  1. Hi Iam taking the dogs(boxer and staffie) to south coast,Tomakin, and have just found out that Proban is no longer available,am thinking Advantix as an alternative but would appreciate some input from those who live in tick areas, they will be swimming each day and I am wary of Frontline as our previous Staffie reacted badly to it,tho our girl doesnt have any skin problems at all, I have them on Advocate presently,is it safe to double up medications? any advice will be greatly appreciated
  2. I used claratyne syrup for my boxer when he had multiple stings, worked well and I think it works faster than tablets I gave him a guestimate dose and another later on, there is a website (google?) that has drugs that are safe or not for animals, worth a look as some allergy reliefs contain them
  3. I wonder how much training would be required for euthanising with an injection, surely you shouldn't have to do a complete vet degree to be trained to do this, are those burdened with this at city pounds qualified vets
  4. My brother in law had a black Lab at Forster which done the same,I also remember a dog which used to bring home door matts.
  5. and moving on to stage 2 .... convincing all the fish to eat seaweed
  6. Hello all I am trying to contact Flaire Boxers in Canberra the link in their email address is not connecting, could they or any one who knows them please message me ok recieved a reply
  7. Ive owned 2 white boxers the 1st a female was deaf but learned hand signals very easily and was probably more obedient than most normal dogs, our daughters were born after wards and grew up with her and there was never a problem, she never had skin cancer and lived to 12 when she had a stroke. My 2nd was a male, he had an eye patch and perfect hearing he lived to 14 and also had no skin cancers, both were outside dogs so were in the sun when ever they chose to,as said previously the white gene comes from the original breeding and if breeders keep trying to breed flashy types then whites will still be born, there are 2 sides to this as far as deafness goes as a lot of owners cant cope with a deaf dog,but imagine the outrage if breeders were banned from breeding with dogs which bred deaf pups,as in other problems, there is no reason to euth these pups if they can be sold as pets, this is one reason I bought my 2nd as I wanted a pet only. The girl who bred him had a fallout with the boxer club because she wouldnt euth the whites, from the litter, lucky for me she didnt because he turned out to be a great and loyal dog.
  8. they will have to rewrite little red riding hood now and delete the part where the wolf is in grandma's bed wearing her nightie
  9. So why dont they also put up a list of dangerous people in the area.that would be more beneficial to the community
  10. I might volunteer our staffy at my unit, not that she will do much good, she has a hard time finding her own slobbery tennis ball in grass over 6 inches tall
  11. its not hard to run up a bill, and once you have spent so much there is the line of thought that it would be a waste if you dont take the next step. I spent 5K on our staffy just to finally get a diagnosis after the specialist went through every other test 1st,then when a tumour in the spine was found advised surgery, which I declined as there was no real chance she would come through it and have any quality of life, and also if the cancer was contained to this area,I think some specialists lay the guilt trip on owners and play them as long as they can.
  12. most recent Mac white boxer at 14yrs had a stroke but had spondylosis and had a spindle cell removed at 12,other than that enjoyed good health all his life. Cassie our 1st, 12yrs also a white boxer and also had a stroke, her arthritis was getting worse at the time and wasn't responding well so I was going to let her go soon anyway, Our youngest was Matilda SBT at 6yrs with a tumour in her spine, this was the hardest as she was still so young and healthy, then within 2 weeks she was crippled and when finally diagnosed given her wings the family dogs when I was growing up were STD dachsund at 12yrs,heart attack,/ mini schnauzer 14yrs pts old age dementia/ and 2 giant schnauzers at 10 and 12 one from cancer in the spleen and the other from bloat So all in all we have had a pretty good run of luck with our dogs and hope our present Ella, SBT grows old and grey with us
  13. Just hope they find a solution for all the discarded breeding dogs if it comes in force
  14. Our neighbours once had a noise complaint about their dog which was lodged by the woman who's cat was out at night climbing on their pergola?? we also had numerous native birds frogs and lizards living in our yard and adjoining houses until the new neighbours with the 5 roaming cats moved in,not anymore,so which animals have the right to live a peaceful life????
