  1. Not advocating cross breeding but I am one that likes advocating the truth. Plenty of purebred poodles with PRA from reg. breeders. Not all reg. breeders conduct health tests. Moselle sometimes I wonder why you're a member here. You certainly seem to hold a low opinion of both purebred dogs and their breeders :D I don't think that post represents a low opinion of purebred breeders/dogs necessarily. I have noticed that alot of people here quickly count you (not actually you) as an anti purebred dog/breeder type person if you make comments questioning some things or agreeing with something about mutts/disagreeing with something abour purebreds. It has happened a few times to me, told to go and join a mutt forum or whatever. And I am def not anti purebred....I AM anti crap breeder regardless of what you are breeding, and admitedly I love a good bit of mutt but like a lot of people on this site, I want a purebred dog and am here to get some brill information. Just sometimes, you have to question some of the comments made because some of them are gross generalisations. Its nothing to do necessarily with being anti purebred. Or in Moselles case, being the repressed individual she is (living in the olden days), she is probably trying to wind everyone up to feel a bit more "strong" LOL (gross generalisationg anyone LMAO)
  2. The house they have is in Seaford - I have no idea what that burb is like.
  3. Oh no, that's terrible! I am pretty crap on a bike anyway, I have ridden into the back of a parked car whislt going fast - fully face planted, and also not watched where I was going and had the front wheel go down a crack and me fully over the handle bars LOL. However, I find having the dog means I concentrate a bit more so haven't had any accidents yet. The OH did on our first bike ride though. A pole was coming and he wasn't aware of it and went round one side while the dog went round th eother. He went crashing down off the footpath and rolled out onto the road...I cautiously called out "are you ok" while my daughter got ready to cry in case he was injured and the dog quickly bolted back to me thinking he was in trouble. Then the OH went "ahhh f*$% sake" and I knew he was ok so started laughing LOL
  4. PMSL at myself I have never heard of couch grass, I actually thought the OP was talking about a couch (sofa or whatever)
  5. Good thread. I also have a question, is it necessary to have them on tick treatment? Our dogs take advocate for fleas, worms and heartworm...but we dont do any tick treatment at all. Our vet said it wasnt really necessary and in the last 3 years he has only seen one tick in this area (we live in inner west burbs of sydney). He did advise that if we were going north at all to start the dogs on treatment at least 2 weeks before. Shoudl w ehave them on always? And if so, what is the easiest way to treat them for everything? Currently they get advocate once a month and as it covers all 3 I find it nice and easy. Obviously tick treatment doesnt go together with worming treatment so what would be the easiest way to manage it f they need it? Ta (sorry to hijack)
  6. LOL I am glad someone laughed and I wasnt the only one cackling away at my bad joke Do you want to come live with me? Noone in my house ever laughs at my jokes LMAO
  7. I am so excited....my mum and her husband are moving from NZ to Melbourne mid November. Oddly though, I was more pleased to hear that they ar etaking their dog with them than the news that they are actually moving LOL Anyway, they got a house today (first one applied for and online too - jammy as) and are getting really stoked about the big move and I just wanted to find out about dog lifestyle in Melbourne. I am not sure what specifically I am wanting to know but maybe stuff that they will need to know council, pest, park wise? FYI, Keb (the dog) is a Huntaway/Beagle mix that they adopted from the SPCA after their dog Remus somehow managed to escape their yard and was decapitated by a train (ranger suspects he was tied to the line by someone or thrown in front of oncoming train but that is a diff story). He has had a bit of a rough start in life. His mother was well known to council with the owners not desexing and allowing her to produce litter after litter after litter (not a BYB as such but an ignorant twat who really couldnt care about the welfare of the bitch or pups). He was then given to family who were completely ignorant of dog needs and kept Keb (not his name back then) in a yard all day without shelter and very little food. after 6 months with the family he was uplifted from the property and taken to the SPCA where, I believe, he spent the next 6-8 months of his life with nobody wanting to adopt him and them not wanting to euthanaise. Then along comes my mum and her husband (who were "never getting any more pets" because they had lost one dog and two cats - one of old age and the other of a car - within just a few months) and when they saw him, he was laying in a horse trough full of water with just his head poking out. Love at first sight I believe it was. he is a lovely dog, a bit boisterous but lovely nature anyway so I am stoked he has clearly found his definite forever home and that they ar ebrining him over. Back on topic, any info would be greatly received.
