I think it is different state to state. In DogsNSW code of ethivs states I know that some other states don't have the exemption for working dogs. ETA I don't imagine the intent of the exemption for working dogs meant working breeds kept as suburban pets. yes this is what i said, a registered dog cannot be cross bred but a registered breeder can cross breed as many dogs as they like as long as they are unregistered dogs. they only way to stop this would be to say no registered breeder can cross breed any dog I thought that as a registered breeder you could only breed purebred appropriately papered dogs fit to be bred from. I did not think reg breeders could also have a sideline business in mutts??? They sure can and there are many examples including one who was raided and had over 300 dogs on her property on RSPCA rescue show breeding purebred and cross bred and still has her prefix. At least one advertises on dogz and breed purebred and is very vocal about how and why she also breeds cross breds. Think it through even if you could stop a registered breeder form breeding lots of dogs and cross bred dogs whats stopping them saying their partner does the other bit etc anyway? Good point Steve. ;) 300 dogs!! My neighbour bought their "cavoodle " from a local puppy farm. They had 700, yes, 700 dogs. They said the acreage was pristine, which greatly impressed them...I bet they didn't see behind the scenes. ;) It is difficult to say things to certain people. You come across as a snotty nosed know it all if you try to say anything against the well researched designer dog. Although I don't think the dog turned out quite as they imagined. Luck of the draw I guess.

There is a lab breeder who advertises in the TP, pups are sold through a pet shop, there is a neverending supply, and if you want ANKC papers with them you pay the extra few hundred they charge. They only have the one colour available. I recently had a couple visit who were looking to add a second dog. I was very impressed with what they knew / had researched. They understood a lot, had their current pup in training (toy breed), and were looking to get into agility with the new pup. They explained how much research they had done with their other pup, and he comes from a show breeder. Pup did not come with papers though. Pup cost a small fortune, and breeder told them it would be an extra $300 to supply papers. :D My guess is that pup was ineligible for papers ie: too many litters from mum, so asking a rediculous price gets them out of supplying the papers. They also were amazed at the temperament of my lot, as the mum of their pup was a bit aggro. The breeder explained this was because she had pups. Pups or no pups mine never show aggression to people. My point being, that nomatter how much joe average researches, they can still be duped into thinking they are doing the right thing. All we can do is try to stay objective in educating people about what we consider to be acceptable practise. Keeping the emotion out of the situation, I find, can get the point across better than belittling a purchasers previous choices. (not that I think that is what the OP has done, just trying to make a point) Also agree that most people think council / microchip papers = pedigree papers.

The scoring by Wyburn was the cheap bit. I nearly fell over when I got the bill for my 2 girls to be x-rayed.
-
I was only charged an extra $4.50 to what it was 3 yrs ago. Clarifying the digital bit - my vet sent them in "Diacom" format or something similar (I'm not up on all the technicalities), but he needs it in JPEG format. Apparently it took the vet about 3 hrs to figure out how to change it. at the wine comment!!
-
I had my 2 at the vets last week for their xrays, and everything was sent via fax / email to Wyburn. My vet now does the digital xrays, but Wyburns equipment isn't "advanced" enough to understand it, so the vets had to change all the xray formats and resend. Wyburn then rang my vet and said he can no longer accept faxes of forms, so he had to email the new doc to the vet, and I had to go back and refill in the current form, and it had to be posted so he could sight the original. My vet also received a phonecall / lecture from Wyburn about the fact that my 2 girls could be scored if I still wanted that to happen, but because of litter registration restrictions in Labradors, they still needed a scored male to be the sire to register the pups. :D I don't know where all of this came from, but that is certainly nothing new in the labrador world. That rule is about 10 yrs old! There weren't all these dramas when I last had it done 2-3 yrs ago. Maybe he just needs a holiday. ;)

Well done Zed. My thoughts are with you Bulldust. Wish I was closer to help.

My God, some of those comments.... Give the poor dog a chance. Find out exactly what happened, temp test the dog, don't just PTS as the first reaction. I have never heard of bullmastiffs as a breed being scary and dangerous...quite the opposite in fact.

