A question to all the breeders out there, do you get your bitches scanned to confirm pregnancy or do you just wait and see? My bitch was AI'd 3 weeks ago and the vet suggested having a scan at 28 days to see if anything is in there but while talking to a work colleague today (who breeds and shows Pharoh Hounds) she said don't bother and just wait and see. This is my first litter and this bitch means the world to me and I want to know if she is pregnant and also how many pups to expect but I don't want to do anything or stress her out if not necessary. Opinions please :)

How Did Your Dog Get It's Name?
Remarkabull replied to Little Gifts's topic in General Dog Discussion
Acheron - we had that picked out long before we got him. He is a character in a book, a dark, dangerous and sexy guy. I think that suits a Dobermann to a tea :) Simi - also picked out in advance, from the same series of books as Acheron. Simi is Acherons pet demon. Flash - she was a fat little ball when we first got her but now she is a typical JRT and is as quick as a flash, so it worked out well. Barkley - when I first saw him he had a long fringe hanging over his eyes, just like the dog in Seseme Street. -
I must be missing something because I haven't seen one post where anyone has said that little dogs rushing or attacking a larger dog is ok? I have large and small dogs and I have had my dogs rushed at by other dogs of varying sizes. Two occasions particularly come to mind because of the reaction of the offending dogs owners. The first was many years ago and I was walking my Bull Terrier bitch and a SWF came tearing across a front lawn and crossed a road, yapping its head off. For its safety I picked my dog up and held her until the owners could grab their dog. Eventually the owner made his way over to us, laughing at what was going on and made some snide comment about my bitch being so scared of his little dog I had to pick her up. I gave him a filthy look and said she's not scared, I picked her up so she didn't kill your stupid dog! He then launched into an attack saying that breeds like that shouldn't be allowed etc. I turned and went on my way. The other was more recent, only 18 mths ago. I was walking my Dobe at a park that had a fenced area for off lead (I was not in the off lead area) and I could see someone in the fenced area with a dog. My Dobe all of a sudden became very alert and I turned to see this other dog running flat out towards me. At first I wasn't that worried as there was a fence between us but the dog turned when it realised the fence was there, jumped in the lake, swam around the fence and kept coming at us! I put my dog behind me and yelled at the top of my lung's 'get away' at the dog. Thankfully it was enough to make the dog rethink (it was a young, entire male Pitt Bull) and it slowed and circled us. I kept myself facing him and yelled every time he looked like coming closer. The whole time his owner was yelling at the dog to come back and when he finally arrived he was annoyed that I had yelled at his dog. He said 'he only wanted to play' and then started whinging about the fact that the leash free area was not secure enough. There is no way in hell that dog was coming to have a friendly game with mine and it scared me how clueless this guy was about his own dog! So there are plenty of people out there with all sizes and breeds of dog who don't know or don't care about the effect their dogs behaviour has on other people. personally I'd rather be rushed by the little ones at least then I know my dogs won't get hurt and I have a better chance of avoiding them getting close enough for my dogs to hurt them. Of course I'd prefer people to be responsible and keep their dogs restrained but I don't think that's ever going to happen

I have 4 and they are all inside with us mst of the time although the Dobermann sleeps outside now cause he can't usually go through the night without needing to go to the toilet and I'm tired enough! I would prefer to have 2 or maybe 3 and will not have this many again at once until we stop moving around so much (husband is in army) and we have our own place. I will also be sticking with the same breed from now on as the size and personality differences can cause some issues when we go out, lots of juggling and making sure they're all in the right place etc.

I don't think the disease is cute or funny but that little dog looked very happy and is obviously very loved. She appears to have a great life and gets to do normal doggy things. If she were my dog I probably wouldn't have made a video about her ( not because of her issues but just becuse its not my thing) but I'm not going make assumptions or judgements on them for choosing doing it.

I've got a JRT to hunt small animals, a Dobermann to bring down bigger ones and protect me, a small fluffy to alert us and a Bulldog to snuggle with at night and wait for the first 2 to bring her food! I'd be pretty comfortable actually :)

What, if any health tests are required for Yorkshire Terriers? A lady on a local buy, swap, sell site is selling Yorkie x Poodles (I won't mention what she is calling them!) for $1000 and is saying hoe rare they are and that they are worth that much money. I have asked if parents are health tested and her answer was that they have been to vet and are healthy. I know poodles should be tested for PRA and can have Patella issues but know nothing about Yorkies. I figure if I can make the people reading the posts think about this they might do more research before buying a dog in the future.

He owns Pets Paradise and Pet Goods Direct. Not a nice person at all IMO.

I agree that some of the dogs look unusual ;) I also hate the way the GSD looks. Poor thing

I would love to feed Evo but can't get it in NT. I have fed it in the past and my dogs loved it and looked amazing on it. It was recommended to me for my old Dobe who had cancer and it really helped keep weight on him and kept him strong to fight the cancer for 2 yrs. I like it even more now that Gary Diamond doesn't have exclusive rights to it in Australia :)

My Dobe is DA. As a puppy he was scared of other dogs and as he matured it turned into aggression. His dam had 2 litters prior to this one and all pups have amazing temps, his litter was sired by a different dog (semen from overseas) and more than one pup from his litter has similar issues. The breeders will not be using the remainder of the semen they imported from that particular dog as they believe this is the cause of the issues in some of the pups, as do I. I am hopefully going to breed my first litter this year and temperament was a huge part of why I chose the sire I did for my bitch.