  8. Maybe because they are such slim dogs, they dont like what they see in the mirror and they think if they eat a lot of crap they might gain weight God that is a bad joke LMAO
  9. 26 k's! Not bad! I will definitely get told off for this, but years ago when we had a dog who had to run, the only way we could tire him out and get even a coupl eof hours peace, was to take him down the river and make him run behind the car. We got him at 50 ks once...honestly, I swear that was what the speedo said. I remeber tapping the dash and saying to the OH "that cant be right" and him saying "I am pretty sure the speedo is reasonably accurate" and then as soon as we said that he fell back...so he only managed it for about 30 seconds if that. I will get flamed for that but meh, we were driving fast so he would stay behind us but run flat out because he was one energetic little mofo who really needed to run (boxer/staffy x - that mix is just a little power pack), obviously we expected him to just fall behind and run hard out to catch up. Perhaps the speedo was out big styles, it never happened again so I will never know, wish I had got it on video though (however, I did regularly see him run at about 25kph and he always looking like he was out for a leisurely stroll - slight exaggeration but ya get my drift loL). He must have been pretty fast though because one time, he escaped and the dog ranger had to chase him in the car. When the ranger finally worked out where he lived, he told us the dog was so quick he had almost had trouble keeping up with him in the car LOLOL (man I miss that dog) There I go off on one of my off topic rambles. Anyways, back to the biking. We are all loving it so far. The OH takes our big boy out more than the wee girl and they go just the two of them. I believe my OH does not have to peddle at all and the dog just pulls him the whole way unless he is told to wait (at an intersection or summin). He always comes back with a massive doggy grin on his face though and is fully adoring of his dad for hours afterwards LOL EDIT: To add, neither if our current dogs are particularly fast LMAO, in fact, Barney is so slow hes almost going backwards LMAO
  10. My friend fostered an ex pigdog for a while and she always ate her own poop. Never the other two dogs, just her own. I have no idea why they do it but I am glad I have never had a poo eater
  11. Desex her. but I suspect the OP has already decided going by her posts and it just making nicies. By the way, that second heat you are thinking of waiting for...isnt way way way in the future at all.
  12. PMSL still at moselle, so funny. You ended a friendship because your friend killed a duck for eating? WTF are you like. You can't have a friend who has a different view to you? You do know that we, humans, are hunters eh? Naturally. It's not something that was originally fun, it was for survival. I dont think hunting would make my child "brainier", thats ridiculous. However, it would teach her about "nature". Hunting is perfectly natural to alot of species including our own. It might also impart some practical survival skills which could come in handy one day. I have no problems with hunting as long as the kill is as quick and as painless as possible. I am a big animal lover and I dont like to see any animal suffering (to the point that even though we were infested with mice and they were crawling all over our benches and shitting everywhere, I still felt bloody awful when I finally trapped one and it died) That's ok though, you go on thinking that meat magically appears in the supermarket without any animals being harmed. EDIT: to remove a comment that may have been a bit inappropriate (geez, that is what age is about eh...actually realising when you spew forth everything you think of it may not always be the "decent" thing to say - unless oyu are a man of course bwhahahahaahah)
  13. WE ACCIDENTLY spilt turps on some weeds in the back yard.....killed them real good and for ages too. And after spilling it, I hosed it for about half an hour to make sure the dogs oculdnt lick it up. In regards to the original post, why are you spraying it on your couch (I am confused), does it clean the couch too?
  14. WHAT! omg im sorry i dont believe in BSL but the old cattle dog is a true contender! They are great guard dogs and will bite. I have been around hundreds of dogs through station work, pig hunting hobby, my friends and even walking around town... You've always got to keep an eye on a cattle dog! We even owned one as a family dog for about 8 years and you even had to watch him - he would nip you if you didnt pay any attention to him! They are BRED to bite cattle on the heel to keep them moving or on the nose to turn them or pull them up. They dont belong in suburban backyards, They are working dogs. Of all the hundreds of dogs i've been around, the only two to ever bite were Cattle dogs. Been rushed by several others too. One of them wasa dog my uncle owned i used to play fetch with for hours that one wasnt his fault i was holding our terrier inmy arms and he snarled at Rocky (The cattle dog) and Rocky tried to attack him. The second was completely unprovoked, and was teo dogs who ganged up on me as i got out of my car and crossed the street to get a neenish tart from the bakery and one jumped up at my face and the other nailed me on the ankle. And they were dogs known to teh council as dangerous! Dont want em banned, but heck, owners should have a clue about their dog's true heritage and purpose. They are sweet dogs, with their family, but even if you are their owner you still have to be careful around them. Yep agree, my mates husband in NZ has a cattle dog and he is an aggressive mo fo. He would be the single most aggressive dog I have ever met. Fully loving of his family, and tolerant once you are known to him but when you are new, he is a scary boy and he lets you know he doesnt like you on his property. You cannot go near the dog without the owners next to him coz he WILL bite (and has bitten quite a number of people). I totally disagree with BSL, its just ridiculous and many people would lose lovely family pets as a result of it (and already have). Including pets who did not have any pitbull in them but looked like they might. For example, I used to have a beautiful red and white stafford/boxer mix. Gorgeous boy he was, but often mistaken for a pitbull. If BSL had of been a problem in NZ then we would have lost our gorgeous boy, who we nevcer could have proven what his breeding was, we got him out the paper for 20 bucks, met his parents but there was obviously no paperwork. Further to that, I have a large black lab x type dog who on th eodd occasion has been mistaken for a pitbull because he has a big jaw and he is very muscly (sp). I would hate for anyone to lose a pet over some stupid breedist attitude with no factual basis to back it up. We arent allowed to discriminate against race, size, sex or ability so why should we target a DOG because of the way it looks. Ive never heard anythign more ridiculous.
