  1. collar, lead, and car harness for when older unless you plan on using crate in car for travel. good vacum cleaner as Sams shed prolificly, good car seat cover for same reason http://www.samoyed.cc/samoyed.html this site is a good one for lots of info Crate fan Don't get too carried away with stuff as usually once puppy comes home you will discover half of what you got they are not even interested in mine sleep on old scruffy towel on wood floor and choose to ignore the luxurious pet beds. play with anything and everything that is not a bought toy. Prefer to drink out of a $2 round crazy clark bowl then an elaborate water dispenser, won't eat off their expensive dog bowls, prefer these plastic throw away square party plates because it is way more fun after dinner to chase the plate around the floor. Camera fully charged and take lots pics
  2. http://www.daff.qld.gov.au/4790_15093.htm The exact facts on Hendra and mode of transmission is any secreation contact from horse -> human. Not related in any way to bat lyssavirus And this is exact facts on Lyssavirus -> http://www.daff.qld.gov.au/27_16070.htm As suggessted only way to know for certain would have been to have bat tested, as it was seriously decayed likelihood of any viable secreation would be negligible and therefore should not pose any risk to dog involved. The one known dog who tested positive on the property in QLD that had several horses under quarrantine for hendra virus did not show any symptoms at all and it is unknown how transmission occurred other then possibly by contact with horse that had died, as it was an unknown variant the family had to have the dog euthanised and the body sent for testing to help with the data base regarding the disease. Pets in highly bat populated area's should be prevented from coming in contact with any bat excrement, fruit droppings which will contain saliva and outside water containers should be covered at night.
  3. This is extract from a paper on the subject of research done into dogs with extra toes http://www.genetics.org/content/179/4/2163.full.pdf "CONGENITAL malformations of the vertebrate limb are often observed as abnormal numbers of digits. One class of defect is preaxial polydactyly (PPD), which is caused by alterations in the anteroposterior patterning of limb development (Hill et al. 2003; Horikoshi et al.2003). Dogs in general have four digits in the hind limb, presumably due to an evolutionary adaptation (Galiset al. 2001). However, in a few breeds, including Great Pyrenees, five or six digits have been intentionally maintained through breeding. In addition, most breeds often display this extra digit as a genetic variation, although the number of digits (five) in the forelimb is essentially unchanged. This type of dominant genetic alteration has been commonly called ‘‘dewclaw,’’ but is more accurately described as ‘‘hind-limb-specific PPD.’’ Rarely, polydactyl mutations involving both the fore and hind limbs occur,as reported in breeds like the Norwegian Lundehund (Fogle 2000), although their genetic bases are poorly understood." so nothing to worry about puppy doesn't know he has an extra one :D
  4. Wouldn't the deworming have settled his GI lining by now? It's been about 6 days since the worming. He's currently eating only raw chicken. Pup was with rescuers for a week, also on raw chicken and had solid poop then. It was only after they tried giving him some canned food and puppy milk that the diarrhoea started. He has some goat yoghurt from time to time but I limit it. Is a fecal test necessary if he's been wormed already? Or should they still check for other nasties? Will get the vet to check for any obstruction. The deworming medication may or may not have had any direct effect on his gut, but all those worms would certainly have done so with all their knawing away, re worm a week after to make sure all left overs and eggs are gone especially in a bad infestation. Raw chicken is very bad for puppies as it can often carry the salmonella bacteria which will definately give any dog a case of the hurry gut, also does same to humans nasty nasty bug, when pups are over a year and have tougher immune systems chicken necks and wings raw are ok but young pups chicken should always be cooked. Canned food + sudden change in diet = bowel upset, throw in the mix of worms and different environment and hey presto sick puppy syndrome. No need for any feacal test as such only if obvious blood or to exclude salmonalla, which it sounds like he may have. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC339295/ http://perfectpuppycare.com/how-to-make-sure-your-puppy-doesnt-get-salmonella/
  5. Yep kennels on the ferry but down on the level where the cars are. Very noisy and freezing (least it was when we crossed in February). We had jackets on as wind was bitterly cold and Dog may be more settled in the car where it is familiar etc We had a very smooth crossing which I am told is most unusual :) We travelled all over Nth & Sth island NZ for 3 months with dog and had no problem, stopping as needed for toileting Him and us and all he had in car was a non spill water bowl and a rug as we had to travel light when flying over from Oz to Christchurch. Food was our biggest issue as he is very regimented in times of eating and we could not always accomodate that aspect. We drove from Christchurch to Picton straight through having left early in morning stayed the night there and caught early morning Ferry over to Wellington arriving around lunch time, the cost was high(around $300) for car +2 adults and dog, Book online as it is a bit cheaper, arrive early to board(drive on) as well. there is huge park near the ferry terminal(In Auckland drive I think it was) where we were able to take dog for walk prior to boarding. After arrival in Wellington we took the route through to Paekakariki then over to Otaki, then levin around 2 hours I think it was. We stopped along the way at a nice beach area for dog run and eats etc. Dogs are amazing and take everything in stride as long as they know their human is close by.
