JUST AND IDEA * change you treats up * tug toys instead of food *short 3 minute exercises for your heeling some working breeds will work better after having a break of sorts for a week or two from obedience. if you have another dog train it first while your other dog watches she will want to get out of her create or from being tied up make it a game with your heeling go back to basics teach her the position of heel (left leg) but work on getting her closer to your leg and attention just for one step foward and make her reward instant use a tug toy as her reward instead of food for doing that one step, for watching you. she will expect something fun if she gets two steps done etc etc eventually you will have a dog that know when shes in that position watching she gets a game. but she must be in right near you left leg to get game is she doesnt perform re-do the exercise. then expand how many steps you take before she get the reward but always mix match it so she doesnt know when her reward is comming. for your "figure 8 exercise" if you do that when you enter go left so you get the dog inline make sure she knows you have food on you. when you heel around the post with your dog on the outside get her excited and try to get her to speed up her aim is to race you to the middle but being in the heel position. she gets rewarded everytime she races you she gets fed in the middle"her reward" if she heels beside you

the trouble with splitting a bigger sized application is that there is different levels of product/ingredients for the dogs weight example for a 20.1 to 40 kg dog it contains a certain amount 120mg(mL) of selamectin what ever that is for that weight range is you were to split it, it wouldn't have the same effect and could possibly be dangerous for the smaller weighing dog as it is getting more then its aquired mL range

Help! Pulling Puppy And I Have Knee Problems
BMAK replied to lopolla's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
hi there my dogs kelpies know how to heel on a loose lead close to my leg when doing obedience no trouble but i dont want them to be on a command the whole time they are walking it would stuff them up. But when it comes time for walking, my younger dog pulls and he is just to hard to controll i get frustrated and annoyed when he is infront and pulling me constantly!! i walk my two dogs with the gentle leader on mentally changes how he walks makes your walk peaceful i have used a easywalker a front clip chest harness works great have used it on other dogs from cocker spaniels to golden retievers but, my boy has a deep chest and it slips foward above his shoulders so it doesnt sit correctly on my dog but reguardless it still works so he doesnt pull. if i am not using either of these (but i would recomend the gentle leader or a halti) i use there thin leads as a soft choker (not literally) haha and i situate it right up behind the dogs ears it totally changes how my dogs walk and how i control them and it works really well and doesnt cost a cent. i use my check chains when doing obedience because they already know the command of heel and a quick correction is all they need i could continue to keep checking my boy on a walk and he still wouldn't respond to it. depends on the dog but i wouldnt want to be reaping his neck off when there is a easier solution like a head halti at a small price. hope this helps -
you dont need to go out and buy thousands of toy to entertain your pup. put two or three different ones in the yard everyday and mix them up everyday your dog wont take any notice that they are the same toys. what i did with my pup now adult was to feed her breakfast and dinner in a large treat ball, but instead of treats i used it for the breakie and dinner to keep her mentally stimulated and feeding her at the same time. and she wasnt able to guts her kibble because she has to nudge it for the kibble to fall out which took her ages and keeped her entertained with food and she wasn't being over fed. so a double win in keeping your dog busy/mentally/physically active.

I know solid working lines kelpies and tan marked show lines kelpies so colour doesn't really make a difference as to what type it is likely to be. My ideal for my next kelpie is a red and tan show lines bitch I have found them easier to pick looking at a combination of colour and build yeah you can get soild working kelpies but the marked kelpies are prefered. when you say show line ??? arnt they a soild colour to be shown ? how do you get tan ones from a show line, im confused?

does your vet know whats causing the reaction?? try to test and eliminate as much as you can sometimes it can be multiple. i have a friend who owns a border that has to have a special kibble thats fairly expensive through the vets because of her stomach i think she is allergic to certain foods/meats. since you have a giant breed of dogs not to sure on when you swap them over to adult but i swapped my dogs (medium)over to adult at that stage as they were a healthy weight range and didnt need to put on any more puppy fat as they were filling out nicely. i feed mine now raw diet and kibble Pro Plan sensitive skin and stomach and salmon is the number one ingredient and im pretty safe with salmon being omega3 because my younger boy had always had trouble with his stomach. you can always suppliment one meal perday from adult kibble with good fatty foods that will give him the energy and nutritions he needs for a growing pup if you feel he needs to put more weight on?

