Food Intolerances & Elimination Diets – Advice Needed
bilby replied to peigirl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Have you contacted Murdoch Uni Vet Hospital ? After trailing poor Bouf to & from 2 different successive vets for 2 years to try & get his lameness sorted, I went to a third vet who immediately referred him to Murdoch where I saw a specialist and Bouf had his cruciate ligament surgery the next week. He's been at home for 6 days now & we have another 11 weeks of post-op care to go, but I feel really confident of the outcome. I have been so so impressed with all the staff there .... just wish I'd been referred much sooner. It's the difference between visiting a GP & seeing a specialist. Best luck -
I emailed K9 but got an automatic response that he is in Tasmania till 27/07/06. Does anyone know if the workshops are full ? Bouf has just come home today from Murdoch after cruciate surgery .. so I'd be dogless, but I guess I'm the one to be trained not him. & I don't want to confuse things .. but isn't Dianella NOR ? Chelsea .. how's the hatching going ? Bilby

Hullo everyone ... any progress reports on this one ??? I'm at the same block with Bouf .. had a 1-on-1 with my trainer today because Bouf just hates the dumbbell. I realise that I probably instigated a lot of this .. I had retrievers before .. & I guess I conveyed my frustration to him even though I was trying to suppress it. Then I decided that actually I didn't really mind .. hey he's a well behaved dog in all the social occasion .. so just forget about retrieving .. why bother if it was so difficult & alienating for us both ? So we just played .. & had a lot of fun ... this dog can now track & fetch scent articles ... So .. I decided to try dumbbell work again .. will work on her advice ( very similar to here) .. though she was able to pinpoimt something I'd never factored in before .. ie Mastiffs can't hold dumbbells if they're excited & panting & drooling ,, so we did 5 mins ..waited 10 mins .. etc Just wondered if anyone had any follow-up pointers ? If it gets too hard .. I'll just settle for my lovely companion dog .. no worries

Labrador Pulling Washing Off The Clothes Line
bilby replied to a topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Haven't tried this myself but was told that blowing up balloons ( no water - that would be such a delightful treat for a Lab) , & hanging in pillow cases round the line means dog punctures balloons & gets that harmless but alarming burst balloon shock in his face when he goes for it . ..& it is immediately associated with his behaviour , not with your return .. No matter how many toys etc etc .. the more I read on here, the more I believe that there is no way to keep a single dog entertained during 8-10 hours on its own. My 1st single dog was 5 times more work than since I started never having less than 2 dogs at a time. Good luck anyway -

Sounds as though Northern Suburbs is right for you Soniq .. but for anyone out the Hills way, Jacquie Humphries from Dog Logic in Stoneville is a fantastic trainer & is accredited by The Canine Evaluators of Australia. I haven't used a halti or choke chain on Bouf since my first workshop with her, & am now comfortable taking him anywhere .. even though I've got a back injury at the moment. "The Other End of the Leash" was one of the books she recommends.

This topic puzzles me .. why would dogs need their teeth brushed ? Who would brush them for them in the wild ? Human tooth decay is due to unnatural / poor diet - either because of "1st world" guzzling or 3rd world malnutrition. It seems to me to be yet another guilt-trip laid on dog owners by cash greedy manufacturers. Wouldn't the correct diet mean it wasn't necessary ? Yes .. the main ingredient of human toothpaste is baking-soda. Got jazzed up taste-wise into a magical compound called "Toothpaste" .. & now the clever bastards are cashing in on the Back-to-Earth issue with "Contains Baking Soda" No wonder we're all so confused .....................

raz - I took special notice of your bulb post in the other post .. thanks ! I have now tripled checked that all my spring bulbs waiting for planting are safely put away. I've also changed vets for all but dire emergencies to the interested, sympathetic vet even if she is an hour's drive away. I have hundreds & hundreds of bulbs in the ground though ......... Is your garden small ? - ie do you think she sought out the bulb or just unluckily came across it in a patch of earth ? I'm confused about garlic. I've read threads advising adding a clove of garlic daily to dog food .. & sites saying that garlic & onion cause anaemia .. Good thread ..................
