Perhaps it's like this with other breeds too, although I am not an expert. My girl (Cavalier) is happy to do her own thing but will come for cuddles but very independent, whereas Codi will cry and sook for me. Lol. If we did get one it would probably be a girl so that it's not too much bigger than Codi. *sigh* it will still be a long way in the future though. So clucky for another puppy!

Very interesting! I worked out it was about $1 a day to feed Codi- not including treats and things that we buy him. Which is not very expensive at all. Wow, a big difference between your boy and your girl bernym! What should be the average weight range? Do you find any differences in behaviour or temperament between male and female? OH is really warming up to the idea of getting a sammie. ;)

Hmmm I've never thought about that before. I don't know the price because we buy everything in bulk monthly.... One bag of Nutro will last them a month (and thats with the Lab eating it too and he eats quite a bit) which is about $110 for a 15 kilo bag. Various meats we get from the butcher and monthly we are looking at about $30 for the both of them. At the moment Mistral (who is about 24 kilo) is eating one cup of dry (Nutro) in the morning and just under a cup of dry at night with about 2 table spoons of mince mixed in. Allie (about 15 kilo) is getting half dry in the morning and just just over half in the evening with two spoons of mince mixed in. They also get lamb flaps, turkey necks and the odd beef bone as well. (but on the nights they get this they don't get dry food) Interesting! It doesn't sound like they eat that much more than a little dog! Codi is on about half a cup of dry food (Royal Canin) twice a day. His little 5kg bag will last him a whole month. We do buy other bits and pieces to feed him with in his diet but he's not overly expensive to feed. Lol. I always worried that with a bigger dog I would be spending heaps of money on food!

What do you feed your Samoyeds Bjelkier? How much would you say it would cost to feed a Samoyed per week on average?
-
Thanks Bjelkier. I don't know how soon in the future we might get a new house. We only purchased us a year and a half ago but I do feel that I would be more comfortable getting another dog (big or small) if we had a yard. At the moment we only have a courtyard so Codi is walked twice a day and also given lots of free runs at the local dog park. We would do the same with our next dog even if we had a bigger property. I have only ever patted a Samoyed puppy and the fur felt quite similar, though that could just be the puppy fur? How are they in terms of energy levels? We do quite a lot with Codi in terms of training to keep him mentally stimulated and I find that he never runs out of energy! When he was a puppy I was so worried because it didn't matter how tired he was, he would never sleep during the day! Lol.

OH and I looked at getting a Samoyed before we bought our house. After we bought the house we realised it was far too small for a bigger breed and we ended up getting a Japanese Spitz. We have since met quite a few Sammies at shows, and I still have a soft spot for them! So a few questions for you Sammy owners out there, because we *might* consider it for our next dog. (If we buy a bigger property!) - Do they need a lot of room to romp around in? Say if we are at work during the day? - How are they with other dogs, or in my case would a Sammy live happily with a JS? - Would their grooming be similar to a JS? Thanks very much!

When OH and I got married and moved into our new house, I was miserable for months because I left my childhood dog with my mum. (I am an only child, didn't want to take the only dog away from mum as well!) We were talking for months about getting a puppy but it was definitely me that initiated it because OH has never had a dog and I don't think he would've gotten one on his own. Although Codi is in my name, I would say that it's OUR dog. Codi is a mummy's boy and will always come to me for cuddles and unfortunately come find me if he's in trouble. Haha. OH had no idea what to expect (other than what I educated him about) and as it turns out, Codi is very different to other dogs I've had! We share responsibilities when it comes to bathing, feeding, walking and training. I probably groom Codi more but OH is always there to help as I need another set of hands! He comes with me to all training sessions and we always do things together. I think somewhere along the lines I may have turned him into a little bit of a dog nut too because he talks to Codi like I do! Hehe.

My Cavalier who is 10 has hers and we have never had problem. We have never had a problem with Codi's either- but his does look like it "sticks" out more?
-
Oh he sure loves food! A little too much I'm afraid. Lol. Haha yes those waves needed to be barked at! I laugh everytime I watch him prance away from them. Lol. TerraNik: Must play again soon, Codi LOVED having someone to run with.

Codi had his first visit to the beach yesterday. Have been meaning to take him for ages but either the weather hasn't been good enough or life just gets away from us. He had heaps of fun with his fellow JS friends (and non-JS friends! Lol) Here is a short video if anyone is interested. He was a bit of a wuss! Here are the pics!

Hehe, I just emailed. I've got all these half finished bottles of shampoo at home which I bought and not that in love with. Really appreciate your help in pointing me in the direction of good products! Just not too sure what and how much to buy really! I have a few things in mind that I really want to try out but the thought of buying more stuff that's just going to sit there puts me off! Hopefully I can get some samples from her to try! Do you use any sort of "conditioning spray" after you bath for brushing and stuff? I am also very curious about CC Ice on Ice... -

Aw thanks, that's very lovely of you! I'm half falling asleep so I'll have to have a proper look tomorrow and email her and see if I can get some samples on what I am interested in trying... Very curious about the no rinse shampoo you suggested a few posts back! -

Well I hope it's going to help get his coat back to normal. I wish I could samples somewhere. Don't want to spend a heap of money on products I may or may not like. *sigh* -

Yep.. Hmm, that's not good... Maybe I should stay away from it then... -
Yep, it will be put in a section of the yard where it's already fenced and we are looking into covers for it. Should have known you'd have all your bases covered Awesome - now to just make sure my pupsters don't see that I look after my dogs better then I look after myself. And, if I miss something, then the boyfriend will figure it out. I'm only good at looking after my dogs If you're in Sydney... you can bring doggies over for a pool party Omg, JS pool party! ;) :p

TeamSnag: What happened to your dog's coat?! I am basically after something to keep the white white, and perhaps something "gentle" to use in between that will keep him nice and fluffy. I was worried that the white shampoos would be really drying? I would also like to try Show Off for days when I can't be bothered to wash him! Lol. -
Thanks everyone. Took some more photos today with a new santa toy I bought him. Early Christmas for Codi. Hehe. And some of him in the clam shell pool this afternoon.
-
Thanks for all the awesome tips! It would be great to get to a point where we are both experienced enough to do some nice bike tracks. I just wanted to do something different with him, other than our daily walk/jog. I mean he gets lots of other stimulation too from flyball and obedience training, but this would be really great! Thanks for showing me the bike leash mish13, that looks interesting!

Codi turned 1 last month so he's a lot quicker and also stronger now. I would like to do this as more exercise for both of us. I also figured it's been YEARS since I got my bike out, and could be really fun!
-
Wow you hold your lead while you ride? I don't know if I would that co-ordinated! The area I plan on riding in is pretty flat... What did you do to teach the stop cue?
-
Thanks for that! I will check about the laws... I only intend on going on short rides around my area (We have dedicated bike paths/tracks), and obviously would only do it on a cool day! Just thought it might be fun for Codi to get up some speed!
