A Good And Proper Budget Dry Food/kibble?
Lyla replied to biscuit_the_golden's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I'm pretty similar to you Ellz. After using a variety of kibbles, I now prefer Great Barko. Uncle Albers is good too, especially in winter as it has a higher fat content. GB and UA is the only thing that keeps weight on my Lab boy, he is all muscle now. He pukes pedigree when I tried him with that. I don't mind Coprice in adult or puppy, and thats my backup food if I cant get GB, it doesn't have as many of the fillers as some of the dearer ones. I have noticed that the poo pile is dramatically smaller since using GB, and you feed them a very small amount, less than the recommended amount. Between the raw stuff and the kibble a bag of GB will easily last me 4-5 weeks for 4 Labs. The protein and fat content of GB / UA is pretty similar to most puppy kibbles. Its about $33 for 22kg bag, but only 1 place around here sells it. Definately the best value for money of the cheaper ones. I have also used the Coles brand food, and thought it was fine. I've never tried the woolies one. I didn't realise it was Coprice! I have heard that racing greyhound owners use Woofbix. I've never tried it, but doubt I would either. I've used Supercoat, but it caused a bit of itching in mine, plus its got too many fillers. If I were to feed a "premium" food, I would choose a holistic kibble. More "real" stuff in it. ETA: your boy looks great ellz -
Awwww! How gorgeous. Congrats! A toller puppy is definately on my list of wants.

There was an ad in our local paper today Purebred Labrador puppies. 5 males, 2 females 5 white, 2 fawn. M.V.W. I really need to brush up on my lab colours.

Everyone loves a lab puppy. Got anythink that'll still look like that a year down the track? Not as fussed on the growed up ones. I've heard those silver ones are pretty niice too. They don't chew and dig like the other collours. Don't mind those choclet ones with blue eyes neether. Ta. PS: Not sure if i'll get back to ya, sending bulk email, so whoeva gets back to me the quickest gets the bizness. Cheers.

I really feel for you, but it's nobody's fault. Unfortunately it is just one of those things, devastating as they can be. I think you have done the best thing you can by offering a replacement pup, and I don't think it is insensitive of you. All you are doing is proving that you do care, and you are willing to try and help out the puppy owners in the only way you really can. Once someone has been to the vets, I think the responsibilty then lies with them, not the breeder. As a breeder you can only do so much with advice and support, the vet is the person who needed to fill in the gaps in this situation, especially as the pup had actually been seen by them. I would still be recommending a raw diet, but maybe modify what type of raw until a certain age. I am not sure how old this pup was. Maybe recommend minces or necks until adult teeth are through, then introduce the carcasses. I know nothing anything will say will make you feel better, be be assured, it is not your fault, and all us DOLers are thinking of you.

1 yr from the last puppy vac. Depends on what method your vet uses. Over here its 6, 12, 16 wks, so 1 year from the 16 wk one. It should say on the vacc cert when the next one is due.

In regards to websites, after googling backyard breeders recently (trying to find a good definition of one),I came across a breeder of oodles who had a fabulous website, bagging BYB, puppy mills etc. If I didn't know better I would have been most impressed with their views etc. I had to double check her dog profile pages to confirm the oodle crosses she talked about. From her slant on things she described her "breeds" and had you believing that anything but an oodle is an unethical mutt. The general public would be fooled by her eloquent writing.

Agree! I would never own an undesexed male as a pet. In general they are a PITA.

So you pay for the pup, then spend around $500 getting the pup scored, and then pay $800 to get full papers? That sounds absolutely rediculous to me. The breeder should pay for the scoring unless you also intend to breed the dog. If you pay for the hip / elbow scoring, I do not see how you would be expected to pay an extra $800 for a piece of paper. No Way. Do you personally have a reason for needing main papers? I know. when did dogs stop being dogs and become ridiculously expensive just because they were hard to come by? but anyway, no, we dont particularly want one on full papers. We discussed taking him on terms on the proviso that we could buy another pup from her 1/2 price down the line when she used him as a stud I would expect one for free if your pet is spending time away from you for stud duties, as well as the fact that you are expected to pay a small fortune for him in the first place. I cannot get over the extra $800. If you don't need main papers, I would raise this with her, as she is the only one who will require them. (And they cost nowhere near that).

ETA: I also think it is very bad form to be too lazy to provide any pics or info to puppy buyers. If anything, I think my previous puppy buyers might have gotten sick of the number of emails I sent them.

I don't think the hairless Lab is invited. Only short or long haired. I do like the sound of the Central Asian Lab though.

That bit cracked me up! "Oh now that I know Snowy doesn't have any pitbull, I know when my sons friends visit she won't turn aggressive" I can't believe they aired such a dumb statement.
-
Dr Chris's jokes are so lame. He seems so fake and full of it to me.
-
Mmmmm. Yeah, its not a pit bull. As the owner says it's now GUARANTEED to be safe with kids! Easy fixed. EFS
-
Surely they could have spaced out the 2 stories on separate episodes. Says who that it was a pit bull that attacked Scruffy anyway?? I hope Snowy doesn't have any APBT, cause I am sick of hearing the phrase on this show.

I have tears streaming down my face too. I'm sure your kitties knew you loved them, and I'm sure that the lives they had were very happy with you. What you wrote was lovely, I had a smile on my face at the bit where you described Ari hating all other living creatures. She sounds so much like my cat who lives with my brother due to intense hate of dogs and kids, and it is their quirks which make them so unique and lovable. RIP little kitties. Hugs Jaybeece.
