  1. our 1st dog a boxer was deaf so naturally wasn't worried then our second was also ok probably because he picked up her calmness and would actually run around chasing hailstones and running and sliding on them. It seems to have passed on to our present staffie as well,so maybe they pick up on other dogs and peoples reactions.
  2. thanks again for the replies We are actually heading to Tomakin so not far from Broulee so should expect similar. Not having ticks in our locality is a plus but also puts us behind the eight ball when we travel, we do often find blue toungues covered with ticks but these are obviously not a dog type. Our main worry around here is snakes. I havent used frontline for years as both my prev staffy and our cat reacted badly to it ,tho our boxer was fine, Im not game to try it with our new staffy, you are so lucky living down that way Im looking at moving down there myself later on.
  3. thanks for the advice would it be ok to use advantix and proban or does advantix work well enough as one of my dogs has on occasions coughed up tablets or hidden them well.also I was going to start treatment 2 days before we leave and remember something about advantix or similar being dangerous to cats,as we have an older cat which will be near the dogs at home I want to check this out, if necessary I will keep them apart. Both dogs are short haired, ticks shouldn't be difficult to locate but the internal ones would be more difficult to find.
  4. Hi Im taking the dogs to the south coast near batemans bay next march and want to be prepared for ticks. Can any one living in the area give me some advice on the types there also the best preventative if you're swimming the dogs everyday.I will be checking them each day but dont want to overdo the chemicals either.
  5. our previous staffy had this only on one joint which also tended to swell up, and it seemed to indicate she had a skin allergy coming on. We spoke to some people on the south coast with a similar prob in their girl which had a grain allergy, when ours was treated this seemed to be the last area to clear up,maybe from rubbing from sitting?
  6. Ive been told warm diluted tea works but you should also look at your dogs diet as poor quality foods with nasty ingredients can be the cause if not a medical condition.Im sure theres plenty of members with more knowledge than me here who can elaborate on this.
  7. Hi oakway In the lifecycle isnt the eggs or larvae also passed on by freshwater snails picking up the eggs from droppings in the water and passed on to sheep and cattle when either drinking or eating vegetation at waters edge ingesting the snails.Ive heard this previously and thought you might be able to confirm it. We used to rabbit hunt and often found cysts in rabbits and mostly where there were streams running through the paddocks
  8. It makes you wonder about the double standards here These dingoes are the responsibility of the national parks and are in such poor condition, food supply would be limited and a lot of the dead animals mention as being a food source would be cleaned up so as not to upset the tourists. They say its the natural way but its not. If anyone else let an animal of any description they were responsible for suffer like this, they would have the full force of the law thrown at them. Its the same with brumbies and other feral animals,I watched a doco about brumbies where thy were culling the herds when there were large healthy numbers ,but when drought hit they let them starve to death around what few waterholes were left, when they could have gone there while they were suffering and too weak to flee and ended their pain, instead they died slowly, often in the water hole putrifying any remaining water that native animals had available, maybe its because if the brumbies go so do their jobs
  9. My boxer had spindle cell removed at 12yrs, fairly long op but no problems,as long as they check out ok they should be fine.

  13. the laws in SA are that if a cat without a collar comes into my yard i can legally trap it and take it to the pound. if the cat has a collar then it must go back to its home which i have done. this procedure does not harm the cat. i contain my dog, i register her, i am a responsible dog owner. i have friends who have paid thousands of dollar to contain their cats because they are responsible cat owners. i want all cat owners to be responsible at their expense not mine. if my dog was wandering at large she would be caught and impounded, whats so wrong about doing this to a cat that enters my yard? Absolutely nothing wrong with this. You know the law and are following it. Cat owners in this situation have every opportunity to follow the law by containing their cats, as do dog owners. So, if you choose to have a cat, you choose to take on the responsibility of containing it. As I said, we all have the right and the responsibility to protect our pets and others' pets within the bounds of the law. However, currently cat containment is not the law everywhere. My only problem is in situations where cats are not required to be contained but are punished for leaving their yards, based on individual opinions. I agree its not the cats fault but it shouldn't be up to the neighbours to spend money to protect their pets and property, its like paying rates to pay for graffiti clean ups, speaking of which I've often been tempted to catch the neighbours cats and dye their coats, one bright blue, one canary yellow and one hot pink, it wouldn't harm them but would make the neighbours think about it while the colour grew out.
