  1. Mine get heart worm as its always warm and moist here so plenty of bugs. Intestinal wormers only get done once or twice a year and they get C3 vac as puppies and again for the first booster and then no more (unless I had to board them) ETA spelling
  2. I used to have e ferret when we lived in Sydney. She was allowed out for many hours during the day to roam the house and one day I had forgotten that she was out and opened the solid front door to let air in and she escaped through the fly screen door. I'm not sure how long she was outside for but once I realised I ran to the door calling her name and she appeared out of the garden, covered in dirt with this 'what do you want' look on her face. We used to scare the s#£t out of visitors by letting her out while the Dobermann was inside. She would leap at his face and hang off his lips while he ignored her and walked around with a ferret hanging off his face :)
  3. This exactly! I have a DA dog (fear based) and he gets no pleasure being too close to strange dogs. He loves to play with my other dogs and in no way is he missing out on anything because he can't socialise with random dogs. My dog isnt DA off lead, but i think teaching him to interact with other dogs is important as what if something goes wrong one day. He escapes the yard, i trip drop the lead?? If you have a DA dog you have to make sure these things don't happen. Most DA dogs can't be taught to interact in a friendly way, the training that is done to help the dog is about managing things so that interaction with other dogs is avoided and so that the DA dogs threshold is raised to cope with being able to be near other dogs. Actual interaction with other dogs isn't recommended for dogs that are DA. Too dangerous. Yes ^^^ My dog does not lunge and bark at other dogs while we are out walking. If I dropped the lead he won't go anywhere and he has a great recall even if other dogs are in view. He avoids other dogs if possible but i have no doubt that if he felt overwhelmed or if a dog came too close he would 'have a go' at it. We don't go to dog parks and I ave reduced how often I walk him because so many people around her walk their dogs off lead and have zero control and I don't want to ever put him in a position where he feels he has no option but to bite.

  5. Acheron = boof head, Smasheron, you big dickhead :) Simi = Miss Sim, Dim Sim, wiggle butt and pork chop. Flash = Flashy (clever, I know), bitch face Barkley = hairy monster, Bark-a-ley, mummy's boy and both little dogs also get called 'the whippy snappys' regularly.
  6. I do it on the FB buy, swap, sell sites. I get abused and called names but admin always removes the adds so its worth it :)
  7. There are heaps of people on FB buy and sell sites selling/giving away puppies and older dogs, mostly because 'we are moving and can't take dog with us' or 'we have too many animals'. Usually within a few days if said dog has not been rehomed the words 'need gone today' appear. It makes me so sad and angry that these people have no regard for these poor animals they get with no thought and discard them with even less consideration
  8. Gee this thread is making me feel like my family are filthy pigs! We all allow the dogs to kiss (lick) us, including on the face sometimes. We will often share food with them and shock horror we don't always wash our hands before eating or touching food. None of us get sick often and we have no allergies or health issues. When I met my husband he had asthma and suffered from hay fever quite badly. He grew up in a non pet home with parents who are of the opinion that animals are 'dirty' and should stay outside. He has since been cleared from having asthma and rarely suffers from hay fever anymore and definitely not with the severity he once did. I am a little more reserved with other people's dogs and there are a few that have come for grooming who I can barely stand to touch let alone let them lick me!
  9. I'm with Pav Lova, we are sharers in this house! Dogs are allowed to lick us if we allow it but they stop when told to. Bulldog kisses are the best! Simi is a snuffler more than a licker. She snuffles all over your face, in particular ears and nose and has been known to nibble on the odd occasion :)
  10. I recently had an online argument with someone who was trying to sell their 6 week old Shar Pei x Pittbull pups on a buy, swap and sell site. I mentioned that 6 weeks was too young and all hell broke loose! I was called all sorts of names and given all sorts of excuses. He said he had not been able to go to work since the pups were born as they needed to be hand raised and couldn't afford any more time off so the pups 'had to go'. He was asking $500 each for them (no vacc or chip). Site admin removed his post as it is illegal to sell pups under 8 weeks in NT but they are back up there today, now for only $350 Ono. He seems to be having trouble selling them, so hopefully this will not be something he will do agin.
  11. She is adorable! My husbands auntie has 2 Griffons and they are so cute :) Some people have no taste, when I mentioned to a lady a few days ago that I had a Bulldog she was insistent that they are hideous! I told her how adorable Simi is and almost everyone wants to kiss and cuddle her and she was nearly sick at the thought!
  12. I'm not fond of people names for animals either. My Dobe is called Acheron (pronounced Ash er on). He is a character in a book, a very dark, dangerous, sexy character! In the book series Acheron has a pet demon called Simi, which is the name we gave our Bulldog :) I have just purchased a Quarter Horse filly who I really wanted to call Stevie (Nicks) to go with my TB gelding, Axl (Rose) but my husband really doesn't like it so we have decided on Jinx.
