Survey - Do We Judge A Book By Its (canine) Cover?
zeebie replied to tjhowell's topic in General Dog Discussion
If survey was done with NON dog owners a totally different response would be evoked I imagine, do you intend to cross reference the study using non dog owners as opposed full on dog owners? What sort of qualitative & quantitative data will you use to justify outcome? I have to say the ?cavoodle photo I got most of the beginning questions could be split between agree and totally disagree, however when answering the 'personality/temperament'questions I definately had to remain neutral as has already been stated you cannot judge a book by it's cover nor can you judge a dog just by a photo or preconceived notion of a particular breed, as like humans all dogs are innately different. -
I know this topic has come up previously but could not find it, have read the dimensions of allowable sash /poster for kennel prefix for forthcoming Brisbane Royal, however in a bit of a quandry? While the royal state in their comp rules and regulations you can have this up. I am sure I just read recently in a Dogs QLD magazine that exhibitors must not have any signage evident that shows name of dog or titles or owner when at shows, so would this include RNA shows or just those at Dogs QLD premises?

I have used all of the above on or in my trolley but found all but the crusier type bowl spill when I am pushing trolley especially over rough terrain, as for the crusier bowl either (a) dog tips it over trying to scratch bottom (a real water obsessed dog) or manages to not get any as won't drink from anything not dfilled to top! So now I just take along a huge 4 litre old ice cream container fill it up leave in spot offer dog to drink regularly and empty when day is done.

As I said in my previous post I have a close relative with a BB who is coming up 3yrs old, and OMG the problems firstly it was the teeth crowding with whole double row of teeth on lower jaw (not primary teeth) these were his adult teeth lodged behind each other, then there was the skin fold issues despite strict cleaning, he still got fungal infection, next came a severe reaction to 2nd vaccination and this went on for nearly 4 months of something akin to kennel cough with repsiratory difficulties. Just when they thought they were making progress he was limping and had suspected shoulder muscle problem luckily turned out just growth and it all settled, recently another respiratory infection. so i can atest that this dog has worn a track to vet and cost owner well beyond the $3500 paid for as a puppy on limited register I might add. Relative of this person also purchased BB Bitch from completely different breeder and has had succession of vet visits with latest being 2 operations for the turned in eyelashes and now is told dog may be going blind from constant irritation Oh and don't ever give a BB a large bone to enjoy unless you want to have them barf up constantly everywhere as they cannot cope with the excessive saliva this activity generates so would not surprise me at all to see a vet office with regular BB coming through the doors spose it depends on where you live and the BB population as well, as I know in my relatives case they were recommended to a particular vet because the vet specialises in BB and other Brachy breeds. Don't get me wrong I do like the breed having had a Boxer myself, but it takes a very special person to own, love and care for these breeds. A lot of people would have seen the You tube profile of a certain AMERICAN bulldog a smaller lighter framed version of the BB who wave rides, surfs, skateboards etc and think oh yes must have one of those, sorry but OZ is way to hot for these dogs to do this type of full on activity. Sort of same phenomomen that Red Dog created with the kelpies.

Dogs Who Visit Hospitals And Nursing Homes
zeebie replied to Loving my Oldies's topic in General Dog Discussion
Not sure in Victoria or if things have changed but I do know that my dog was required to have health screening yearly with regular interim worming etc to comply with the requirements of Delta and he was only visiting community situations. I had to have my vet sign off on a health screen form. -
Dogs Who Visit Hospitals And Nursing Homes
zeebie replied to Loving my Oldies's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes I also volunteered with Delta with my older boy and we went through a very well run accreditation process before he got his stamp of approval with official neck scarf and my T/Shirt plus visible photo ID we were allocated a High care/low care facility which we visited regularly for 2 years, he looked forward to going as much as the residents looked forward to having him come and see his tricks and interact etc. We then also took on visiting an interlectual disability/mental health unit and again strict criteria was in place and as many of these clients were extremely volatile on occaisons, it was amazing how settled they were when my dog visited and the staff always asked if we could come more often! Today on my way home from the show with my precious poodle we stopped at a local park for the dogs to stretch their legs and go toilet etc and it happened a group of residents from a local nursing home were on a picnic with family outing, well their faces lit up and all the Oh's and Rrrrss etc nearly brought tears to my eyes, and of course dogs had to have pats and say hello etc and one lady said "Oh you have made my day to see a poodle again since I lost mine my world as stopped", she just kept repeating this and her daughter told me on the quite that her mum had not been so bright and so excited in many months so they were very thankful for the experience. Animals in retirement homes etc are a very important part of continuing normality for the people who find themselves having to spend their final days in these environments, so sad that for a variety of reasons most do not allow resident animals. You only have to read the regulations regarding this to understand how bogged down in red tape it is -
I suggest lots of research before buying this breed they have many and varied problems being true brachecephalic breeds and this is someothing a lot of new owners do not understand about care of face and neck folds, importance of keeping cool (head start if in victoria), they over heat very quickly They are usually very good with temperament providing right breeding and puppy raising etc. A close family member has one and he is excellent with nephews and neices and other dogs and cats, bit whimpy if anything, He weighs 30kg at 3yrs of age and so not a light dog when he jumps and boy can he propel himself straight up off ground he can knock people over easily if not expecting this behaviour. he is also very excitable when he meets my dogs and being small breeds has sometimes nearly injured them with his huge front paws very unintentional just exhuberance, but if the primary carer is going to be walking this dog they need to understand how strong they can be, they are pure muscle. There is a breeder in QLD who I would throughly recommend her dogs are excellent temperaments, well socialised pups and good breed lines and she will orgaise interstate sales. Also the family looking at purchasing this breed may not realise they come with quite a hefty price tag If they are set on this type of breed maybe a French Bulldog would be better.

