  1. There's a "grown up" Ruby who is yellow whose owner is often in the Lab thread- maybe that's who you were thinking of. Her username is Ruby Star, so easy to mix us up She's in Perth though. I admit to being a bit smug too when at puppy school and even at kindy on Tuesday night. Boy, I was soon made to choke on my smugness though... :D "Yes, Ruby can sit...." *Ruby pulls away and snuffles on floor* "No, really..." Then I get in trouble for pulling on the lead and saying her name too much. :D Argh.
  2. Oh she is so beautiful!!!! James and Roo need to have a music video together ... singing 'Especially for You' by Jason & Kylie!! I just had a flashback to a Bluelight disco...
  3. Still. Laughing. So. Hard. The cat has run out of the room in fright at my laughing Oh wow! The people next door (well, as next door as farms can be lol) to my brother (whose dog is Ruby's mum) breed Kelpies too. Let me think of their name...Millburn I think. This photo of Roo was taken a couple of weeks ago.
  4. I remember reading that and couldn't for the life of me work out why that person got offended! I've always thought that your posts have been well written and well thought out, especially when you are defending your position on something. It is very easy in some threads to get your head bitten off though, isn't it? Probably why I just stick to a few threads to post in only. I'm near Orange and Bathurst, so probably a bit far unfortunately ETA Lol Well, your OH is Canadian, isn't he? Maybe he could teach Elbie some French? Ooh! He could read Dostoevsky IN French!
  5. Oh God, KTB, I laughed SO much when I read this last night, and I still laugh everytime I think of it! :D You are so right though. I'm still paranoid about everything when it comes to Ruby. Here I am on school holidays (one perk of being a teacher), and although I am supposed to be working on an essay for a post grad course I'm doing (stupid decision by the way), not only am I addicted to DOL, but I keep getting up regularly to check on what Ruby is doing outside. If I can't see her, I have to call out the window to see where she is I'm about 25 mins from a dog park (none in my town, would have to go to either of the 2 bigger towns nearby), but definitely not willing to go by myself. Wish I lived in Canberra to go with you guys on here
  6. :p Lol I started puppy kindy (the next step from preschool) with Ruby last night. It's been awhile since she finished puppy preschool, probably 6 weeks, and I thought we were going okay...yep, until we got there and Ruby was distracted by EVERYTHING! Even the floor! We were shown up by a "Cavoodle"! It was only a really small class (2 other dogs and Ruby) thank goodness because God know what she would have done if there were more! I couldn't co-ordinate the bloody clicker and treat either. I think I was as exhausted as Ruby by the end of it! Poor Roo just wanted to play afterwards, but was seen as a bit of a bully I think because she was bigger than the other two and basically tried to step on their heads... ;) I want to take her to obedience after this, but I'm hoping this will help in the meantime. It's not cheap either I've been practising 'stay' tonight and 'on your mat'. I think we fluked them. More practise needed obviously.
  7. Wind Beneath My Wings? For us, we're thinking of going the agility route for Elbie because it might be more interesting for him in the long run - and us with all the variety - tunnels, beams, hoops etc. I worry about injuries in flyball and also poodlefan mentioned to me once that flyball can be quite tough on the dog - which makes sense even if the dog masters that swimmers turn thingy. Also, apparently the dogs get revved up to crazy levels of hyperactivity and barking which I do not want with Elbie because we actually want him to become a calm dog one day instead of the little tornado he is now ... Yeah, maybe I don't really want Ruby to do flyball after all...it's cool to watch though. My family used to have a Fox terrier (I think they're called Tenterfield terriers now though) called Nellie who was really fast and even won a race at a charity dog show thing. We thought she would have been good at flyball, but sadly a snake got her a few years ago  We're going to do obedience classes until gold level and then might supplement his classes with a trainer that we know in Braidwood but I doubt we'll go obedience trialling ... I suspect OH, Elbie and I would find it a bit boring just trekking around a field doing sits, drops and dumb bell throwing. Also, I'm unco - knowing my luck, I'd hit and kill a judge. :p Hee!
  8. Oh I think flyball is so cool! I've always wanted to have a dog that does it. Maybe Ruby could one day...
  9. Royal Canin Labrador (puppy) here (plus sardines, shank bones etc a couple of times a week). Advance didn't suit her, and Eukanuba wasn't much better. Have almost finished the first bag and very happy so far. Ruby eats ALL of her food now in about 2 seconds flat, which she wasn't doing before. I might change to Nutro when she is older though.
  10. This is something I've been wondering about too. Ruby (my Labrador puppy) is 5 months old tomorrow, and I was told that desexing her at around 6 months would be the best time. My worry is, what do you do with them after the operation? Ruby is outside during the day while I am at work, but inside at night. Do you mean crate them for the whole 10 days, Nekhbet? I'll be watching your thread with interest, Aussielover, and hope that Mindy's operation goes well.
