  1. A guy at work travelled to Walcha via Bucketts/Thunderbolts Way just a couple of weeks ago and told me the roads are very good...we'll be coming home that way. ETA: Friday night we'll head up the New England to Tamworth then on to Walcha Saturday morning. I live in Gloucester and regularly travel that way to get to Armidale. That part of the road is good. The Bucketts way is a bit pot holey at the moment due to the logging trucks, but I still think it would be quicker to go that way than up the new england hwy. Just checked the forecast for Saturday temps 15-20 degrees and thunderstorms. I like the temperature, not sure about the thunderstorms though. Might pay to pack a coat!!! LOL :D
  2. Ditto. We'll be there on Saturday
  3. Thanks, I will give all of these ideas a go. I noticed that ebay has furminators on sale for $15 so I might purchase that as well. His coat looks patchy at the moment with darker spots where the hair is shedding "better" and lighter patches which I assume are "dead" hair ready to come out. It would be nice to try and even things out before this weekend as we are going to a show( our last for the year  . )
  4. Hi, I have a six month old rhodesian ridgeback puppy, that is shedding at the moment. I was wandering if any one had any good tips on efficiently getting rid of the loose hair out of his coat. I have been using a "shape n Shed " (metal double sided comb) and a slicker brush. Just when I think no more hair is coming out with the brushes I will rub my hands over him and more loose hair!!! What does everyone else use? and do you have more success?
  5. He is a great puppy, very affectionate and lovable, and most importantly fantastic with the kids. When I am out he and the older ridgie are outside, they only come inside when I am at home. And usually he follows me all over the house. Since the couch chewing, if I know I can't monitor him I have been putting him outside. I would really like to modify this behaviour with training and positive reinforcement, so that we can get back to him having his freedom inside, without having to resort to the crate if possible. And I am off to buy a bag of dog bones to give him all the chewing he needs outside!!
  6. Your fault, you never ever leave a puppy unsupervised with free run of the house. If at any time you can not watch a puppy you need to put it in a pen or crate. Why so shocked? It's a puppy, they chew stuff. Next thing it will be your Sunglasses, Remote Control, Coffee table. Very simple solution....as per above....NEVER ever leave your puppy unsupervised with free fun of the house....it's like giving a toddler a can of paint and a brush and leaving them in the house when you go to work. That's just a joke eh, you don't believe the puppy can reason like that? Yes it was a joke. I think I needed to see some humour in the situation!! I agree it is the owners fault most of the time. But in my defense he had never shown an interest in the couch, he has never been crated, and until now no problems and ( we must be just lucky until now!!) we have had him since he was 8 weeks of age, and if it was the remotes or my sunnies etc i would understand alot more than him ripping and chewing a hole in the side of the couch. And yes until I get a firmer hold on the situation his freedom has been curtailed somewhat.
  7. If he even looks at the couch sideways I will be considering putting the crate in the family room and him in it. It would be impossible to block him off from that room as it is an open plan kitchen/dining/ family room that leads onto the back yard at the back at the frontyard from the front door. I was just so shocked as he had shown no interest in the couch before than. He picks up the kids toys and runs around with them but never hurts them and gives them back on command, and he has only done minor damage to one pair of shoes. He does destroy beds that have stuffing in them but other than that not much damage until now. I could handle a few pairs of destroyed shoes over the couch!! ;) So far the eucalyptus oil seems to be deterring him. I will be reapplying it tonight.
  8. He usually gets walked each evening for 30 -40 min and this includes probably 15 -20 minutes of free running and playing at the dog park. Yesterday morning we had been at a dog show with him, so he was pretty tired from that, and we played with him for 10-15minutes ( this included 5min of quick basic obedience training) in the backyard before the kids went to bed. i had roused on him for jumping on the couch just before i left the room, so maybe it was a revenge attack!!LOL
  9. Help!!!!!!! My 6 month old rr puppy just chewed a 20 cm hole in our leather couch ;) He regularly destroys his beds (doesn't eat them just shreds them to pieces) so we bought him a canvas cover for a trampoline bed and that seems to have fixed the problem. But tonight i was putting the kids to bed and the puppy was left alone in the family room for less than 3 minutes, and I have come back out to find the puppy happily chewing a 20 cm hole in the leather couch. He has never shown any interest in the couch before (besides jumping on it). He has lots of toys and likes to chew plastic bottles, and there was a fresh plastic bottle only 40 cm away, but he chose the leather couch!!!! I have put eucalyptus oil around the hole he has chewed to try and deter him from making it any bigger. Does anyone have any ideas on how to stop him from chewing things he shouldn't and any phone numbers for a good upholster!!!!!!
  10. hmmm i'm in Gloucester and mine arrived yesterday!
  11. I have only recently found out that sultanas and grapes were toxic to dogs. I was told about it at puppy preschool which i was attending with my ridgie pup. I was surprised as my 2 older ridgies used to regularly "clean up" after my kids when they spilt sultanas all over the house, with no ill effect. Needless to say since being told about the toxicity of sultanas I have now become super vigilant, forever reminding my 2 1/2 yr old and 5 yr old not to feed the dogs or spill their sultanas on the floor and fishing the odd soggy sultana out of my 5 month old ridgies mouth. LOL
  12. Hi, I am a newbie to the showing world. After attending 2 shows ( and having lots of fun) I have decide that it might be of benefit to my ridgie pup and I ( and my OH and 2 dd) to purchase a crate. I was wandering if anyone had any reccomendations from their experiences on what brand etc to buy. Thank you
  13. Hi, I live in Gloucester NSW, 1 1/2 hours north of Newcastle and 50 minutes west of Taree and Forster. Does anyone know of a group or club that does dog show training in this area? I am new to showing as well and would love to go to some lessons to "perfect" the craft!!
  14. :D Sorry have only just read the post. I hope you are all right after the car accident you were in. Not a nice way to end a good weekend.
  15. Thanks everyone for some great ideas!! i am definitely going to try some of them out to see what works for us.
  16. Hi. I have an 18 week old Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy who has in the past 2 week decided to jump on the couch all the time. I have tried to get him using positive reinforcement saying"off" and when he hops off giving him a treat . than telling him to go to his mat, and when he does giving him a treat praising him for being on the mat. but no sooner does my attention go off him than he jumps straight back on the couch and we go through the process again. Very frustrating as this can happen up to 10 times before I give up and just put him outside for a while. It feels like we are having a game and I am rewarding him for it!! Does any one have any suggestions?
  17. Yep, by all means do so please. Occasionally a show secretary may ring you and ask for the information, but if you multiply the number of times people have missing or incorrect information on entries by the number of calls the secretary has to make, it's courtesy to make the call yourself if you remember that you've left it off. Thank you
  18. Hi I am a newbie to the showing world, ( attending my first show this weekend, I am very excited and nervous!! ;) ) and I have just realised that 2 of the entries I sent earlier this week for different shows, I have missed putting on my puppies registered number. Is it ok to ring the phone number on the show ad and ask them to add his registration number?
  19. yes I would be interested to know about any updates too,as I have entered my ridgeback puppy in it.
