there was an old topic on this situation here is link http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/193423-elevit-for-women/ This may be of interest while specifically for human pregnancy and foetal development http://safefetus.com/search.php/index/details/DrugId/999/TradeName/Elevit/TradeId/1380 also be wary of high dose calcium supplement in last 2 weeks of Bitch's pregnancy as this can cause significant problem during actual whelping of pups.

That is why when making your disaster plan you factor in things like who can I call to tow my trailer or lend me one etc, and with early enough warning this can be done, just becomes problematic if you leave until last minute decision. Plans must be multi functional allow for being home and being away. If away when disaster strikes you need to know who you can call who will help you out etc. As much as we do not want to think about disasters they do exist. Cyclones/earthquakes/mudslides/fires/floods/tornadoes are the main events but there other unnatural disasters that can impact on us.Epidemic or other (hendra virus)situations where properties have to be contained, or even whole communities sealed off, and in this event very hard decisions have to be made especially if you happen to be away from your location when lock down goes into effect. So don't adopt the attitude it won't happen to me PLAN now and prepare, grab a sheet of paper stick on your fridge and start scribbling things down as you think of them, then rewrite and reorganise, and also a good idea as Ash1 said go through the motions to see if it will all come together otherwise in a real situation it cannot be fixed.

The events of last w/e here in QLD highlighted the fact that sometimes NO warning is available for a life threatening event so PLANS have to be made to secure yourself in your home as well as for evacuation. 6 mini tornadoes hit the Bundaberg coast line at a small township located right on the coast (Bargara & Burnett heads) do not be fooled by the word MINI these were full on property ravaging events, no one was aware until they hit, so all that could be done was take cover. Would you know what to do and where the safest place would be to go in your home or elsewhere if this occurred? Research as found the smallest most central room in the property is the best place, and at lowest point, I have an internal dual configuration staircase which has recently been reconstructured, and when this was done we had a 'room safe' constructed, which is under the stairs, reinforced with tie down material concrete was already in place on outer wall at ground level and what in the USA is termed a "crawl space" I have now identified this as my "safe place" due to possibility of structural damage to house shell it is imperative that if you have a 'safe place' either internal or underground externally, let family and friends know in advance so in event of damage authorities can be informed as to where to look as often phones will lose service. Our local paper did a story today on pets & disaster and a couple things they mentioned were making sure your emergency supply kit included newspaper or cat litter and tray, plastic bags for disposal and keeping copies of animal records in sealed plastic bags to prevent water damage.

A friend of mine who has 5 dogs various breeds + other animals they had to evacuate just hitched up a borrowed horse float and loaded all the dogs in tethered with leads and had some of other animals in cages etc, some in boot space of 4WD and away they went on arrival at destination they placed 'C' crates (on loan) and several large size puppy pens with hastily made roof joined together to contain all the animals. Now residing in a huge colourbond shed which has been converted to her abode until they can return to what ever is left of her property

I hope more people complete this survey and get the message out there :) so please copy link and pass on everywhere you can. I know the QLD government definately put in place a 'pet policy' post the 2011 floods and now there are specific centres to take pets and people as well as cages have been stockpiled for need in this type of event, and there are clearer guidelines for those running centres etc. And how pet evacuation will be managed, and this is why during this current flood there has been more people & pets "rescued" as the authorities better understand the importance of the pet bond in these critical events.Especially for the elderly and children who often find that their pets are a strong focal point to get them through such an overwhelming catastrophie

I am pleased to see so many people have put forward their views on this topic and hope everyone completed the survey as it will be valubale research for the future. As for the OP question re staying or leaving with your pets. Definately if evacuation is required Dogs first, and to that end I have prepacked emergency dog and human kit made up with all the things I would need to sustain myself and dogs for a week at least, every month I check contents and replace dog dry food and recycle tinned food etc. Also 2 metal crates are fitted into a canvas bag and sit beside the emergency box. I may never ever need these items but feel if I did I would be prepared. I think preparation prior to an emergency scenario is essential and if you know you may be in line of danger best to go early and if it doesn't eventuate well all good but if it does then better safe then sorry.