  11. Poor Kuma being beaten up by your sister's pound puppy Obviously he was just humouring Bobba. The thriving metropolis that is Quirindi. My dad is still there, but we're (my siblings and I) trying to get him to move closer to us, since we worry about him being so far away and by himself (Mum passed away 10 years ago). It's not fun when your parents get older
  12. How's Kuma going in Tamworth? I imagine it would be warming up right now. I used to live there, and my hometown is not far from there.
  13. Awwww congratulations Elbie! And KTB and Mr KTB too
  14. Ruby isn't a fan of peanut butter either. She's only just (in the past couple of weeks) learnt how to use her Kong. At the moment, I've just kept it simple- biscuits, then a bit of Nature's Gift tined food. She has however, just discovered the fun that is toilet rolls. The empty ones were fine- no drama. But the other night, the little bugger snavelled a full one and ran off with it, and then just a little while ago, tried to take off with the one that was on the holder! Thankfully she didn't get very far before some tore off, and it was almost empty anyway. I'm hoping Ruby becomes more sloth like, or at least, lets me sleep in, but for now she gets walked in the morning and afternoon most days. They're not very long walks (I've read all the posts on here that warn of over-exercising large breeds and how it can lead to problems later etc etc)- only around the block and a bit, but she loves them- especially when we go past the horses that someone has in a paddock close by. Plus it gets me off my bum to do some exercise No walk this afternoon though- I mowed the lawn. Took me forever
  15. They are surprisingly determined, aren't they? Especially considering James' favourite pasttime is normally snoozing on the couch! I can just imagine little Ruby's efforts at redecorating How old is she now? Ruby is 19 weeks old tomorrow. Hard to believe in one way that I've had her almost 3 months! Then again, I can believe it- the last sleep in I had was 3 months ago! She's not really 'little' though- last Saturday she weighed 15.5 kg! I went to Bunnings on the weekend and bought some pavers to weigh down the tarp floor in her shed and block access to the ground. I hope it works. She still dragged her blankets out today, but for once it wasn't raining, so I didn't mind too much. KTB, you are so lucky that Elbie just brings you things. Ruby runs away with 'forbidden' things (socks, face cloths, hose connectors etc) and then thinks it would be delightful to play keepaways with said items. Not fun, especially in the morning when I have to go to work. I actually need to get some advice on how to train her out of that. Or at least to drop it! When I ask
  16. I agree and do what the others said for my 4 1/2 month old Labrador puppy, plus I give her a cardboard box with a few bits of lamb and kibble in it for her to snuffle/eat/destroy. Yes, it's a huge mess to come home to (today Ruby had also dragged out her bedding onto the grass)- it kind of looks as though there's been a wild party in the yard, but no big deal. Ruby also has a clamshell with sand and water to play in (not that she always chooses to dig in it... ). Something else I do is put a few bits of meat into a container and fill with half stock half water and freeze. Ruby has also only just discovered what to do with her Kong in the past couple of weeks, so I leave one out too. To be honest, I don't know who eats more- Ruby or the family of magpies that visit, but it's all gone when I get home...
  17. Oh I definitely hear you, Niques. I was dreading what I'd come home to today since for the past 2 days Ruby has been "landscaping" in her shed (read: digging up the floor. sigh. Really wish it was cemented, not just dirt floor covered with a tarp), and then yesterday dragged EVERYTHING out of her shed. I swear, if she could have, she would have dragged her kennel out too. Thankfully, I came home to a somewhat normal level of destruction- only stuff I'd left out was destroyed. I've got stupid unicourse this weekend (boo) I bought Ruby a shin bone today so hopefully that will keep her out of mischief tomorrow...Labradors! *sheakes head*
  18. I was wondering if anyone else would comment on this. I was kind of hoping that I was imagining it over the sound of my hairdryer. Sadly no Ten is definitely getting their moneys worth out of him. Wasn't he on about Steve Irwin's land being mined on 7pm the other night?
  19. Roo had RC Labrador biscuits with sardines and a dash of puppy milk. She LOVES sardines! She's loving the RC food too, which is great after being such a fusspot. I've got a shank bone here for her dinner tomorrow night.
  20. Oh Nekhbet, that is just the cutest! ;) Not sure when I'll unpack mine, but might not be til school hols. Will post a pic when I do.
  21. Well it turns out it had been sitting at the post office since the 8th! ;) I almost emailed Topbuy about it last night too. Stupid postman. The silly woman at the post office said "Well, I gave him the card. I don't know what he did with it" Yeah well, as I told her, I can't come in and collect a parcel if I don't know I've got one! Idiot. Anyway, haven't unpacked it yet. Ruby decided to do some landscaping in her shed for the second day in a row AND dragged everything out of it into her yard, so spent almost 45 mins this afternoon trying to clean it up and stop her from doing it again. Or at least stop her until I can get some big pavers on the weekend. Grrrr
