few thank you. I thought so, but just thought I would ask to make sure. I think I will take him for a walk tomorrow to the vet to get them to confirm and note it down on his records, thanks again.

My puppy had his last C5 vaccine 1 week ago. I noticed while bathing him tonight that he has a big hard lump, maybe the size of a 10 cent piece, around the injection site. He has a thick long wavy coat, so not sure exactly where the needle went in, but I was there when they did it and it was around that area. Do you think this could be a slight reaction to the needle? I'm not sure if I should take him to the vet tomorrow or to see what happens with it over a few days. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Sorry forgot to add, it causes him no discomfort. Just a flat hard mass the size of a 10 cent piece just under the skin, above his shoulder. ?????????????

Trying A Chicken Free Diet To Stop Itchy Dry Skin
meluchja replied to meluchja's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thank you everyone. I thought the same thing about the grains myself. I have a bag of grainfree Salmon kibble coming, I only bought a 2.2kg to see if he like it. I personally don't like the idea of feeding him grains anyway. I used to have him on a barf only diet, it did help his skin, but didn't stop it. I will let you all know how I get on with everything. I'm definitely going to give the derm. specialist a go, and see what they say. In the mean time I'm going to try the Malesb shampoo with a Alpha Kerri Oil rinse and see how that goes. Thank you again to everyone that has helped and offered their advice, greatly apprecitated. -

I'm still hoping this might be enough for my boy, I'm glad it is working for you. -
Trying A Chicken Free Diet To Stop Itchy Dry Skin
meluchja replied to meluchja's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thank you for this, I might take him to see the derm guy and see what he has to say about his skin. I find a lot of conflicting advice on here. But I guess it just proves that all dogs are different. I don't think there's any conflicting advice. Just people who actually have had allergic dogs for a long time trying to help you not waste your money on something that's not going to give you clear indication. Go for the Derm It is conflicting, what is the cause for one, isn't the other, what works for one doesn't the other etc. Thats what I meant. All dogs are different, which is why maybe my vet thinks it could be chix only, who knows. But I will try and get into to see Mike at QLD specialist vets next week. Thank you all again for your advise and help it's all greatly appreciated. -

Trying A Chicken Free Diet To Stop Itchy Dry Skin
meluchja replied to meluchja's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thank you everyone, I might keep going with this, and if there is no difference after 2 weeks (I know it should be 6-8 weeks) but from what most people have said, I should see SOME difference in 2 weeks. If there is no difference at all then I might take him to see a derm. Does anyone recommend a good one in Brisbane? -
Trying A Chicken Free Diet To Stop Itchy Dry Skin
meluchja replied to meluchja's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thank you both of you for advice, greatly appreciated. So, which ever way one decides to go, how long do you think it would be until you see some improvements? ie. scratching. Couple of days? Couple of weeks? -
Trying A Chicken Free Diet To Stop Itchy Dry Skin
meluchja replied to meluchja's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I don't think it is as much an Elimination diet, but more of a restriction to see if she sees improvement. She isn't sure it is chicken, but since chicken has a high rate of causing skin irritations, I guess she thought it might be a good place to start. Oh and the EP is preservative free, and has only natural ingredients. And they do a lamb flavour I think, so if the fish doesn't work I will try the lamb I think. CD, 2 weeks. Thanks. So a few days is a little to eager Thought so, thanks. -
My vet told me to try a chicken free diet for our puppy, to see if it stops him scratching and improve his dry skin. I have started him on the EP Anchovy, Sardine and Salmon kibble and instead of feeding with raw chicken I have been feeding it with either sardines or roo mixture. So I know I should keep him on it for 6 weeks to see the full effects. But I'm curious, how early or how long can it be until I notice improvement (if any)? A few days, couple of weeks etc?
-
Thanks. Yes he does scratch some, not as bad as he used to though before I put him onto Raw. His skin was really dry, hopefully it just continues to get better and better, well fingers crossed anyway.

He is only 4 months old. I have decided to skip the premade raw. And go with my own kangaroo mice, with lamb and lamb heart combo, (raw or cooked). Feed with the HS Anchovy, Sardine and Salmon. I also have a OMEGA 3, 6, 9 oil that I might add to it, trial this for 6 weeks and see what result we get. Thanks you all for your input. Mas, I hope your beautiful dog sees some improvement soon. My dog also has skin issues, I tried the EP Anchovy and Sardines etc, bottom line was that it made little difference, I am now seeing a dermatologist and we are now on roo and sweet potato elimination diet for 6 weeks, at the end of that I will then add each meat back in and see if he scratches and gets raw paws again. Best advice I can give you is see a dermatologist because they have the latest research and can guide you through a proper elimination diet. Oh I hope you find the answer to your dogs itching condition. I'm not sure my dog has a reaction as bad as that, he just has bad dandraff, scratching etc. Maybe that's why my vet thinks it could be the chicken, not sure Yip my dog had dandruff too, I now give him 5 fish oil caps a day, helps heaps, no more dandruff now. Beef and chicken are the most common meats a dog can react to, I would cut out both for now and see if it helps How old is your dog?

