  1. Agree, my breed isn't recognized by ANKC (we are aiming for that eventually) but our pups come with papers, parents are health tested and we have rules and code of ethics etc to follow.
  2. Located in Darwin, which in itself is an issue due to crappy vets :/ I'll pass on the replies.
  3. Hi guys, today a lady on FB was looking for a Lab breeder so she could ask a few questions about her recently purchased pup. There were no responses so I offered to ask for I found on here for her. Story is as follows: Pup was purchased from breeder down south and flown up 2 weeks ago (pup was 9 weeks old when flown). They have noticed that pup doesn't seem to be responding to sound at all (talking, calling, dropping things near pup and making loud noises etc). Their other dog has growled at pup in warning when it has been biting it's tail and it doesn't seem to respond to that either. Pup does respond to hand/arm movements. She has taken pup to vet and vet was less than helpful and didn't seemed concerned or interested in following up with it, was more interested in pushing to get pup desexed ASAP. I've suggested anew vet to start with and also to contact the breeder but as I'm not familiar with Labs I thought I'd ask here for any other advise/ideas.
  4. Where in NT are you? I know of a trainer that might be able to help you out. There is also a behavioralist in Alice Springs who comes to Darwin regularly. I gave to say the vets up here are pretty useless and I haven't found one I really like. Another reason to be excited about leaving at the end of the year :)
  5. If I think it's likely to hurt my dogs I will yell get away in a deep, loud voice (lost my voice instantly last time I did it). It's given them cause to be wary of the crazy lady and has made them keep back long enough for owners to grab so far. If they kept coming then I'd kick them as hard as I could.
  6. Well, we 'might' be getting a new addition soon :) Bitch is due in about 3 weeks time and if there is a suitable girl that I like the she will be coming to join the Remarkabull dogs. Just a little bit excited!
  7. Just saw that and was also pleased that no cries of pit bull were made. I did cringe though when the owner said that the big dog had her in a 'jaw lock'. The little dog definitely needed some training, as do its owners.
  8. Ah, the whelping in the bedroom scenario. I know that one :D Kizie Poodle had a great whelping box build for her in an air-conditioned room. She had been shown the box, slept in the box. Day of wehlping, she nudged open the bottom drawer of a hand-made cedar chest of drawers. It was her home for the next 6 weeks. Lol, thankfully Simi was happy to stay in the whelping box. I only planned on leaving them in my room for a week but the pups had other ideas and cried constantly and loudly when removed from the air con in my room so they stayed there another 2 weeks. I also converted my loungeroom into a puppy crèche until they went to their new homes.
  9. I think that it's a very common misconception that all breeders are like puppy farmers. There was a guy on FB looking for a pup and when it was suggested he check out a registered breeder he had a rant about not wanting to buy off a kennel and would prefer byb as they are loved pets. I told him I must be doing all wrong then as my birch whelped in my bedroom and stayed there with her pups for the first 3 weeks of their lives.
  10. I always talk to mine. Mostly I say things like 'you are so good looking' or 'you're so handsome' to Arnold and I tell Simi that she is the prettiest girl in the whole wide world. I also apologize when I'm going somewhere that they can't come and explain that it's because people are stupid and don't understand how special they are :) We're moving at the end of the year and I've started telling them about all the adventures we will have.
  11. Lol, $500 per week is on the cheap end of rentals up here in Darwin! It looks like I might be bringing my horse with me so if possible we'd like to rent something that has room for him too, otherwise I'll have to find agistment for him. Does anyone have any idea on cost if agistment or even the availability of rentals that are a little bit rural with a few acres?
  12. Good to know Staffyluv. I'd rather be in a DHA house as they don't seem to have as many worries with the number of dogs or if I have them inside.
  13. We will probably try to get a house in NSW if possible. I dont mind the country town feel as long as it's not hours to the nearest city. We could get a house through DHA but there probably isn't many down there to choose from. I'd love to have a get together with the dogs once we settle in :)
  14. Thanks, we've just had a look at some rentals and some look great. We don't mind a commute at all. Happy to drive each 40 minutes or so if needed.
  15. So my husband has been posted to Canberra and we will be moving at the end of the year. We will be looking for a rental and we have 4 dogs and 2 cats so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a suburb that the council is likely to grant me a permit for the dogs? We would also consider semi rural if that would help. Hubby will be mainly working near the airport but we don't me down a bit of a drive if it makes it easier to have the dogs. I'm so excited and can't wait to leave Darwin!
  16. There has been more people than usual advertising pups for sale on FEB sites up here and there were a few comments that made me cringe. One guy was telling everyone (with great authority I might add) that crossbreed don't have any genetic problems and purebreds are nothing but trouble. This was after someone was trying to explain that a purebred from a registered breeder is a better choice as they will have been tested for any genetic issues in the breed etc. The guy also went on to say that he would prefer a pup from a byb because at least they aren't kept in cages all day like registered breeders dogs are.
  17. I'd be interested in the results too. Obviously I'd prefer to use something more natural, but I'd like to know that it actually does what it says it will before spending that much money. I have 4 dogs so not sure how economical it will be for me but if it works I'd give it a try.
  18. Thanks. I read the other thread and I know of Augustine Approved but didn't realize they made this Faith stuff. It is super expensive and thought I'd ask here if anyone knew much about it as the lady who sells the AA stuff is heavily bias towards their products (which is fine but I want to know a bit more about it first from a less involved source). I think I'll give it a miss for now :)
  19. There is a lady up here in Darwin who sells holistic products for pets and she has recently started selling a product called Faith. It's a supplement that apparently helps prevent worms (heart and intestinal) and also is a treatment for skin issues amongst other things. Sounds great but I have never heard of it before and can't find any info on it so was hoping some DOlers may know about it/have tried it and give me feedback.
  20. Well we made it through one night without issue. I kept him on my bed again so I could check. Hardly bloody slept all night! I'm working today but have a day off tomorrow so will be going to vet to discuss surgery.
  21. Lol, I tried the frozen peas but he hated that more than the lube and my 'help'. I took a pic of the issue on Friday. I'll see if I can post it here
  22. I've seen the penis stuck out before on other dogs (mostly because of the sheath rolling in on itself) and have always managed to correct it quickly but that isn't what is happening here. I can get my finger under the skin of sheath and pull it to try and get it over his penis but it won't stay there. So far very time it has corrected itself eventually and his penis hasn't dried out or lost circulation (wellnot enough to have caused major harm at this stage) but it does get cold. I'm thinking get he might need the surgery to make the hole just a little more open.
  23. I hope it stops happening. I've had 2 days off work and had to leave for an hour yesterday to take him to vet. They're fairly understanding at this stage but will probably get over it real soon.
  24. It's gone back in! I thought I'd try again and poured KY all over it and although I can get my finger under the skin I couldn't get it to stay over the penis. Poor Arnold was crying and trying to get away so I gave up. I could see him tensing the sheath on and off and after about 10 minutes he got it back in himself. I think I'll get the Suprelorin implant (I think vet said there is a 6 month one) to see if that stops it happening and will also look into the surgery to open up the hole a bit. I'm so bloody received it went back.
