  1. one of my kelpies has noonbarra lines and my other one is half barb kelpie half working kelpie, alot of these good breeders bred these dogs for hard long hour work like "noonbarra" etc. They are really lovely dogs and can make fantastic pets no doubt but personally i feel without everyday running can become very demanding as a pet without the right attention on a daiy basis. alot of people feel that border collies adapt better to city and pet life, and are a more relaxed dog ? personal preferance?, but unless you have the time for a working line kelpie that has been bred for hard intense work like their parents and grandparets, the pup wil almost naturally have that instict in it and will be quite active and full on, thats why you see alot of working kelpies at the pound because they end up in the wrong hands. they are great dogs they just need the right owners
  2. i just want to say i feel obedience, agility etc are tricks or some form of tricks or a series put together making your dog perform for a treat or toy which he probably wouldnt do with out influence or some part natural behaviour any one else agree??? What tricks does your dog do? tricks that arnt obedience agility type> one of my dogs does almost everything i can think of that you put under performance tricks yet my other dog has never naturaly done anything that i could put a cue on so back up and spin is about it for him Why did you teach that trick/those tricks in particular? mental stimulation, to see what my dog can actually do for a reward if he didnt want to do it i didnt force him, she performed a natural behaviour and i rewarded it. most tricks can be very useful in everyday life Was it something your dog gravitated naturally toward? majority of them, some i influenced her like roll over and wave Did you teach as a pup, or as an older dog? pup and older dog dogs are domesticated so i dont find it is cruel when they are not living in the wild. where as if i was to see a bear tiger dolphin they belong in the wild so i see being kept in pens and areas not suitable for them to be doing tricks for entertainment?
  3. my dogs are restrained im not stupid enough to let my dogs not be, they dont hang out of the car either i was saying they are more of a distraction being in the car when they are restrained without the window down this isnt some popularity vote i dont know why you are having a go saying "I honestly cannot see many of the people here following your advice and allowing their dog to hang out of the car" so speak for yourself and if others would like to tell me then they can themselves. you see dogs on utes hanging around with their head situated around the car dont you.
  4. i never knew it was illegal? only if they werent tied they are more of a distraction with it up barking louding constantly tangling themseves in there seatbelts and i havent been pulled over with police driving by ?
  5. only if you have company in the car winding down the window and having the dogs head stick out while someone hold onto them or there body while attached to lead keeps mine from crying and fresh air did them the word of good
  6. i have heard myself some pretty herific stories on tail chasing some started off as boredom an ended in OCD and self multulation of the tail i know you might think its funny now but you wont be laughing when it becomes compolsive
  7. my dog had something similar, she has really bad flea allergy and everytime we took her to the property she got riddled touch wood we dont have any fleas in our environment here at home and our dogs dont get them unless they go to parks beaches etc where the environment is where multiple dogs go so they bring the fleas to the environment. anyways she gets a capstar to kill all fleas then revolution she was also on a steroid type tablet for 3 weeks that slowly weened her off them but normally when its around the tail area its a sure sign its fleas so it may be your environment you have to treat first, but maybe your dog has gotten a reaction and is sentitive to grass or something where he will overact and it becomes a natural behaviour to keep stratching till its red raw food allergy maybe but a good aloveen bath and cond and see the reaction could have itchy skin?
  8. if it wasnt for these rescue groups all these dogs would be dead sometimes the majority wins over minoirty help 20 dogs or help 1 !!! ok some are stricter then others but they do there best to ensure dogs dont end up at the shelters again i have heard of dogs being rehomed 4 TIMES! MAYBE IF THEY HAD STRICTER RULES EARILER THIS DOGS WOULD BE TOYED WITH MULTIPLE TIMES, SO NOW THEY DO HAVE STRICTER RULES I BET YOU WONT SEE HIM BACK AT THE POUND? there are many pros and cons to rescue groups they want to have dogs that get the required amount of attention and exercise on a daily basis if not fair other wise hes better off with a different family if you work full time when does the dog get a chance to play 1 hr exercise and interaction a day isnt very much is it ? the dog may be out of a pound but its not fair on the dog to be stuck behind 4 walls i think! dogs that are bred and instinctually have characteristic that show they need alot of mental and physical deserve to find the right home for example a working kelpie no way in hell i would give that dog to a family that doesnt include it in activities where he wont be worked, like in agility herding or obedience.