I love the coonhounds, particularly the blue tick. Also love the Afghan and Saluki, beautiful!

oh i hope so, thanks for letting me know, i'm going do some asking around next week :) did you take Simi a couple weeks after the second lot or or the 3rd booster one? It was after the second one and before the third :)
-
I took Simi to puppy school and she has only ever had a C3 so you should be right.

I groom from home so I get lots of people coming and going and without fail there is always someone who comments about how much money I could make by breeding Simi. I smile and tell them how much it costs to have her hip and elbow scored and then the stud fee and the good quality (ie expensive) food they are fed, the time I spend with all my dogs and how much I miss out on social activities because the dogs come first. Then what a c-section could cost, time off work and after all that the possibility that we end ep with no pups. I should save my breath however because their dogs breed for free with old mates dog down the road and it costs nothing! They also ask what I would have done with Simi if we got bad results on hip scores. When I said she would've been desexed and be our much loved pet for the rest of her life they look at me like I'm nuts. People also ask why I had Acheron neutered, because 'he would make beautiful puppies'. Well, he is on limited registration for starters, he lacks confidence with other dogs which has resulted in DA and is just not everything a Dobermann should be and as much as I love him I wouldn't want to pass that on to puppies. Anyone who makes a smart remark about the cost if one if Simi's pups is immediately not on the list as a potential puppy buyer. If they had done any research at all they would know what to expect price wise.

I agree that every dog and owner is different and what works for one might not work for another and that is why this particular 'trainer' immediately put me off. Not just her but Alpha Dog Training too as she was promoting herself as certified with them and using their methods. After talking to me on the phone for 5 mins and not setting eyes on me or my dog (she didn't even ask me what breed etc, I volunteered that halfway through the call as I felt it was relevant) she assured me that by not letting him on the furniture, making him sleep outside and putting a halti on him she would have him fixed in no time! I couldn't get off the phone quick enough and my husband got a 'talking to' for giving this person my phone number!

What I don't understand s how almost all blue breeders claim thy have 'champion bloodlines'? Really? Exactly which of the parents or grandparents are champions? I notice that none on the dol puppy page have any titles at all, except of course the few that don't breed blue.

Acheron is doing well. He has his issues but nothing that we can't control. He is much happier since we got Simi and has a friend to play with, although it took time for him to accept her. We have to be on lookout when we walk him as heaps of people around here don't have dogs on lead but we haven't had any incidents.
-
I still stand by my thought that by putting a halti on my 35kg working line Dobermann and walking him in circles is not going to do a thing to help with his issues with other dogs. Without the 'trainer' even seeing my dog I was told that she could 'fix' him with these methods. She also kept banging on about 'once you get him under control on the lead' despite me telling her repeatedly that he walks beautifully on lead and is very focused on me. Anyway, I did not and will not be using her services, but I'm glad it works for some.

I've mentioned before that I have a family member that breeds them and I saw their dogs for the first time in years recently and they are all bloody ugly! The male looks deformed with his huge head and shoulders. He is way oversized and the girls ( a blue and blue fawn) are a washed out looking colour and although closer to what a SBT should look like still don't look quite right. I try and change the subject when they talk about breeding as I have nothing nice to say to them about it.

Agree with Pebbles. My dogs don't get vaccinated beyond the 15 month booster and they only get a C3. I also only worm them once or twice a year and they only get treated for fleas/ticks if they have any (my youngest dog is 14 months old and has never been treated for them at all). I hate taking medication unless it is very necessary myself and feel the same about my kids and dogs. I do treat them for heart worm monthly due to the weather up here but it is a tablet for heart worm only, not multiple things.

I think the people who get hysterical over people saying they would save a dog over a child most likely have children. I am of the opinion that I would flap about in a panic. I have children and it doesn't upset me. Probably because I understand that it is a hypothetical and also a very unlikely scenario and people can't say with 100% certainty what they would do unless faced with it. I also love my dogs more than most people so understand the desire to protect them, even at the expense of others.

Second the vet. Years ago my brother dog grabbed one of the resident farm cats (they were there when we brought the property) and after a 20 min struggle we finally got her to let the cat go. I ended up in hospital due to to cat bites on my hand, my brothers dog had to go to vet due to her head swelling up like a balloon the next day and the cat barely had a mark on her!

I have to add that I'd be able to stay at BBQs or dinners out without looking at the time and having to leave long before everyone else because the dogs need to be fed, or the dogs have been alone too long!

Keen Bitch In Season Or Abnormal?
Remarkabull replied to Remarkabull's topic in General Dog Discussion
I hope it doesn't last too long, she's driving us all crazy!