  6. I think that 40deg is way to high as the cut off, it should be more realistic to the wider Australian show regions, as you can get a reportedly 27 deg day which feels more like 38deg with soaking humidity, no breeze and no shade in site, and dogs and humans wilting, to the 30's temps with breeze, shade and no humidity which feels fine. Show dog is Silver poodle and so far she is oblivious to heat, as I fade away even in low 20's if the humidity is high she wants to run around and be a maniac. (I think she has built in reflective lining ) Shade is #1 priority, my gazebo has reflective roof inner lining with high UV factor included, next purchase is the reflective walls, open show trolley for one dog metal crate for other with plenty of air circulation room (bigger size then needed), water bowls frozen and melts as day goes on,I have extra kept in esky so I can swap - I pre freeze in container and pop them out and wrap in foil to keep frozen until needed, crate fan if needed so far have not used, but do use in car as adjunct to air con as often still hot in back of vehicle when travelling. Cool coat for one long haired single coated dog, Poodle coat and styling precludes use of cool coat and spray with water
  7. Stick to your C crate and throw a wet sheet or towel over with fan on it if possible, way way cooler then the canvas soft crates, these get incredibly hot despite the add saying they stay cool, I tested mine with all flaps open and inside a Gazebo placed thermometer in there and in normal wire crate and the temp went up to 37.8 in one hour and this was no dog in there, no sun on it either. Outside day temp was 25 deg, high humidity. In the metal cage Temp stayed at 36deg
  8. Puppies go through several stages from birth -> Adult experiencing multiple gut changes along the way and subsequent bowel excretion difference, puppies often have upset digestive tracts when exposed to changes in diet, medication, parasitic investation & disease process etc. The infestation with parasites would definately have had a signifiant effect on the puppies GI linning and the mucosa. Hence the probably cause of the diahorrea. So for now bland diet and fluids to hydrate, while the goats milk is good I would probably go with it watered down a bit to reduce the fat content. I would just stick to plain cooked chicken and see how things settle in the next few days and then very gradually you can re introduce other items the pup was previously on. Lite plain yoghurt is also good for helping to re-establish normal gut flora. There are a couple of gastritis bugs dogs can get, and also diahorrea is a symptom of several nasty other things, but if the pup is active, interested in its food and not vomiting, or showing signs of pain, confusion or temperature, then gut rest is what is needed to allow the lining to regrow. However Vet check should be done to rule out obstruction with bowel matter overflow - which gives foul smelling, copious amounts of watery stool and sometimes the opposite with total abscence of any bowel matter.

  10. Making 'Bo' http://www.youtube.com/watch?annotation_id=annotation_725150&feature=iv&src_vid=lce5gWKgMXI&v=yQgq9Fc1sQo And how he got his name = Listed by the name "Amigo's New Hope" with American Kennel Club's breed registry, and given the name "Charlie" by his original owners, the puppy received his current name from President Obama's two daughters, Malia and Sasha, in part after their cousins' cat and Michelle Obama's father's nickname Diddley; the dog is a namesake of deceased singer Bo Diddley. But indeed he could be named after the Presidents initials BO , poor dog, I don't think I would want to stick that monica on anyone :)
  11. Just a couple things on dogs and life jackets, always a good idea to have a long line (specific type lightweight nylon boating line)attached to handle on dogs life jacket. Relative who are also long time huge sailing buffs, take their dog everywhere on the vessel they have learnt from experiencing many different types of sea conditions that it is very easy for a dog to get washed overboard, they never use to have a life jacket on their dog (kelpie/BC X) and this dog was mad keen water dog he would jump off boat quick as lightning and had no fear, always swimming to starboard and the owner has a little below water line deck, dog would just jump back on board etc. Someone convinced them dog would become shark bait and a tether line would be recommended, they put the dog in a life jacket and it got washed overbored in a storm and the last they saw of it was as it was being swept away by the strong current and wind with said life jacket acting as as it should and dog not having enough strength to fight the conditions. Some weeks later a phone call to them from a concerned person to inform them their dog had been found running up and down the beach of some remote place, identified by this fluro yellow and red vest and the collar and ID. No one seriously believed the dog would have survived its ordeal that night let alone make it to a safe shore. Owners and dog were reunited and since then mesh net has been placed completely around the boat sides and dog is kept in a new vest with this nylon long line firmly attached so if it should go over board again at least they can reel him in. :) this is the brand of life vest they use -> http://www.topdogs.com.au/products/Ruff-Wear-Portage-Float-Coat.html
  12. Agreed and usually prohart is given at 6 months minimum then again at 15 months after which it is annually. I have heard a lot of people recently saying their dogs have been injected at 12 weeks etc and one I know became very ill post an early injection.
