Which Dry Dogfood Does Your Dog Like Best?
halfthewords replied to Stitch's topic in General Dog Discussion
Carl's favourite is easily Nutro, the chicken one. I don't feed him dry food too often. Mischa loves Science Diet because the biscuits are huge and take her a while to get through. -
Roo Meat - Where To Get It In Sydney Area?
halfthewords replied to UltimatePup's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Ditto poster above. It comes in 1kg bags and lasts my mutts for a week or so. I just buy a tin of mackeral for my fussy Min Pin girl. :p -
I like Cesar and I found that episode HILARIOUS. South Park is one of my favourite shows!

Your Expectations/rules For Pooch On A Walk.
halfthewords replied to BC Love's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It's not uncommon for me to walk all 4 of our dogs at once. All I ask of them is that they stay on their designated side (usually 2 on either one), don't pull and stay next to or behind me. They are allowed to sniff at random intervals when I stop, as I don't like the idea of them walking with a full bladder. Plus they know that when they're allowed to sniff it's a good idea to empty their bowels/bladders as they don't know when they'll get the next chance. I always get asked how I keep four dogs under control and heeling, but they've never misbehaved on walks and I think the arrangement is pretty fair! None are big pullers or car chasers but if we see a cat I sometimes have to maneuver them around. ;) We go to an offleash area on just about every walk, so they know that good walking = reward at the end. -
I'll always have a Min Pin, I think. If you understand the breed they are minimal fuss and such great little entertainers. Probably always have a (shaved :p) Bichon Frise, too.

How Do You Deal With How Other Ppl "discipline" Your Dogs?
halfthewords replied to BC Love's topic in General Dog Discussion
My dogs don't get discipline from anyone but me, mostly because Carl would bite anyone who tried to physically correct him (badly abused). They wouldn't need to in the first place, anyway; all of my dogs are trained not to jump up, beg for food, steal toys, etc. If I had a dog who jumped on people, I would expect that they might give it a push away or growl at it, but there is a limit. -
I've been told Carl looks like a Glen of Imaal x, he looks identical to the ones that come up on google. But they are a lovely breed! Nice and fluffy!

My girl, Mischa, is 8.5 and she has had a luxating patella for at least a few years. It was definitely more pronounced when she was younger, and barely noticeable now. She does skip sometimes but I don't think she's in pain. If she was I would have the operation done. It's mostly about management with Mischa. I keep her extra lean (such that a two ribs can be seen) to ease the stress on her joints. She is getting older and slowing down a bit and it's clear in the way it takes her a while to get out of bed in the morning, although she's as active as she's ever been. I don't let her run on concrete; we do brisk controlled walks and she gets offleash time on grass. She walks 6-10 kms a day and loves it. In summer I take her swimming almost every day (she has learned to love it!) and that makes up a lot of her exercise during the hotter months.

I'll be there with Carl and Mischa and two of my friend's staffy/whippets.

My Kitten & Former Cat-phobic Dog!
halfthewords replied to halfthewords's topic in General Dog Discussion
He was originally only meant to stay for a few weeks - when we got him was a malnourished 4 week old dopey kitten. He was dumped in the trash at the vet my sister works at, and Carl just fell in love with him, so... We decided to keep him -
I was about to kick my kitten out of the bed but then I saw this and couldn't. Particularly adorable because Carl used to be terrified of cats. :D His inner momma bear has come out with our newest rescue!

Miniature Pischers = Min Pins SBT/terrier = mutt :rofl
-
I know two MinPins and they are both pretty timid. OH's parents' poor dog is a basket case. I was trying to teach him down one day and put a hand behind him so he couldn't walk backwards. When he bumped into my hand he screamed like a banshee and Erik got all predatory. Very hairy moment. They do seem pretty active, though. I just don't know if running around on the flat for an hour quite happily also translates to running through the bush for 5 hours. A correctly socialised Min Pin has the boldness of a Rottweiler. Both of mine are confident around people, large dogs, horses, cars, trucks, etc. I put a lot of work into making sure they were exposed to things at a young age, and the results show every day. The breed does have a reputation for being highly strung and they do tend toward either end of the spectrum if care is not taken, but so is any breed. Neither of my MPs are so confident that they are pushy or will pick a fight with another dog; they are bred to be 'fearless' and that's what they are. :D We go for 4-5 hour trail rides with our horses and take the Min Pins with us. My terrier/staffy can't keep up, and neither can the Bichon. And the older MP is 8.5. They are so fit.

