Seven Yr Old Savaged By Dog At His School Gates
Remarkabull replied to RottnBullies's topic in In The News
Are you sure it was a SBT as you may upset Wiseguy. I've seen a few over the years so yeah, sure it was a SBT. The other dog looked SBT x but didn't want to say that as I couldn't be positive about which breeds were in the mix -
Seven Yr Old Savaged By Dog At His School Gates
Remarkabull replied to RottnBullies's topic in In The News
Terrible. But it could have been worse Why did you post the article at all if not for my benefit? Another unsubstantiated identification of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, a dog a grown man could barely pull away using all his strength. Give me a break. Either the man is a finalist in the Mr Punyverse contest or the dog was something other than a SBT. Sometimes one has to dismount his high horse & get into the gutter when the call comes. This was such an occasion. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Only 2 weeks ago I pulled a SBT off another dog and I'm only a woman . This dog was savagely attacking another dog (bull breed x) and had all but torn it's throat out. Owners kept saying that he was obedient and friendly, sure looked that way. While it's not always easy, there are ways to stop dogs fighting and attacking and I have no doubt this woman was full of adrenalin and that contributed to her being able to get this dog off this little boy. She may also be very dog savvy and just knew what to do in that situation, who knows? Glad both people stepped in to help and hope the little boy recovers well. -
I also have 2 big dogs that suffer from that syndrome! One in particular seems to prefer the little dogs bed to her own. Bad photo taken with bad camera but you can get the drift.

Smoking Around Dogs & Other Pets

OT but why are there so many chemicals in cigarettes And why on earth would any sane person willingly put it in their body? -
Smoking Around Dogs & Other Pets
Remarkabull replied to Baileys mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
That's terrible, I hope he makes a full recovery. My dad's mum died of lung cancer - she was a non smoker. Her husband (dad's dad) also died of lung cancer - he was a smoker. They slept in separate rooms for as long as I knew them and poppa nearly burnt the house down many times from falling asleep with a cigarette in his mouth! I remember his sheets had scorch marks and holes in them. My mums dad also died of lung cancer (he was a heavy smoker). He used to live in a granny flat out the back of our house and I can remember hearing him cough from inside my room at night. He also had a pet galah that used to imitate his coughing (was actually pretty funny) but when he moved in with us mum made him keep the bird in a aviary or in the outside laundry in bad weather because she worried about the smoke making the bird sick too. -
Smoking Around Dogs & Other Pets
Remarkabull replied to Baileys mum's topic in General Dog Discussion
There are no smokers in this house, however some of our friends smoke and if they are here they have to go outside, usually on their own as we hate the smell. As for having animals inside when people are smoking is just awful, especially if it's a long term thing and it can't be healthy. Personally I find many (not all ) smokers to be selfish and unconcerned with the comfort of others (pets or people). I choose not to smoke so why should I or my kids and pets have to breathe it in when it's not our choice? -
I just wanted to add that my opinion on dog foods is based on ingredients and cost. For the main ingredients in SD you could get yourself something from the supermarket at less than half the cost that is very similar in grain content and it would probably keep your dog looking and feeling just as good as it does on SD and save yourself a small fortune in the process. I just can not feed something that has so much grain (and plenty of other unnecessary crap) and so little meat to a dog and pay a fortune for the privilege. This does not just apply to SD, I feel this way about many/most of the 'premium' foods out there.
-
I would never feed it to my dogs. In my personal opinion it is overpriced rubbish, but then again I think that many of the 'premium' foods are. Many of them have ingredients that are no better than what you can buy in the supermarket. I will never again pay a fortune for packaged dog food. currently I feed raw only and it doesn't cost any more than buying a 'premium' dog food (in fact so far it is costing less and I have 5 dogs). I'm not against packaged food and I will introduce it again (when I can get one up here that I'm happy with) because it makes it easier if the dogs have to go into a boarding kennel and also if I forget to get mince out of the freezer for them I just hate that people are paying a small fortune for something that is not worth it.

Yes both of mine and my SIL's dog all used to do it! Also every dobe I've known loves to have their ears rubbed and will groan in pleasure when getting it done. Both my Dobes (past and present) love to bite the water coming out of the hose.