Burglars snort man's ashes, thought it was cocaine MIAMI (Reuters) - Burglars snorted the cremated remains of a man and two dogs in the mistaken belief that they had stolen illegal drugs, Florida sheriff's deputies said on Wednesday. The ashes were taken from a woman's home in the central Florida town of Silver Springs Shores on December 15. The thieves took an urn containing the ashes of her father and another container with the ashes of her two Great Danes, along with electronic equipment and jewelry, the Marion County Sheriff's Office said. Investigators learned what happened to the ashes after they arrested five teens in connection with another burglary attempt at a nearby home last week. "The suspects mistook the ashes for either cocaine or heroin. It was soon discovered that the suspects snorted some of the ashes believing they were snorting cocaine," the sheriff's report said. Once they realized their error, the suspects discussed returning the remaining ashes but threw them in a lake instead because they thought their fingerprints were on the containers, sheriff's spokesman Judge Cochran said. Police divers were trying to recover the ashes. The suspects were jailed on numerous burglary and other charges. (Reporting by Jane Sutton; Editing by Sandra Maler) http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/newshome/8680...-it-was-cocaine WTF??? Idiots. I do particularly like the comment below the story, something along the lines of leaving unlabelled bags of ajax around the house...

http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/latest/867996...h-ears-cut-off/ Kittens found with ears cut off A group of kittens have been found in Hobart with their ears deliberately cut off. The Hobart Cat Centre, at New Town, in the city's north, is treating the litter of four kittens, who had their ears apparently with removed with scissors. The centre's general manager, Lyndell Whyte, said it was one of the worst animal cruelty cases she had seen. "It's incredibly cruel, I mean, words actually fail me as to the motivation behind what would actually make somebody think this was an okay action to undertake on a kitten who's probably barely even got his eyes open," she told ABC Radio on Wednesday. The RSPCA is investigating the case.

I have been checking out what is around too. Came across International Genetics in my searches. (InGen) http://www.ingen.bs/ Wondering if anyone knows anything about them / has used them. From reading their website I wasn't quite sure whether the test kits are free or not?

Check out the guys who are in the commercial marketplace. There will be a link to their website. Can't remeber their name off the top of my head, but their Sentinel is way cheaper than in shops. Pets warehouse maybe????

That is true lab puppy style lillistar!! -
Nik - I've really been looking forward to what you come up with each day. I admire your creativity, and everyone elses. I feel my shots are "predictable".

Awesome pics everyone - such great variety too. Day 12: (Not the greatest pic, it's out of focus, but it was actually educational. First, I have no idea how wasps make their nests, but obviously someting to do with bubbles of saliva to glue it together. Secondly I did not know they used dog hair either!! I even know what dog it is from as Lyla has some hairs with a white base, you can see one in the pic.) Wasp Day 13: Blossom

My girl was on them for 3 weeks. That's how ill she was.

I lost a whole litter last year at day 52. My bitch had slowed down a lot, but I put that down to a belly full of pups, as she would still perk up when I was playing ball with the others. I noticed a greenish black discharge mid morning so took her straight to the vet. Unfortunately I got the young vet who is not as good at explaining things, and he basically said we need to x-ray / ultrasound to see what is going on, but the recommendation was to c-section her immediately and get rid of the whole litter. I definately wanted the ultrasound first before deciding to end the pregnancy. They could see pups, but no heartbeats. After that I agreed to the c-section for the safety of the bitch. Several pups were dead, some necrotic, the ones still alive were not good, and too young to be saved. My bitch was very sick for about 4-5 days before the AB's started to work. Despite blood tests, I never got an answer for why it happened. There were several scenarios: 1: Bacteria could have been introduced from the male at time of mating. 2: During the pregnancy a pup died, was not reabsorbed, therefore created the bad environment in the uterus. 3: Bacteria picked up by bitch at some stage of pregnancy. Obviously I was devastated, especially without a real answer as to why. Hopefully it will not happen again. I did some research on DOL, and discovered there were several people who experienced similar things last year. The general consensus was to get the bitch on antibiotics prior to mating and for a period of 3 weeks to eliminate #1. BTW my vet also asked if he could spey her while she was under. She was only 3 at the time. If it happens with her again I would though. As for the weight loss, my girl was different. She has never got her figure back. After her first litter she bounced back immediately.