  9. i had a dog stole a whole tub about 500 grams worth ate the whole thing licked clean nothing happened not even sick even lost a gram of weight in that one week soo not sure but it had reverse effects on my fella (kelpie 10 mnths)
  10. hi i love to read and find out about dogs diets and food that is good for them and knowing bones are good !! i try my hardest to try and make my 4.5 yr old to eat them! she loves her cooked and raw beef meat yet if i give her a raw chicken wing or neck or carcase it is just not happening. my other fella lovesssss his bones or anyfood he cant get except prawns he he but she likes to bury and guard her chicken wings neck etc but not eat them until they are really rotten and dirty and smelly.. typical! but she is like a chicken her self she wont leave the nest where she has buried it so we no longer give them to her because its to much of a worry with two dogs. getting two meals a day we have tried to fast her over night skipping her other half meal thinking she will be hungry in the morning to see if the chicken is too much food but nope still one eat it. i have tried to exercise her to exhaution them feed her still no hope haha in the long run i dont care if she doesnt eat them i just wont to find out why? maybe texture, smell, the bone inside i have had to cut part of the chicken wing open and get rid of the bone it was a 3 cm piece and she took 20 minutes to eat it after spitting it out for a bit. ~~so instead of bone we avoid pork /smoked bones heard some stories so she gets shark cartlidge, fish jerkey (fishskins and parts died together) ~~
  11. being an older dog as you said sometimes there bodys may not take in the all the good stuff that is in their diet it may leave them with dull malting coat and itchy or dry skin bad breath and all out bad health and muscle joint heath in the long run because what they have been fed. there are many suppliments if people cannot affort to buy premium food for the loved one. You would notice a dog fed on pal crap can food, will poo heaps runnie constistancy compared to a dog fed on a premium raw diet or high kibble long term effects as well as short as well as there over all condition but there are other things you would consider some dogs prefer and react differently to types of food that you feed them. omega 3 and other oils *fish like sardines etc *flax seed oil *extra virgin live oil * shark cartlidge the list just goes on for natural suppliments to help benifit your dogs coat and health. smetimes switching the diet f your dog over a few weeks you may see your dogs is getting a softer shiny coat compared to before you switched food. some dogs dont like change being an older dog they may have this problem? a good run through of a brush that was designed for the dogs coat . different brushes will do different jobs as dumb as it may sound if i was to brush a chihuahua with a slicker brush i wouldn't strip the coat of dead hairs compared if i used a furmination comb designed to do that job, longer coats furmination still works as its very fine toothed and rakes but diet will be your first step to improvement of a dog over all health good luck
  12. sorry no, i own two dogs two kelpies one male and one female and foster sometimes and atm i am curently minding a 8wk pup so three dogs atm
  13. some people are better instructors(obedience) then dog handlers(behaviour and correction) i for one am one of those people i would say i am a good owner i try my hardest to do everything right by my dog from exercise love n food boundaries etc... i have see other instructors that own two aggressive dogs (wont name as she is a lovely lady but bad handler) . and both dogs have attacked my male dog mine was onlead both times and the lady had them offlead knowing her dogs a bolters and D.A two separate occasions my boy wasnt even making a challege aproaching or eye contact so he does ignore other agg dogs but its on touch he goes. i have only had two dogs in my life time so far but with a few fosters and temp cares. my first dog same breed from different lines is submissive and normally wont interact with majority of dogs she will stand around but wont sniff or make eye contact. sometimes lay down and sleeps between a pack she is just that calm, but totally different kettle of fish with this boy we got him desexed early thinking it might make a difference but i wouldnt be able to stand between him and a dog half a metre away if i was to hold or pull his lead away he would get anxiety and then focus like a hawk aiming to snap so i have to have a loose lead if im near. thanks bully going to read that artical and Aiden your a big help im going to read up on click to calm he responds well to clicker training and not harsh methods if i was to raise my voice he would get upset( other dog i have to be so consistant and pull her outside for instance where as my boy will do it with a handsignal only, it sucks that he isnt friendly i always feel upset that he wont be able to run on sand and interact with other dogs the only time his aggresson occurs is when stupid people dont listen and let there dog approach i know he isnt friendly and try to avoid the learnt behaviour but it doesnt help when there are more irrisponsible owners then myself even tho my dog is not dog friendy. so i know its not all me making him aggressive but his breeding is highly involved thanks guys
