Tick Treatment , What Do U Reccomend?
Rottsup replied to springdog's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
We had a bad experiance with brown ticks (not paralysis ticks) in Darwin on our GSD (semi long coat) where nothing worked appart from monthly tick injections given by our vet. It cost us $20 per injection (no other fee from the vet) and it was worth every penny. Once we started these injections we never saw another tick. We would treat with these injections from Aug/Sep till Feb every year then give him a break for 6 months (dry season) and start again. PS: Not that I prefer injections over safer herbal or other remedies but it was the last and absolute last resort and it worked. -
If I were you, I would ring my vet tomorrow and just clarify for peace of mind and to know for sure rather than guessing. Cheers

Good job you found that horrid thing. I hope for her sake (and yours) the beautiful girl will not become ill. I don't think we have paralysis ticks in WA Out of curiousity, what states/territories rural/towns/cities are the worst or badly infected with these horrible mites?

I agree with FHRP - our Rotti bitch had a lump just as you describe, moveable under the skin in roughly the same place and roughy a similar size as your GSD. Our vet operated on it, removed the lump and we paid for it to be sent away to pathology. It turned out to be a blocked salivary duct but the object blocking it was unidentifiable. The vet said it could be a tiny piece/slither of bone or a piece of wood (she chews at the tree branches every now & then) Our girl did not have any symtoms at all, just he lump. Let us know the diagnosis when you know. Good luck, I am sure your vet will sort it out in no time at all.

We gave the annual injections for heart worm along with the C5 every January to our Rotti girl from the age of 2 until she passed away :D at nearly 13 years old. We also gave it to our GSD from 2yo until he was PTS :D with very bad joint problems at almost 9 yo. However the two dogs we have now are almost 3 and 18 months and we love them very much They have only ever had the annual C5 and quarterly "normal" worming.... no heart worming. To start them on the annual injections the vet informed us that as we haven't had them on any heart worm preventitive, he will need to do a heart worm blood test first because if heart worm is present in the dog and the annual heart worm injection is given, there could be an adverse reaction. If you feed raw as we do, the normal worming tablets are a must but I do believe heart worm is only contracted through mosquitos. (Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but this is what our vet told me) Good luck in all of your individual decisions......

If I was in Vic I would help out Good luck and I hope you catch him before he hurts hinself -
RIP little Imi I say put this moron into an eski filled with iced water and close the lid... don't let him die that would end his suffering, let him suffer.

Definitely the dogs come too or I don't go BUT I would probably get out before it was too late if there were any warnings and before the need to be rescued. We used to live in Darwin and with the 3 serious cyclone warnings we got in 9 years... we were packed and ready to go "with the kids & the animals"

:D Super well done! It's a buzz, isn't it. Thanks Barb (Tassie) and ValleyCBR We had a great time but very glad it's over. As you say Barb, it is a buzz to have accomplished this title.

I can report now that our girl has her ET title :D The bike/walk track was tarmat which made is fairly easy for the cyclist but the dogs had to run on sand, grassy and tarmat. Next on the agenda is her CCD.... :(
-
I have been told the surfaces on the track in WA are concrete, sand & grass... but we'll see for ourselves tomorrow

GayleK, What a great story, thanks for that It has given me so much more to look forward to. Hopefully we'll do it and have as much fun as you seemed to. We have a Benson too, but he is too young at just 18 months so it will be his turn next year

Hi Ravenai1, You can do it on a push bike or run it You need to keep an average speed of 10km ph. If your dog needs a pee or poo stop, you have to catch up and fit back into your spot (that's the real scary part) and you can not over take anyone..... Thinking we may need a spare bike incase the first one has a problem cause I don't think either one of us can run at 10km ph for too long. Hope this info helps you to decide to do it Edited to add, sorry I replied before reading all the posts & GayleK answered in much more detail very well. Thanks GayleK

thanks that'd be great i want to do it when i get my girl back and when kelari is old enough. where is it held?? good luck to kodi? has boss done it?? It is at Little Rush Lake. I wouldn't think Boss has done it as he is only about 15 months old I think.... he's not my dog so I am not sure.

I know quite a few DOLers WANT to do it next year. But none I know of this year. For all those wanting to do it, I'll let you know how it went
-
That is the exact reason I paid a little extra for the flight and made sure my pup was on a direct flight from NZ to Perth. I was worried that with any stop over she would get "misplaced" and not make the change over in flights.

Hi everyone :D We are fairly new to posting on this site... been reading it for a few years ;) We have entered our Rotti bitch into the ET in a weeks time and realy nervious but at the same time excited to give it a go. Is anyone else going to do it on the 4th? Have you done it before in WA over the past couple of years? If so, what was your experiance? Cheers Michelle
