  1. Hahahahaha One day I arrived home a little late to find the kids at the door yelling out to me that 'Odie and Flash were stuck together' (Odie is a desexed male). I was also then told 'don't worry mum, I pulled them apart' Poor little Odie had his 'lipstick' out and it wouldn't go back in. Upon closer inspection I could see that the skin around it had folded in on itself and it had gotten all dry. So I had to hold him and bit by bit unfold the skin until it could go back in! I did tell the kids not to pull them apart if it ever happened again, they had no idea that it was not the right thing to do. (never has, Flash was desexed not long after)
  2. Yeah, me too! I would guess that it is for the same reasons that naive people will pay $2-3000 for a 'rare' blue or blue fawn staffy. From what I understand the idea behind the creation of the Aussie Bulldog was to try and create a bulldog without the health issues (mainly related to breathing and whelping difficulties) of the British Bulldog. If it is a success then shouldn't they be whelping with ease by now and therefore nowhere near as expensive to breed as the British so shouldn't the price of these puppies then be reduced?
  3. I am not a breeder, I have never co-owned a dog and I have never purchased a puppy on a breeder contract. Despite my lack of experience in these matters I also think that you got the raw end of the deal. The breeder definately gets the best of this deal by a long shot. Not only did you have to pay for the puppy (that is not in your name), you now have to feed and house it and provide veterinary treatment for it. All the while the breeder gets full use of the dog for stud and then also wants you to pay (albiet half price or a discounted rate) for a puppy that is sired by your (kind of) dog. I followed the other thread and all I saw was people offering you their advise based on the many years of experience that they have had. You didn't like what they were saying and you wanted the puppy badly enough to chose to ignore good advise and go ahead with it. And now you are having a go at people who genuinely care about the welfare of this puppy. Do some research about large breed dogs and their excersize requirements. It doesn't seem like much to us but a walk around the block is HUGE for a 8 week old puppy. Especially if it takes 40 minutes! I truly hope that it all works out well for you and the puppy, but you need to understand that people are not always going to tell you what you want to hear. There is some great advise and help on this site if you choose to use it, but if all you are after is for everyone to agree with you then you definately won't like it here!
  4. Hi and welcome to DOL. I think that it doesn't matter what age your kids are, it just depends on how much work you are willing to put in. I got a Dobermann pup when I was 8 months pregnant with my first child. Lot's of people thought I was crazy, but I knew that it would require some hard work on my behalf and I was willing to do it. I don't think it's for everyone however, and it also depends on how much you know about the breed and their requirements. I also had alot of experience with Dobermann's and dogs in general, having grown up with them myself from an early age. Labs are lovely dogs and do make great pets, however, I think alot of people make the mistake of thinking that they are all really friendly and well behaved from the start and then don't do any kind of training with them and end up with a large, uncontrollable dog that you can't let the kids near because it jumps all over them. I'd say go for it as long as you do the research and are prepared to put in the effort.
  5. I don't think Odie minds being stalked. That's kind of what he is hoping for! He likes having what everyone else wants. Great pics everyone, Acheron looks alot more relaxed this time. If only you could all see him at home, such a different dog. Very (over) confident and playful. He does want to approach other dogs but only if it's one on one. When there is a group like that it freaks him out a little. At least he was better than last time and hopefully will be better again next time.
  6. Whats the weather like closer to Melbourne today? I live over an hour away and it's not great here. Is it raining there?
  7. When I used to do flyball we used the Sydney Royal as one of our comps. We had clubs from Vic (I lived in NSW at the time) travel up to compete. I would assume that a flyball comp at any Royal Show would draw clubs from all over the place.
  8. Pets Paradise There are of course many varieties of names that you will see while on DOL in reference to that particular chain of stores but usually it's referred to as PP.
  9. Have to say that if it was one of my dogs that was being attacked by another dog then I would do whatever necessary to get the attacking dog off mine. Kicking, punching and if it came down to it I could/would kill it. Having said that I have a DA dog and on the one occasion that she physically attacked and grabbed another dog I layed into her with fists and feet to stop her from killing this dog. If someone hurt her while trying to save thier own dog that to me is completely understandable and acceptable.
  10. Agree with Wizzle - My parents are well off and we were always a very dog orientated family. We had purebred and cross bred dogs when I was growing up (always from BYB). So many people (like my family) think that a registered purebred dog is only for those that want to show/breed dogs. So many of these people think that the difference between a registered purebred and a purebred from a BYB is the papers. Why pay X amount of extra $ just for a piece of paper? There is also the perception that breeders are snobby, bitchy and strange people that are obsessed with their dogs. There have been some documentaries that have only confirmed that to the general public. We know that not all breeders are like this, but how does Joe Public, with no idea where or how to get more info, find this out for himself? There definately needs to be more public education on the benefits of owning a well bred, registered dog and how to find the info and breeders to do this successfully.
  11. I hate it when people assume that any dog that is DA will automatically be HA as well. I have a DA dog and she is the one I trust the most with people and kids! She HATES other dogs, she LOVES people. When I tell people she is DA they always say 'oh, you need to be careful of her with your kids then'. That woman with the puppy is a moron. She obviously has done no research into dogs at all and shouldn't own ANY kind of dog if she thinks that only certain breeds are aggressive. This is my DA dog. Look how 'aggressive' she is with my youngest daughter!
  12. Greenies look, feel and smell like plastic. Yuck. And they're really expensive too, why bother when you can get a natural product for a fraction of the price and it's 100 times better for the dog?
