started on 100mg Progesterone - 10mg per klg in capsual - each morning the vet said it was human grade progesterone - but didn't ask any further details. Day 61 showing signs of coming into labour -= day 62 had a natural delivery no problems at all. I do have a print out of the full procedure but its 3 pages long - happy to send if you would like to read through - send me a message with email and will forward to you.
  4. I have the most wonderful news - my girl Charlotte has just this morning delivered her babies - 8 - a really beautiful litter - 4 girls and 4 boys - so far all seem strong and healthly little puppies - and the best part is that she had them naturally - no need for the cesarean after all. Chalotte is wonderful and is such a good mother to the puppies - its very early days but as they grow will put some photos on and let you know how they are all going. I am over the moon at this outcome as I was fully prepared to take her for the cesarean tomorrow but now its all over and all I have to do is see that all continues to go well. Thank you God or the big poodle in the sky - someoine must love us. Thanks too for all the lovely wishes - it makes you feel not alone when facing a worrying time.
  5. Yes using Phil Thomas - he has been so very good. My girl is never more than a few inches away from me - where I go she goes - but she is eating and seems happy - wish I could make her understand what is going to happen - they are just so trusting.
  6. I have previously put on about my girl who lost her first litter at day 51 due to low progesterone - didn't know at the time what caused it - well this time she is going well as previously put on she has been on progesterone since day 39 and is booked in for a c/section on Monday early afternoon - day 63. The reproduction vet has been wonderful and I have been talking each day all this week with him and so far so good. She will have her last tablet on Sunday morning and then the delivery Monday - unless anything happens over the weekend - but have been told to ring 24 7 if necessary. Hoping that she will accept the pups after the c/section - have been reading up on it and hoping all will go well - have been told to be prepared if necessary to put the babies on and off every 2 hours if she takes a little while to accept them - but the vet told me that in her favour she had the pups for a short time that she lost and also she is a poodle and they have a very strong mothering instinct - so hope all goes well. Say your prayers for my girl and her puppies.
  7. When are these puppies due - sounds like it must have been unplanned - hope for the bitch and her pups it all works out ok.
  8. Seems its not uncommon - one of my girls did this - had to put down a piece of carpet secured so as she did not bury the pups - I put it onto the forum myself here is the link - http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/214506-shredding-the-welping-box/page__p__5127461__hl__%2Bdigging+%2Bbed__fromsearch__1#entry5127461 Were quite a few answers - she did get past it as they got a bit bigger but a bit of a worry.
  9. Not really sure as I let her have natural matings over 4 days - the last one day 4 was not planned - but I am taking the day count from the first day of mating - my other girls came from 58 to 60 days from the first mating. The vet will be seeing her again next week. The 17th is 63 days from the first mating.
  10. Just an update - my girl is now at 54 days and going well - she had a progesterone test yesterday and all was good - will be talking on the phone to the vet every day from Monday - and he was happy with her yesterday. Still having her tablet each morning. I am still not allowing myself to get excited but am remaining very hopeful for this litter - she is happy and eating and its hard not to get a little clucky when she is laying on my lap and I can feel the little ones moving inside. I am prepared that the delivery will be a c section and hoping this all goes well but I feel she is in excellent hands and all to do now is keep her close and watch her - at present 17 October sounds like the day for the delivery but will be taking her back to vet nearer to this time to be sure - my vet is very nice and has told me he will be on call any time till the pups are safely delivered.
  11. Hope all comes good for the guy - thinking of you.
  12. Congratulations and good luck with your breeding programme - yes this forum has been a great help to me many times - but I call the computer the black hole - so easy to just dissapear into it - amazing where two hours can just go!!! Always remember - the sign of a clean house is a broken computer.
  13. Trouble is you are not always 100% sure of what caused the first lost litter - so do you just give up when you have such a lovely girl - anyway I have got to see it through now - sometimes I think mother nature may know best but sometimes a helping hand results in something beautiful both in animals and humans - we have come so far with medical advances its a shame not to take advantage of it.
  14. My girl had another blood test today and the progesterone had dropped to 37 so she started today on the tablets - one each morning - I have another appointment in a week tomorrow to check her levels and see how she is going - trying to think positively - the ultra sound at 4 weeks showed 6 pups so hoping all will go well. But won't put her through it again - the reproduction vet specialist is very good I hear and the day I took my girl in at 4 weeks there was also a border collie who was being treated for the same thing - she was there for her ceasar and apparently all went well. So here's hoping we will get there with healthy puppies and a good result for mum. But I don't think I could ever go through it again - but this thread may help some others in the future. A little concerned for the ceaser - had a girl about 18 years ago had to have a ceaser - she was fine but I have forgotten what's involved taking care of mum and the new pups - but my vet told me today he will be telling me a lot over the next couple of weeks - she is 45 days today from her first mating.
