My Dog Aggressive Shepherd.....
Shakti replied to Griffo's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Excellent work Rachelle!! It is so great to hear that your lovely dog can now start living a much happier stress-free life - yay for you!! Steve is the best but a teacher can only impart as much as a student is willing to learn so hats off!!!...to all three of you! -
He was put on a course of cortisone for a pollen allergy which left him raw in places due to the constant scratching and smelling horribly of yeast. He had previously been booked in for neutering and I didnt think (and the vet didnt say) I would have been better off waiting till the treatment was finished before going ahead with his desexing - stupid me!! Hope is great and no longer all lumpy-looking!! She looks pretty gorgeous though i say so myself!!
-
Hi erny, thanks for your inquiry! They are not going to do any bloodtests until after Ben is off the course of cortisone he is on so we will probably be looking at another fortnight or so but i will keep you posted. Thanks again for thinking of us

Thnak you to all those who inquired about Ben. he is still now at 7:02 pm a bit wobbley but is certainly much better and is eating and drinking well. He can't corner properly and his co-ordination is still a bit *the morning after-ish* but he is certainly on the mend. The thyroid conditions you describe Myska all fot Ben apart from the sluggishness - he is hyper-alert and boucy but everything else does sound like him ;)
-
I have had several dogs neuterd over the past twenty years but thi sis by far the slowest recovery I have ever seen. His gums are pink and the vet did test his heartbeat before we left. The Japanese Chin *weighing under 2kg* is snuffling about optimistically looking for his dinner. Ben still can't stand without support and is basically just sleeping still.
-
Dear Jodie and toohey, Thank you both very much for your kind nad thoughtful replies. He is still out like a light poor buy and I feel really sorry for him. Will see how he goes tomorrow I guess
-
Ben (GSD weighing 32 kgs ahed 18months) was neutered today, The vet said he took an unusually long time to come round and he is still extraordinarily groggy. Can't walk at all and after I carried him upstairs he has gone straight back to sleep on his bed. The vet says he wants to do thyroid tests in about ten days time but I am not sure...is a slow recovery time indicative of thyroid issues? Wouldn't there usually be some other indications of trouble with a thyroid before this??

These are all great suggestions! I will contact each of you offlist personally but thanks so much for all the suggestions! Fotr those who wondered, he is on a BARF diet and has been since puppyhood. We also have a Leonberger, a BullMastiff cross Ridgeback and a Japanese Chin

My GSD Ben who is now 18 months old is very smart, very affectionate and eminently trainable. The problem is definitely MINE. He just NEVER relaxes or mellows out. This week he has had an hour walk EVERY day up hills etc which has left our Bull Mastiff exhausted, a half day swimming and playing Frisbee at the beach, one night at Agility and TWO different obedience classes and he is still running about the backyard finding things to play *fetch* with. Yes, we do have a crate for him but I feel cruel putting him in it for no reason ie he is not tired, we are at home etc etc. Even if he does nap he is instantly fully awake and alert at the slightest noise. He is not aggressive or yappy etc. (Just plain exhausting to be around!!) He is, I think, underweight - if he was a human he would be a Type A caffiene and nicotine addict! A friend said the best thing would be to teach him LONG downs ie 20-40 minutes where he does not break it until I return to him - any thoughts?????? I swear even our three other dogs are beginning to avoid him! LOL

Hi Steve - glad the Perth weekend went so well. Just hoping you have received my email as I am having problems with westnet????

I cannot find a Tracking group or a tracking guru near enough to my home to help me so I am looking at training this on my own. Can anyone please recommend any DVDs /books or Videos that will be of help to me?

Thank you to Flame-s daddy and Jbbb for organising last night (and for the great directions I wish I had read!!) The dinner was wonderful and much appreciated. What a great group of dogs and DOLers. My friend Karen is going to go back to NZ and spread the word re the Lord Of The Drives so we will soon be part of an International Clique!! As for K9Force - I need to sharpen up my retention skills as there is just so much advice and knowledge imparted that I always go home with my mind reeling. Seeing Ben actually learning while in drive so fast and happily was just great and I promise I will get my footskills better so i can keep up with him. Thanks so much for another great night, guys and I have a newly developed soft spot for Baby Dobies! Anyone who has the opportunity to attend one of K9Force's nights GO TO IT!! It will increase your understanding of your dog and ultimately hugely benefit your relationship which is what we all want (Your relationship with your dog I mean!!) Altho some of K9's advice is definitely transferable to kids...... -
Another Question For The 'lord Of The Drives"!
Shakti replied to wyvernblade's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Can pack drive be used as a training tool and if so how? What increases pack drive? I can't wait for tonight! Have a list of questions that I think are probably too stupid to post here! LOL -

1st Try At Drive Training - Wow!
Shakti replied to J...'s topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Question please - Ben is now very focused on me at training at the Club but when everyone else is shoving food *treats* into their dogs mouths should I a) let him have a quick game of tug with his prey item or b) release him and let him chase it once or what?? -

Yeah - I want to change my first answer to what Flames Daddy wrote - that sounds like EXACTLY what I need to do more of with Ben! BTW Ben says Male GSDs and Female Dobes are way the cutest!! (but he may be biased!!) -

Nah I recognise the legs - K9Force's are more....distinctive LOL ...... ....... more old scars from teaching in Drive when his reflexes were not as fast as they are today!! -
Oh God, I am so very sorry. You gave Lane a great life which should have carried on for many, many more years. I am sorry for your loss but glad that Lane lived a life most dogs (sadly) will never know.

I would love some more information on drive training and also maybe how to keep a pack of dogs more human-focussed than dog-focussed??? Friday is probably the better option for me but I will be there no matter what!! LOL
