  1. I was not aware of these laws. Are they in all states or just there? I remember talking to a council ranger once and he explained that if a dog was on a ute or in a car and it bit a passerby it would not be considered the dogs fault as the vehicle and a certain amount of surrounding space is considered private property. I have 3 small dogs that would yap and run at the fence if a dog was passing close by, but our fence comes off the side of the house and therefore is well into our private property so if a dog came to my fence and was bitten who would be considered at fault? I would think that the other dog (or their owner, for being silly enough to walk so close to my fence) would be a fault because it came onto my property?
  2. I doubt dogs with excess flesh, flat large feet, straight stifles, dumpy front ends, bulldog fronts, large drop ears, narrow little underjaws, with narrow rows of incissors and short inverted canines, over done or over boned would be fit for purpose and go a round. I'm no SBT expert but I agree with the above. Every one I have seen is hugely oversized and just doesn't look like a proper SBT. Unfortunately, I have relatives (by marriage, don't hold it against me!) that have jumped on the Blue and Blue Fawn bandwagon and have been breeding them for a few years now. They are registered breeders and I have heard them talk about how good their males bloodlines are and also brag about the breeding and type of the recent stud they used over one of their bitches (had his pic on FB and he was a huge blue fawn dog). Thank doG that she didn't end up pregnant. They also sell these pups for a small fortune (more than twice what you could buy a good SBT from a good breeder). I have no doubt in my mind that they are in it for the money and I no longer join any conversation about dogs that they are in as it always ends up with some clueless person commenting at how beautiful their dogs are and then I really struggle to contain my opinion and end up frustrated and cranky.
  3. You could call her 'Chicken' - as in hot and spicy chicken!
  4. PF I'm not fussed on Aloveen either. Agree that i costs alot and doesn't do anything better than a cheaper shampoo would do. I have also used Plush puppy and Fidos and both were ok. I have recently started using Aristopet Flea & Tick Shampoo. It's fairly cheap, soap free and I got it because the dogs started getting ticks on them and Frontline/Advantix doesn't seem to work for me. So far am very happy with it. My guys get washed weekly as they are inside alot and it hasn't dried out their coats and there is a variety of coats here! I have 2 JRT's (1 is X Chi), a Maltese X Shih Tzu, Amstaff X and a Dobermann. Oh, and haven't seen a tick since we started using it!
  5. I agree that the spray works better than the spot ons, however I have seen with my very own eyes Frontline put on a dog with fleas and minutes, hours and days later the fleas still crawling around happily non the worse for wear. Over the years I have heard many hundreds of complaints about the product from many different people including vets and other professionals in the pet industry. I once worked for a lady (as a groomer) and she swore by the stuff, used to sell and promote it to customers like nobodys business and used it on her own dogs as regular as clockwork. Her dogs always seemed to have fleas though?
  6. In my experience (have worked as a vet nurse, managed a pet shop and been a dog groomer so have spoken to ALOT of people over the years) the general opinion is that Frontline doesn't work very well at all. The only people that have recommended it have been vets that don't know me and are trying to get me to buy it. Fortunately for me we haven't had a problem with fleas in over 5 years. I do not use any of those kind of products on my pets with any kind of regularity. In the first week of living here in Darwin I was pulling ticks (not paralysis) off my dogs daily. Three had been treated with Frontline and 2 with Advantix (just what I had in the cupboard). I purchased Aristopet Flea & Tick Shampoo and have not seen any more ticks on the dogs since washing them in it. It is soap free so can be used in conjunction with Frontline/Advantix etc if you want to use th0ose products as well.
  7. Jack Russell Terrier. Big dog in a little dogs body. I have 1 pure JRT bitch and 1 JRT X male (both desexed) and they live with 2 kids, 2 cats and 3 other dogs including a Amstaff X and a Dobermann. Not to be trusted with mice/rats/birds but lovely with other people and dogs and always eager to have cuddles and sleeps on a lap/lounge/bed! Both my kids (now 9 and 11) walk them with no troubles and have done for a few years now.
  8. This is Odie, JRT X Chi. Mostly people say that he is 'interesting' looking but I have been told that he is the 'ugliest dog I've ever seen'! Personally I think he is adorable. He has greenish/yellowish coloured eyes and a chocolate nose and has the biggest personality of any dog I've ever met.
  9. When I was tought how to do it the vet explained it by saying that if they are full they feel like a hard pea. (this was in a smallish dog, have never done it to a large dog) It does take some practice to be able to do it right and you have to be extra careful not to do any damage.
  10. I used to own Bull Terriers and people were always saying how ugly they were! My own mother used to say that they were her ugliest grandchildren! People would also loudly call out 'look at the Pitt Bulls' and grab their children and give me a wide berth. Although it wasn't all bad, I was outside a Woollies one day waiting for OH when a little old lady (easily 80+ years old) came out and told me how beautiful they were and spent 10 minutes kissing and cuddling them!
  11. I feel the same way bout giving 'advice' to these people. I feel like most of them wouldn't be interested anyway, I mean no one wants to feel like they've done something stupid and so most of them make excuses and then promptly forget about anything you've said. Especially when the 'breeder' is probably reassuring him that the pup is really good quality and worth breeding from.