Miniature Pinschers. Guaranteed to go all day, and you won't find a bolder dog under 5kgs. ;) And BOY are they active!

I would have told her to mind her own beeswax! I'm in Sydney too, and this weather doesn't deter me and my mutts at all! The parks are always just about empty and my lot love splashing around in the rain. Extra zoomies. I just take extra towels in the car! Honestly I only use coats if it's at night (one of my little ones really feels the cold, and the others are clipped short) and freezing. Otherwise the coats are too synthetic for proper 'breathage' and they just go naked. Carl loves this weather (except the wind, making the doors slam and be all scary ;)), and we're about to go for a walk now, then meet my best friend and his dogs at the local oval, which will no doubt be under water by now! I can't wait. :D

I am a fan of Cesar. I went to his last one in 2009 and while it was good, he mostly reiterated what he says on the show and I didn't learn very much.

Dangerous Dog On The Loose - Thornleigh, Nsw
halfthewords replied to Her Majesty Dogmad's topic in General Dog Discussion
Thanks for the warning, dogmad. My best friend works in Thornleigh most days as a personal trainer and takes his small dogs to the ovals he trains at, so will let him know. -
I have grown up with animals sharing the bed. When I was younger our dog was allowed to sleep wherever she wanted. Nowadays, nothing's changed. All of my dogs are allowed on the bed if they want, although the two that are 'mine' have their usual sleeping habits. Carl sleeps in my bed every night, he's never slept on the floor. He sleeps on a pillow propped against the wall, and in winter I always tuck him in to make myself feel better. He's happy with or without covers. Sometimes in summer if it's warm, he'll sleep under the bed or on the floor for a while, but when I wake up he's always right where he was before I went to sleep. Miss Mischa takes her spot under the blanket by my feet when it takes her fancy. Only in winter. Generally she prefers to sleep on the floor in one of the 4 very plushy beds in my room, but if I put her in my bed she'll stay there. In the morning she'll crawl up for a cuddle. In summer she sleeps exclusively on the floor. The cat sleeps where he wants, usually in the crook of my knee or one of the beds. When I housesit for a friend, I take Carl and Mischa with me. Her two staffy/whippets insist on sleeping in the bed and take up almost all of it! Four dogs and a person in a king size bed is a bit of a squeeze.
-
My 8.5 year old Miniature Pinscher can outwalk my energetic 5yo terrier x any day. Today she did 2.5 hours of walking and still had more to go, but Carl was exhausted!
-
Our schedule tends to be fairly out of whack because I do uni and I also work 3 part time jobs. Luckily dogs are very adaptable! During summer, I always walk them before 8AM for an hour. During winter, I find it much harder to get out of bed. Sometimes I take them up to the local oval to burn off some steam for 20 mins at 6AM before I leave but I usually don't start until 11 or 1pm at either job. If I do a morning shift, they get walked in the afternoon (always offleash time included). If I work a typical day, from 11 to 7, they are fed around 7/8AM and walked. We do some playtime and then I leave. Apparently while I'm gone all they do is sleep. Not surprising. When I get home, we usually go for another walk--30mins or whatever. Then dinner around 8, playtime, some training, lounging around while I do homework. We head to bed around 11PM.

Carl came with his name, but I am always being asked if he is named after Carl Williams. I almost changed it to Cajun, but there are too many fun nicknames to be made from Carl that I just couldn't! Mischa was just better than what her breeder named her: Mitzie. Didn't suit at all. I was 13 and doing German at school so I wanted a German name for our German breed. :D Cleo is short for Cleopatra, but she is not regal at all so the name didn't suit. Shortened to Cleo = much better! Jag (aka Jaeger) was just the first thing that popped into my head when we adopted him.
-
I have four dogs and two of them are super tiny so I am always cautious with unfamiliar dogs, no matter the breed. Mine have been chased by Sharpeis on more than one occasion. None of them appreciate being bodyslammed or jumped all over by Labs so I avoid them wherever I can--a lot of people with labs don't bother training them because they're 'naturally friendly,' like that makes the dog sociable. The few times you'll find me at the dog park, I go at off-peak times to avoid other people with dogs. Carl is really social and loves to play (Jag, as well) so if I want them to have some canine companionship, I mind a friend's dogs, arrange a playdate or meet up with someone who has dogs they know. The risk with unfamiliar dogs it too high for me. I will admit a slight prejudice against herding breeds... Mischa and Cleo are so small I automatically pull them away from dogs who start displaying herding behaviour, e.g. bellycrawling, that LOOK they get before they chase. ACDs in particular have been nasty to deal with, and aggro.