  14. the anxiety, shows in other areas like his whining high pitch, but for other reasons when he isnt around dogs. he isnt very good at giving warnings to others like growling or barking its quick and fast but doesnt leave the other dog in pain or bleeding sometimes he doesnt even touch them. he basically wants to be left alone yet when little dogs are near he just loves them he wants to be friendly but he doesnt know how to with bigger dogs? we currently have another rescue pup with us until sunday he has had a snap at it because it got in his face.. it cried and he didnt really care to much to react just went and layed down what you are saying does make sense aiden, dogs minds are simple yet so complex for humans to understand wel my dog and his signals are haha thanks guys
  15. How do you know? My fear aggressive boy does EXACTLY what you've described. thanks for your replys's picking up nearly 30 kg of muscle and fat isnt going to work haha! i do avoid going near bigger dogs at all cost unless he knows them *he doesnt lash out or lunge at dogs walking past (isnt scared by them is happy to wag his tail the sly thing) *its only on contact that he changes instantly, he doesnt hide or run away *if he doesnt like the dog he snaps almost instant he doesnt back up or cower while doing this just stands still off lead he is a different dog more friendly to larger dogs but he doesnt stay still often enough to have a go because they are not near. *he picks up straight away the dominant dogs mostly staffys so i avoid them altogether (i see they are threatening his dominance he trys to sit on my other dog at home- dominance) maybe it could be a fear thing? i dont really know im no expert but the signs arn't clear but i dont see the signs that i would consider fear he pretends he is friendly to some and will be submissive them suddenly snap as soon as they get in his face at home he trys he hardest to let my other dog know he owns her constantly reminding her by grabbing her check layingon her he has redirected aggression at training onlead > ""Redirected aggression is a relatively common type of aggression but one that is often misunderstood by pet owners. If a dog is somehow provoked by a person or animal he is unable to attack, he may redirect this aggression onto someone else. For example, two family dogs may become excited, and bark and growl in response to another dog passing through the front yard; or two dogs confined behind a fence may turn and attack each other because they can't attack an intruder.
  16. with the kelpies they are the same line of dogs but they go way way back and from there on they were bred to be i think less of a high instinct that are a more compainion dog and built differently for different reasons and they only allow show dogs to be solid colours so blacks and red etc are only allowed to be shown not sure why my kelpie whos a blk n tan is just gorgeous and i would have loved to show her.. anyways some people just prefer that type of dog but when you own or get one you have to remember their purpose, because its inbuild into them from their line some arnt as high drive or instinctively born to herd or work. but if you own one you may have to work them mentally alot more then physically? due to there breeding and type Don't know where you heard that about the colours. Quoted directly from the ANKC Kelpie breed standard under colours: "Black, black and tan, red, red and tan, fawn, chocolate, and smoke blue", so all those colours can be shown. well what i have read In Australia, there are two separate registries for Kelpies. "Working Kelpies" are registered with the Working Kelpie Council (WKC), which is the primary authority on the breed standard, and/or the State Sheepdog Workers Association. The WKC encourages breeding for working ability, and allows a wide variety of coat colors. The "Working Kelpie" cannot be shown, due to the wide standards allowed by the WKC."Show Kelpies" are registered with the Australian National Kennel Council, which encourages breeding for a certain appearance and limits dogs to certain colors. Only Show Kelpies may be shown in Australia

  20. HAHAHAH that video is soo darn cute! GOING TO SHARE THAT WITH A FEW FAMILY MEMBERS ! off to try that now with short hair dog so off to find dangly things, you can get your dog to crawl by having he laying down and zig zaging the food a bit so his head follows the food and one paw at a time he follows it!