its cos potatoes are a starch like rice so it's ment to be a good filler supposedly. i want to be able to get my hands on orijen best brand to be out there by the looks. -
yeah agreed totally its not the dogs its the "stupid irrisponsible owners" and people that breed already unsocial dogs its just very unfortunate they they end up in the wrong hands any dog from any certain breed can fight if lead into that path its just unfortunate that these APBT and Staffy's etc that have this bad reputation and misconception because of irrisponsible breeders and owners and the dog gets the blame in every situation i think its totally unfair on the dog

you can normally tell whether your dogs is from a working line or show line by there colour/markings not always ie ; i have a solid black kelpie he is the same as his mum but his father and other litter mates were all blk n tan n red n tans but it will be easier to tell if they have tan markings in them to whether or not they are workings line if they do, high chance they are. alot of workers use the red n tans alot not just because fo there working line but because they can with hold being in the sun for long hours being a lighter colour rather then a completely black dog. they need a lot more mental simulation then physical i personally think, so your agility, flyball mentally challenging games like you obedience and tricks using that built up energy but every dog suits a certain level of exercise in every breed
-
i own two kelpies, my first dog is from fantastic working pedigree line a blk tri girl now 4.5 yrs and a solid black barb kelpie 2.5 yrs with a few white hairs on his chest. i notice that they are very opposite in behaviour and temperment my girl from the working line is independant more dog orientated and not much of a cuddler but loves interation with tug-o-war or fetch with people then on her own has to be physically told when to stop or to respond sometimes (not hitting her but grabbing her collar). where as my boy is much more affectionate, loves to be close by, more people orientated, but can play and entertain himself with toys alone much more attentive with tone. my girl settled right down when i got my second dog around 2 years of age. they are masters of psychology they need a fair but firm handler. love fast action. and are a all round great dog if you have the time and education abut them

What Breeds Wouldn't You Recommend For A First Time Onwer?
BMAK replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
i think its not so much the dog breed that shouldnt be owned but what the owners shouldnt have for first time dogs as they will be the people influencing it and its behaviours??? does that make sense its hard to decribe what i mean any breed is suitible for first time owner aslong as they have the time to commit to the breeds needs and backgrounds lifesyle, eg owning a husky and not having the time to groom it and run it like they were bred for, those dogs can shed badly if left untouch and love a good hardy run. i think high drive dogs/working breeds/and head strong dogs wouldnt be suitible for first time dog owners unless they are certain its the breed they have time for and can cater to the breeds needs i would love to have certain breeds of dog but because i havent got the space for large breed dogs i dont think ts a suitible for me to own such breeds like danes or mastiffs aussie lover is this what you mean? -
it makes it cheaper if you make up this raw food diet in bulk and then freeze it based on the BARF diet by Dr.Billinghurst to make up your dogs daily dose = 100% *choose a meat* 40% these are the proteins chicken, beef, lamb, rabbit, turkey, pork (i dont like using or giving my dogs any pork products) (fish possible as an extra) small amounts of organs can be added heart liver kiddney but should only make up 10% can BE harmfull if over used *vegetables*30% steaming your veggies will be more benificial tomatoes, peas, carrots, green beens, zucchini, pumkin,Broccoli, Celery, Spinach, Carrot, Ground Flax Seed, Apple, Pear, Grapefruit, Orange..add some parsly *starches* 30% potatoes, brown rice, or pasta types average activity on 2% body weight, highly active dogs double amount per day 20kg -2 patties/per day 30kg -3 p/pd 40kg -4 p/pd TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA A 30 KG DOGS CAN DO VERY WELL ON ABOUT 600 GRAMS OF FOOD PER DAY ON THIS DIET
-
sorry yeah it is 12 patties having one of those days yesterday, yeah my dogs being nearly 30kgs get one patty morning and night which ends up lasting for 3 days for both dogs so it seems expensive

i use revolution i have tried majority of the products not successful, my girl got mites around her eye so we got recomended that as it does mites and heartworm and it worked perfectly and fixed the problem but the only way you can find out what works is by testing them frontline doesnt work for a lot and works for some. have a look into the dog shampoo "Quitich" lotion antiseptic skin treatment for skin care of dogs, cats and horses can be bathed in or aplied by spray bottle or dabbin treatment of various skin conditions such as: Eczema Dermatoses Fungal infections including Ringworm It is a great emergency treatment for Lacerations Wire Cuts Burns Abrasions and other superficial animal wounds

