  1. Also close to Ashfield you could try Haberfield, Five Dock, Russell Lea and Leichhardt. You will pay around $600 for a 3 bed maybe (that's what I pay in one of the above 'burbs) but they are all nice areas and very accessible to the city.
  2. I didn't think there was rabies in Australia. Seems I was wrong.
  3. I don't know where this idea comes from. Depending on where you want to live... AND keep your pets.. it isn't that difficult to find a rental in Sydney at all. I am in a 3br house, garage, decent size block etc in a nice area where MANY people are renting with dogs.... and I'm only 10mins from Parramatta CBD. It took looking at 2 houses and that was it. We were actually offered both but chose this one as it had more space. I agree...I live in the inner west, maybe a 10 minute drive to the city in a nice area in a 3bed house with a study and garage and a big yard with 2 dogs. I looked at maybe 5 houses and applied for 2, I didn't have any references either - left them all in NZ (dumbass)!!! Admitedly though this house is not through a property manager but directly with the landlord which makes it easier when you meet the owner rather than them choosing from a piece of paper.
  4. thanks everyone - Might look into Pax's kennel - now to find pax...
  5. My dog (as all dogs before) used to be taken down to the river and beach and was always off lead so he is much better behaved off lead. He will stay next to you while you walk along and generally come back when you call (as stated previously this can be a bit more unreliable if another dog is around) and he doesnt react to other dogs at all apart from going up for a sniff. But he is (as this thread says) a chronic puller on-lead. I can walk round my front yard with him without a lead and he will just stay with me but go in the front yard with a lead on and he will drag you all over the place. Our other dog was not raised going to the river off lead so I imagine shed behave the same no matter what - we dont take her anywhere off lead though coz she is a naughty poppit. Her recall is crap even inside the house LOL
  6. I agree. While Barney's recall slacks off a bit when there are other dogs round, if there are no other dogs he is better off lead than on and will heel and stay there
  7. I dont really think anyone has flamed the OP - pretty soft skinned to take that as flaming. Just some differences of opinions which is going to happen
  8. Thanks everyone - I will look at meadowmist and the DOLers kennel. Clyde: dogs are a lab x and a shih tzu/foxy x. Will need to be housed together - which doesnt appear to be a prob with any kennel
  9. I very badly want to understand what is writted in all these posts but it just isnt happening LOL
  10. I am not an expert ont he way it works but for me personally it seems like a number of factors. He doesn't like the tightening across his chest, plus like you say, it is like walking a much less powerful dog. As you say, it is not goign to stop a chronic puller overnight and he does still pull but because he doesnt like the tightening and the associated swing outwards he falls back. The odd time when he doesn't fall back on his own and pulls hard to get to something I am able to easily position him where I want. I seem to have a much higher level of control with the harness. My dog backs out of the tightened harness. So as soon as the harness gets tight, he stops walking until he is next to me - upon which he now gets a treat. Which used to happen with a choke chain but he would never stay there. He appears to be staying at my side for longer before moving forward. Maybe because he can feel the harness across his back or soemthing where as walking him on a choker or collar didnt matter as he always had soemthing round his neck. I am under no illusions that if soemthing were to happen and he decided he really had to pull....he would still be able to pull me...but at least I am not hurting his neck whilst tryingt o get him under control and I would be able to more easily get him under control. You raise a good point, I am really not sure why it appears to be working because honestly he is a bad puller - however, he does know what llw is...I don't knwo why it seems to be helping, but I am not goign to complain about it LOL
  11. thanks - look good do you use them very often? I am askign as whichever kennel we choose will be a regular place for whenever we go away so we want to ensure a good place where we can build a relationship. I am a real worry wart - probably because i am the main (only) carer of the dogs. I even worry if i go away and leave the dogs at home with the man and child
  12. heya yea we did measure...and then grabbed the wrong one - in saying that, they didnt actually have any his size so i now know....so will get a new one when they have them in this weekend. he is def too low and its on smallest size it can do....the attch bt sits down the bottom of the chest kinda saggy...but until we grab the other one itll do - as t still gives me more ocntrol if he does try to do anything he shouldnt. I cant believe i had never eard of them before!
