Just to add to this question: those of you who take your doggies to the beach- how do you know they will be alright going into the water when you let them off leash? I am terrified that my puppy will go nuts and bolt when he gets off leash and drown or something. Lol.

Check on Amazon or even Ebay... I've bought some really good pet related stuff from Ebay!

I am so happy to see things worked out for him. What a beautiful dog! At least he is now with someone who deserves him!
-
We ask Codi to wait for his food when we feed him and sometimes if we take too long to say "ok" he starts drooling... There's a video of it on my youtube but you can't quite see the dribble. Hehe.

Your post made me smile and laugh! The way you described your OH sounds as exactly like mine! (Except yours know a bit more about dogs!) I've always been the one in the house who's mad about dogs. I am so glad to hear that he's found a breed that "clicks"! I like all sorts of dogs... I am not sure if I've ever "clicked" but I have to say I have a real soft spot for Cavaliers as I grew up with one and my girl was just so beautiful and has a wonderful temperament. Now that I have a JS I get excited over any dog that is fluffy like him. I love Samoyds cos they are like giant versions of him and all I want to do is cuddle one!

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. Did the breeder offer any guarantees before you bought the dog? Do you have any signed documents?

Thanks for that! How handy! Anyone know any dog parks that are particularly good for puppies? (or small breeds?)

I would LOVE to have another dog... When I lived at home I had a Cavalier... Absolutely love her to bits but there was no way my family would let me have 2. Mum loves her but couldn't cope with "too many" animals in the house. I wanted to take her with me when I got married, but when we bought our house unfortunately it had no backyard at all. We decided to leave her with mum as she grew up there with a big yard and at least she would always have my mum's company. (I'm an only child, so mum would be a little lonely with me gone too!) After we settled into our new house, my husband and I decided to get a puppy. I have such a soft spots for Cavaliers but the hubby wanted something a bit more "masculine". He likes huskies-type dogs and in the end I convinced him on a Jap Spitz. Over the holidays (I'm a teacher) I had my Cavalier come and stay over our place. Because the two dogs have such a huge age difference, they tolerate each other but don't really play or hang out together. In fact, you could say that Codi gets a bit too playful and Coffee would get annoyed and just want to sleep! The thing I loved most about having the 2 of them together was walking them both together, and having them both around when I'm chilling out at home... It makes me sad that I don't have Coffee living with me all the time now but our house is just not suited to her. My husband will "let" me have another dog providing we had a bigger space. We have basically no yard (just a patio) so Codi is mainly an indoor dog. I'd like to have more than 2 but I might have to do some hardcore convincing before that would ever happen!

I must admit that I have stopped playing with him if he bites, but I have never physically walked away. Sometimes if he's on my lap when he bites I gently push him off me and stop playing... He doesn't seem to get the point though. He has never bitten me hard- it's really more just mouth to skin... But cos he's lost all his puppy teeth and his new ones are so hard sometimes it hurts cos he head butts me! Would love more suggestions on this!

I was told to yelp or ignore my dog if he puts his mouth to my hand when playing but it never really worked. He doesn't bite hard but my dog is also very mouthy and I can see how this would be a problem. He also does this when he gets really excited and tries to put his mouth to my hands. I usually pull my hands away and use a toy instead. Whilst he seems to get it, it hasn't really fixed the problem as he still likes to go for our hands when he wants to play. I also do the same as you with uh ah or no, and I get a fairly good response- though I would like to know how to stop him wanting to use his mouth on me all together. A couple of times he's jumped up and nearly gotten me in the face, and I don't ever want to have to be nervous to have him around other children/people either!

Thanks for the recommendations, I had a look at the website and although they sound fabulous I think the cost might be just a bit too much for 2 weeks... I am quite happy to take my dog wherever he will be happiest but still need to try and budget around the holiday too! Oh no, which boarding kennel did you have a bad experience with at Dural? Calabash did look very professional- but yes my experience was very similar to yours!

I just did a search and sent a PM so hopefully I hear back soon!
-
Thank you for the recommendation. I will check it out.

I haven't asked actually... Though maybe not such a bad idea. In fact I might see who she would recommend... Thanks Gretel!

Hmm I suppose I will keep looking. Not sure if we want to go with a pet sitter... My husband was a little uncomfortable with that idea. Keep the suggestions coming though! I don't know where else to look as I have never had to use a boarding kennel before!

Hey there, I would highly recommend Great Western Animal Hospital on Great Western Highway at Pendle Hill. This is our local vet and all the staff are so friendly. Our dog absolutely loves going there!
-
I normally would- but we are actually going overseas with my mum as well! My Cavalier will be with my grandparents' (She's 9 now- so she won't get up to much mischief!) but can't leave Codi there!
-
Hehehe, yes we're in Sydney! We live near Greystanes... I have been searching for other Japanese Spitzs for playdates... Surely Codi can't be a snob to his own kind? Lol. My Cavalier lives with mum in the Hills... I didn't take her when I moved out as my new house has no yard and she grew up there with a big backyard. Not to mention mum would be lonely without her. Hmm, must find out more about PAX? I was also recommended getting someone to come and house sit and mind the dog... I have to say I wasn't entirely comfortable with the idea of someone in my home for 2 weeks though?
-
HAHAHA! Well my dog is a bit of a "snob" being a Jap Spitz... He is very well socialised but just seems to not like particular dogs... (gets on well with mu Cavalier that stays at mum's and other dogs at puppy school- but HATES my friend's French Bull Dog and other Staffy breeds he has met at dog parks. :S) Tell me more about PAX?

Hi everyone, I am looking for a boarding kennel- does anyone have any recommendations? We need to place our Japanese Spitz puppy for 2 weeks over the October school holidays. Here's my experiences so far- please let me know if you have dealt with any of these places or any other place you might recommend! 1. Hanrob: We were recommended to Hanrob by our vet. I emailed them 2 months ago and never even got a reply. My husband ended up calling them and got quite a bit of information. Whilst I thought the $35 a day was quite reasonable- I was not happy that playtime etc is extra. They only include in 15 minutes as standard package and anything else after that was extra... I know they are good but it just seemed really expensive. For the amount of time we need to board Codi it took the cost up to nearly $900! 2. Calabash @ Arcadia: Heard great things about this place so I did a google search. Was quite happy that it's close to my mum's in case of emergencies. Emailed and got response straight away so made an appointment to go and see the place last Saturday. Got there at 1:30 and was in and out by 1:40. I felt like we were being rushed through and didn't really get much information other than being shown around. I was given some brochures at the end and told to call if I wanted to book. 3. Pet Resort Australia @ Dural: Don't know much about this place but came across it during my internet search. On our way home from Arcadia I gave them a call and they were happy for me to drop in. Again, quite please that it is close to my mum's. The people there were friendly and I was surprised that it was the cheapest so far of the places I found. It also included playtime and grooming. Only thing I was worried about was that there were kennels with 3- 4 dogs sharing. I was told they would try and pair my dog up and if he didn't like any of the dogs he would board on his own with no extra cost. 4. Nalla @ Luddenham: Came across this place on the internet- emailed them and got a reply about 2 days later. I just emailed back to see if I can go and see the place on the weekend and haven't heard back yet... Website looks good but not too many photos of the place. Would really appreciate anyone's input out there! Thanks!