i know this is going a while back above^ but may be an allergy to flea bites *touch wood my dogs have never gotten fleas in my area or from our house environment ! yaya she gets the monthly treatments aswell dont worry  but, when i took my kelpie girl to the property for the day she would come home going insane by the next morning she had chewed her self red raw to the point a massive area of hair had been missing from her back side. we washed her in alovleen and just applied betadine to the red area she continued to stratch and squeel so a trip to the vets turns out she is allergic to the flea bites bad case so before we leave the property she has to be given a capstar to kill them, after the vet trip she was on antibiotics to help her deal with the inchiness and other crap we didnt want her on them but within the next day she had seen a 99% improvement in her behaviour and the area that she had chewed but within a matter of weeks vast improvments on recovery and hair growth. we were using the products(revolution) works for us but it was to the end of the month, but if anyone has a bad case of fleas comfortis is the way to go, i dont have to use it as we raley get any fleas but i definatley know it works by friends and family must be given on a full stomach, a lot of small light weight dogs seem to vomit it up so make sure they have had a big meal and cant be given to dogs with epilepsy

Incident Yesterday .... Child At My Side Gate Wanting To Pat My Dogs
BMAK replied to Tilly's topic in General Dog Discussion
i feel your safest option is to fix the fence by covering it, with what ever you have, it might be much less hassle then dealing with the council over all these stupid laws and signs but a "please do not pat the dogs behind fence" but then again what do people do when they see" DO not touch wet paint" they are going to touch it!!! lol so might be easy to put "please pat dgs and find out" -

aloveen is a aid in soothing and cleansing itchy dry skin on cats and dogs. the Shampoo is formulated with extracts of Oatmeal in an Aloe Vera gel base. i would try to stop washing your dog every week as this strips the dogs of his natural oils in his coat which they need, if you find he has a tendancy of getting an oily coat wash him every few weeks in a shampoo for oily coats then you can just apply the aloveen cond every couple of days if you like the smell. the aloveen shampoo and cond are a great product on the market, i have noticed though that it builds up a oily layer in the dogs coat if using it nearly week (i work in the grooming area) and doesnt thoroughly cleanse the coat, so i would mix up the shampoo and try something different every now and then noramlly you can find other products on the market that are oatmeal based or aloe based which are very good also and less oily but if you like the smell of the aloveen use the conditioner you can always apply it every couple of days for the smell because the shampoo is strong enough on its own but normally changing shampoos wont affect your dog depending on what the shampoo contains, al lot of flea /tick shampoos dry out the coat i have used a mixture of dogs brands on my dogs atm im using TROY oativeen so aloe n oatmeal based leaves them not over powering but clean smell and soft, have used previously fidos white and bright on mostly black dogs found that really good also fidos black shampoo and another black/charcoal shampoo with rotti on the front.

being two head strong males they are bound to fight for dominance and pack leader. My dogs have had a few tiffs nothing serious mind you mostly over bones lasted 5 seconds this was my younger male trying to be dominant and testing my older female. he trys to hump her and my girl will put him in his place by snap towards him. when dogs dont like being told (by others) what to do they will protest - growling biting and fighting can be part of this DA HA can be part of it when they get away with the certain behaviour they perform any how back to where i was haha thoughts**** *maybe you arnt being a pack leader so razor may be feeling he has to take up that role between boss? *is there any factors that can lead you to why he did it on that particular day your smell, behaviour, reaction when he got hme from the vets or boss' *how many times has razor done this behaviour to other dogs that he has known? dogs live in the present they have a fight they move on they establish there pack and when the role of top dog isnt being forfilled one will step up not always wanting to be leader but its what the pack needs. are you able to controll both dogs when they are taken for walks, if so walk them together but make sure they are beside or behind and not in front so they know who the pack leader is .. do some research into the "dog whisperer" with cesar.m

Did You Buy Your Puppy From A Less Than Reputable "breeder"?
BMAK replied to PoppyDog's topic in General Dog Discussion
QLD have major issues with dogs that look like pit bulls but are infact eng or am staffy's it is insane :S well im guessing my two dogs are from BYB but my first dog came from a fantastic pedigree line and papers to prove so shes has proven to be a dog that a lot of people would really want from her breeding lines. and my other dog i was more feeling sorry for him although he had his mother dad and brother from first litter there that were all happy and looking healthy and all the pups had been sold except two, i should have gone to a known breeder, because it eliminates health and joint problems as well as knowing the dogs healthy and friendly but he has turned out to be a great dog except his few issues of DA to big dogs. but when you are buying from a rep breeder you deffinately know what out comes to expect from the pup and like how it is going to behave like aswell as his long term health. you can get many lovely dogs from rescue groups but you will never know the long term effects for its health because of its back ground.