  12. It was the Pet Barn in Palmerston that I went to today. Won't be going back there if I can help it. Unfortunately there isn't alot of other options for me. The dog food I've just started using is only available from Pet Barn up here and the other 2 pet shops sell puppies and kittens and one proceeded to tell OH all about Discus (fish) and try to correct him on things he said about them even after we told her that we used to run a pet shop and that we had kept and bred Discus (very successfully) in the past! Makes me want to
  13. I have to say that in my personal opinion the working kelpies are WAY more attractive. The bench kelpies look to big and heavy to run and work all day long. I also like the red and tan and black and tan way more than the solid colours. My ex-husband has a uncle that bred his own working kelpies (used to own a sheep farm) and he had some beautiful creamy coloured dogs.
  14. We moved last month. We drove from VIC to Darwin, with all 5 dogs (and 2 kids) Not something I'll be doing again! I sure hope he is all Dobe! I have rego papers that say he is. I'd be calling his breeder with a 'please explain' if he didn't look like one.
  15. hey lilylsmum, Theer is actually 2 Petbarns here in Darwin and the smaller one (it's the furthest away from me) has nice, competent staff, unfortunately for me the larger one is really close and we just popped in there for some crickets. OH said on the way out that I should apply for a job there as manager and get rid of the idiots! Edit cause I can't spell
  16. Ososwift - He is black and tan and although only 8 months old he obviously (to me anyway!) looks like a Dobe. Just took a couple of pics (sorry bout the quality, took with a phone), what do you guys think? Although I shouldn't be surprised by his lack of breed knowledge, when I used to go the Sydney Royal for flyball with my last Dobe people would always ask if he was a rotty X. One of the other competitors always sarcastically replied 'yes, he is cross with a greyhound' and most believed it!
  17. Just went up to Pet Barn to get some crickets and took Acheron with me. When we walked through the door the young guy behind the counter came around oooing and ahhing over Acheron and asked what is he? Ok, so I can forgive him for not knowing a Doberman when he sees one but then proceeds to tell me how healthy and shiny he looks and then asks me what I feed him. I tell him mostly raw but also some premium holistic kibble. I explained that this is what his breeders raise their dogs on and I beleive somewhere in the conversation I also mentioned that I had owned a Doberman previously and knew a bit about the breed. So then he starts to lecture me about how I should be feeding him a large breed puppy food at least until he is 18 months old and how 'they' (dobermans I presume) can have growth issues if not fed properly. He also tells me that 'they' (again I presume he meant Dobermans) are 'really hard to train'. He didn't even know what Acheron was when I walked into the shop and now he is a expert? Honestly all you have to do is look at my dogs and you can see how healthy they all are and are obviously being fed well. Also while I was waiting he was serving a couple (they had a SBT X) and was telling them that if the dog keeps pulling on a flat collar they should get a 'choker chain' and let the dog 'choke' itself until it learns not to pull anymore as that is what his brother had to do with his 'staffy' cause they are stupid dogs! Where do they find these people?
  18. I have jut pulled a couple of pics from the Kepala thread because those guys have much better cameras than I do and take better pics! So here is Odie (JRT x Chi) and Acheron (Doberman, about 6 months old in that pic)
  19. Isn't he a thoughtful boy! He must hold you in very high esteem to offer you such a valuable and desirable 'gift'.
  20. Basically have oil burners going all the time. We have just moved into a new house and it has tiles throughout, including bedrooms. I have noticed that there is no lingering dog smell in this house. We have previously lived in a house with wooden floors and it seemed to retain the smell almost as much as carpet, although I'm not sure how and why? I will add I have 5 dogs that are inside pretty much all day (it's hot here) and 2 of them sleep inside overnight and it is such a relief to not have to be worried about dog smell when people come over. Gotta love tiles Will never have carpet again!
  21. and they dont get "really friendly" with your guests My boys don't do that whether entire or desexed. Maybe that is part of proper and appropriate socialisation and training and not a gender issue at all???? My boys don't do that either. My desexed male (JRTxChi) does get very friendly with our male (also desexed) cat. It's actually pretty funny to see cause the cat is twice his size and just sits there with this bored look on his face! He doesn't do it often and always stops when told.
  22. Boys. Over the years I've just found that I have a much stronger bond with male dogs. I have 5 dogs ATM - 2 girls, both desexed and 3 boys, 1 desexed, 2 entire. All 3 boys follow me everywhere, even to the toilet! Girls are much more independent and don't seem to need as much contact or interaction as the boys.
  23. Bakergirl - that's very disappointing for you. The one and only time I have (so far) purchased a dog from a registered breeder has been a wonderful experience. From now on it will be the only way I get any future dogs. I have become quite friendly with them and we are in regular contact (despite living thousands of kms apart). They are always interested in hearing how Acheron is doing and even came to my house for a visit before we moved. I have invited them here (Darwin) for a holiday any time they like they are very keen to come and escape the horrid Vic weather! I immediately felt a connection with this couple and we share similar views on dogs and training and I will be going to them for our next Dobe. I don't think successfully showing dogs has anything to do with being a good breeder. Acherons breeders don't show at all (they breed working line Dobermans), but are heavily involved with dogs in other ways (both of them work with dogs as a living) and have a passion for the breed.
  24. Doesn't look like a pure lab. Maybe cross with a Weim?
