We have a 12 month old group 6 neuter. He is entered on 2 June @ Bulla and 29 June @ Wangaratta and we had decided these would be his last shows as there is never any competition. I'll see if the owner will reconsider and enter him on July 13. -
Thanks for the info :)

That's interesting to get your thoughts given you fought for it in Darwin. We are considering a similar 'fight' in Melbourne, which was why I posted this poll to get some opinions. If you have time, could you PM me and tell me how you went about it? e.g. did you get a petition going? Thanks!
-
Yes, but in the end, the judge must decide if the exhibit is worthy of challenge points...the SAME as in the regular classes. We see MANY substandard dogs (entire) shown in the regular classes by newbies...why would this be considered any different than showing a neuter? In the end, the judges give the points...the people either accept their dog isn't up to snuff, or they don't. Agreed!

Just talking Royals. We've attended a few of the Vic neuter shows (although they are few and far between.)
-
There are 4 classes of neuters: Class 15 Puppy Neuter - for neuter dogs aged six and under 12 months Class 16 Junior Neuter - for neuter dogs aged nine and under 18 months Class 17 Intermediate Neuter - for neuter dogs aged 18 and under 36 months Class 18 Open Neuter - for neuter dogs aged six months or over I have never seen classes 15-17, only ever class 18. That's fine as there are very few neuters being show. But in my opinion all Royals should at least have open neuters dogs and bitches (i.e. 18 and 18a). Currently at Royals: In Vic and NSW, neuters are not allowed at all. Canberra and SA have neuter sweepstakes, however to my knowledge you can't get points for sweepstakes. In WA only veteran neuters can be entered. Darwin does have open neuters (classes 18 and 18a) in the Darwin Show. How is it that Darwin is the most progressive?!? My thoughts: Responsible ownership should be promoted. Desexing for those who do not want to breed is a good idea, not just to prevent accidental litters but also often for temperament and health reasons (reduces cancer risk). Once a girl has a couple of litters, she should be desexed as it is the responsible thing to do and avoids lots of problems and mess for the owners if they don't intend to breed her again. If neuters were allowed in the Royals I have no doubt it would, within a couple of years, lead to an increase in the number of neuters being shown generally as it would be seen as more accepted and prestigious and, frankly, worth the effort. Anything that promotes desexing and educates people as to its importance is a good idea as there are far too many dogs and not enough homes, and so many people think "oh, I have a nice dog so I'll have a litter or two and make a bit of money". They have no idea that it really isn't a money making exercise and it should be left to those who are doing it only for the betterment of the breed.

Thanks Rottshowgirl, I'll have a look at that :)

My pet peeve is that neuters are not catered for in the Royals (at least not the Royal's i've looked at - Vic, SA, NSW). Why not?!? Responsible ownership should be promoted. Received last night :)
-
Has anyone received their numbers yet? We haven't, and the cheque hasn't been cashed either Tried calling Joan but no answer and her message bank is full.
-
Absolutely Ish. I'll PM you :)
-
With summer here, I thought someone may want to buy a pet crate fan. It has never been used as we unfortunately stopped showing our boy before we needed to use this. I paid $27.00. Will sell for $20.00 inc postage (although if you are in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne I can deliver).
-
My cavalier, Dallas, is nicknamed "Dim Sim" or "Dimmy" (courtesy of my brothers) and he now responds to it. Our Saint is nicknamed "Slobberchops" for obvious reasons. My boy Charlie is nicknamed "nugget" (again, courtesy of my brothers). No idea why. Our dearly departed Rottie, Cassie, was nicknamed "Schnee".
-
Hi Miss Emma. We are entered into this also with our St Bernard. What breed is your Baby Puppy? It too is our first show ever so a little daunting! You won't be the only newbie out there :)
-
I'd also like to know the answer to the above. We are about to enter our first show next month and I had no idea we had to dress up

