  4. Many years back there was a VERY dodgy abbatoir in the QLD Darling downs area, and what this manufacturer put in his HOME BRAND dog food was disgusting, so heavens knows what went into the mince and sausages, and the cuts of meat he supplied to various local small butcher shops (pre the BIG supermarket takeover. It was in the era before my dog food knowledge base was broadened to only feeding 'good food' to the dogs, times were tough, money was short on a student budget and so I purrchased the "home brand" product for 60 cents glossy label with nice healthy looking cattle dog on label and all the ingredietns read like a text book. Until you opened the can..... Absolute mush mostly foul smelly water based with huge clumps of hair, rabbit ears, wild animal tails (Rabbit ,kanga etc)hoof, pig snouts and of course this added to make the weight correct for packaging and at the bottom would be small amount of 'minced' offal. so disgusted I took several tins to be professionally examined and the report was horrific and not long after his business was closed down and he was charged on many many counts. I cannot say with any degree of certainty that there was or wasnt cat/dog also included in this concoction, but in this instance it certainly would not have suprised me and I was so glad I was vegetarian.
  5. Yes I have spoken with Lhok via PM Yes various number of "assistant dog" organisations are out there hence the reason the government stepped in to make the accreditation process more complient etc as previously there were many instances where people were entering public situations with rats/cats/birds/reptiles and dogs stating under the discrimination act "you cannot evict me as I have a service animal" After a couple of very high level court battles in which the person with the 'service animal' won and a large sum of money was exchanged, precedents were set and the changes started to take place regarding who can train, what quals they must have, who can be deemed a registered organisation for training of such animals etc, and various other criteria were put in place after lengthy consultation and recommendations. So the Guide dog act was amended to include the Service DOG (at this stage no other service animal) but provision has been made for this to be amended if a case arises. However the person with the service dog must have a recognised accreditation card for the animal and comply with certain criteria etc including travel card for public transport and only a few organisations have met flight criteria with their animals to actually travel on board with their owner. these are listed on the various airlines websites. The one grey area at present is if people travel between states/territories they are not always recognised by the officials in these places which can be very disconcerting. So unlike guide dogs who wear a particular harness and medallion on their collar and most times it is obvious their handler is visually impaired, service dogs have a leash and a different coloured coat depending on organisation they are with which makes it very difficult to recognise these dogs especially when there are many different sizes and breeds used. Usually all the dogs for hearing impaired have a fluro orange lead and collar with wording on the leash "Lions Hearing dog" Finally YES you can train up your own dog and with assistance from a highly skilled well respected person in the field get your dog accredited, this is no easy task and the practical assessment is challenging and if after nearly 2 years of training and bonding with your dog it is failed it is totally soul destroying, so from the outset the right breed, right temperment, right match between dog & handler as in what the dog will be used for will totally support a postive outcome for both.

  7. Definately get your dogs/cats/equine chips checked regularly. and yes notification were sent out to vets and letters to any owners who had registered their animal with the national pet registry etc. If your chip does not ready Virbac will replace at their cost but personally I think I would want a different brand. ;) Also any animal who is registered be it with local council or dog association must have new paperwork submitted with stat dec declaring reason for m/c number to change and this is with a cost which Virbac should pay for! I have heard of one instance where a whole lot of DNA testing was done on an animals and when this debacle occurred with m/c fail poor person had to have all DNA redone with new number
  8. Not sure if this has been discussed but apparently the Virbac chips have been failing a 'bad 'batch came through in 2010 so from around June 2011 onwards these chips which were used worked initially and now after around 18months do not read http://www.savingpets.com.au/2013/09/thousands-of-pet-microchips-faulty/ so if you think your pet has one of this brand get it checked and if need re chip.