  13. Totally agree that the word mature = physical structure as in full adult height and weight not necessarily age. I have always classified dogs like human stages Human birth to 3yrs = Puppy (birth -3yrs) Human 3.5yrs - 7yrs = just call dog (3.5yrs- 9yrs) Human 7.5yrs - 14yrs= Dog = Senior(7.5yrs and above)
  14. They do trolleys http://www.ozgroomingworld.com.au/shop/index.php?route=product/category&path=113 I wonder if anyone has bought one, and what they are like? Exact same product, cheaper and with some excellent modifications are available under different brand name (imported direct by this person)https://www.facebook.com/#!/HabaneroHounds/photos_stream
  15. And if is brought in one State all others will push to have it across the board, but then where are all the staff going to come from in order to police it? Same story as here all the rules but no one to enforce
  16. Certainly is very creative Hey
  17. There are quite a few essential oils which are safe to use as natural repellents for animals, the best ones known to repel flies are peppermint oil/Lavender oil/lemongrass oil/citronells - this one is not liked by dogs so some dogs may become irritated by the scent. Best way is to tie a small peice of cotton fabric in couple places to collar and then add drops to this as needed do not put on dogs skin. I use advantix on my dog and nothing seems to come anywhere near him.
  18. I went back to page one just to see if there might be anything I had not already worked out by now, some good info so wished I had found it 9 months ago :D
  19. What about those who enter puppy bitch and Australian bred? Also you can do puppy sweepstakes or baby puppy sweepstakes and the open show and the champ show all on one day - it is alot though and much running around
  20. I think also it totally depends how you store trolley and how well you look after like any peice of equipment. I regularly oil wheel bearings, sprayed all the hinges with WD40 to help disperse water and prevent rust. As i want it to last I am careful in using it - I do give it a load but have also put better quality wheels on to manage rough terrain. The primary function being a dog containment item I try to always factor that in when using it :) I did not get a Vebo trolley due to them being all aluminium, but the one I did get although still Aluminium is manufactured specifically for the supplier with all the extra care and attention put in. I am also petite and needed light weight item.
  21. the dogs on tour one is grey and is made of some type of heat repellent fabric and never seems to feel hot to touch when car has been parked in sun etc. If I used white it would be black first time I had dogs back in car after run on our black sand (mud) beach or red after walk around local clay soil park
  22. My precious poodle is not only the spitting duplicate of her dad but has his temperment as well, both mum & dad have very placid temperaments but still with that extra personality thrown in, and she is them both, more so dad and has not spent any time with him at all and has same mouth gestures, same attention seeking positioning etc it is so uncanny. But I have to believe that this behaviour is common in poodles anyway so may just be that coming through, however the distinct personality and temperament has to be genetically linked I have met some pretty snappy obnoxious poodles in my day (funnily enough owners were the same)so some of this has to be nurture but hard to determine without a longtitudnal study on a line of a breed to see how they all turned out over successvive generations given the various different environments they were subjected to.
  23. These are great items - https://www.facebook.com/#!/HabaneroHounds?fref=ts
  24. Recently at a dog comp (not show) just a fun event at local park run by council - oh lordy did steam come out of my ears when I overheard these 2 adults criticising this woman who had her 3 dogs on lead in their cute costumes, the 'accusers'- 'That woman should be reported to RSPCA for cruelty to animals!' then it went on and on with all sorts of derogatory remarks until in the end I had to interject -"um excuse me but those beautiful little dogs are actually fine examples of their breed, which are hairless by breed, and skin is discoloured due to freckles etc and they are called Chinese crested dogs becuase they have little tuffs of hair around their head". 'So not abused or unloved or anything else", and then i simply walked away before I said anything else. Hopefully they learnt something that day. It is terrible how people do jump to conclusions before actually knowing full facts or understanding life in general. Love this saying -> 'To ASSUME is to make an ASS out of YOU & ME' :)