  21. hi, with the local obedience club they will probably only be able to teach him obedience/trial work, not what he probably needs like teaching the dog to listen for the crossing sounds and to avoid obsticals in the way ? at my obedience club we had a blind man and his wife they had an older rescue golden retriever, he and the dog went into trials without the judges even knowing he was blind and passed. The man and his dog were able to complete high obedience work but i think you are going to find, it is going to be very hard to find someone in the newcastle area that understand and knows how to teach the dog the work that guide dogs are required to learn.. without having experience i think there might be a guide dog place in hamilton but as you said he doesnt want to go to them. good luck
  22. hi murphymoo have you ever thught of tying a long rope or lead to him while you are home and he is outside so you can grab the lead and correct him when he barks ? i have heard the cirtonella collars are useful for when you go out and do work to cease the barking. if you can monitor you dog over the next few day to see precisely What and When he barks it will give you a better idea at Why and When to react to correct his behaviour. you can always use toy and treat dispersers to distract him for at least 30/60 minutes while you are away like filled kongs and treat balls for his dinner breakfast to waste his alone time and get him mentally stimulated. after he has been exercised before hand all the best. thank god i only have one neighbour and hes gone 80 % of the time other wise our dogs would let him know when someone walks down the private lane way beside our house.. they werent ment to be the guarding type. p.s no idea whow to distract him from the possums as they come and go random times of the night good luck
  23. HI guys before you start to comment or provide any help/questions/answers.. i dont have the time or money atm to see a proffessional trainer or behaviourist so if thats your answer thanks but i cant afford it ATM. here we go! i own two kelpies one female and had a foster male undesexed for the past few weeks they had a few scuffles nothing serious the other dog had not pack manners what so ever in our house now all three get along great with no problems of D.A 2.5 year old male desexed "mixed signal" but loves every little dog (MAC) << MY PROBLEM i obtained him at 6 weeks we did puppy.P.S. he was never ever interested in other dogs didnt want to play or intereact just did his own thing but if a dog jumped on his he would growl so his aggression majority is from his breeding. our p.p.s. teacher was Sh.t so we never really picked up on his D.A side because we didnt know that was the start, only even having submissive dogs we never understood dog triggers and behaviours that were not friendly or appropriate to confront. my dog is obedient and manner trained and is not problem near or around other dogs (all sizes) until they approach him we tell people before they come close or approach that he isnt ready to go near other dogs because he doesnt like them but they are stupid enough to come near and he snaps and they wonder why!!!??? we ( myself and my mum ) try to avoid this bad behaviour as he will learn it more. he doesnt go out of his way to chase attack or savagely bite another dog. its only if they come to him in his face and personal bubble or touch him/even sniff and are treatening his dominance and size he reacts almost instantly. he is friendly with a few dogs at obedience training that are bigger then him a lab and 3 separate border collies from diff family's and all the little dogs we have no problem with. he knows is pack position with these other dogs. i know its not a fear reaction and when i do correct him in O.T when he is on his martingale or check.c he lashes out to who ever is near him and snaps ( my lead is tight) so i have read up on that but i know i cant correct him the same way you would with some D.A types by checking him. i have to separate myself atleast 1/2 metre to 1 m away when doing about turns or weaving i avoid sometimes. and encourage his friendy behaviour and loose lead. ~>>>>so what im asking is this personal bubble Dog Aggression common amoung dogs and how can i correct him when he does this behaviour (snapping) on lead when they get in his bubble ?? <<<<<~ thanks guys
  24. this guy must be the biggest idiot! poor dog if it actually was hit trying to impress him.. biggest turn off to all dog lovers i bet shows you what a d**k head he is
  25. HI EVERYONE this is my first topic post i can only tell what i remember/seen this small round lump is on the right side of my 3 yr kelpies head it is about 5 mm to 1 cm wide cuple mil heigh with a few hairs on it looks like a semi circle side on my brother found it while patting him a few weeks back and thought it culd just that he hit his head (my other kelpie has had something similar but it went away) i didn't notice this lump the day before he even slept in my room that night and i didnt notice that anything was there it was alot smaller and you couldnt see it because his hair was covering it over the top but now it is visible and a little bit red i have felt it and it doesnt have a head that is could be a cyst and it isnt really think or deep in the tissue from what i can feel he isnt bothered by it or me touching it im just wondering if it could spread or be something infection/cancerous ? it has stayed the same for about 2 weeks or so and i really cant afford a huge vet bill atm, if it has to be tested or removed if its nothing bad i dont mind it being there. does anyone have a small idea of what it could be so i can do some more research before having to take him to the vets which will cost one arm and maybe two legs haha >>>>click below<<<<<< http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2111&aid=424 LOOKS SIMILAR TO THIS PICTURE FEATURED AT THE TOP A BIT SMALLER WITH A FEW HAIRS in this website i have gone through but im no vet ahha
