Whether for the money or not, you chose to breed for colour as your highest priority. Instead of being able to choose from the best labrador available at stud, you restricted yourself to the best chocolate labrador, eliminating all of the yellow or black dogs that may have had better temperaments or may have been a better match for your girl. Yellow or black are not considered faults, so there is no reason not to consider using them if you are really breeding to improve the breed. You say you had to have a choc to choc mating to maximise your chances of getting your choc girl, but what were the chances of getting any other colour from that mating? Well said. Personally I don't agree with breeding for a specific colour. On a interesting note, the breeder I got Riddick from is slowly eliminating Yellow Labs from her lines all together. I don't know all her reasons behind it, but one of them is she wants to improve the colour of the chocolate labs. Hers are this really rich deep chocolate colour, quite stunning actually, where as I've noticed a lot of the chocolate labs you see around tend to be more of a flat brown. She isn't doing it for profit as her dogs mainly go to guide dogs anyway. Edit for spelling.

I am a judge Every single Breed that I have owned over the years I have judged over the years. This is my opinion(obviously) I am not saying that those who dont show are nut cases. But yes many do lose the plot. There are many Bulldog breeders out there who do not show. They have no idea what they are doing within their breeding program and generally dont give a damn what they are doing to the breed. Have I made it pretty clear now? But if you breed AND show, couldn't that mean that you may (not saying will) favour dogs that are like your own, rather than others? Just a thought. And yes, you have made it clear. I am not a nut case, but will inevitably lose the plot because I don't show my dogs. If you or anyone else would like to volunteer to come and look after my 3 young kids some afternoons and weekends, I would gladly take my dogs to training, and weekend shows. At least that would prove that I do "give a damn about what I am doing to my breed".

This may be true of some people and I know of a breeder that did have warped ideas of the standard and was still showing with mixed success. If you show often enough, and chase points you can still title animals. Yes people who do not show can have warped ideas, but maybe that is because they are still breeding for what they believe is the prefect interpretation of the standard and not following the current trends in the ring? Then their stock becomes far removed from what is being shown today as such. Why couldn't somone like me who has to travel vasts distances to show, so therefore isn't at this pint in my life, not as capable of breeding a very good dog as a person that shows?? I keep myslef up to date with what is happening and what dogs are winning, just don't get in the ring myself. Either a person has an eye for a dog or they don't regardless of wether they show! Agree!!

So you are saying that those who don't show are so full of themselves that they are nut cakes, but you think your opinion is better than the judges?? Isn't this a bit contradictory? Or when you are a showie its ok to make your own rules??

What if the sires you use are titled, or imported dogs? I would hope that this is one way of increasing your chances of quality puppies.

I recently came upon the suggestion that even if you are a registered breeder you are considered a BYB if you don't show etc. I was rather dumbstruck. And offended. Is it really the general concensus that any one who does not have the ability to travel around to shows continually is no better than some clueless person who lets their bitch wander the neighbourhood getting knocked up every season? I would surely think there is more to labelling someone other than what trophies they don't have. (I am by no means trying to bag anyone who does show, just saying that not everyones circumstances allow it.)

That chocolate labs are dumber than the other colours, and they have a different temperament.
