  1. Is there a website? GayleK, maybe you could try and pm collies02 as that is who JulesP said is involved with that food (hollistic one in 20kg white bag). I can get it from a lady at the local markets (might even be collies02 as she told me she has dogs with long coats, is a breeder and she also is a groomer) in Seymour and she has told me that she travels to a different market every weekend with her stall. (dog treats, beds, rugs etc) I think the markets are on here in a week or 2 and will get the details when I see her and post them for anyone that is interested.
  2. If he is doing well on Advance then I would keep giving it to him. Don't fix what ain't broke As for as how long to keep feeding him puppy food I would ask his breeder or go to the bulldog forum and find out what they reccommend.
  3. Yes! I used to work for a country vet and we often used my dogs for blood donation. One time I took my Dobermann in to donate and after it was spun the vet commented to me that his blood was very fatty. The worst that he had seen! My dog was not suffering from any illness at the time (that we knew of) and was a very fit and healthy dog of 6 years of age. Vet just put it down to one of those things? Hope your boy is ok
  4. I'm sure there will be some out there that will disagree and say it's all to do with how they are raised, BUT I have had Bull Terriers in the past and they both were cat killers. My female killed 5 cats and while the male didn't actually 'kill' any cats, he definately got involved in the chasing and attacking part! They would never do it while I was around, only when nobody was in the yard with them. My own cats could lay with them and rub against them while we were there and she would all but ignore them but if a cat went into the yard while no-one was there, it was dead. Both dogs were raised from pups around cats and this developed when the female was around 12 months old. I have had other bully owners tell similar stories. ETA - I am not bully bashing, I LOVE the breed. They are beautiful dogs and have many wonderful traits, small animals are just not one of their strong points! Although I have known a 'few' that were fine with cats and such, but they were older dogs - they tend to 'mellow' as they age.
  5. Thanks jacqui835, that was very interesting. And thanks to everyone else that replied. All of my other dogs are desexed so there is no issue with having him remain entire in this household (no chance of 'accidental' matings). If we have any issues arise I might try the implant and see if that makes any difference before surgical castration, otherwise I'm happy for him to stay as nature intended. OH breathed a big sigh of relief and is grateful to DOLers for their imput!
  6. I have seen that one. I think the meat ingredient is lamb, so good for dogs with a chicken allergy, got lots of good stuff in it. Kibble is very small so easy for puppies and small dogs to eat and cheaper than the 'premium' foods. (about $80 for 20kgs)
  7. If you find something let me know! I won't buy Innova because of the company that sells it atm. If it was available through other stores I would put my dogs back on it in a second! There are some other kibbles out there that are similar but I don't know as much about them and they are also imported. Contact Innova via their website to ask if the food is irradiated.
  8. Turn the bags over and read the ingredients list on them. They generally have all the same ingredients just sometimes in a different order. ALOT of the so called PREMIUM products are full of corn, beet pulp and other nasty, not necessary ingredients. There are only a few available IMO that are genuinely worth paying top dollar for. You may as well save yourself some money and get a bag of the cheaper stuff.
  9. Thanks dyzney, I have been following another thread on on the Suprelorin implant and it might be something to consider if we decide we want him desexed. Kind of 'try before you buy'! I guess even though I don't think all males need to be desexed I kind of bent under the pressure of family telling me I should get him desexed and also pressure from the trainer at the puppy pre-school we attended. In all honesty we probably wont get him done now unless it is for medical reasons as I've decided to stick with what has worked for me in the past and to hell with everyone else!
  10. I agree with both of the above posts. I have never previously desexed any of my male dogs in the past and am not particularly keen this time but thought it might help prevent some issues. He is not my only dog, I have 5 , all other dogs in the household are desexed (2 female and 2 male). The other 2 male dogs were desexed because at the time I had an entire JRT bitch (still do but she is desexed now) and didn't want any 'accidents' (both of them are cross breeds). I understand that desexing alone won't automatically make him a well adjusted, well behaved dog, I just wanted to know from a growth perspective if in others experiences that it would affect him. I will also state that he is not an aggressive dog and I would not be desexing him to 'fix' a problem, but maybe to try and prevent one from occuring. (Along with training etc). At this stage, I have to say that I am rethinking the whole desexing thing. I might just have to work extra hard with training to make sure that DA is not an issue we will have to deal with .
  11. Thanks everyone, good to get others opinions. I am aware that desexing him won't make or break him in his ability to get on with other dogs but going by my past experience no matter how well the dog is 'trained' testosterone can make it a whole lot more difficult. eg. my old dobe and an entire male rotti that went to the same obedience club used to be able to do drop, stays so close to each other they were touching and they also competed on the same flyball team for years and while they were focused on the exercise there were no problems but if we happened to be chatting casually we had to be on high alert to make sure they didn't lunge at each other. There was also an issue with a entire SBT at the same club and he was trialling at a high level in obedience. All neutered males and any bitches (speyed or not) he was fine with. Edited to add that we are holding off on the desexing until he is at least 12 months old
  12. I have a Dobermann pup (5 months old) and have booked him in to be neutered on Monday. My OH dosn't want to get him done and keeps coming up with excuses why I should wait. Most of them make no sense (This is his first male dog so I think he is 'identifying' with him a bit too much!), however he asked me yesterday if having him neutered now will affect his growth and development? My last Dobermann was not neutered and although he was a very obedient dog he definately developed a 'dislike' of other entire males. I want to avoid this if I can, hence why I want to get it done now but I don't want to 'stunt' his growth (not the best way to put it but you get my drift?) Anyway, I just wanted some opinions from others in regards to this. What has been your past experience with this?