  14. If they can be kept OUT why can't they be kept IN ''at the owners EXPENCE'',thats like saying everyone should wear breathing apparatus so smokers can breathe their smoke indoors. Note we own a cat it stays inside or in our back yard,it can't get out by it's own devices,a lot of our neighbours didn't know we had one because it wasn't roaming around the area,I tolerate other cats and their habits but it seems lately others haven't as there seems to be less cats roaming around.I hope its because their owners have decided to take responsibillity for their pets.
  15. Will the mouse conveniently die outside my yard so my dog won't then eat the dead mouse and ingest the poison? this was just some advice for those who have to use it to prevent their dogs getting hold of it in the 1st place, is there any stats on how much poison remains active in a dead mouse and whether this is enough to harm a dog?All my neighbours have dogs and cats big and small and no reported poisonings so maybe they do have a little mouse graveyard where they go to die
  16. Just a tip for anyone who has to use rat bait near their pets use a glass jar with a screw on metal lid cut a small hole 1/2'' max in the lid and use the block type baits.the mice will eat the bait in the jar then go away to die,for further insurance place the jar behind something where your pets cant reach,I use this method in my bird aviaries and have never had a problem. Also store any excess in a larger jar or tin, again with a screw on or lockable lid,I hope this can prevent any further heartache.
  17. I agree your anxiety may be picked up by your dogs, its a shame councils don't section off leash free areas so that small dogs can have a safe retreat and get aquainted with other dogs.(maybe you can write to council) Have you thought about approaching other owners with smaller dogs and trying to arrange to meet them when other dogs aren't there. Then if this works out stay close to the gate and if larger dogs are entering ask the owners to wait while you exit, you will also find some larger dogs which are quite gentle with small dogs.
  18. could be the poodles french origin ''escargot'' I have seen some snail baits eg (Multicrop MULTIGAUARD) which contain different chemicals and are only dangerous in large amounts, ie getting hold of a full box.We use this in a fenced off vege garden. Has anyone used these and what do you think about their claims ?
  19. my boxer used to eat them but hes too slow to catch them these days, but seriously there was a story in the news earlier this year on some guy who ate a slug as a dare and he picked up some parasite which was pretty bad.
  20. The short and rather obvious answer to that it that its better to risk the life of the dog than the life of a police officer. And the other side of that coin is that a bite sure beats a bullet if you're on the receiving end. And if the dog misses its target its unlikely to kill an innocent bystander What utter rubbish. The dogs call off. They aren't deployed with a range of targets available and they aren't trained to kill anyway but to hold. When was the last time you heard of a police dog killing ANYONE? ????? I'm refering to the fact its better to use a dog than a weapon because a gun can misfire or a shot can miss and wound bystanders or other police... sorry to confuse you

  22. Tie him to a wharf at low tide with just his head above water then watch the tide rise
  23. the crazy/sad thing is that by dumping her there and getting caught on cctv he has given her an almost guaranteed chance of finding a home thru media hype, whereas hundreds of dogs that are surrendered thru the proper agencies will never.
  24. If they are definately ferals and not the neighbours I can lend you a cat trap (Im in SW Sydney also)
  25. I use a brand called Boomer from the great aussie petfood company, which I buy from a pet food supplier who home delivers. Its about $40?(not sure) for 20kg I can afford to buy the dearer brands but have found my dogs keep their condition fine with this brand, they are fed kibble at night and scotties propeak in the morning also any left overs available, plus chicken necks and fish occasionally.
