Is It Important To Desex A Male Dog?
gemibabe replied to Haze's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
There's ya health concern Haze... Desex to save old heart ache down the track -
Kay I don't think you could pass it on, but its an airborne illness so seperating them would help, but wont gaurantee (sp?) your dogs catching it. When I took mine to the vet, they put the dogs in isolation do lower the risks. Are all your dogs vacc with C5? C3 doesnt cover KC, as I found out :D if vacc against it, they can still catch it, but wont get a full blown dose of it. Best to get her checked out from the vets Good Luck! Kylie

Sorry Myzska thats not going to happen re: K9 workshop in Vic. I didn't follow the thread either. He walks perfect on lead and comes when called, he is not a handful, just very abused He isn't fearful of dogs or everyday noises. He cowers at human voices when raised or in an angry tone the rest is in my first post. Peibe thanks for that advice, I will try that see how we go... Pics... here you go :)Shelby is with white and smaller, Joey is the pound boy -

Submissive/cowering/slinking Off With Food...
gemibabe replied to gemibabe's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
no offence taken, it was very funny, I got a good belly laugh from it I wont be patting him with his dinner... tonight I hung back a bit and he crept ever so slowly towards his bowl with a side glance to check where I was, So I wont bother him with it. Syd, I thought tethering him might be the wrong thing at the moment. I will do the TOT with him, once I've built his confidence up. I'm going to take a look at that mad meg thread, thanks Kylie -

Hey Gemibabe ..... you lost your teeth or something? ROFLMAO ditto!! That was so funny Thanks everyone! I wanted to do the TOT program but thought twice about it with him because he would think he is/was in trouble. I'll start carrying treats, one good thing with him is he is a garbage guts... gobble first, smell/taste later Actually sometimes I wonder if he does get to taste it I make him sit before his meal, and I say his name and he looks at me ever so quickly - nano seconds infact - I jump on that real quick and say OK to eat. I'm going to print all this advice out and highlight the training tips and get cracking Thanks again Kylie -
RIP Stewie I'm so sorry for your loss Trace

Some here know that I rescued a staffy from the pound with good intentions to find him a new home through Ivy, but once he was here, Shelby got on great guns (thanks to a fellow DOLer ) and due to his previous owners abuse I couldn't bare to give him up... plus its great for Shelby to finally have a doggy friend. He cowers at the raise of a voice, he slinks off with his dinner (like he isn't suppose to have it ) and thinks he is constantly in trouble....very rarely makes eye contact with me also He is non aggressive towards Shelby and shows no interest in joining in on the barking fest Shelby has with the dogs next door. If anything - he goes up to tell her off, by initiating play with her. In the first week he was here he wasn't interested at all in playing with her and her toys, but now they constantly play, nearly always instigated by Shelby... she is so hypo, where he is very laid back, not a care in the world... Not bothered by cars/door knocks etc... So he has settled in great with Shelby and I have seen a slight improvement with us humans, but its hit a brick wall. So I need tips to help him improve with humans please. Thanks Kylie

Pampa I'm soooo sorry to hear that she hasn't recovered 100%. Here's hoping for a good flight... its slowly creeping up Maybe a change in weather will help the healing process. Thinking of you ;) Kylie

Thanks BL There has been no coughing today... Sandra, I'd get the cough looked at.. Good Luck!

Allerziet mentioned benedryl aswell... Just how much do you give a dog? one weighs in at 19kgs... the other 24kgs...
-
Thanks Zorro and Mj... Their throats are not red enough to be KC... but have been told if coughing starts again in the morning to go straight back to the vets. One is already on antibiotics for a licky licky site which should keep any KC at a distance also... So just playing it by ear now... Thanks again Kylie

Thanks, I'll notify the people behind me with a GSD and the other house with SWF... just incase they have it... I have to go out now...will be back after the vet trip Thanks Kylie

Hi all, I think Shelby has Kennel Cough. I have both dogs booked in at the vets today at 3pm, but was wondering how often does a dog 'cough' with Kennel Cough? Could she just have something stuck in her throat? Or a dry throat? And how is Kennel Cough diagnosed? She woke up this morning gagging and when I rang the vet they said it sounds like kennel cough. Do dogs generally 'feel' unwell? Mope around? I don't want both dogs on a course antibiotics for 3-4 weeks if its not KC...

umm... Count me OUT thanks

Obsessive Compulsive Dogs
gemibabe replied to Roxy Lady's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
For Shelby she only goes nuts for the whipper snipper or lawn mower, she doesn't attack the clothes on the line. She isn't ball obsessed like 'ned'. She will play with a ball or her shoe, but gets bored with the retrieve and chase again and again... its like she is saying, I'm not going to get it again... she does prefer to play tug though... Now Jake never popped his tennis ball... he would sit there all day just applying the right amount of pressure to the ball, without popping it. Best dog!! Take him down the beach, he would have his ball, if not, he would fight other dogs... Even with his ball in his mouth, he would attempt to steal another dogs ball, trying to fit both balls in his mouth -

Ah Shelby hates the whipper snipper too... First time I found out, I had a guy come do the edges of the wire fencing, The fencing was pig fencing, where she could stick her head thru...he was on one side, Shelby on the other... damn fool nearly whipped her nose right off, I think the whole town heard me bellow out that day... Gee's it was close... the guy looked at me as if to say "look at your dog, HA HA, how stupid"... That was the last time Shelby was ever near a 'live' snipper. She is like that with the lawn mower too... just goes for the wheels She now stays indoors when I mow the lawn... She can bark all she likes, cause inside I cannot hear her outside mowing the lawn. Can you seperate them Bullyluvr...?? Ball obsessed, is that such a bad thing? I had a Staffy, Jake, if he didn't have his ball, he was lost... He would sit and chew it all day... I miss my boy efs -
Socialisation & Neutralisation
gemibabe replied to Steve K9Pro's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Erny Lives weren't as busy back then as they are today... Family's had more time to be family's... Dogs were very rarely bored...kids played outside with the dog... Kids these days, just don't interact enough with the dogs...video games and computers have taken over... so sad :D -

Do your kids feed the dog? my son feeds our dog 50% of the time and only now has she just started to listen to commands from him. He's been feeding her for a few weeks now. She has always sat for him, but now drops and we are working on the stay...