Who Feeds Canned Dog Food?
Remarkabull replied to shepherdpower's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have fed tinned food (Pal) years ago to my old dogs. They always seemed to have firm poos and were very healthy although it was always mixed in with dry food too and they had bones a couple of times a week. Currently I feed raw only but on the days where I've forgotten to get the meat out of the freezer I have a couple of cans of Natures Gift handy in the pantry. It seems to have no ill effects and the dogs really enjoy it. I wouldn't feed it exclusively but will continue to use it as a 'sometimes' food. -
Yes you got it right. She was pretty mad when I told her she shouldn't have a dog . I was so angry at her attitude and I should probably have shut up myself but I hate bullies and that is what she was trying to do to this other guy (the poor mans wife and 3 kids were on the other side of the road watching this go on). I guess acting like that has worked in the past for her and she thought it would work again and she got even angrier when it backfired and I didn't back off in fear. I still can't believe that no one had stopped to help them before me. There were cars driving past and people walking by just watching it happen. I would have thought that someone would have at least called a ranger or the police There are so many clueless people out there it's scary!

She was pretty worked up and I understand how if feels to be in that situation but they (her and her OH) were the typical 'bogan' type. When he first arrived (she sent the kids to get him) he immediately went up tho the other bloke and started poking him in the chest telling him to 'grab hold of your bloody dog' (he had his dog by the lead the whole time!) meanwhile I was standing there hanging on to his dog by the back legs and the woman was still standing there like an idiot. She kept trying to blame the other guy by telling him he shouldn't be riding a bile with the dog and that it was the way that he let the dogs interact that started it! Her bloody dog was the one that got away from her and approached the other dog! She kept saying that I 'haven't got a clue about dogs' and didn't know what I was talking about. I then told her I have 5 dogs, have had dogs my entire life and been a vet nurse. She then went off about that saying 'that would be right, vets don't have a clue either, every time my daughter takes her dog to the vet it comes back with whooping cough'. I told her she probably meant kennel cough and maybe her daughter should vaccinate the dog? That's when she went to punch me
-
I'm still fuming over the way this woman carried on, but there is some good news. My OH just spoke to the owner of the dog that was attacked and it is at the vet and is being treated. It will require surgery and the vet has talked the owner into having it desexed at the same time (it is an entire male 18 month old bull breed x) He seems like a nice enough guy, just not too dog savvy. Anyway the husband of the crazy woman has called to check up on the dog and has already given his credit card details to the vet who is treating the injured dog. I think he has realised that his dog was at fault and is now very apologetic and willing to help (he was trying to get his wife to leave once I separated the dogs but she kept coming back to yell at me some more!) Vet has said that bill will be over the $1000 mark (not including the desexing) so I'm glad the guy with the offending dog has stepped up to pay for it's treatment.

Was just on my way home from a walk with the dogs and OH and while waiting to cross the road we saw a dog fight in progress. It was between a SBT (looked like a badly bred BYB job) and a bull breed mix. A lady walking past us said that it had been going on for 'a while' and both owners were just standing there watching it happen! I told OH to take our dogs home and I ran down to see if I could help. When I got there the lady with the SBT told me to 'EFF OFF' and the guy with the other dog looked like he wanted to do something but didn't know what. (It turned out he had been riding his bike with wife and kids and had a baby in a carrier with him, that's why he hadn't done too much at that stage). Both dogs had a lead on but he was the only one that actually had hold of his dog. I decided to put some DOLer advice to use and I grabbed the back legs of the SBT and within 10 seconds he let the other dog go . Just then the SBT owners husband came over and started yelling at the guy with the mauled dog. The bike guy told him that his dog had been on the lead under his control the whole time and that the SBT had gotten away from the lady and although he tried to avoid the dog it approached him and attacked his dog. The lady with the SBT was a moron and kept telling us to Eff off and both her and her husband kept saying 'but Zac is obedient' and 'I walk him every day'. I just laughed and said obviously the dog is not so obedient and she obviously doesn't have control of the dog. She then tell me that 'you don't have a effing clue' and went to punch me! By this stage my OH had taken our dogs home and come back in the car to get me and see if we need any help and I could see him getting ready to knock this stupid woman out. The dog that was attacked has severe lacerations to his neck and throat and the skin has actually been separated from the muscle. I told the guy to take it to a vet straight away and we exchanged numbers so I could back him up with what happened if this goes any further (as it should, at the very least to cover his vet costs). I have a DA dog and she would possibly attack a dog if she was approached so I wasn't angry that there was a fight but that the lady was trying to place the blame on the other guy and was reacting so stupidly to the whole thing. If it was me I would be apologising profusely and trying my best to be helpful. The aggressive dog lady is the very reason that bull breeds have the image problems that they do. Poor bloody dog.