  13. Thanks guys, I'm really looking forward to it. I'm new to the state as well as the forum so I don't really know anyone that has dogs that can help me socialise him. Am looking into obedience clubs but it's hard to find any that are not too far from here (Puckapunyal).
  14. I'm a newbie and have never been before but would love to come this time. A few questions:1) Are husbands and kids welcome too? (mine will whinge if I tell them to stay at home!) 2) My boy has not been around dogs other than mine much and he does bark when he can see other dogs, he has NOT shown aggression when he has happened to meet some others it just seems like he is not that sure how to react to them (he is 5 month old dobermann). I don't want to upset anyone there but think that this would be a great opportunity for him to meet other dogs and learn to behave appropriately around them. If he was causing any problems I would of course remove him. Doggies: pip1981- Dakota, maybe Tika Lappiemum - Boof, Tasha and Sohvi Kirst_goldens and John luna's owner - Luna the Leo Hannah - no dogs this time Groupfive - Flash OR Rain Pointees - April, Alexis and Shaun Lucycharzie - Charlotte and maybe Rupie Rottisliebe - 4 Rotties, not sure which ones though? dobesrock - Acheron Who's Bringing What: pip1981- marinated chicken wings, cake, plates, cutlery, cups, condiments, etc. Lappiemum - Kebabs, sausages, plates, cups, cutlery, BBQ cooking stuff and sauces Kirst_goldens - Chippies and some soft drink pls advise any fav flavours Hannah - ceasar salad Daisy - Dip and crackers Pointees - Fairy bread and pigs ears Lucycharzie - Extra $5 Rottisliebe - not sure? 15. I am beyond words to describe my frustration at the moment so I can only imagine what those of you close to this are feeling. I want to go to the council offices and hit these mororns over the head! Don't they realise what incompetent idiots they are showing themselves to be? It's just beyond belief. If there is anything I can do to help please let me know as this is driving me crazy. In a previous post something was mentioned about going to the media. Did this happen? Not a fan of ACA but it's amazing how many councils back down once a story hits the tv screens.
  16. I was curious to know how the little dogs go on UA or GB, I had some samples sent out to me not long ago. My boy is still a puppy and only 5kg, so he had trouble with the kibble size, but I'm hoping once he is fully gorwn he will manage well, as it seems like a great food. How big are your little guys? My smallest dog is 3.5kg. He is a JRTx. He is over 2 years old and fully grown and has no problems eating UA. My other 2 littlies are approx 5-6kgs and they also have no probs getting it down, but again they are adult dogs with adult teeth so that would make it easier for them. I'm sure as your pups gets bigger and gets his adult teeths in it will be alot easier for him to chew the kibble. Can't remember cause I threw the bag out, but I thought it said on the back of the UA bag that for puppies you could wet the food with water or milk (lactose free) to make it easier for them.
  17. I have fed Natures Gift in the past (I now have 5 dogs and it dosn't come in big enough bags) and am currently feeding a mainly raw diet with Uncle Albers added. I found both to be good products and alot more affordable than the so called 'premium' dog foods. All of my dogs are doing really well on it and seem to enjoy it, although my little dogs did seem to prefer Natures Gift.
  18. Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you but I do have a similar problem. My 5 month old pup will happily sleep through the night also (he sleeps on a mat next to my side of the bed) and he usually wakes at about 6.30am too. He gets let outside to go toilet and will happily go back to sleep AS LONG as it's on the bed with me! There is no way he will settle for staying on his mat once he has woken up in the morning. I try and ignore him but he keeps pacing around the bed whining and putting his paws on the mattress. During the week this is not such a problem as hubby is usually up and going to work so I let him up so I can get some more sleep, but on weekends it creates 'issues' because OH says he is too big to be on the bed (he is a Dobermann) and he takes all the blankets! My other dogs will stay asleep until I make them get up, whatever time that is! I'm hoping that in time he will also be happy sleeping longer and not feel the need to wake so early.
  19. ;) I'd go to that meeting! Although it would probably be a frustrating place to be what with all the backtracking and buck passing that will happen there. What a bunch of clueless idiots these people are. I really hope that the dogs get to go home soon.
  20. Many years ago a friend of mine lost her adult SBT to drowning in her pool. The dog could swim fine but he must not have been able to find a way out of it and they were not home at the time. Very, very sad. Agree that it would be best not to let the pup outside unsupervised until you are certain that she cannot get in to the pool.
  21. Is there any reason that the dogs are not neutured or going to be? I know it won't solve all problems but it could help stop any male dominance issues with the new pup befor ethey even begin.
  22. Agree with Sir Walter, So many people don't deserve to own any kind of dog. Tell her to get one of those robot dogs, that way when she has had enough of it she can turn it off and put it in the cupboard!
  23. JulesP I'm glad the dog is fine I am new to this forum (and forums in general) and have noticed that people really do jump (or take HUGE leaps) to conclusions about other peoples posts. One of my first posts was asking for advice on training clubs and talking about the type of dog I have and his breeding and size and I later noticed that a DOLer had started a new topic called "What really S#*ts me" about my post. They assumed I was saying that my dog was better/bigger because of his lines. This was not the case at all and I very nearly left the forum altogether because I didn't come here to have peopel get the #*$% with me because they misunderstand what I wrote! I really enjoy reading the posts and seeing everyones POV and hopefully I'll get a bit braver and post more! BTW I used to be a vet nurse and if my dog was limping, but otherwise seemed ok I would give it some time before taking it to the vet. I would be keeping it quiet and not letting it run around or play.
  24. OH would keep them, however I do worry about that because I definately spend alot more time with them than he does and I am alpha in this house. Not sure how they would cope. Would possibly ask my sister to take 1 or 2 of them (we have 5) cause I know she would love them and look after them as well as me.