I don't make the barf myself, it's a pre made one. It's got great ingredients and I can get it for 3.80 a kg. So not sure that would work. I emailed them last night, about maybe being able to swap what I have left of the combo white over for the roo, beef or boar one. So fingers crossed I can maybe try that. If not looks like it might be a combo of canned, sardines and veal, lamb or roo mince.

That's interesting from their website, I can't see a roo one, and to be honest I didn't even look at the beef one I emailed them when I first started to feed raw asking about which would best for a dry, itchy skin dog, and they said their combo white, turkey or duck one, as red meat can stir up skin allergies. Have you heard this? Maybe this could be option. I'll ask my vet first of course though. Thanks heaps

Thanks for your input, though I'm not sure if you were giving advice about what how to feed a raw diet, or criticising my parenting skills. :) Of course cleaing his bowl is what I aim to do, but sometimes I don't get to it in time, that's just the way it is. I don't have time to sit and watch him eat, then pounce when he has finished. That's why I think Raw might not be the best option for my family, not just my dog, I'm not willing to risk my childs health. So that is the problem.

Hi, My vet has advised me to take all Chicken out of my boys diet (skin issues). I was feeding him only on a raw diet. But I now have him on a EP Anchovy, Sardine and Salmon in the moring and I wanted to still give him raw in the evening, but the current Canine Country Combo white pre mix has chix in it. I would really like to feed my boy something other than just kibble. I don't really like the idea of canned foods. But I'm not sure about raw now either. (long story but I'm worried about my children with food poisening etc) and I wouldn't know where to start with making my own suitable for him. So, what are my options? Anyone have any ideas. I was thinking maybe just the plain kibble in the morning, and kibble with sardines or eggs in the evening. But that also gets me thinking, eggs come from chickens so would that be o.k? As you can probably see, I need so help Oh I also have about 8kg of the combo white in my freezer if anyone is interested in buying it off me Not sure if I'm allowed to say that, sorry if I can't.

Ummm that's interesting, either that or he made a big boo boo I'm curious, was it the Lamb and Rice formula he recommened for your JRT? I asked my vet about this one, and she said it would be better but it still has some chix in it so probably best to avoid for my boy. How long has your JRT been on the Nutro? Have you found it is good? I hope it has been good for him. If the EP does no good, I'm not sure which kibble I'll try. I'm thinking once my Raw runs out, I might start using the Nutro Lamb canned food to add to his kibble some days, and eggs, sardines the others, just to give him some variety. I would love to be able to keep him on Raw, but I caught my 3 year old boy (human boy that is ) playing with his food bowl. I know nothing was in it, but I just couldn't risk either of my children getting sick. So I guess Raw isn't for every dog either.

Grain Free Dog Food In Australia
meluchja replied to viddles's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I agree totally. Very well sad. Not only about what you feed your dogs, but also what type of dog you choose, purebred, crossbred, pedigree whatever or which ever. I wish people would just respect other people opinions or choices and leave it at that. Great post you made :p -
Well, I tried it and it seems its not for my little boy. He started to get a red rash on his tummy, and I showed our vet today while we were there getting his 16 week shot. And she said to eliminate all Chix from his diet and to feed a kibble based of fish. So, I took back the Nutro as it was Chix and Rice, and got the EP Holistic Select Anchovy, Sardine and Salmon one. Hopefully he does better on this one. He loves the taste, but will see how the rash is over the next few days. I would have really have like to feed him an australian made product, but I guess what is best for him is the most important thing.
-
That's what I reckon. One type might look better on paper, but might not work best for your doggy. That's why I thought I would start with the Nutro and it's a little cheaper, then go from there. I would really really like to put my boy on Canidae Grain Free All Life Stage, but I wouldn't go through the 13.6kg before the shelf life ran out, and the smaller bags are just too expensive for us. But I have read some really good stuff about the Nutro, and I can get it from a local store, rather than having to order it from Melbourne and have it delivered. Oh one more thing I have found, look at the serving suggestion for your dog, some might be cheaper by the bag to buy, but you have to feed more, so it works out more expensive per meal. But again, what ever works best is best I think

I can get a 15kg bag of Nutro Adult Chix formula for $98.
-
Wow some great stories here, thank you everyone for sharing. I'm really really glad I bough this one. Fingers crossed my boy loves it.
-
Thank you so much. I'm really glad I have choosen this one. I have been tossing up between the EPH, Canidae, Artemis and the Nutro for a few days now. Comparing prices, ingredients lists, nutritional analysis and like you I thought the others looked better in writing, but I really wanted to go with an australian made product, and when I saw the Nutro for buy one get one free today, it made my decision for me. I'm really glad to hear others dogs are doing really really well on it. Thanks heaps and I hope your dogs continue to thrive
-
Wow, that is great your dogs are doing so well, I hope my boy does just as good. I got it at a great price today, buy one 3kg bag get one free. So I bought 2 lots (12kg) at that price I thought if he didn't like it, I could take it back. Do you mind me asking how his stools are one it? I have read they are smaller and firmer, he is currently feed a full raw diet, and his poos are firm, not much smell to them and small, and I'm hoping if I feed him both the raw and the Nutro ( nutro for brekky and raw for dinner), that this might stay the same. Once again, so glad to hear your dogs are doing really well on Nutro, it's always good to hear
