  1. Oo I liked reading through this thread, I enjoy hearing the stories behind names :) MiniMax, I have to admit, everytime I read a thread and Boston is mentioned I automatically think "oh, a boston terrier" Cherry - came from the shelter with that name, and it suited her Rusty - he was originally called Charlie, but that's the cats name, so it had to change. Originally mum dad and I had agreed on Anzac, but when we picked him up, it just didn't suit. But what really suited him was Bear, but dad wouldn't have a bar of it so I had a sook and came out with a heap of random names and the only one we could all agree on was Rusty. To this day mum and I still wish we had called him Bear  Biscuit - I wanted to call him Anzac, thinking maybe it would suit him, but when I went to school and told everyone what I would be calling my new puppy, one friend said "oh, Anzac Biscuit" and I thought, awww Biscuit would be the cutest name! And it suits him I think, I mean, he's obssessed with food anyway :D
  2. I have 3 and I find it hard to imagine having more that I could truly bond with...as in, I manage to get individual time spent with the 3, and 2 are bonded with me, but I don't know how a fourth would go in bonding with me as well...am interested to hear peoples opinions on this too!
  3. I am so sorry to hear about your wonderful boy thank you for sharing his story, attitude right to the end...what a character. Rest in peace Charlie
  4. . I was half asleep when i read your comment anyway, bit sleep deprived lately I wonder if theres some industrial strength disinfectant you could spray down the furniture/patio with ? one that people with kennels use? Hmm, good idea! I might try and source some and see how we go! Thanks Jules :D BTW, I have been following the puppy thread and all the excitment in the lead up to Miah...and she is just such a sweety, you must be smitten with the little ball of mischief! You just can't not forgive that face
  5. not the outdoor furniture! we don't really have any, so thats not going be issue Oops haha it's meant to say PEEING not BEING  so the patio smells of boy dog pee since he started doing it 2 years ago
  6. Wow, after reading through all this I think I've been very blessed with Rusty and Biscuit  Rusty has never chewed, or dug, or been destructive. And all that Biscuit chewed was a light chord, however we have an ongoing problem with being on outdoor furniture...and that's easily cleaned compared to other destructive behaviours. But miss Cherry was another story
  7. This makes me mad and sad Poor puppies I really don't see what's so great about the blues...give me a red or a brindle anyday :D
  8. I agree with Aussie3...so much variation! My boy a few years ago would probably not do well with young children, especially when he was younger than 3, he was just sooo boisterous! They are bigger boned than borders, and definately love a good body slam! Luckily Biscuit is tough, because he gets bowled over and jumped on quite a lot...but always goes back for more Rusty is fine if I miss a day walking him...but then on other days he happily runs 9km 3 times a week with me. And then one of mums work collegues got an Aussie expecting something like a BC...but ended up with a very lazy dog that could really take or leave exercise  I have also noticed Aussies seem to have more of a "what's in it for me" attitude than BC's...the dogs I have met, BC's just live to please. However I've noticed that unless Rusty gets something out of it...wether it be a positive tone of voice, food, or a pat...he's not gonna do it, especially if you talk in a way to "belittle" him, he'll give you the finger and walk off, or just give me the saddest puppy dog eyes
  9. A couple of years ago there was a "working dog" series of stamps. Had an ACD with cattle, a BC with sheep, a GSD police dog, a guide dog lab, and an AQIS beagle...I remember because someone bought them for me and I still have them stuck to the side of my photo board in my room  But I do think these doggies are very cute :)
  10. Poor kids...why not put some effort into training them? Wait, ain't nobody got time fo' that!
  11. Roo is SO beautiful! Reminds me so much of my previous girl, Lassie...such a doll Roo
  12. This is all so interesting! This thread just gave me the idea to google search a Schipperke pedigree database and have found the Bonchien Pedigree Pages, and I have been looking through at Biscuit's lines from many, many years ago...so cool!
  13. Have read this thread everyday...so happy to hear how much Roo is progressing, thanks to the her very dedicated "mum" and the very generous Nekhbet I have found this hugely inspirational, and I can't wait to keep following and see how far Roo comes :D Thanks for sharing the information too Nekhbet, it is all very interesting to me :)
  14. Thanks so much for the replies everyone :D Have been taking Cherry out on her normal walks now...either 4.5km around the block, or a 2km hike, and she's so happy! She is leaner and fitter than she's ever been too. So I might let her do games now and then, as she does still really enjoy it, but doesn't really live for it. Tassie, Cherry is also on the smaller side, 450mm and 15kg. Biscuit gets the chiropractor in every now and then, so I'll have to get her to do a treatment for Cherry as well if I can afford it :) Ness, that's where I've definately gone wrong; retiring her from life. But not anymore! CFS, wow, 16, she's doing great!! And to retire at 13, especially for a large breed, that's excellent. I now understand about keeping active to keep younger - I always say that's what I want to be like when I'm old...and after reading this article, I'm like...why not do the same for Cherry? Thanks again everyone, I am finding this all very interesting, and still working on forming my own opinion on the matter
  15. Hi everyone, just read this article and found it very interesting: http://silvia.trkman.net/agilityisgood.htm Would love to hear everyone's thoughts/opinions on the retirment age for agility dogs; my first ever dog is now 12 (well, in a few days!) and even though she's not slowed down a huge amount, I have decided to retire her from the competition ring, and have cut back on her walks and everything. But after reading this article I'm not sure it's the right thing to do? Sorry, paranoid doggy mum here :D
  16. Wow, what a beautiful looking dog! Looks like I'm another Balto fan, he's got me intrigued as well, I'm off to google the tamasakan
  17. Aw he is just adorable!! And some lovely shots of him you got, he really does have some lovely expressions
  18. Hi everyone After getting back into training last night, I have realised that both of my dogs' weavepole performances need improved  I need to get them doing better entries...for example, they will only enter the pole closest to me, so if I was ahead of the first pole, say 4 poles in, they would enter the 3rd or 4th pole. Any suggestions or reccommended youtube videos I could watch on methods/techniques to improve this? :)
  19. Have pm'd you :) Cavs are great little dogs too...our friends just got their first family dog about a year ago, a little cav, with kids 2 and 5, and he's great with thim. Can be great little obedience/agility dogs too as Gretel mentioned
  20. Schipperke :D Sturdy little dogs, so great with kids, don't mind any rough and tumble play! And awesome little agility or obedience dogs. Biscuit picks things up so fast, and schips are sooo food motivated making them easy to train. They'll take any exercise you can throw at them...or none at all, just a play in the yard if you can't get out. My only concern would be I'm not sure how they'd be in a family situation as I don't have a big family  It's just me and my parents, and because they are very much one person dogs, Biscuit has attached himself to me and really isn't bothered by anyone else. But other schip people might have better insight in that regard :)
  21. I've going no advice in regards to the pigment, but he is just super adorable!
  22. Jellybush this sounds so hard for both you and Roo, and I can't even begin to imagine the pain you are going through trying to make the best decision for her. As others have said, whatever you decide, you have gone above and beyond for your girl and done a heck of a lot more than many other people would
  23. Happy birthday Fergus, he sounds like such a wonderful boy and is super cute too!