  13. I know a few breeders and show people up here and they have told me that Steven at The Ark Veterinary Clinic is a fantastic surgeon. I have never had a consult with him so I don't have a personal opinion but have heard good things.
  14. It's so tempting to get another dog of the same breed because the one you had was so special to you but be prepared because its unlikely it will be just like the dog you miss so much. I did this 3 years ago when I got another Doberman and he is nothing like the heart dog I lost. If I'm completely honest I was trying to have another dog just like the one I lost and it definitely didn't work out the way I was hoping. I dearly love my Dobe but he is nothing like my heart dog and it was my heart that made the decision to get another Dobe and not my head. Our current lifestyle is not really suited to having a large, young working breed who requires as much exercise and mental stimulation as a Dobe. We both work full time and I also have kids who do after school activities and a horse who needs to be tended to twice a day so that leaves me too tired to give Acheron all the time and energy he deserves. Your situation meh be completely different to mine and it may work out perfectly but this is just what happened with my situation and I wish I had thought about it more carefully and with less emotion that I did.
  15. I guess I'll just have to give it a try and see how they go :) I'm aware that its not comparable to the more premium foods but given that it is only part (probably around half) of my dogs weekly diet and the other half is fresh, raw food then it should be ok. 3 of my dogs can eat just about anything and still look great but Simi (Bulldog) is more 'delicate' and needs a much better diet to keep her looking her best ;)
  16. Thanks, I didn't see the other thread before. My dogs are doing well on Earthborn Holistic but it costs a small fortune to get it mailed to Darwin so it would be good if they did ok on this one. I don't feed kibble exclusively so they would also be getting raw meat and bones and sardines, yoghurt, raw eggs and other bits and pieces so they should be ok on it even if its not as good as the more premium foods.
  17. I was in Woolies last night and noticed that there is a new dog food on the shelf and its grain free! Has anyone tried it? If its any good I'll definitely give it a go as its the only grain free food I've seen in Darwin. I currently pay $40 postage to ship a bag of food up fron NSW every few weeks so it will be more convenient and cost effective for me. Let me know what your thoughts, experiences with it are please :)
  18. I've used BH in the past and been happy with it but I have tried it again recently and it definitely doesn't agree with Simi. I also tried them on VAN and they don't do too well on that either. I recently brought a bag of Earthborn Hollistic Primitive and Simi is thriving on it. Her coat is no longer patchy and has gone back to its dark, rich red so it looks like I'll be sticking with EH and RMB.
  19. We're going away for 3weeks over Christmas and I have a guy I work with staying at our house. He is a lovely older gent and I feel pretty comfortable with him being here. As we will be in a caravan we are taking 2 dogs with us and leaving 2 at home, as well as 3 cats and 2 snakes for him to care for. My main instructions are that the dogs are not to leave the yard unless emergency (Acheron can be DA and its not worth the risk) and that if the weather is bad or there are fireworks that he let them inside. I feel much better about someone staying here than the dogs being in a kennel for 3 weeks. I'll worry no matter what but at least I can check up on them equally and I know they'll be more comfortable being at home.
  20. Acheron was 12 weeks old when we got him and we already knew our next Dobe would be called Acheron. His breeders theme was a letter, so all pups registered names start with a 'C'. His reg name is Von Roth Condor. With Simi we got to choose her name as we were on a waiting list prior to her birth and breeder allowed puppy buyers to choose names. Her reg name is Dinky Di Simi.
  21. Thanks for replies. A couple of years ago Barkley was stung by a bee and his face went up like a balloon! I took him to vet and they gave him antihistamine by injection that time but I remember them telling me that I could give him people ones if it happened again but can't remember if there was a specific one or not. No bee sting this time just what I think is a reaction to a different dry food I've started to feed again but it's the first time Simi has had it and she has been getting more and more itchy over the last couple of weeks. I'm guessing it's the food as she hasn't had any prior issues with skin problems etc. I have got her back on Vets All Natural as of today but thought maybe an antihistamine might help soothe her until it settles back down.
  22. I know it's been discussed before but just need a quick response. Which one is ok for dogs? I have Telfast or AllerEze here at home and they bot have different active ingredients so not sure. Help please.
  23. So excited to find BH up here in the NT! I walked into one of the pet shops and saw a couple do bags on display. I just about did a happy dance as I've been buying it online and paying a fortune in freight so to have a supplier locally is awesome.
  24. Any chance we will get them in the NT? I would love to give them a try on my dogs.