Do dog owners think that having one bitch as a pet who is never around other dogs affect the estrous cycle? as opposed having a bitch constantly in a pack with other cycling bitches and stud dogs in kennels etc? At what stage/age would you really start to become concerned if bitch has not had first season?

Same thing happened month ago and still not sure how he did it but big slice out of largest pad, cleaned wound applied paw paw ointment on guaze pad and vet wrapped up to first ankle joint left on for 2 days then checked rewashed reapplied ointment and wrapped, just have to watch the vet wrap as if it gets too wet it shrinks and becomes constricting. within a week all was healed. Mine is a good boy no trying to chew wrap off but it has been used on another dog and I put several rounds of tape over top for extra security as this one was a chewer. for excessive bleeding you can use cornflour or plain cooking flour as an immediate coagulant (stops bleeding) or condy's crystal (don't touch with bare fingers stains them brown), there is also a specialised wool which is seaweed based and acts as a styptic but not cheap, firm compression over spot will usually see most capillary bleeding stop fairly quickly.

Dog attacks on other dogs or humans are becoming all to frequent 2 months ago an elderly lady in my area was walking her 2 small X breed dogs on her usual afternoon walk, a neighbour who lives at corner of her street arrived home from work allowing his 2 x breed (staffy X similar breed who knows) to exit his vehicle on the footpath, these 2 dogs immediately set upon the 2 small dogs by running across a main road to other path to get to them both were fatally injured within seconds of the attack, the elderly owner had a serious heart attack and was rushed to hospital, on return home she has not left her house and is severely traumatised. There was an investigation and subsequently these dogs were declared "dangerous dogs" with all the trappings that goes with it, fence height, signs, restrictions etc etc. There is a court case pending not sure of details. But I would have thought the dogs would have been impounded in the interim, and they had to have had 3 strikes previously to incur the DD label. Has it made any difference to the owners behaviour not in the least he still arrives home whenever allowing dogs to jump off back of ute and run up and down path, still allows them to run free on local oval, and seems, despite nurmerous complaints to council no one is able to intervene. So while councils are busily running around having meetings and taking submissions to introduce fancy new regulations for dog breeders to comply with, nothing seems to be happening on the other end of the spectrum about employing enough qulaified people to actually police rules set down regarding these types of situations, and dog registrations and caring for them etc.

Very happy to report this girl has now gone to an adoring new home
-
Strangely enough I have never been to this particular area in Victoria only around Benidgo and Ballarat, and I keep getting the strongest feeling that like Waggit, Cyan ran with her and when Waggit was injured this just made Cyan more fearful but the journey continued along the train line, so by now she could be a very very long way from the original area and Euroa keeps popping up and I honestly do not know if a railway line even goes through this place

Trifecta trip on boat takes 12 hours approximately and that is not including pre registering dog beforehand so add extra time for this etc. personally if it is absolutely essential dog goes I would not risk subjecting it to this added stress why not fly as it is quicker (1 hour)and dog would not require eating or drinking in the short time frame. Way less stress and around same cost you could arrange to have someone meet dog at plane arrival if you were still wanting to go on the ferry yourself. also take into account the vetting requirements now in place for all dogs travelling to Tasmania http://www.dpiw.tas.gov.au/inter.nsf/Attachments/LBUN-86G9WH/$FILE/dogs.pdf

I'm Friends With The Judge (or I Am Paying Them)...
zeebie replied to Dobecrazy's topic in General Dog Discussion
As someone has said in another thread it should be what is on the lower end of the lead being judged not the person holding the lead :) As for grooming and 'styling' and product use this should be banned and basic dog should be being judged for conformation only, not all the tissy up mess about which in most cases within five seconds of being in the ring and exam by the judge the styling is totally wrecked anyway. They have a 6/6a, a 7/7a and 8/a section but to date I have not seen any of these sections offered would certainly encourage more inexperienced show people to have a go and also give them a chance of actually winning an event as 'non professional' dog people. Having only shown for past 12 months I have listened alot, asked questions, taken feedback and watched closely to try to improve my handling and I definately fall into the catergory of being out there only to have fun and friendship of like minded people, winning has only been a bonus and never in my wildest dreams did I ever eexpect to have a dog who is now only 13 points off her Australian champion title in only 12 months of showing. And I am definately a Mr Bean of the show ring maybe they just give me the sympathy vote. -
I visited the wonderful but hot Township of Bundaberg QLD and enjoyed the hospitality and shows put on by the canine club there over Easter. Very impressed with my mini poodle girl who managed to get Best of Breed and Junior in show on saturday night open show, following up with just a First placing on Saturday as tail was down, really feeling the heat as being Group 7 we always end up last on in the rings and somehow always at hottest part of day 12 - 1pm not good for dogs or humans But she stood out once again in sweltering heat on Monday lunch time to take BOB/Bitch Challenge and State Bred in Group, first time ever in General specials so another learning curve for us both, no luck this time but happy to have won what we did :)

