Are There Any Apbt Rescue Groups In The Act?
BMAK replied to ruthless's topic in General Dog Discussion
i would say no because of the breed but have look at staffy rescue they may know or be able to help?? -
There is an episode on cesar millan about this with a malt constantly licking her arm while patting, but have heard it can be an affectionate sign/submissive/demanding/ownership behaviour.. so not sure what to think? I know my dogs will lick me while im patting them damanding me to continue if i stop (i hate lickers) i stop patting them remove my arm and ignore them, some times i will walk away or tell them no and they stop. But if your not keen on it, a firm NO and stop patting the dog, pat him only whe he is calm and relaxed and not demanding you to continue may learn patting come when im calm and not asking for attention. Then again being a foster dog it could be a sign of smething else?

my pair do it when they are excited, will whale and growl with soft toys in their mouthy and when people enter the home when they are happy and excited to see them, sounds a bit loud but we know they are harmless and just want to be heard. glad im not the only one with growly dogs.
-
yeah im not a fan of giving the dogs pork heard a few stories but she gets the greenies and some other procesed soft bone (urgh) but would be easier to just buy bones. no cracked/ broken or bad odours from mouth ?
-
Her teeth are still pretty white and not worn down much she gets other stuff to clean her teeth but they are expensive for what they are. She has never eaten bones from what i can remember she would bury them in the back yard when she was the only dog and we never really saw them again I will check her mouth tomorrow when there is better light, don't think she would have a dental disease problem. As she doesn't have smelly breath. I never thought of maybe a jaw problem, she catches a tennis ball and soccer ball ok ? she isn't very venturous in eating a lot of things she normally get's kibble as main diet then when ever we cook up large pots of meat and veggies they both get that or fish added to their meals or what ever we give her at training. i gave the other dog shanks because he eats necks too fast like it has no bone in it and a tad pointless to give him it if it isn't cleaning his teeth on the way down his throat even though he really likes them. she does eat slabs of raw meat (not 10cm big though), i gave her one today it took her away to realise it had no bone in it but. i'm not going to stave her just because she doesn't eat bones thats a bit cruel ;)
-
I buy a lot of raw meat bones and chicken necks/wings and some times cut up shanks to give to my two dogs one will demolish the bones and the other dog will not even touch the meat that contains a bone. She isn't an old dog (5 years) and i would like her to start eating some more meat and bones for her diet and for clean teeth but it is getting to a point where i will just let her stave until dinner if she doesn't touch her bone, trying to make her eat it, (thinking she was just being fussy) but she just wont eat it. Does anyone know, of ayway i can get her to eat some bones or another food that can clean teeth because the bones just get wasted as there are so many for just one dog other wise (she will eat raw chicken and raw meat as long as it contains no bone and isn't tough to chew) what is wrong with my girl!

most kelpies you will see are a dog with a love of personal space when it comes to most things! He may have had a bad incident that has stopped him from trusting people?? 8 months is a while, but he still may need time, he may just not like being close to people? Let him work his way to you rather than force him to be there and high value rewards when he comes close. Clicker training and Targeting with high value rewards might work with either food or toy rewards, bonding time through activites ?? With my parents old cat ( i know, not a dog but still) when i was much younger my mother said just to ignore her and she will come. Being a young kid i would pester her because she wouldn't come to me but she would go to my mum even thought mum hardly ever patted her she was quite independant and not a cat that would come close most of the time so ignoring her worked for the cat, then again differnt kettle of fish. Good luck

He obviously likes animals or he wouldn't be a vet, right? His father is a animal vet in newcastle and Chris regulary visits, i've met chris multiple times even been in the surgery room with him alone just me him and a dog whilst he has been doing surgery. I can honestly say he is very friendly and a bubbly person and a nice guy. But he deffinately get's cut down by all the "tall poppy's" out there. Can you honestly say that he is an idiot! he is a vet for god sake he can't be that dumb? the show is obviously set up and produced to get ratings, that is what makes the program interesting (to some). the real world and behind the scenes is ttally different. For some of us have saying he is an idiot. people make mistakes he is only human, no one makes you watch the show, i don't watch it i don't find multiple ad's running every minute entertaining or interesting it's more talk than action any way. my 2 cents haha i don't mean to offend anyone just stating the facts, that he is a nice guy behind the scenes
-
just going to add my 2 cents into it, by what i have read micky moo you look to be your the one being/trying to be the pack leader as such with this dog, by the looks this dog is your mum's pet (not sure). When some one is scared of a dog and they are trying to be pack leader (your mother) the dog can sense that she is nervous and not confident when handling the dog, another reason why she is finding it hard to give the dog disiplen, boundaies and limitations on where the dog should be sleeping and controling the unwanted habits. She wants to become more of a pack leader and to be able to feel confident when dealing with this dog. By the sounds and she is unable to do so and a bit scared of it happening again, until your get the advise from a proffessional leaving a lead on the dog at a length that you don't have to risk being snapped/bitten but are still able to give a firm correction or direct the dog from a distance to do what you ask and taking control it may give her a confidence boost without getting in the dogs bubble. good luck

Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Original Ultra What To Think?
BMAK replied to BMAK's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Just as a matter of interest, is there a sticker on the bag that says this food is not suitable for cats? Did you buy it at a Pet Barn Store? Yes from pet barn, they only sell the one type from natural balance kibble range. there is "nothing" on the dog bag that says that it is only for dogs, you can feed it to puppies so it can't be bad ? but there is a rrange made for cats, but i have no clue if pet barn sell it. thanks guys looks like a good responce, it says to feed between 3-4 cup for the weight range of my adult dogs, looks to be wayyy too much, is it ?? so i decided two cups dailys for each dog here + bones and veggies when ever -
i just bought nearly 15 kgs worth of this premium kibble dick van patten's natural balance original ultra (which is suitable for pups and adults as i have 2 of each atm) the ingredients don't look nasty. I was previously using (for the adults only) pro plan sensitive skin and stomach around $133 a bag eeek! then changed to nutro Chicken Meal, Rice & Oatmeal Formula for Adult Dogs it was a lot cheaper than the pro plan S.S.stomach but the dogs weren't fussed on it. So, today i had to get some more dry food and knew that they didn't really like the nutro so again went to go back to the expensive stuff but they had none and the other pro plans have corn and wheat etc so i didn't want that. Instead i decided to buy natural balance kibble.. i gave a few bits to the pups they loved it then again they would eat anything gave a few to each adult nothing didnt want it ?? why, change of diet? not hungry? didn't like it? any suggestions on this brand?

I am currently using ALOVEEN shampoo and do like using it and my dogs are on premium kibble/and raw diet with veggies etc. I have used many brands of shampoo but would like to find a brand that works for both dogs coat. both are kelpies with a double coat one is more wirery on top and the other dog's coat is soft and thicker i would like to to find one that can clean the coat out but doesn't dry it out and doesn't leave an oily residue like some medicated shampoo's can and also nice smelling. they come out with a shiny coat when i wash/groom them as well as i add a coat spray or conditioner when they look a bit dirty instead of washing. WHAT BREED OF DOG DO YOU HAVE? TYPE OF COAT? WHAT DO YOU USE? AND DOES IT WORK? My dogs tend to get dry skin quite easily (i give them some entrichments of different oils in their diet but still not enough) as they love swimming beach, pool, and mud puddles at parks i want them to be clean but i don't like washing them everytime they get wet because of the natural oils so when they go to the beach and i rinse them off with clean water i want a shampoo they arnt left with a dry coat after repeditive rinsing so now looking for a good brand of shampoo. All ideas welcome.

Hello, i have two dogs and i don't like doing the same exercises and activities with my dog every week, i hate having a Schedule planned out for my two dogs at certain times of the day as i my plans change every hour and sometimes things come up and i don't want to dissapoint my dogs if I'm not home until late. so i want to do different things with them during the week so they have a interesting time and aren't expecting the same boring thing on a walk etc when i come home. I would like to know what everyone else does to change their dog/s ritual up so they don't become bored? Do you take them to the park/beach/lake/off lead are/ bush walks etc. Being busy i dont always have the time myself, to wear them out so off lead stuff works great my two on a weekly basis i try to do the following either morning or night or both, bush walks (off lead), chuck it stick /soccer ball at park they suck at fetch (off lead), bike ride attached, small walks around neighbour hood, drive somewhere then walk, lake walks, obedience wed and sundays. Is there anything you can think of i can do? mental or physical ideas welcome

Comon Things People Dont Realise About Your Breed
BMAK replied to MonElite's topic in General Dog Discussion
No kelpie's aren't hard work,. They need more mental stimulation then physical. They don't make good guard dogs, but great watch dogs but would lick you to death first. And no, just because i own a few kelpie's does not mean my hands are full and i should be fit they are more than happy to be lounge lizards all day until you grab a lead. That wide berth people take when im walking my dogs .. why ? because of there colour (blk and blk n tan) thats all oh wait .. people think they are hyper, they just need the right owner for their breed. -
Hi guys i am really sorry if i have or am about to repeat what you have just typed, i had a small brief read of the top section but this happened the other day and was wondering can you help? i do obedience and don't own solid strong dogs, but i was talking to one of the men behind the office counters and another man and his partner approached and were registering to become a member on the form one question asks "BREED" i knew that they had a amstaff, blue n white they told me as she is just devine and i have seen them many times before. Well anyway back to the point the man behind the counter took their word for that she is a amstaff not a APBT as he himself could not tell the difference (without testing) and she was friendly but "club rules" states no restricted or dangerous dogs allowed". I dont want to see people pushed away becasue of the deeds of other dogs do that stop this beauty becoming a member and he didnt want to go against the legal system if that dog had been restricted breed but my question is is there any way you can determine the distinct difference between and american staff and a american P.B.T not character and personality, but size, shape, colour, face shape, height??? again sorry for reposting

