  1. Yeah he does sound a bit harsh on his OH but all the stuff about the dog is so true haha
  2. This is a great song called 'Like My Dog' by Harley Allen and Scotty Emerick. Funny and cute.
  3. We're staying near brissy this weekend and went to the shops today and I looked in the window of the shopping centre pet shop - they had Maltese x Maltese x shih tzu. Also a sign up saying "important notice- all our puppies are bought from reputable breeders. We do not and will not support puppy farms" Reputable back yard breeders.
  4. I am at the end of my dog training and behaviour course and have started slowly starting up my dog training business. I have lots of dog related goals I am working towards. Also known as a crazy dog lady as most people I know aren't that into it Pretty much all my spare time is spent researching and training at the moment but I have heaps to learn and a long way to go.
  5. Wow this thread is awesome for ideas. Which I need because its also made me realise my dog stuff is a bit disorganised. Currently all their training gear and leads are in a big plastic storage box in the bedroom. Chew treats and monthly wormers are hanging in a soft hanging pocket thing in the pantry, food supplements are sitting on the bench and toys and grooming stuff and some random bits and peices are in the top of the laundry cupboard in a big jumbled mess. Who knows what's there. Soft crates are in the laundry and lounge depending on where I need them. And the huge wire crate is being used inthe lounge for Chester's crate rest currently but when we're not using it I don't quite know where to put it.
  6. I tried to find the report from Mokhas surgery but all I could find were the very large bills. I am not sure of the technical terms for what Mokha had but he had 3 larges pieces of cartilidge that had broken off floating in the joint so they were removed and the surface was scraped or smoothed I think. His surgery was nearly 1 1/2 years ago and he is doing so well. He runs and plays, has cartrophen injections monthly and is on Joint guard and fish oil. I am so pleased we went ahead with the surgery as he would have been completely lame by now if we had not. I hope you have as positive an outcome as we did. We were extremely careful with him, enforcing the rest and took a long time to increase his exercise. It was hard with another young lab in the house who was and is an extremely active girl. Thanks for looking. The scraping and smoothing of the joint sounds similar but I don't think Chester had any major fragments. We are being very strict with him on rest. He's in the crate except to be taken out on lead for toilet breaks. He hated having a bandage on and it had to be changed several times and then we gave up but the vet has checked it yesterday and it's looking ok. Was a little red so they gave him some antibiotics in case. It looks good now though. We have another dog in the house too and she is hyper and they love to play so it does make it hard. At least Chester likes his crate and is used to it since he had to have 4 weeks of rest originally to see if that helped without surgery.
  7. Poor pooch. Sorry you lost your best friend. We never forget them. 9 years since I lost Minnie and I still miss her and think of her. My other dogs I have lost are Tuppence, Penny, and Bob. I've lost too many other animals to list but will never forget any of them and how they shaped my life. Many were lost way too soon, I'll always love them and cherish the memories.
  8. Thanks all. She said that after she gets him vaccinated she will be sticking a sign out the front to sell him. I'm sure he will sell quickly but I hope to a good home and that he didn't get out again in the mean time.
  9. I was mad about it too (and she wanted to prove to me she wasn't irresponsible!) I really wanted to take him, the brown eyes and floppy ears made it that much harder. But with a dog fresh from surgery about to be in the car having to stay calm as well as our other dog and a 6 hour drive home I just couldn't have coped with it. Just had to tell myself he's back where he started and hope she keeps him safe. I did think about him all the way home though, wondering if he'd be ok and what would have happened if I took him. At least he got returned home I guess but I do wish I could have taken him. Then I'd be here stressing over finding him a good home!
  10. It scared me. I thought I was about to witness a puppy being run over
  11. On Wednesday we were driving to pick up Chester from the Specialist vet on the Gold Coast after his elbow surgery. We were driving along Beaudesert-Nerang Road which is 100klm/hr zone and a little brown and white beagle puppy was in the middle of the road! OH quickly pulled over and I got out to see pup running toward the other lane, an oncoming 4WD didn't see him and nearly hit him, only cm's from clipping him. The puppy was in the path of his wheels and then jumped back at the last second. The 4WD passed and another car was coming so I waved it to slow down and it did. Then the road was clear and the pup had run over the other side so I crossed and followed him into a front gate where the poor thing was freaking out and hiding in the bushes. I knealed down and coaxed him. First time he came halfway then ran away again, second time he came to me and I scooped him up. I went down the driveway and asked if it was theirs, the man there said no, next property over. We went into the neighbouring property and found a woman working in the yard. I yelled out "Excuse me, is this your puppy?" She said, "oh he's mine where was he?" I told her what had happened and how he was nearly run over. I mentioned he was so cute and she said, "Oh well you can have him if you want him, I haven't gotten him vaccinated yet so you can have him for free" If it weren't for having a border collie who needs 6 weeks rest to recover from surgery I might have taken him and rehomed him but I just couldn't take on a puppy when I was so concerned over looking after my own dogs at the moment so I had to say no. But the pup seemed like he would need a lot of work too, or he might have just been extra scared over the ordeal. She said, "Oh would you like to see where I keep him so you don't think I am totally irresponsible?" I said ok. She showed us a tiny pen around a kennel. The pup had climbed right out. She then explained how she owned the mum, a beagle and some relative visiting owned the father, a beagle cross unknown. Obviously an accident happened and this was the only pup born. I didn't see the mum anywhere. We had to leave but I still feel like maybe I should have taken him home. I'm so worried he would have escaped onto the road again. I asked her to please make sure he didn't. I can only hope she looked after him and found him a good home. He would have only been about 7 weeks old.