  13. so true! apparently the poicket moster was jumping at at the fence like "hi hi hi hi hi " LOL
  14. where abouts is calabash kennels? oh really you can leave themn in your camp? We have decided that its probably a bit tight to do all that in 3 weeks and will now drive up the east coast to townsville (a mate lives there) and then back down the same way but stopping in different spots
  15. My one piece of advise would be: Enjoy them because they don't live nearly long enough!
  16. Awww st bernards are gorgeous! I dont think price should matter if you are getting the dog you want. I'd happily pay any price for any dog just about. I would like a dogue one day and was always looking at them at home in NZ and they were never less than $2500 (they are a bit cheaper now though)....and my partner wants a bulldog, which will be our next dog and in NZ they are usually about $2000-2500 but we have noticed here we will be looking at another $1000 on top of that. We dont mind, dogs are priceless

  18. I am really quite proud! So, I come home yesterday to a note under my door mat asking me to contact some tree people regarding access to our back yard or "tying up of the big black dog". I call the number and they are basically removing the tree from the neighbours yard - the tree leans on our fence and over our yard. Its a really big tree. Anyway, they need access to our yard but "the big black dog" was going "nuts". The guy kept saying to me what a great guard dog, hes excellent, you dont have to worry about anyone getting in with him there, he was scary etc etc. Obviously they tried hanging ot getting over the fence. They dont need to know that the "big black dog" is a "big fat sooky" and I am quite proud of the fact he is a good guard dog - had no idea (as obviously, people come to the front door when we are home LOL). Stupid I know and probably not much to be proud of but I am!
  19. We went out again last night (will keep using this harness until we get the smaller one over the weekend). We havent been out tonight as I wasn't feeling well after work so we have just done some zoomies and ball play. Anyway, we went last night and he does give the odd yank everynow and then, but it was most enjoyable. I even managed to walk him calmly with one hand (usually I owuld use two to ensure he couldnt get away/pull me over) and have a nice leisurely ciggy whilst I was walking him LOL normally I wouldnt bother as i wouldnt be able to hold it (yes I know filthy habit should stop). So, thus far I am very impressed!
  20. I dont mean to be rude or anything but, I thought you were looking for a temporary home for her? Why have enquiries even been made for her if she was at the vet boarding and not advertised as being available for adoption?
  21. To be honest, I only just started vaccinating my dogs. The dogs I have had as below: Chevy (RIP) had 3 puppy vaxs and that was it until we moved to Oz. Never had an annual check up. Went to the vet when there was something amiss. For the last 3 years of her life this was about 5 times a year as she developed allergies. Befoe that she went twice, once for speying and once for her ear when it filled with blood. Lennox (RIP) one puppy shot. 3 vet visits. One for a dog attack ripping a hole in his face, another to be neutered at 6 and another before the neuturing to sew a hole in his penis (no idea how it got there). Barney (5) one puppy shot. No vet visits. Then in March last year we moved here and he came in June (with Chevy) and he had vaxs and check ups befor ehe came. Since he has been here he has been to the vet once when he got up one morning and his back legs were wobbly. He has also had an annual booster last week and a check up at same time. Pippi (1 tomorrow) has had all her puppy shots and been to the vet at 6 months for speying. She will go to the vet next in September for her annual vax and a check up. It might make me a bad owner but I am not really into Vaxs or annual check ups (obvously I did do worming, fleang etc - no heartworm or ticks really in NZ). They go to the vet when they need to. I give them a once over most nights anyway while they are having cuddles and if I pick anything up that might need attention in they go. However, now that we live in Oz and there is noone to look after the dogs if we go away they have to have vaxs so they can go in kennels so they will get an anual vax and they will have a check up at the same time. I dont think 6 months is necessary as you can generally tell f your dog is a bit off (well if you spend lots of time with them which I asume most people here would do) but then probably most people here would thnk my dogs didnt go enough prior to coming here - which is fair enough.