  15. How about Jeeves as in the butler and it sort of rhymes
  16. I was at the vets today when a girl rushed in with her dog which had just been attacked by two dogs while they were walking, her husband followed her in with blood all over his legs which I assumed was their dogs, but it was his, they were walking their dog when the others attacked she has picked up her dog but one dog has jumped and grabbed it out of her arms, when her husband has tried to rescue his dog the other has attacked him gashing his calf and leaving deep full shaped bites in his thigh. Another woman at the vets thinks these same dogs attacked another dog recently(not possitive)and not sure of the cicumstances, but in the same street and similar description. The other dogs owners to their credit came straight to the vets and were obviously distressed, but I overheard them say something about unregistered and I think they were talking about putting the attacking dogs down. This will be a sad outcome for all parties involved and will only add fuel to the debate over dangerous breeds, this will also cast a shadow over stafford owners in the area as the first description again was "staffies" This is the 1st time I have seen the results of a full on attack, and and if this was the second attack by these dogs cannot believe that the owners could let it happen again. This is what responsible owners are up against and unfortunately it seems that the authorities seem to think that its easier to make all owners suffer than to sort out the irresponsible ones.Im just thankfull there were no small children around while these dogs were roaming, maybe they were dog aggressive and the second dog was defending his mate but if there had been kids involved the result would have been worse
  17. Do you need an all wheel drive?,is fuel economy important? I was looking at cars last year 1stly at x-trails as we drove one around Tassie for two weeks and loved it but no real cargo area and a bit under powered for towing as a new boat is in the pipeline,I ended up buying a Holden Adventra AWD v6,it has massive cargo space, had the dogs in the back behind cargo barrier, back seat folded down with all the luggage, kayak on the roof and towing the boat and it went like a dream down the coast. Its brilliant on gravel roads tho not a true 4WD by a long shot, the lift up rear window is great all in all its the best all round car Ive owned and they are quite cheap to buy as well.
  18. Nowhere under the CAA does it say that vets should do in an owner to council. The vets I know, couldn't care less what breed a dog is, or might be, they are there to provide a service to their clients. The only person that can determine a dog to be of a " restricted breed or cross " is a "breed assessor". Councils can suspect a dog might be, but that is as far as their powers extend, from there they must issue a Notice Of Intent and it's the " breed assessor" who ultimately makes the decision. Owners need to register their dogs and it's up to Council to track them down and go through the process. There's no way in hell I'd hand a dog in, just because Council are running a supposed amnesty. If council wants the dogs gone, then council can do the hard work and track them down. Personal experience has shown me that if you have a dog with a decent temperament, breed assessors will pass the dog with flying colours and at worst, send you off to have a temp test. Owners are better off registering their dogs and taking their chances, rather than handing them in. To be honest, this so called " amnesty" is bullsh#t and the worst that can happen if Council thinks you have a "Pit Bull " is you get issued with an NOI, they have no powers to seize or do anything but follow the due process. Not saying it is a law and also agree that its not right, they are using scare mongering, but in the campbelltown area there are some vets who will notify council and others who will do the right thing, a young work colleague lost his pup (which he had bought as an amstaff) this way, when doing the right thing took it to the vet for desexing prior to registering, but the vet notified council who then siezed the pup,he didnt know his rights so didnt think he could get it back, this is the problem in the area where unless you know the vets and you know your dog is PB you wont take the risk. He now has a new pup and a different vet who doesn't care less. If councils do all the hard work to prove a dog is PB there is only one result for the dog, also if they dont register the dog and it ends up at the pound????
  19. Why not offer an amnesty to register and desex instead of euthanising, there are a lot of people who own these dogs who are too scared to take them to vets as they are obliged to notify council. That way if the owner wishes to comply with the rules they can get advice,I know it wont stop the others but at least will give the caring owners the chance to keep their dogs in peace till they pass on.
  20. I used joint guard for my 13yr old boxer there was some improvement, but then was advised to try seaflex joint function by our pet supply store lady who also has boxers, sounded too good to be true but it has worked great. The best thing is its in treat form so I know hes eaten it and is quite cheap in comparison to other suppliments. He also seems more alert and started playing more.
  21. we have been taking our dogs to Gary Barnesly for years and swear by him he gets customers travelling long distances to see him, his son Neil is also very good.the accupuncture works great for Mac my boxer who had a spinal stroke 18mths ago.I hope you get good results with Tia if you can get her off prednazone she will be all the better
  22. Ive never heard that about mint till now,but we planted mint in the vege garden next to the bird aviaries and we've had no mice since
  23. We had an MRI on our staffy about 2yrs ago and $1500 is about right. This was after chiro gave no improvement and condition worsened. It turned out to be a spinal tumour, which our vet advised could be the case initally. When I think back there were strange signs beforehand eg she seemed to be off her food but ate it when put up to her mouth,I think she had lost her sense of smell at that stage. The telling sign in the end was her "third eye lid"?? not retracting in one eye and pupils uneven, this was when the MRI was used and showed the tumour which was progressively disabling her. If this dog has responded to medication its a good sign so things are looking better for him, hope all goes well,
  24. I think all the poisons cause the mice to suffer as do traps (if not a clean kill). This was an article I read.I have no intention of using it,I was thinking more of whether the effects on a dog eating a mouse that has eaten this would be less than a toxic bait. Its possible that the icing sugar would dissolve after a period leaving a passable crumbly pellet of cement but my worry is whether this could cause harm to the dog.I dont get many around but when there is I have been using the Ketchall trap and gassing the mice with car exhaust which appears painless, others may disagree?
  25. seen an article today about the mice plague where a farmer actually had mice gnawing at his live pigs, any way his preventative was coating the pigs with engine oil (not for dogs perhaps) and his cost effective bait was icing sugar mixed with cement dust...any comments on this as far as the secondary poisoning subject goes???