  12. Hi This is what the report says: The xrays showed mild subchondral sclerosis of the left coronoid and mild osteophytosis evident on the dorsum of the anconeal process. Arthroscopic assessment confirmed a loss of articular cartilage of the coronoid region with moderate synovitis. A subtotal coronoidectomy was performed to remove the abnormal joint surface and decompress the medial compartment of the elbow. Is that anything like what mokha had? How did he go after surgery? They were worried Chester was getting it in the right elbow as well as he shifts weight between the two although only limps on the left. The xrays showed the right clear though so really hoping it stays good.
  13. We finally have him home after a long 6 hour drive. He's sleeping in his crate now bit he's been uncomfortable with the bandage being so stiff, makes it hard for him to lay down. It's the start of a long 12 weeks. I feel so bad for him already. Oh and they shaved so much hair off! My poor boy. I really hope it helps him after all this.
  14. Chester had hu surgery yesterday and we are now waiting for the call to pick him up. Hoping we made the right decision for him, poor boy
  15. So sorry for your loss You wrote a beautiful tribute to Bonnie
  16. Hey. Sorry to hear about your pup. Hoping its something else minor. I am going through a similiar thing with my border collie, Chester. He started a very slight limp on his left leg when he was about 6 months old. Its elbow dysplasia. We took him to see a specialist on the Gold Coast and he recommended conservative management as its a mild case. However, Chester is 12 months old now and he is still mild/borderline but we keep him very restricted in how much he can run around. He had a couple of runs last week and it made him way worse so we are going to see the specialist again on Tuesday and he is likely to get the surgery done to remove the possible bone fragment or cartiledge flap between his elbow joint. If you want to talk about it feel free to PM me anytime. I have spent the last 6 months stressing about it so I know what it can be like.
  17. I'm so sorry I always admired her in your sig, she was beautiful.
  18. I have a large wishlist on Amazon, mostly dog books. Not sure whether to just go for it and order them all...
  19. Sorry to hear that you are having a hard time. Dogs definately know. I think we haven't even scratched the surface of what they are capable of with their senses. I have been having a down time lately and my two know when I am down. If I am happy they will come bounding up to me but if I am upset they will gently walk to me and lay beside me. I will never forget my little dog Minnie, a chihuahua we had when I was a teenager. She really knew. One day I was dumped by a guy and huddled up crying. She came up and nudged her way into my arms and just snuggled into me and licked my hand, then just curled up in my lap. She dies two days later on a new years day, by a dog attack and she died in my arms. I still miss her.
  20. We were told the pro dogs are not cross trained for different scents for this very reason. So in this case they would be either a cash detection dog or a drug detection dog. Another example is that they do not cross train for drugs and explosives. If the dog indicates on a bag, how will they know whether to evacuate an entire airport or check the bag for drugs?
  21. awww thats awesome. I would love it if we could be like that. my family thinks mutts are better and healthier dogs. most people I know think that actually.
  22. I don't currently do the canine cough vacc but still not sure whether I should be or not. One vet told me if I don't want to board the dogs in kennels than I can go without. Even though they can get it other places, the kennels ( training clubs often) require it. So I think I will stick to C3 unless I need C5 for one of those reasons. I have been told the canine cough vacc doesn't mean they can't get it but if they do they may fight it off quicker and not get a really bad case of it. Its all very confusing. Every vet having a different opinion doesn't help.
  23. C3 vacc (parvo, distemper, hepatitus) is thought to last 3 or more years. The other two components that make up the C5 vacc are for two strains of canine cough. Those vaccs apparently last only the one year. So you could split it up and have a C3 every 3 years and the 2 canine cough vaccs anually but apparently this costs more and its easier for the public to get one vacc yearly. The diseases that C3 protectes against are the deadly ones and it also protects against them better than the canine cough vaccine protects against canine cough. While Australia mainly vaccinates against these 5 diseases, america vaccinates against 9 and therefore some of them do 3 vaccs the first year, then the next 3 the second year, then the last 3 the third year and therefore vaccinate every 3 years for each disease. And they are also putting more chemicals into their dogs altogether. I got this info from a lecture by a vet on one of my course DVDs. Was just listening to it today. He also said most people decide against the titre test because of the cost and go the annual C5 because of the convenience. I would rather give my dogs the least amount of chemicals possible but still ensure they are protected.
  24. He is just referring to it as medial coronoid disease and be won't know specifics until he does the arthroscopy (whether there is FCP or other type of problem) and then depending what it is, he thinks he will need to do a subtotal coronoidectomy (bit hazy on thy wording). Hope this makes sense. He also refers to it as scoping the joint. His limp is the worst it's ever been now Thanks for your support