Separation Anxiety Causing Inappropriate Peeing Inside?
allie181 replied to allie181's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks Lavendargirl. Unfortunately my mum isn't getting a cav. She's always had rotties. She lost her 10 year old rottie 6 months ago and still can't look at another rottie. So she's decided to get another big dog but one that doesn't resemble a rottie at all - she's chosen a St Bernard!!! Insane, I know. But she's been through a lot over the past few years and this is the first thing that has made her smile so I can't say no. But I have invested in several baby gates so I can create safe havens for my 2 boys, and I've stressed the importance of her training him to be gentle with my 2 boys. However, both Dallas and Charlie are very social. We go to the dog park or dog beach most weekends and they always gravitate to the biggest dog, so I don't think they'll mind having a St Bernard in the house. I'm a little more worried about mum's Persian cat! p.s. I've started working on Charlie already. When I got home from work, instead of greeting him excitedly when he met me at the door, I walked past him and ignored him. He followed me for a few minutes, then gave up and went into the lounge and started playing with his toys on his own. Amazing! After about 15 minutes I then said hello to him and gave him a cuddle. He also tried to wrangle his way onto the couch last night but I said no and gave him and Dallas some toys and they started playing. I think with persistance we will get on top of this issue. (Fingers crossed I don't receive a call from home saying he's peed inside again! ) -
Separation Anxiety Causing Inappropriate Peeing Inside?
allie181 replied to allie181's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks for your replies. I will get him vet checked to ensure he doesn't have a UTI. I will also do what you suggest Lavendergirl and start separating him from for short periods me even when I am at home. My mother is getting a puppy in 3 weeks' time. Part of me wonders if he somehow knows that there is a new addition coming and that is why he is acting up, but surely that can't be it?!? -
I adopted Charlie, a4 year old Tibetan Spaniel x Cavalier, almost 12 months ago today. He joined my other Cavalier (Dallas) who is now 2 years old. Apart from a few accidents in the first few weeks, he has been well behaved with using the doggie door and going to the toilet outside. It didn't take too long for him to becoming quite clingy with me, but it just seems to be getting more and more obsessive. He used to be content lying on his bed beside the couch while I was watching tv but in the last 2 weeks or so has decided he needs to lie with me on the couch. He stands up on his hind legs and puts his paws on the couch with his nose practically touching my face and holds that position until I give in and let him on the couch. We had a 'stand off' because I though he'd give up but he stayed in that position for over 30 minutes. I work full-time so am not home during the day Monday to Friday. However, about 6 months ago my mum moved in with me so now Charlie and Dallas are used to having at least 1 of us home most of the time. (They maybe spend about 6 hours alone twice a week when my mum goes out). Over the past 2 weeks or so Charlie has started peeing inside on an average of once a day. I thought perhaps it was due to the cold as he seems reluctant to go outside when it is chilly except for a walk (despite him having a jumper on!), so have made sure I take him outside for a pee every morning before I go to work. We did that this morning, yet a few hours later my mum called and told me he had peed inside again (he doesn't go in the same spot every time). He did it while she was outside hanging out the washing. This made me realise we have never caught him doing it inside. I know without a doubt it is him as Dallas is 100% trained, plus Charlie is double Dallas' height so when it has been on a wall or side of a bed I know it couldn't be Dallas. Given that we've never caught him, I'm starting to wonder if he only does it when he is alone i.e. as a result of separation anxiety. I don't think there is a medical problem as he is quite healthy. If it is separation anxiety, what can I do to help him? I'm at a complete loss. I don't want to isolate him and make him feel abandoned as I love him to death and it would break my heart to upset him, but I think I do need to do something as it is just getting worse. Both Charlie and Dallas sleep on my bed. I know that's 'wrong' but I let them get away with it. Dallas sleeps down the end of the bed and likes his space. But Charlie has to either have his body against mine or sleep with his head right near mine, staring at me (like in the photo below). Should the first step be to have them sleep on their bed beside my bed? Do I need to take him to a Delta accredited behavioural trainer? I'd be grateful for any advice you can offer.

1 On 1 Training For Walking
allie181 replied to allie181's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
There may be some instances where corrective aids are necessary as a last resort, but I refuse to believe they are necessary for a dog that simply pulls when he is walked but is otherwise perfectly behaved and loves all people and animals. It is not as though he attacks or lunges at anyone when we walk. He does not have an aggressive bone in his body, he simply pulls too much. -

Thanks Alkhe, that's a good idea. I think I will actually do that. -
I adopted a beautiful 3 year old Tibalier a few months ago. He had no training but has picked up sit, drop etc with me. However, I have been unsuccessful training him not to pull on the lead and need some help. Can anyone recommend a good trainer? I'd like to just have a few one on one training sessions rather than a group session. I also do not want to use a trainer that is going to recommend a choker collar or halti - I want a trainer that prefers to use actual training to correct the problem rather than devices. Any recommendations in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne would be greatly appreciated. Allie

Thanks everyone. Off to the bath we go. I'm glad, as I wanted him to be able to sleep in my bedroom with me and my other boy and not feel ostracised on his first night. Thanks again for your help! :D p.s. attached is a pic of my adorable new boy Charlie and both the boys already best buddies and napping together (hogging my couch) ;) UPDATE: We just finished his bath (actually shower ;) ). I combed him carefully afterwards and did not find a single flea or speck of "flea dirt" - woo hoo! Also vacuumed thoroughly, so hopefully that is our first and last flea encounter.
