It's just a metal crate, non-collapsible. We hire them through dogtainers, because all of our crates are collapsible, so not airline approved. Our dogs have never been treated differently I flew to Melbourne and return with Feonix earlier this year - yes, she had to be at the airport about 90 minutes before the flight, but when I arrived I got my luggage and headed to the freight area and she was ready and waiting. I don't recall ever having to wait 2 hours before picking up a dog that I was travelling with. Of course, if you get to the freight area before the dog has been unloaded then you have to wait for the dog to arrive Absolutely not! In fact, sedation is actively discouraged because of the increased risk of dehydration and respiratory issues. I think Virgin have a weight limit too, but I can't find it on their website - I seem to remember that Feonix plus her crate were only about 1kg inside the weight cut off. Feonix weighs 40kg. I'll keep looking and see if I can find it. ETA: Found it - the weight limit is 65kg, funny I thought it was less than that. Feonix plus her crate were about 55kg, so she wasn't as close to the cut off as I remember

Oh, PHEW!!!! Thank Dog it's not cancer!
-
Hahah - so not happening! :p I'm pleased to say that she is now happily trotting out to the car (instead of having to be carried because she refused to walk), and even jumps her front feet up so that we can lift her back end in :D Today we will start shutting the back door, tomorrow running the engine, Wednesday having the car move (just up the driveway and back) - assuming that she takes each days changes ok - we will stretch out each step if needed Wednesday I will pick up some ginger tablets for her, and hopefully we will be able to do a few little up and down the road trips before Saturday Edited cause I just noticed I typed garlic tables instead of ginger tablets

Not so much a "lap" dog - she's more of a "whole body" dog, isn't she?

What ingredients should I be checking for? Yeah, I thought that after I posted it I was hoping no one would pick up on it

Oooo cool! A Deerhound! I've never had the pleasure of meeting a Deerhound before, I've just admired them from afar :D -
Thanks Lee It's a bit of a vicious circle isn't it? They get carsick, so they stress about the car, and then they get sick because they are stressed, and round and round we go! Like you, this is the first time we've had a carsick puppy - poor little love, she's such an outgoing and happy puppy, but to see her when you approach the car it just heartbreaking! I'll try some little sessions with her and Feonix in the car together, to help reinforce that the car is fun

Yep, 14 weeks and 15 kg This is why the passenger footwell isn't going to work anymore
-
Well, only because you insisted :p

Thanks guys No, she's not particularly fearful in the car - just the standard car sickness that you see in puppies. She looks miserable, drools a lot, eventually has a vomit, and then normally sleeps/dozes. Because of where we live, the car trips she has been on have been long - an hour or more - and over windy roads, unfortunately On her own in the cargo area she was crying, but not over the top. Certainly nothing like what you experienced aussielover. Every time she's been in the car we have withheld food for at least 4 hours prior. I don't think that any of our crates would actually fit in the back of the Territory, but I could put her in the back area with her mum, who loves the car, and try short trips like that. I will definitely get some ginger tablets when I go into town next week - are they a chemist item or just from the supermarket? Thanks again!

Thanks for your input aussielover We've had her in the back cargo area, although mostly when she was still with her siblings. She had part of one trip in the back cargo area on her own, but after about 10 minutes I moved her into the passenger footwell because she was upset, and that's where she's travelled since. She's now getting a bit too big to sit there though! Any time we've gone anywhere with her, OH has been driving and I've had her at my feet. I've been the vomit "catcher" each time, imagine me covered in towels and with a plastic bag in hand to catch the vomit - I have been vomited on a few times Poor love She's going to have to move to the back though, because of her size. We have a dog show in just over a week, so my plan for that is to have 2/3 of the back seats folded down, and the other back seat up. I will sit in the backseat with her on a harness on the folded down seats next to me, and tied to the cargo barrier. I really don't want to miss the show, because we are doing it for her socialisation, given that we are in such an isolated area - argh, damned if you do and damned if you don't. I won't move her into the cargo area until she is relaxed in the car, so for the forseeable future I think I will plan to sit in the backseat area with her (probably causing me to become car sick - hah!) I have some plush puppy travel well drops, I have no idea if they will help or not, but we will give them a go.