Help Needed With "stand For Examination"
BMAK replied to koalathebear's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
stand can be tricky for dogs that love people and know they shouldnt be doing anything other then sitting for patts as thats what we have tought then in manners you said she does know her sit and her stands but is probably uncertain to why she has to stand for a pat when she normally sits haha well, exactly how jigsaw said so i don't have to repeat myself and to save you reading more, you can still use your food if she is a food focused dog but stand beside her with a food lure at her mouth and your left hand on her stifle so she is next to your left leg have someone(someone that she gets excited for) circle you and elbie every time they pass (maintaining the stand) you can feed her get them to move closer, and everytime she gets a teat for staying in a stand eventually when she isnt excited about the person waking past the can gentally touch her back quickly while she is being treated with the food eventally she recognises that every time she stands to get patted food comes and eventually you can *use different people *different positions, infront oposide side not having to hold her knee joint anymore *delayed rewards instead of a lure if she goes back to sitting go back to standing beside her multiple times so you can quickly correct her -
I use revolution for my 2x dogs and it works really well for them and the environment never had a problem with it. Every 3 months i do intestinal worming tablets. Money isn't much of an issue there for me because i dont have fleas that often so i dont need to buy a lot. i dont like using to many chemicals on my pets, so i only use the flea treatment when needed but still do the heart worm tablets when not on revolution and continue with worming. Comfortus i think it is called is a flea oral tablet that works really well for dogs, but it is pricey $$(not really what you want, i know but!). it has shown to be a reputable brand fairly new to the market and should last the recommended time to last so you should have to administer any more then the recommended amount unlike some of the other brands that dont last. if your interested and them keep on doing oral worming tablets for every 3 months. sorry i cant help with the other brands as i havent used them, but nothing else has worked for me except revolution but it has to work for your dogs and your wallet good luck.

There is a lot of scope between only giving the dog food and choking the dog til it passes out because you had to show the dog 'you were prepared to kill it to make it submit' < not sure if that bottom bit is for me in responce but, i wasnt the one who said the kill to submit i was the one who said you need to gain respect and trust NOT "you let the dog know you can kill it " he he

I believe he came into the US as an illegal immigrant having gained a bit of a local name for himself as the "dog guy" in his village, with his instinctual ability to deal with dogs which I think he credits to his grandfather (?). His background is dog grooming in the US, I think with a bit of training and self-education. No quals that I know of. I agree long term follow up would be interesting as, like with other trainers/behaviourists, the real work has got to be the follow-through by the owners, unless they have radically changed their behaviours the risk of recidivism would be great IMO. p.s edited to say i thought respect came from calm assertive pack energy? not making the dog fear you by him knowing you can kill him. also its the owner that has to follow up on the trainers @ SpecTraining i think he was a dog walker not a groomer haha couldnt imagine him being one

food reinforcement can only go so far if a dog is focus im sure a bickie isnt going to stop him from biting, not always postitive reinforcement works for a 100% red zone 30 kg or above dog i like her methods but i have seen her advise people to put there dog down because it bit people i know family comes first but, cesar has proven multiple multiple times that his way works for dogs that have no resort left. majority of what he does is common sense, i like cesar but his methods are used when there are no resorts left. if it works why not use the alfa role ? i would rather that! then have a dog that would bite someone or another dog if i couldnt control it. he does advise people not to use his methods if you told someone to touch/poke there dog 99% would not do it correctly and then decide his method doesnt work when they dont know how to correctly administer it."he did tell you to leave it for proffessionals" i would like to know why this alfa role is so bad and why a lot of people dont like it ??( not for it, or against it)

petshopboys near where i am are very good with delivery etc and are nice people not sure if your dealing with the same people but here they do a great job ad normally very competitive with prices at petbarn S,S and stomach pro plan is normally around $133 ish depending if its on sale then its cheaper

they should be looking for a dog that is 1) suitable for the boxers temp 2) a dog the "whole family" can handle 3) not a dog suited for the 10yr wants (i was asking for a dog since i could walk boy no way in hell i could train, correct, disiplen feed the dog i would give up even now im struggling to totally furfill ever need to my dogs and im young, its going to be the parents doing all of that!!! get her a bunny or something that doesnt need the 24/7 interaction and work. if they are going to get a family dog a wire haired type would be easily groomed. alot of the small terriers would be suitable not keen on the westies though(sorry to those that are responsible owners of that breed) but i know ones that have been in the wrong hands and end up really bad. french bulldog scotty Tibetan Spaniel lovely dog border terrier (WH) Dachshund (WireHaired) cairn terrier (WH) lakeland terrier seems lovely cocker spaniel (needs grooming) Schipperke

(its not my dogs) at o.training there are many people with little fluff balls who look quite nice and are friendly to people but just go crazy at the sign of other dogs no matter the size or status. one inperticular has actually slipped out of the harness it was wearing and went to attack another small sized dog. she took it to the vets and got a hormone injection or something to reduce the teststerone but hasnt seemed to work im interested on how people should try to calm and stop the behaviour with a dog of such size with such low attention span. with out picking the dog up i would like to know ? all i have thought of is to have the dog sit and stay and try to focus the attention on something while another dog walks past. as there is a lady who looks like she needs some help

some people put panty hoses on the line weighted down low so the dog can actually grab it but fill it with bad tasting stuff like pepper, lemon, spicy stuff so when the dog grabs it he doesnt like the taste so lets go