  15. Hiya I have been in Oz for about 18 months now and in that whole time my big dog Barney has not met any new dogs (neither has wee girl Pippi). Unfortunately both dogs seem to suffer from lead aggression or perhaps over excitement that turns into aggression??? Anyway, Barney has always been fine introducing new dogs to him in our back yard or at other peoples places (goes all big and puppy like - quite funny) and it almost seems like as a result of this his lead aggression has become worse (Pippi has been like this since day dot and will even do it if she sees her own reflection in a window). I would really like to work on this with them, with someone who has a dog and might have the patience to sit there with me (but separate initially) while my dogs go absolutely bananas (they are also not the most well behaved dogs on the planet as a general rule LOL). Obviously the idea would be that with doing this regularly they would eventually phase out of it and we would progress to off lead plays (though Barney is generally fine with this - or has been in the past). As a plus side for myself, I am also kind of hoping to make a friend or two as Barney is not the only one who hasnt met anyone new. Since we (me, man and kid) have been here, I have not made any friends and would like to make some but havent been sure where to start. Was thinking maybe a shared love of dogs might be a good starting point. Anyway, just kind of chucking it out there to see if anyone might be willing to help, totally understand if noone is interested as naughty angry dogs arent particularly fun for anyone and particularly people other than their owners LOL. FYI: Dogs are a 5 year old male entire lab x, and a 1 year old desexed foxy/shih tzu mix....and I am a 30 year old female (not desexed).
  16. Thats what I was thinking...you arent meant to be out walking dogs round the streets without leads so surely it would automatically be the off lead dog owners responsibility. Its a bit like driving an unregistered car, if you are in an accident, itd be your fault no matter what because you shouldnt have even been on the road int he first place (I am not sure if it works like that in Oz but does in NZ)
  17. Sorry but I don't find the idea of allowing dogs (as an example) tear an animal to pieces when there is no need for this atrocity to happen just cause it is instinctual for some dogs to do so. Really? How odd.....does it also disturb you when wolves hunt for their dinner? Hunting is a perfectly natural behaviour. And I am really sorry but man I was PMSL when I read "its a mans job". I would love to have a go at ferreting, I think it owuld be a brilliant way (especially for kids) to see how nature actually works. When we were in NZ we (well we being me not the man) always thought about taking up pig hunting to provide a nice bit of meat for the fams but unfortunately I didn't have the first idea about it so it always remained an "interest" LOL
  18. I might be mean but when my wee Pippi went a bit that way when she started going out in public I just ignored it. She was about 14 or so weeks, I think, and she would panic everytime a bus or bike went past and jab her heels in pulling to get back home. I just ignored it and carried on walking. I felt that any "attention" I gave her fo rit would just be rewarding the behaviour. Within about 2 weeks she was fine.
  19. People who don't pick up their dog poop annoy the hell out of me (sadly when younger, I was one of those people and now I have gone all reformed and I am worse than people who have always picked up) I watched this lady one day walking a long with her maltese. The wee thing shat all over the footpath, she watched him do the first half and then started walking off befor ehed finished so it was sacttered everywhere. I fished a plastic bag out of my handbag (for some reason I alway shave loads in there), then ran after her and said "excuse me, you dropped something" then shoved the bag at her. Silly old cow
  20. Oh def, heaps of articles around about it, and they all contradict each other. Which is probably what I find quite interesting about them...I dont think I use any of the information in raising my dogs however LMAO I read the article at work so will check my internet history there and see if I can find the link...
  21. I would talk to the neighbour first and let them know how you feel. Trapping thei cat may cause bad neighbourly relations, particularly if they didnt know it was something that annoying you. Personally I wouldnt be too concerned about the cat hurtign the pup, but thats just me. I'd use the super soaker too but you probably wont need to worry for long, pups grow fast and I have always found once they get to a certain size the neighbours cats dont come in anyway regardless of how freidnly the dog looks LOL