We have a 14 week old puppy who is just terrified of the car. She's an otherwise very outgoing and confident pup, but when it comes to the car she falls apart. She's been in the car 5 or 6 times, from the age of 7 weeks through until now. She does get car sick (how much of that is a stress reaction, I don't know), but hasn't had any other traumatic car events - no car accidents, being hurt, etc - just normal car sickness. She has had trips to the vet as well as trips to have play dates with one of her brothers, so not all of the car trips have been scary vet related. She has such a fear reaction that she now actually refuses to walk out to the car (in fact, she refuses to walk out the front door because it leads to the car), and has to be carried to it - this has been the case since her last car ride about a week ago. I'm wondering if anyone can suggest anything different to what we're doing, or let me know if something we are doing is counterproductive. Here is the plan at the moment: We have started feeding her meals in the car - I take her out to the car, pop her in the back with her meal, and sit with her with the back door open (Ford Territory, so back cargo area, not back seats). She is scared being taken out to the car, but happy to eat once she is there. Once she has eaten, I give her a few minutes just sitting in the car, then lift her back out of the car and encourage her to walk around (on lead) in the general vicinity of the car, then she comes back inside. I have also started giving her rescue remedy around 10 - 15 minutes before taking her out to the car. I have started taking her for little walks out in the front area, without taking her to the car - hopefully to stop her assuming that every time we go to the front door it means car. My plan would be to keep doing this, gradually advancing by feeding her in the car with the engine running, then feeding her in the car with the engine running and the back door shut, then progressing to little drives down the driveway and back (rural area, long driveway), etc Does anyone have any thoughts - anything we should be doing differently?

Awww, what a good girl Kirra is! Good luck! Hey, off topic, but can you tell me if Eastern Shore training shuts down over Christmas, and when it starts back again? We have to get back to our obedience routine ow that the litter is done. I need to get Radar into the advanced classes so that I can then put Nova in puppy/beginner classes Hey, don't worry - this ex-mainlander never used to drive more than 2 - 3 hours to a show on the mainland (unless it was a speciality)! That's why we haven't made it to any northern Tas shows yet Now, I don't think that's a really fair swap :p But, if I can throw in Neo you might have a deal! -

Just the Saturday for us, just so that Nova can get a play in baby puppy class before she gets too old It's a 2 hour drive down for us, so one day over the weekend with a puppy who is still getting carsick will do, I think! Would love to bunk with you - I don't think we will be able to fit our gazebo, so that would be great. I will bring chocolate muffins :D Be careful, I might try and swap a cute baby heeler for a naughty baby rotty :p -
Hi everyone Just wondering if any Tassie people are going to the Huonville show on the 12th? We will be there with Nova, just for a fun day to give her some socialisation and ring experience while she is still a baby. Anyone interested in catching up for Rotty puppy cuddles? We've only been to a handful of shows since we moved down here, so we are still very much finding our feet and don't know many people yet. We would love to meet some more people and their dogs Edited cause apparently I can't spell "Who's" properly

Do You Cut Your Dogs Nails?
Allerzeit replied to aussielover's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Some we do, some don't need it. Feonix's nails grow like nothing I've ever seen before and I'm constantly struggling to keep them under control. I've never had to cut Radar's, Neo's or Molly's nails. I used to have to cut Enya's all the time. Nova, well she is still getting weekly puppy trims, we will have to see how she goes as an adult, but I hope she takes after her Uncle Radar and not after her mother!! -
For sure!

Crap! Friggen not fair! Where did you go for Gomez's herbal stuff? I can certainly recommend Robert McDowell, http://herbal-treatments.com/dog-cancer/ - I have no doubt that his treatments helped maintain Stewie's quality of life all those years ago. I've never done chemo on a dog before, but I have heard the same - that dogs don't normally get sick like people, but Robert McDowell has a chemo support treatment as well to help minimise side effects. Lots of for you Shek, this is totally not what I ever wanted to read.

Even better are the text messages that just say "how much?"
-
By and large, I don't think it's an issue with not wanting people to ask - it's how they ask. Most breeders get lots of emails that basically consist of: "How much and what do you have available" No hello, how are you, no name, no sign off - just a single sentence. Asking how much in that manner is just plain rude, and that's what gets up most breeders noses. I have zero problem with people asking price in their first email, provided the email is polite. I would also hope that people would not only ask for the price, but also introduce themselves a bit. Regardless of if people ask price or not, I always give the price as a part of my standard first response. But if you send me a rude email demanding price and availability without a hello, please, thankyou, or kiss my bum, then you will just be told that there is nothing available.

If you were concerned about it from a cosmetic point of view, then you could try taping the ear - perhaps have a talk to your breeder about how to tape ears that fold during teething. I have a document that we give to puppy buyers that explains how we tape our puppies ears if you want to try that, but with our method it's really better if you can have someone show you how to tape the first time, because although the way we tape ears is really simple in practice, it sounds a bit confusing when just written down There are also various other ear taping methods around, maybe some other people will pop in here and share the methods they use