  15. Thanks Hannah - just read the thread you put on - I have an appointment to take her in the morning for another blood test - she is now 44 days into the pregnancy - The reproduction vet also said that the levels can fluctuate and think he wants to be sure before the supliments begin - I meanwhile am watching her like a hawk - he said any change whatsoever bring her in - she seems fine at present eating and happy but I will be so glad when I know all is ok. Did your girl need a ceaser - he said its much more common that they will after having progesterone tablets.
  16. This will probably be the only time I put my girl through this - too much of a worry - don't know if it could be hereditary or not - she came from a very good breeding bitch - had good litters without problems. Thank you for the good wishes.
  17. My girl lost her first litter at 51 days all born alive but much too early - she is now 43 days along today - took her to the reproduction vet specialist Phil Thomas Chermside Brisbane - at 4 weeks for ultra sound and blood test - all was going good - progesterone level 85 - took her back this morning (2 weeks later) for another ultra sound and blood test - ultra sound looked good but the blood test came back at 39 she is to be blood tested again on Thursday - he advises best not give her the progesterone till it drops to 30 or below so guess all we can do is keep testing and follow his advice -he said giving the progesterone tablets too early can result in abnormalities in the pups - also supresses the immune system of the mother - its all a bit of a worry but would be very interested to hear from others who have gone down this road. He said also that it nearly always results in a ceaser birth - did have a girl have a ceaser 18 years or so ago - she went fine after so I guess that is not a real worry. Guess I am just looking for reassurance - or advice of what may happen - hoping all will be well this time - but as said would really be interested in anyone who has also gone down this road before or a link on this that explaines the levels thoughout pregnancy.
  18. So sorry to hear of your loss it is just heart breaking - I know how you feel - I lost my whole litter born too early only 51 days - my girl grieved for 3 weeks - it tore my heart out but slowly she came back to her normal self and when she brought a stick in and chewed it up on the lounge I was so happy as at last she seemed to have returned to her normal naughty self. My girl is 42 days now and I have her under the care of Phil Thomas a reproduction vet at Chermside - such a wonderful man - I have another appointment in the morning with him so hoping all will be well this time. I also had one pup in a litter of 6 born dead - couldn't revive her at all - we really tried but the vet thought she was probably dead before birth - it took a long time for her to be born - its so sad when it happens and you ask yourself why so many times but I guess at the end of the day its just what can happen when we choose to breed our dogs. I hope one day she will be able to have a nice litter not only for you but for her - I know I want my girl to have her pups so much - for the short time she had them she showed how wonderful she would be as a mother. It probably helps a little to know so many are thinking of you and feeling your sorrow.
  19. My girl had a singleton with no problems at all - she is a large mini poodle approx 10 klo - she had been kept away from my boy through her season but they managed to have one mating much to my disaproval towards the end of the season - she had had her first litter and it was the season after she had had her pups - I was not even 100% she was even having pups but she had the little male while I was out briefly - we stayed up all night waiting for more to come and had her vet checked in the morning but no more pups - he turned out to be lovely and now lives in WA. I also helped a friend deliver her singleton pup - she was a toy poodle and the pup was a little larger than normal but not that much - all went fine with no help from the vet. Both girls fed and cared for their singleton pups very well.
  20. One of my girls - hopefully - is to have a litter mid October - my husband and I have been asked to go away for 2 nights at the end of November - the pups would be 6 weeks by then - I know my husband really wants to go and I am happy to if I can make suitable arrangements for my girl by way of a livein housesitter for the 2 nights - only did it once before when pups were nearly 5 weeks but that was for only one night - it was ok - but this time don't like to impose on friends or family - the friend who helped me last time is no longer in the best of health and family have dogs of their own and two babies. 6 week pups to those not in the know are a bit of a handful!! Are there people who do do this? I Hate to dissapoint my husband in this one - have often thought there must be others who need this kind of help too and would think of helping out a fellow breeder when required -I am more than happy to pay for the service but just interested to hear anyone had experice in this area.
  21. Just as an update - took the litter to my vet - he said she should be fine to breed - very small hernia that is only a little trapped fat - but I am going to see how she is after a year before I make a final decision. thanks for all the replies.
  22. Took the pups to the vet today - he said its not a worry at all really - just a little fat trapped - he said the hole is not large enough for any intestines to get out and cause real harm and all should be fine. Remember reading an article years ago about a breeder of Cavs who said his best ever breeder was a girl with a hernia - its been like that for this puppy's mother had picked her out before the hernia showed up. Thanks everyone - as I've said so many tmes before do we ever stop learning!!!
  23. Thanks Oakway its what its all about - the best for our pups - will take that on board.
  24. So much written on the age to do the first immunisation - had in the past gone for 6 weeks usually nearer 7 weeks - last time just over 7 weeks - but some seem to think later is better nearer 8 weeks - have done a heap of reading on it and there are so many different points of view - read about one vaccine that is effective after 36 hours - made here in Australia - does this ring a bell with anyone and what age is best all things considered.