And report transaction to the Federal police who will definately follow up as more leads they get the easier it is to catch these people, especially when they can get hold of internet ISP numbers attached to emails
-
Yep is simply amazing how many people I know in the dog world who have multiple rescues of mixed breeds who use to talk to me until I got a pedigree dog and started showing her Suddenly I had leprosy apparently, and my donations of dog blankets, toys and food were no longer needed.

Who is that Zeebie?.... The ever gorgeous 'Alice' Aus Ch Jenuin Alice in wonderland under 2yrs and took out 1st place for lure coursing 2012, field champion title,Lure courser of merit title & certificate (highest attainable title),as well as 2 trophies for show & field & endurance lure course trophy.
-
We currently have a miniature poodle here in QLD that has just obtained its lure coursing title which is very difficult to obtain for any dog. This dog is also currently a top show dog and just competed at the Sydney Royal this week. Considering this sport was original set up for sight hounds, so goes to prove poodles can scent and sight with the best

Just to clarify there are the Tibetin Spaniels and the Tibetin Terriers. The Tibetin spaniels are shown in Group 1 toys and the tibetin Terriers in Grp 7 Non sporting.Pics below show the Tibetin Spanial in first pic and the Terrier in 2nd pic.
-
If you look at the history of most of the dogs thrown into Gr 7 (Non sporting dogs) most had significant history in their origins such as the British Bulldog - bull baiting, tibetan Terriers were herding dogs, Great Danes hunters of wild boar and deer. We often feel like the left overs on a plate after a meal, as many of the dogs in this group do indeed belong in other groups, and it is by far the hardest group to judge with the variety of breeds and differences etc.How can you possibly compare a tiny toy poodle to a great Dane or Sharpei, or a Lhaso Apso to a Dalmation. For those not familiar here is list of those dogs who are currently placed in Grp 7 at shows in Australia. Boston Terrier,British Bulldog,Canaan Dog,Chow Chow,Dalmatian,Eurasier,French Bulldog,German Spitz (Mittel & Klein), Great Dane,Japanese Spitz,Keeshond,Lhasa Apso,Peruvian Hairless Dog (Large),Peruvian Hairless Dog (Medium),Peruvian Hairless Dog (Small),Poodle (Miniature,Poodle (Standard),Poodle (Toy),Schipperke,Shar Pei, Shi Tzu, Tibetian Terrier and Xoloitzcuintle!!!

Brisbane - Best Councils For Dog Owners?
zeebie replied to Longclaw's topic in General Dog Discussion
Main Brisbane City council area is huge and you can legally have 2 dogs on the premises, but they allow maximum of 4 with special permit -
woooo you must have an easy open door as my fridge has such strong suction especially if door is recently opened and then closed again. rather then use a lock train to leave it by placing deterrent on fridge, rag soaked in scent off tired to handle, I have 2 entrances to my kitchen area and both dogs know there is an invisable line they cannot cross they stay on the boundary at all times for their protection and mine. so using a baby gate at entrance to kitchen may solve problem as dog would not be able to get in their at all, if entrance is too wide for baby gate just get a pen and place in flat style and what I have done when visiting is use chairs to keep it from falling over if they jump up on it etc. Some examples here http://www.things4yourdog.com/pet-gates

How To Find A Dog-friendly Rental In Melbourne ?
zeebie replied to LabsRock61a's topic in General Dog Discussion
Sometimes you can get a place where there is an elderly owner who needs someone to live in and help out and they are often more then happy to have pet as company. so you could go this angle, my daughter had to move to victoria for a year with her work and she lived in a granny flat attached to main house and did shopping /cooking and other little household tasks in exchange for very cheap rent and the family having peice of mind that there mum had an adult close handy in case of trouble. Her dog was a great asset and when she was returning to QLD the family were sad to see her go. there is also another organisation which is house sitters Australia, http://www.aussiehousesitters.com.au/ they have a data base with lots of people registered who need long term house sitting and or pet sitting it does cost to register but it might be a short term fix. http://www.happyhousesitters.com.au/?gclid=CMrFwvvz_rUCFQExpgod1T8AXA Also try this particular real estate who specialises in pet friendly accomodation http://www.rentalrealestate.com.au/index.cfm?pagecall=content&ContentID=61684&MenuItemID=92591&subject=Pet_Friendly_Search
