  1. Not wanting to appear stupid, but who/what is Clifford? I am new to DOL and although have never really been a fan of the RSPCA I am still learning about the depths to which they have sunk.
  2. My DA dog is very sweet and loving (with people) and usually very obedient but when she gets it in her head that she wants to attack there is no stopping her. I have had to lay on top of her on a sidewalk to stop her from chasing after a lady carrying a dog that she had just picked up and shook (the other dog was off lead and ignored it's owners calls to come). It's like she gets tunnel vision and nothing else matters. Even if wearing a muzzle it would still be very traumatic for the dog that gets attacked and no guarantee that it wouldn't get hurt and I don't want to put my dog in a postion that sets her up to fail.
  3. I like Kovu too. Sounds a bit exotic and I'm not keen on giving dogs 'people' names.
  4. a couple of my dogs do the same thing! Although they often wait until I've just put the shovel down thinking that I'm done and hey presto! another surprise for me
  5. When I was 18 I brought my first dog (since leaving home) a Dobermann. He was $200 from a BYB as I couldn't afford to pay for a registered dog. Definately the best $200 I ever spent. No health problems, no behavioural problems and he was a stunning looking dog. I realise though that I was extremely lucky with him and wouldn't do that again. My new Dobe is from a registered breeder, who wouldn't even tell me the price of the pup until we had been chatting for about an hour and he had decided that I was an acceptable candidate to own this puppy!
  6. I hate computers , and yes I think Odie is an awesome little dog too. He is my little ADHD dog! Did I mention that he has a heart murmur? and the vet said (when first noticed as a pup) that he will get tired and run out of energy quickly! So much for that!
  7. Boxer05 - I also feed half kibble, half raw. I was using Uncle Albers and was not unhappy with it but I noted that my Dobermanns coat lost some of it's shine and that all my dogs were 'producing' more for me to clean up in the back yard! I have now switched to Black Hawk Hollistic and there has been an improvement in both coat condition and less of what comes out the back end. I have posted the email of the lady I buy it off or you can google Black Hawk dog food and it's the first site on the list. Sheridan - There were 2 links put on this thread, the one I use is Black Hawk and the other I think was Natural Balance. It must have been the Natural Balance that you looked at as it contains the corn and tallow etc.
  8. I have a dog that is DA. I do not and would not take her to a leash free park, with or without a muzzle. I think there are alot of dogs at these parks that shouldn't be there. Once we were at a fenced leash free park in Sydney and as my kids went through the gate a greyhound ran out. The dog ignored it's owners call and was running around like a chook with no head! Thankfully it came to me and I grabbed hold of it and when the owner came to get it I got an earful about how it was a $10 000 dog and my kids shouldn't have opened the gate while he was in there.
  9. Photos are great! Poor Acheron looks so worried in all of them! He was exhausted from keeping an eye on the other dogs and slept the whole way home. However, Odie went and got his kong for us to throw for him as soon as we got home! I think he runs on Energisers.
  10. No corn? What then is corn gluten meal? And tallow? Following is the ingredients list off the website for the food I feed my dogs. Maybe I'm having eye problems but I still can't see corn (gluten meal or otherwise) or tallow? 11. There are some great photos there! Gee that Odie dog is very photogenic! Thanks so much for a great day, it was so good to meet you all and Acheron and Odie had a blast (well Acheron started to near the end)! We will definately be coming to Kepala next month.
  12. We were living in a rental a few years ago and had new neighbours move in on one side. They had a young GSD that barked all the time and they never tried to stop it. I think they were frightened of the dog as it was quite aggressive and would even have a 'go' at them! We let them know in a friendly way that the dog was barking alot and made some suggestions re what to do about it but it fell on deaf ears. Eventually, after months of complaints, the dog was declared a nuisence dog (sp) by the council and if any complaints were made they would recieve a fine. That made them try to stop it for a couple of weeks but it didn't change anything in the long run because the dog still barked all the time and they just refused to pay the fines. In the end though they moved, I think they got sick of everyone calling the council re the dog and police re them! Hopefully your neighbours are not as bad as these ones were and just having a friendly chat will do the trick.
  13. The Black Hawk Holistic is the one I've just brought and so far so good. All of my dogs love it and not too much of it coming out the other end! I have 5 dogs so also don't want to be spending $130 for 15kg of dog food.
  14. Illusionzzz email this lady. I have recently brought a bag of this food and it's fantastic! No corn or wheat, and it is a high quality hollistic food, made in Australia and reasonably priced. Kaye Reeves: [email protected] She will be able to give you all the details you need and where you can purchase it from.
  15. Isn't it a joy! :p I used to joke that I didn't sleep for years after my kids were born (not that funny back then) and now they are getting close to being teenagers it is even harder! Give me a dog anyday. (I REALLY do love my kids)
  16. There are some lovely stories here, but IME there is NOTHING that can prepare you for the emotional, hormonal rollercoaster that is having a baby. I admit, we call ourselves 'mummy and daddy' when talking to our dogs and there may be some aspects of having a dog/puppy that might be similar to having a child or toddler but they are nothing compared to having a human baby. I've never met anyone that suffered from serious post puppy depression!
  17. Kids and husband seem to raise my stress levels. I find myself sitting outside with the dogs when I need to relax and calm down!
  18. I wasn't refering to all pet shops, just the company with which I have had experience and IMO the sourcing and selling of puppies/kittens, the lack of staff training and support are only a couple of a myriad of problems within it.
  19. Plus 1 more dog for me. He's a little pocket rocket (he weighs 3.5kg) and needs the excercise! 20. Children are SO much harder! Like apples and oranges. Having a puppy does NOT prepare you in any way for having a baby. I've had dogs all my life and I have 2 children and I can tell you now that I will have more dogs in the future but will not be having more kids! I will add that I LOVE my kids ( I just read what I've written and it dosn't sound like it!), but raising them is the hardest thing I will ever do.
  21. As far as I know there is no 'training' for staff in regards to 'breed' specifics. ie, most staff wouldn't have a clue. Anyway the point is to sell the kitten/puppy not to tell the prospective owner that it might be hard work!
  22. arghhhhhhhhhh Thanks for the update. Will keep checking and hoping for good news soon. ;)
  23. 'They' don't care if it's wrong or right 'they' care about making money! I once worked for a well known pet shop chain ( the store I worked at didn't sell live animals at the time) and IMO all that mattered was $$$$$.
  24. Unfortunately I don't have any advise on how to fix this but I will be following this with interest as we have 5 dogs and will be moving to NT in a couple of months and the coucil up there has a 2 dogs per property rule too. I can apply to have more than that but I don't like my chances of it being approved. My dogs are well behaved and are not problem barkers and I've never previously had any complaints from neighbours but I still think it's going to be a battle for us At a previous address I didn't tell council that I had that many dogs. They never found out as no-one complained. Just tell them you got rid of one as it sounds unlikely that anyone is going to see or hear the oldest dog anyway.
  25. My 2 JRTs will snuggle up to each other but only if it's cold, they also snuggle up to the cats! My MaltxShi and Ridgebeck X amstaff won't cuddle with any animals only humans, and my Dobermann pup will snuggle with anything that will let him!