Please complete and or pass on to as many dog /other animal lovers you know so a huge selection of respondants can be gathered. Even if you have never been in a situation such as a disaster this survey wants opinions from people as to what they might do if this occurred. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/pets-and-people-preparedness-for-disasters

While published to bring attention to the use of animals in circus performance this photo says it all, most of the dogs appear to be enjoying the "game". but who knows what happens outside of the ring, one hopes they enjoy freedom and interaction without negative re enforcement

Something I recently found out was that if you have anytype of caging system added to your vehicle you have to be careful with your car insurance as in some instances some companies see this as a 'modification' - how I don't know but was enough for them to say it voided policy. Another grey area is the dividers between back seats and boot space area in SUV/4WD etc these must be the original vehicle type and correctly bolted /fitted etc so as not to interfere with air bag deployment where curtain airbags are fitted etc, another insurance problem as well as huge safety issue for human and animal occupants. A recent accident involving a 4WD with dog specific cage fitted in boot space and wall divider installed, the occupant also had 2 young children in back seat in car seats however the use of the correct belt retraints which were roof mounted and came through from back of vehicle were impeded by the cage and divider so I don't think I need to say what happened with the car seats and children in them.

Bitten By A Snake... Waiting For The Vets To Call :(
zeebie replied to miss2's topic in General Dog Discussion
After everything you all have been through of course Spud is going to be 'different' for a while snake bite or no snake bite he has been traumatised and will connect event with owner reaction, and then vet procedures etc, so right now is still in that "fear of unknown" state. Just try to resume things as normal as possible while still keeping close watch on him. -
Reported CM 31.1.13 Pentagon bosses planning puppy brain scanning technology so they can spot the best dogs to train for armed forces project codenamed FIDOS (functional Imageing to Develop Outstanding Service Dogs)supposedly intend to scan using MRI to detect "smartest puppies" through neural imageing feasibility. Ho hum early April fools day joke maybe

Not sure if this link has been shared but it is excellent for explaining genes and colour as well as many other important considerations in breeds. http://www.doggenetics.co.uk/dilutes.html

Could they have been clipped? I know when I use to clip my horses in a rug clip (leaving legs and under belly hair long) the top clipped portion was considerably lighter then under hair. And yes you can get a dilute Wei but here is what ANKC standard allows -> Silver, roe or mouse grey, as well as shades of these colours. Head and leathers generally slightly paler. Only small white markings on chest or toes permitted. Sometimes a more or less defined trace occurs along the back. Dogs with definite reddish yellow markings may only be given the classification good. Brown marking is a serious fault.
-
ANKC standard for poodles states -> brown poodles to have dark amber eyes But where is defination of WHAT amber is, as when you say Green to someone they can imagine dark green/olive green/jade green etc.But how do you describe amber?

. glad to know about the aluminium so thanks. I thought about attaching one to the Kluger but wondered of it would not be as flexible as a stand alone one. Flexible in so much as where you park and where you show yes definately I only use mine when camping or when I go to a show I know I can park at ringside and have it on back of vehicle I have a different model.Gazebos are useful for camping in as well just make sure you have all 4 solid walls and I use a tarp over roof as mine tends to still leak

Ok putting this in general so all who it might affect can see, I know it is listed in the main home page under show news but this is extra info -> this is via a FB friends post -> Just had a phone call from Joy Lanham. Bundaberg shows have been postponed and she asked me to let everyone know that if they still want to enter Allora instead to send entries to her by express post and she will accept them until Thursday - that is the absolute limit to when she can take them. Joy also asked me to post that she has no land line phone and no internet connection and does not know when it will be restored. Her only contact at the moment is by her mobile number. To everyone who reads this please repost so that as many people as possible get to know that Joy has this problem. Not sure how many people could even get to Allora by this date anyways??

Clear fluid coming from ears can be sign of something sinister so VET ASAP where they can look into ear canal with Auroscope and establish where source is. Think about this ear canal goes to brain (via middle ear system)and to back of nose(eutachian tube) if hole in drum then only thing coming out of ear in worst case scenario is cerbral spinal fluid, if not infected in which case it would be yukky colour and smell, or brown and waxy. I have had dog with so much residural water in ear from swimming and bathing it leaked clear fluid for days and needed special medication in ear to dry out this excess.

