I have the same problem. While I do all training with Akira, she won't listen to me like she listens to OH. Very annoying! My success today is that Akira has spent the day following around my Dad like he's her favourite person. For everyone else, this wouldn't be exciting, but Akira is afraid of men, and because my dad is a big man she's always been afraid of him. So for him to have broken the ice with her is VERY exciting.

Aaaawwww poor Nandi Hope she's feeling better soon. By now she's probably jumping around and your trying to keep her quiet It's amazing how quickly they bounce back. Akira was impossible to keep quiet. She bounced around like a looney and I was constantly trying to calm her down.

That's a great description Armahani. And it's pretty true - both Ker's Sinikka and Lappiemum's Tasha have come up to me fairly confident with big smiles on their faces and just collapsed on the floor for belly rubs. That's definitely submissive (Akira would never do that) but not timid.

It's looking like we should make it on Sunday. Probably won't know 100% until an hour before though.

When we first got Akira, she'd have accidents in the middle of the night - always in the kitchen, which was fairly easy to clean up. To make it easier, we got some puppy pads but she'd pull them around as well. So to combat that, we taped them to the floor. However, she decided to poo/wee AROUND the pad rather than on it, so we gave that up. As she got a bit older, she got a kennel, and then started sleeping outside, so it was no longer too much of a problem.

I love your photo of Maverick, it's such a good photo. He's a beautiful boy. Here's my photo of Akira: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=7200...id=177830156207 -
Oh that's horrible. I hope they catch them, or at least find the puppies.

Award For Biggest Idiot Goes Toooooooo.........
whiskedaway replied to lovemesideways's topic in General Dog Discussion
Akira will snap and bark at any dog which tries to mount her, and I have warned people not to let their humping dog near her because she will tell them off. Yet there's been a few times where she has told another dog off and I've been told that my dog is aggressive. Idiots. -
What part of SA are you in? I have a very naughty puppy who often forgets how big she is, so I wouldn't suggest her, but there are a few of us around who have calmer dogs who might help. Plus there are DOL meetups, which are great for socialisation.

Akira was the same. She was groggy the first day after her op, but after that she was running around like a looney and was impossible to keep quiet. She even jumped on my car bonnet with stitches! We checked her stitches every day to make sure they were fine and made sure she didn't get them wet and it was all good.

Kids Will Learn How To Handle Dogs In School
whiskedaway replied to Animal House's topic in In The News
I think this is a fantastic idea and I agree with the professor that dogs should be allowed in shops. First off, it'd help us to socialise our dogs to different situations, and secondly it'd help people to learn how to behave around a dog and for children to learn if they don't have a dog at home. -
Not sure if we're coming yet, we're going away to my parents shack Friday night and depending on how Akira behaves while we're up there, we may or may not be at the meet.

I've been lazy and haven't posted photos from the last few weeks, so here they are. Week 36: Week 37: (Absolutely disgusting, huh?) Week 38: Akira has discovered the joys of sitting in OH's truck this week and being able to be above everyone else.

I'm not so sure. I own a seven month old Husky who is still a big puppy and definitely no where near "grown up". I can't see her outgrowing being a puppy for quite a while. Sure, she's more mature than some dogs of the same age (thinking in particular of a GSD in our obedience class) but there are others that I'd consider more grown up, like a SWF in our class.

Why Do People Want To Breed Their Pet Dog?
whiskedaway replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
We get asked so often why we got "such a beautiful purebred dog" desexed and my reply is always that she was an accident and so why would I give her the chance of having accidents? She's a pet, not a breeding dog. -
I'll be there after obedience. We go from 10:30-11:15, so I'll be a bit late.

Dr. Chris Brown On 7pm Project Tuesday Night...

Fantastic piece. If anyone finds it online anywhere, I defintely want to link to it on my Facebook. -
Awww, poor Pele. I hope she's feeling better real soon. It sucks when they're sick and can't tell you what's wrong, doesn't it? Yay, Ker, I'm looking forward to meeting Snik. Watch out Adelaide, the Spitzers are growing in numbers.

Walking My Dog But Surrounding Dog Not On Leash
whiskedaway replied to giraffez's topic in General Dog Discussion
Accidents unfortunately happen, and the fact that the owners were running to catch him makes me think that this was an accident. We had one ourselves yesterday where OH wasn't quite quick enough with the gate and Akira raced out of the yard towards the main road. Gave us both a heart attack and I thought she was going to get hit by a car. Thank goodness OH ran his heart out and cut her off before she got there. I would put myself between my dog and the other dog and keep them apart. Dogs are more likely to attack another dog than another human. I'd never pick up a smaller dog though because that's the best way to start a problem. -
You'd better be there Ker! I want to give Sinnika BIG hugs!

Beautiful site! My only criticism is how the links change to red when you click them. It doesn't match. That said, I'm a web-design snob, so I'm probably the only person who's picked it. Beautiful photos though and so easy to navigate.
-
Aww, I didn't take any photos yesterday. I was too busy looking at things and holding onto Akira who wanted to say hi to all the other dogs.
-
Not that I know of. At the Dogs SA Open Day they had a "Find Harry" stall, and we were all given fliers and asked to letterbox drop them. Hopefully they find him. :p

We ended up with two of those frisbees. Of course, Akira has no clue what to do with it. Pele's tricks were awesome. And yeah, we were a bit shocked at how small it was. We probably did about three laps of the circle throughout the day. I was a bit disappointed there was no Spitz stands at all, though we bumped into a few Husky owners which was nice. As a breed (or group of breeds :p) we were a bit under represented.
