Neighbour's Dog Barking At My Puppy
whiskedaway replied to whiskedaway's topic in General Dog Discussion
The fence is actually 7 foot high (having a Husky, it needs to be high!) and goes down two inches below the pavers, so it's actually a fairly good fence. It unfortunately just that we're close together. Thankfully we are always home when this dog is here due to the fact that he's only here on the weekend, and Halo's puppy pen is being set up inside when we're not home, or on the grassed area which is the opposite side of the yard. I haven't let Akira near him since they met the last time (they've only met twice, the first time was through the pool fence that keeps Akira from getting out of the yard when the roller-door is up and he only barked at her, the second time was in the same yard and when he snapped at her) and I said to the OH that I never wanted him near my dogs again. And yes, I am certain that it's the issue with Casey that's causing issues with other dogs of similar breed. I think we'll organise some temp fencing so that Akira can't go near the side fence when he's at their house, and if I need to keep my girls inside when he's over I'll just have to do that. I don't want to get on my neighbour's bad side because of the fact that we have a new puppy coming that they'll have to put up with some noise from at times (which they've already said is fine). -
Neighbour's Dog Barking At My Puppy

Unfortunately I need my puppy pen. I have a lappie pup joining us soon and the puppy pen is to keep her in when I can't watch her. Might think about building another fence. My yard isn't very wide though so it'd cut the size down immensely, though I suppose it's only temporary and for one weekend a fortnight. -
Neighbour's Dog Barking At My Puppy

Just resurrecting this old thread for some more advice. Still having problems with the SWF next door. He's still only there one weekend a fortnight (this is the weekend he's here) and I think it must be that she's growing up (she's now 10 months old, and was 6 months at the time of posting the thread), but she's stopped barking back at Casey. We've moved the kennel to the opposite fence line (turns out it doesn't get wet there either) and the barbeque is now where the kennel used to be. However, the instant Akira goes anywhere near the fence, Casey launches himself at it aggressively and starts barking and growling at her. She of course thinks it's a game and races up and down the fenceline, making no noise but getting him going. I have to bring her inside to get him to stop barking because the owners won't bring him in. We've had them meet up a couple of times, but I've found that Casey is extremely fear aggressive (not sure I blame him for being afraid, she's a lot bigger and has typical Husky exuberance) and Akira is now unable to play nicely with any other SWF because I think she's afraid as well and tries to dominate the dog before it can do the same thing as Casey does. Any other ideas of what I can do to get this to stop? Do I just have to lock her inside the whole time he's here? I thought about putting up the puppy pen to block off the fence from her reach, but she easily jumps over it. And how do I get her to play nicely with SWF dogs now? -
Haha, it is SOOOOOOOOOOOO yummy. My friends and I used to have them as a main meal because they're HUGE, but both OH and I find they're too rich to eat a full one so we go halves.

That one is the Kinder Surprise Pizza. So it's a pizza base with Kinder Bueno and custard cooked on and chocolate sauce, then three scoops of gelati and a Kinder Surprise on top. Then chocolate sauce and strawberries around the outside. They used to have huge chocolate shards from the edge of the pizza base to the top of the icecream on them but they didn't last night for some reason.

That water shot is amazing CC! And I love the birds, LL! Here's yesterday's: And here's the one that nearly made it: We went to Fellini's for a friend's birthday, and they do the most amazing dessert pizzas. OH and I always go halves in a fullsize pizza for dinner and then halves in a dessert pizza. They're amazing!

And The Destructo-puppy Winner Issssss...

This was a bed as well - one of Akira's many destructive moments. Oh and this photo was taken before she chewed the sides of the kennel. At the moment, her favourite thing is toilet paper, and she has worked out how to open the door to the downstairs bathroom so she can steal it and TP the yard. I have a feeling Halo will be just as bad. -
Can Dogs Have Learning Disabilities?
whiskedaway replied to corvus's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I have one of those too, the redoubtable Lucy, whose cartoon portrait is in my avatar. Enough to break the will of most instructors. She does the famous "tune out" PF mentions, will roll on her back when she has had enough and wave her paws in the air. It is certainly not because she can't learn. My dog's the same. Instructor goes "You're not being tough enough on her!" so takes her from me to show how tough I should be, and guess what, Akira refuses to do it for her as well. Instructor hands her back. "You haven't trained her well enough, she only sits because you've stopped. Go back to the beginning and make sure she sits when you say sit." Isn't the point of obedience training to get an automatic sit when you stop and give the dog no other commands? And I'm pretty sure she sits when I say sit when she's not bored. The length of a lesson is far too long for Akira, she tunes out after the first 15-20 minutes on a good day, and the first 5 on a bad day. :D -
Thanks. She was actually doing a beg which is why she was focused (we were training), but the photo made it look like a hug because she put her paws in the air.

