  1. I use one of these http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/40187755#/20187756/
  2. What a sweetheart. I'm so sorry for your loss. They really are the most gentle dogs
  3. Beautiful photos! I love the second one the most
  4. Yea, to be honest we would have been and gone within about 20 minutes if it weren't for meeting up with other DOLers.
  5. I probably wouldn't recommend it to you Jass. The Brisbane one was a bit of a let down
  6. What sort of training are you looking at doing with your pup? Is this just basic puppy class that you are after, or are you looking to continue on with obedience? Also, pics really are necessary :D
  7. Akitas come in quite a few different colours/patterns, so I definitely have a few preferences. I absolutely love red & white Akitas, which is what Kyojin is, and black and white pintos. I must admit, I have no interest in owning a brindle Akita.
  8. If you ever come to Brisbane you are more than welcome to come and cuddle Kyojin. I guarantee you'll want an Akita after that ;)
  9. What most people do is buy a crate that will fit the pup when it's fully grown and then block off any excess space with something like an esky for example. The reason you do this is that if the dog has too much extra space they might toilet in the crate, as there is still enough room for them to lie away from it. So by blocking the crate off, you reduce the likelihood that the pup will toilet in the crate since they won't want to be surrounded by it. That way you can increase how much space the dog has as it grows. I bought the 48" crate for my boy before I got him so that it would last forever. Also, this site is great for crates http://www.topbuy.com.au/tbcart/product/Carries-and-Houses-c161.htm Buying a crate online can be up to 4 times cheaper than in a pet store! Another bit of advice, go for a metal crate not a soft at least while your pup is young as he will most likely chew a soft crate.
  10. Quite a few reasons, and I probably haven't remembered them all but I'll try: Helping with toilet training Providing them with a safe, quiet place for them to get peace and quiet away from the rest of the family when they need a break Confinement when they have an injury or for example they've been desexed and you need to keep them quiet Confining them when you can not be around to supervise them, for their safety as well as to protect your belongings Teaches them routine Gets them used to a crate in case they ever need to travel Etc..
  11. Kyojin had the same issue. His second testicle hadn't come down by the time we got him desexed at 7 months. Other than the risk of cancer, our vet also said that if we were to breed with Kyojin (which we were never considering) it would definitely be passed on. I can't remember how long the vet said is fairly normal to wait for them to drop, but he did say that there was no real rush to desex him.
  12. I have a 48" crate pretty much at the foot of our bed. It sure is huge! We just have two blankets draped over it to keep the light out for Kyojin and to give him some peace and quiet from the cats. We used to have blankets in there and then bought him a bed, but at the moment he doesn't have anything lining his crate since he always kicks everything to the side and lies on the metal anyway.
  13. We just sold our car, so naturally I had to hide all evidence that for the last few months we'd been a bit lazy and had Kyojin in the car without the covers on. I spent quite a few hours going over and over the seats trying to get his hair off. Finally I remembered I had lint rollers for the cats and gave them a go. I got probably 90% of the hair off with the roller and then just had to go back and search for all the strays. It was much, much easier than trying to vacuum all the hairs out once the embed themselves.
  14. I'd agree with Dyzney here. I think a Rottweiler bitch could suit exactly what you're after.
  15. Lol I've met about 4 or 5 and each one of them has been incredibly yappy. Ok, ok, maybe the water around here is different. It sounds like the environments you are seeing the paps in are very stimulating which is why they are barking? Just a thought. I work in obedience and all of the ones I have seen have been quiet. I still think they are great. Maybe some pap breeders would be able to comment. By the way Minxy, I love Akita's they are my favourite all time breed of dog. Yours look magnificent! Thanks! I'm absolutely smitten with the breed now
  16. A lover of most animals, though I couldn't see myself bonding with anything other than a cat or dog. I don't love all dogs though, I'm really quite picky about dogs that I like.
  17. Lol I've met about 4 or 5 and each one of them has been incredibly yappy.
  18. LOL thank you for sharing :D
  19. I haven't used these guys for treatments yet, but have used them for other things and can't recommend them enough. We buy all our pet food from there and each delivery we get a free toy as well which is a lovely bonus http://www.petshops.com.au/catalog/index.php?cPath=21
  20. I only pay about $250 a year with Medibank for the Silver cover (not quite the top as I don't see the need to get yearly vacs covered). $500 excess but that's nothing. Figured I was better off paying such a cheap yearly fee.
  21. We had our boy desexed at Sunnybank Veterinary Clinic. I can't remember exactly how much we paid for Kyojin (35kg or so at the time) but we paid a little bit extra since he had an undescended testicle that they had to go digging for. But it was less than half the price that our regular vet charges. These guys don't charge by weight.