Just digressing from rare breed colours to clarify topic of coloured dogs/horses and melanoma in same. Unlike the human form of melanoma and the related cause and effect from UV ray exposure causing mutation of pigment and increased melanonin production and then = Melanoma. Dogs get Melanoma in a totally different way from melanocytes (pigment cells)over production and surprisingly enough it is usually in dark pigment area. If it was UV related then why would they get them in the oral cavity? See this site http://www.petwave.com/Dogs/Dog-Health-Center/Skin-Disorders/Melanoma/Types.aspx and sourced from a different site http://www.petplace.com/dogs/malignant-melanoma-in-dogs/page1.aspx ->Malignant melanoma is a tumor arising from melanocytes, which are the cells that produce pigment. The Scottish terrier, Boston terrier, Airedale terrier, cocker spaniel, boxer, springer spaniel, Irish setter, Irish terrier, chow chow, Chihuahua, and Doberman pinscher are the most common breeds affected by melanomas of the skin and toes. The poodle, dachshund, Scottish terrier and golden retriever are the most common breeds affected by melanomas located in the mouth. Other breeds affected include the giant schnauzer and miniature schnauzer, Golden retriever, and Gordon setter. My dog breed is not listed above but having had a cutaneous melanoma removed from his shoulder last year which appeared from one month to next overlaying a dark freckled area of skin, he is bi coloured dog and area where it was is darker pigment, he has double coat and limited sun exposure. Horses particularly Grey horses which have much higher ratio of these tumours when over 10yrs of age, the melanomas they develop are simply cyst like that can exude tarry black fluid but are encapsulated and do not metastise, or if they do it is extremely slow process, unlike they do in humans and dogs. Again no evidence to suggest sunlight plays any part more to do with over production of the melanocytes (pigment cells)

Should change topic to "who has a dry dog" especially given how bad our current weather is here, I have Princess Poodle who thinks rain, mud, and digging are just heaven, whereas other one if he goes to beach he will roll in smelly things, play in surf, romp in the shallows, but is aghast if he has to 'touch' wet grass or heaven forbid get water on him from hose or rain! so both have been having lots of time under doggie dryer in past few days.

What Is Useful Extra To Be Included In A New Show Dog Trailer?
zeebie replied to mummiehund's topic in General Dog Discussion
Saw one recently which had slide out shelf which contained their powered cool box and also generator storage. http://www.cruisingcanines.com.au/ this was brand obviously they had modications made specifically for their needs. Ventilation and insulated Interior lighting cushioned suspension show trolley storage unit/tool/tack box Mini roll out awning to shade if necessary similar set up to those you get now for 4WD that fit onto roof racks. Not sure if standard but one I saw also had a security door inner when outside door was open. Lockable outside doors I am sure this would be standard Personally if I was transporting my dogs in a trailer set up i would add extra rear lights & indicators as well as possibly reinforce rear end protection to protect animals in event of collision -
This is an excellent article written on colour in poodles -> http://nationaldog.com.au/2007/2007_dec/026p.pdf what is more interesting is the fact that to the uninitiated silver poodles are "Grey" and people cannot be convinced that they are not called 'grey' but silver with various shadings. Vetgen have at this stage not definately identified the fading gene in poodles, and all poodles tested show 'DD' irrespective of colour, unlike labs, and other breeds. So they cannot identify the fading gene when testing, Vetgen refer to the graying gene as 'G' and that Kerry Blue Terriers have what they refer to as the 'GG' as they fade out to their eventual 'blue'colour. but this is not the case with poodles, however they are working toward trying to eventually identify more colour gene tags in poodles. So in my girl's case I went to lines that on the sire's side were 100% proven Silver dogs, from a breeder who specifically breeds silver's. On the dam's side there were Silver/blue and whites with proven litter's of silver and blue pups. Despite this genology in colour it is always so interesting that these pups are all born black then fade out to the silver or blue, with the final adult colour totally dependent on each individual dogs colour pattern. with possibility to have deep steel through to silver beige to platnium.