Zenith that's a lovely shot. And Huga, your little boy is soooooooo cute! Not a particularly good one today, but I quite like it just because it's captured Akira's personality a bit. Got home from work to find a wet and dirty pup and of course, what does she want to do? Jump all over me.

Aww Texas is gorgeous! And that rose looks fantastic. Not a particularly good one today, but I quite like it just because it's captured Akira's personality a bit. Got home from work to find a wet and dirty pup and of course, what does she want to do? Jump all over me.

Waiting For A Puppy This Thread Is For You

Sounds too impulsive to me. It could be done though. Being on DOL is certainly redeeming. I had a red cat once. Do you have to be so nasty? Sometimes people know what breed they want and are waiting for a litter, and then someone pulls out of a breeder's waiting list and the puppy goes to the next person who thought they weren't going to be getting a puppy. That's not impulsive at all and happens all the time. Gosh, four weeks wait is an eternity to those who'd decide that morning they want a puppy and go to a pet shop. I don't think you're being impulsive at all, Toolz, sounds like you've been thinking about it for a while. Good luck with your new pup in the show ring! And pictures please! -

Why Do You Like The Kinds Of Dogs You Do?
whiskedaway replied to corvus's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't like small dogs and when we got Akira, I wanted a dog that was medium sized, active (I love taking her for walks and throwing the ball for her even though I'm not exactly athletic myself) and I wanted a dog that was smart. Akira's a little too smart at times, but she's definitely everything else. I love the fact that she's really independent - when I was studying, she'd go and do her own thing and it was wonderful. She's pretty stubborn, and this is challenging for me (probably because I'm also pretty stubborn too) but when she's switched on she is SWITCHED ON and picks up things so quickly. I like it that she doesn't need to be near me all day every day - she follows me around, but it's at a distance, though there will be times when I'm making dinner that she's sitting on my feet, but I think that's food related, not me related. Sometimes though I do wish that she was a little more cuddly, especially at night when she goes outside and does her own thing while we're watching TV. We chose to get a lappie as our second dog because we love the Spitz temperament (I don't think I'll ever have a dog other than a Spitz again) and because Akira gets along extremely well with lappies. I like that they're a little more laid back than Sibes as well - I don't know that we'll ever have two Sibes at once, because I don't think we'd cope. Akira can be challenging enough as it is. Plus I like that they actually don't mind cuddles sometimes. -
Our Husky is 10 months and we only got a crate about two months ago. She was happy to go in it from the start, though the first couple of times we shut it she wasn't quite so happy and whined a bit. I gave her treats in there (chews and bones) as well as toys and that helped heaps. We have been extremely lucky with how well she took to it, though.

Akira has some pretty funny faces. "You're a mean Mum" "I'm so happy!" "What's this?" "I'm so tired" "I didn't do it"

How Many Dogs Do You Own? What Types? What Matches?
whiskedaway replied to zizzi's topic in General Dog Discussion
Vizslas are better as they get older, but they're pretty active as puppies (or at least ours were). Very trainable though. Ours loved nothing more than chasing a ball (we knew the bitch was sick when she wouldn't chase a ball the day she was PTS), but were most definitely family dogs who loved nothing more than being with their families. -

Glad to hear she's settling in well Parrotpea! -
me either... OH and I were talking about it today and we said we never would as well. Our dogs are part of the family.

I should have said, the trophies behind are OH's, and the coloured trophy is mine from when I was 12. I'm not exactly athletic. ;) This was the best representation of success I could find. But I hope he's proud in other ways.

Love the watering can, Kirislin! Day 11: Success It's the anniversary of my dad's death today, and I always hope he's proud of me. ETA: a trophy was the best symbolism of success I could find, I'm not exactly athletic so this is pretty old.

Oooh is that dinner Nik? Looks yum. ;) Day 11: Success It's the anniversary of my dad's death today, and I always hope he's proud of me.

Maybe the wildlife aren't affected as much because koalas can get up trees and kangaroos can easily jump over fences to higher ground (there were always stacks of kangaroos that got over the fences in the paddocks near my parent's place). Not sure about wombats, etc, but you don't see quite as many of them.