  13. I am going to try and come. Depends on OH and if he has to work or not, as we will have to drive and I have never been to Melbourne and have no idea where to park or even how to get there! Are most people bring their dogs? I would have to bring my dobe pup. I try not to leave him alone for too long if I can help it or he gets destructive!
  14. Both of mine are vaccinated and I'm pretty sure that most/all of the other DOLers that will be there vaccinate their dogs too.
  15. I will probably have my kids with me. I have 2 girls, aged 9 and 11. They would love to have other kids to play with as they too get a bored with doggy stuff :D
  16. You should definately come JB. This will be only the 2nd time for me but it was so much fun and the dogs really love it. (Well 1 of mine was a big sook and spent most of the day hiding behind me and squealing when the other dogs approached him, but I'm hoping he will be more 'outgoing' this time around!) All you have to bring is a small contribution for lunch. We each bring a little (or alot) something and then share lunch together. Hope to see you there. :D
  17. Before moving to VIC I was doing some part-time grooming for a popular and busy shop on the mid north coast of NSW. Lot's and lot's of 'oodles' there. The owners of these dogs can be VERY aggressive if you mention that their pride and joy is a cross bred. One MUST at all times refer to them as the 'oodle' that they are. The breeders of these oodles have the general public convinced that these crosses are superior to purebred dogs for many reasons and the ignoramous's that buy them believe every word of it. I have a JRT bitch and she was at work with me one day and a client came in and wanted to know if I would like to use their male to breed with her. He was a sweet, friendly dog and they loved him and that's all they thought was important. Another staff member was (still is) a registered breeder (different breed) and she looked over their male and told them that he had a undershot jaw and should never be bred from. Well, they were seriously unimpressed with her! They just couldn't understand why the undershot jaw should stop them from breeding with him. Someone (was it Don B?) has made all the ignorant people out there think that when you cross breed dogs that you will get only the best from both breeds. (Apparently all the 'undesirable' traits vanish when 2 breeds are crossed) Unfortunately lot's of people believe this crap.
  18. Hahahaha - that was karma getting you for saying that you don't really like Dobes in that other thread!
  19. No I won't get over it and yes it is insensitive and I will throw as many tanties as I want to!!! Hmmm, fair enough. Are there any other poodle or lab owners out there who think what I said was terribly insensitive, and that I should never admit to not liking the way any breed looks? I don't think what you said was at all offensive. I used to have Bull Terriers and the amount of times that I was told that they were 'the ugliest dogs' and asked 'why would you want a dog like that?' was unreal. I didn't care because to me they were/are beautiful dogs and I loved them. There are alot of breeds out there that I don't find appealing, however each to their own and all that. Personally I don't understand why everyone doesn't own a Dobermann, cause they are the most beautiful breed after all.
  20. Just talking about this with OH. I would make sure my kids were taken to safety but there is no way I could leave my dogs. We have discussed this in regards to bushfires etc and I have always said that if we go the dogs go with us, no matter how squished it would be with the 4 of us and 5 dogs in the car!
  21. My Dobe is entire, but he is only 6 months old. Don't know if that will make a difference to your boy or not?
  22. send an inquiry to this email - [email protected] They should get back to you about how and where you can get it from.
  23. Hey spitzbaby, as long as your pup has had his vaccinations it should be fine. One of the dogs I bring is only 3.5kg and he copes really well. All of the dogs that were there last time I went were all really friendly and social. There were a few puppies there as well.
  24. I think that's a rude and insulting post derRottweiler - not to mention completely without basis. I used to run a house cleaning business and some of the cleanest homes I worked in had dogs inside. On the other hand I have experienced many a slovenly unhygienic home where the unfortunate family dog is tied up outside in a mud pit looking filthy. But those are both generalisations, just like your comment - and ultimately mean nothing because how people are about cleanliness has little to do with owning pets. Fact is, people will be unhygienic and untidy in their homes whether or not there's a dog inside. And many people who do have dogs inside, myself included, are actually even more vigilant about cleanliness and hygeine because the dogs are there. What else do you mean by "not big on hygiene"???? Dog owners don't wash themselves? Have bad teeth???? Wear the same clothes for weeks on end? Seriously - what sort of comment is that to make? I wouldn't leave my dogs outside. They are sociable animals and want to protect me. They can't do that if they're stuck outside (especialy if they're tied up or in a dog run) As a matter of fact, I wouldn't be here today ranting on this forum if I had kept my previous dalmatian outside. Good post spottychick - my house is also very clean and tidy. A few months ago OH and the kids were away at the same time for a few weeks and the house stayed cleaner for longer even though I allowed my 4 dogs and 2 cats full access to the house. My animals don't toilet in the house, they get fed outside and apart from pet hair and the occasional dirty footprint they don't make any mess at all. They get fresh bones that get eaten within an hour of getting them (if there is any left over they get chucked in the bin the same day), they are wormed, vaccinated and they don't spend much time with unknown dogs or animals. While I certainly wouldn't let them lick at a wound constantly, if they happened to give a small graze or cut a couple of licks it wouldn't bother me at all.
  25. Don't know this lady so can't be sure but maybe she meant that if your (little) dogs told of (by snapping at) her big dog that her dog wouldn't react aggressively? Not the smartest thing I know, but sometimes getting 'told off' by other dogs might help teach another dog some manners and when to back off and leave them alone? My JRT bitch was at the beach once and was snapped at by a kelpie. The owner of the kelpie was upset and telling her dog off for doing it but I said don't worry about it my JRT was asking for it. She kept chasing the kelpie and barking at it and wouldn't come back to me when I called her so It was to be expected that this dog would eventually get the shits and snap at mine. I will add before I get flamed that the JRT is no longer allowed off lead while there are other dogs around.