Oh, wow. You have 2 dogs and you're renting? I've been looking for a place to rent, need to take 1 of the dogs with me. But i am having an impossible time finding a suitable house, that allows pets. I have and am renting with 5 dogs. It's a regular suburban block. Our landlords and neighbours have always been fine with it (I hate barking dogs and will not tolerate it from my own). As for how many dogs is too many, I would say I'm well over my limit and will be keeping it down to 2 when my current dogs pass on. I have very strong bonds with 2 of my dogs and feel guilty that I don't get to give as much attention to the other 3 because my 2 entire boys demand so much of my attention.

How Many Of Your Dogs Do You Walk At Once?
Remarkabull replied to snow_wolf's topic in General Dog Discussion
I've walked 4 of mine together on occasion, but would not attempt all 5 at once because one of mine is DA and I need to keep a close eye on her. The down side is that they can work each other up and definitely get that 'pack' mentality when they are all together. -
I'd feed Supercoat before I'd feed Science Diet, and I would have to have have no other choice to feed either of them! I'd rather feed them the Woolies Select dog food and if money ever became that much of an issue I would. I have used Bonnie in the past and at the time it was fine, dogs did well on it. Can't feed it anymore, my Dobe is 'sensitive' to processed foods so they are all on raw now. Have fed him Black Hawk however and that was fine, but can't get it up here in Darwin.

Yeah it does have ground brown rice but for the quality of it, it certainly beats most dry foods out there. The rice isn't in there as a filler. My two don't do well on other dry food fulls of fillers but BH agrees with them. Just my opinion as I've tried many dry foods in the last 18 months to find something that isn't a waste of money and full of corn/sorghum. I think it's a great food too and used to feed it to my dogs when I lived in VIC so not saying it's bad or anything, it's just the OP asked about grain free food and I was just pointing out that it is not grain free. :D
-
While I think BH is a great food, it does contain rice doesn't it? EVO is grain free but unfortunately you can only get if from the dreaded PP or PGD and the last time I was in a PGD store (a year ago) the price had jumped by about $20-$30 a bag! :D Why not go all raw?

Your Experience With Registered Breeders
Remarkabull replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
I found Acherons breeders out of luck. Fortunately they were using the lines I was interested in anyway and we just got chatting and I ended up buying a pup! Quite funny that I found them at a dog show, but they don't really show their dogs (working lines) but were there with friends and to socialise the puppies! Am still in regular contact with them and have even invited them to Darwin for a holiday! -
And one more with Flash, his favourite dog.
-
I don't have any really good ones so will try to get some over the weekend, but in the meantime here is one more that we took the other night.
-
Yep. Was feeling frustrated recently because the people down the road have 'bred' their 'staffies'. My kids are friends with thier kids and I was informed a few days ago that the dog had puppies . Neither parent looks like a proper SBT, the father is a very large pied dog with a big boxy head and mum is a very small red bitch whose ears stand up like a ACD and is just generally an ugly looking dog.

Was just out taking Acheron (Dobe) and Barkley (Maltese x Shi Tzu) for a walk and a lady and 2 little boys rode past on bikes and she stopped and asked if Acheron was a Dobe and then went on to say how lovely he was and where did I get him from etc etc. Not a big deal really, but she is one of the first people to actually know what he is and appreciate him for it. Most people ask about Barkley, comment how cute he is (he is cute but is not a well bred dog, he has his share of problems, both physically and personality wise ;) ) and want to know if I will be breeding with him (no) because he is so cute and his puppies would be so cute and fluffy! Was a nice start to the day and made me smile.

Allergic Reaction? Or Something Else?
Remarkabull replied to ravenau1's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Does the dog sleep outside? Looks like mosquito bites. My last Dobe used to have a reaction like that to mosquitos, he would end up covered in little bumps all over his body. Went to a vet about it once, they tried to tell me over the phone that it was a flea allergy. I explained that the dogs didn't have any fleas and that I thought that it was mosquito bites, they insisted that it would be fleas until I got him there and they took a look at him and declared that it was definitley NOT a flea allergy and was most likely a reaction to mossie bites!