  9. Without going back through all the messages just a couple things 1. Any service dog first and foremost must meet a STRICT temperment selection criteria, 2. The dogs trained must now come via a recognised government accredited organisation and if someone wants to submit their own dog for testing of suitability this is possible but they do have to pay and also much stricter criteria is attached. 3. Often guide dogs who do not make the grade as such can be retrained as service dogs and would certainly fit your criteria in height and weight. 4. You do not want an overly strong dog who could potentially pull you over or if in a w/c pull it too fast and this is all part of the 'extra'training these dogs go through. Weimaraner, GSP and a couple other breeds have been trained in canine assisted mobility. Each service dog is selected and matched with the handler according to particular need, for instance many hearing impaired recipients have Terrier breeds, and scenting dogs used for seizure alert and Hypoglyceamic detection are chinese crested, silky terrier mixes and spanials/beagles etc. So may I suggest you talk with your training organisation or if you did not go through a recognised one initially might be a good idea to check out a few accredited ones for particular information regarding your states rules etc. Oh and ideally with service dogs usually it is not a good idea to have another dog in the house as this can distract from their job, I DO HAVE a service dog and he will retire next month at 10yrs of age, however in my personal situation my new wonder dog (the poodle)will take over early next year and I have been given permission to keep my first little man as every situation is different and in my case 2 heads are better then one for now and eventually my older little man will be content to just lounge around in the sun and not go everywhere with me and my new working dog :)
  10. Would be interesting to know how many of the dogs affected by the products are pedigree as opposed X breeds. There are a couple of therory's associated with the 'jerky' products which are mainly fowl based (chicken/duck) one is the initial salmonella or other bacterial contamination of the flesh prior to curing, and secondly the possible use of certain curing agents involved in the process i.e. glycerol (derived from potentially toxic plant and is a sweetner simalar to saccharin) and this product will definately affect humans if consumed in abundance as it does with dogs by causing renal and gastrointestinal problems. Another is the deadly Xylitol which if substitued for Glycerol is certain death for dogs Then there is the third possibility any dog that already has compromised renal function often seen in elderly dogs and those who have undiagnosed Renal dysplasia (RD)and these conditions are not known to the owners will certainly become unwell and possibly die if challenged often enough with these 'jerky' products. I personally will not purchase any tinned wet food (who knows what's in it) or dried food that is imported from anywhere as it is subjected to stringent chemical additives to ensure no harmful grain fungi or live pests are brought into Australia, these products leave residue which is toxic to dogs, we cannot always be certain of the country of origins control standards on packaging and source of supposed content. As for 'treats' these are given in moderation and are all natural products home prepared. There are several websites which can be accessed to explore more on any of above:- http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-news/chinese-dog-treats-glycerin/ http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/SafetyHealth/ProductSafetyInformation/ucm319463.htm http://www.vcahospitals.com/main/pet-health-information/article/animal-health/xylitol-toxicity-in-dogs/4340 (Xylitol) http://www.dogenes.com/rdfacts1.pdf (Renal dysplasia)
  11. My nearly 10yr old poochie had similar and was having some trouble with dry food etc, off to vet and she looked at teeth and said none "bad" or infected etc but lots of plague build up and so needed scale and clean under anesthetic, one which was nearly black, a molar was what I thought would need extraction, but nope now they are all perly white, breathe all good again and all up including antibiotic cover for unrelated problem was around $400
  12. Urgent update on this w/e's dog sports spectacular at Durack, looks like it will be a very busy w/e so allow extra time, expect crowds !!!! We wish to advise Exhibitors of some changes at Durack for Sunday 6th and Monday 7th October. On Saturday 5th, the Dog of the Year Support Shows are being held in the usual rings, but on Sunday and Monday, all conformation judging will be done on the same side of the grounds. The ring arrangement is as follows: Group 1 – Ring 9 Group 2 – Ring 8 Group 3 – Ring 7 Group 4 – Ring 4 Group 5 – Ring 5 Group 6 – Ring 6 Group 7 – Ring 3 This will mean that all exhibitors in Groups 3, 5 and 6 will need to move their gazebos to the appropriate rings. This change is necessary as Obedience Trials and Rally O Trials will be held in Rings 11 – 16. A ring plan was published in the September Dog World magazine and is also available on the All Dog Sports Spectacular Facebook page. There will also be an Agility and Jumpers Trial in Rings 19 and 20, Flyball races in Rings 21 and 22, Weight-Pulling near the Training Ring, Lure Coursing in the large herding area and a Retrieving Trial in the adjacent paddocks. With conformation entries of 746 on Sunday and 698 on Monday, when parking and setting up your gazebos, we ask you to be considerate of others and only use the space you require. There will be allocated spaces for Breed Stalls and Sponsors’ Stalls along the walkway from in front of the Caretaker’s house all the way to the Function Room as well as from Ring 6 to 9 on the opposite side of the ring area. Unfortunately, this will limit the space available for your gazebos but you will still be able to set up behind them or near the rings, as usual. During the weekend, there will also be demonstrations of other dog sports and interviews with dog-related organisations in Rings 1 and 2. There will also be static displays of other dog sports, along with a panel of Vets/Vet students in the Judges’ Training Room. As this weekend is being used as a fundraiser for the McGrath Foundation, you will be asked to give a gold coin donation either as you enter the gate or during the day, on both days. If you have any concerns during the weekend, members of the Event Managers and Stewards Committee will be extremely visible in their Hi-Viz PINK vests and should be able to help you. We hope it will be a great weekend, so invite your friends and neighbours to come along and find out about all these dog sports. Regards, Rob Harrison
  13. http://www.brisbanecityonline.com.au/things_to_do/dog_friendly_parks_brisbane_southside.html Amamoor Park dog friendly camping is brillant http://www.brisbanecityonline.com.au/things_to_do/dog_friendly_camping_bush.html Apparently there is a massive park down behind the marsden highschool Lakeside drive, you can walk from there all the way to Waterford shops there is also a creek. there are also many back streets that go down to the Logan river which has lots of walking trails along the banks and some shallow area's where dogs can swim etc.
  14. I purchased one of those straps from car place (super cheap auto) which has small ratchet on it and goes around trolley easily then I pull tight to secure so makes it hold together and I can also lift with this as well
  15. Just a couple pics one is of jap spitz other is Samoyed so you can see the distinct similarty between the 2 yours looks more samoyed then spitz?
  16. As far as I was told no camping available ?????? Not sure if this is changed but there is a great pet friendly caravan park close by http://www.mossvalevillagecaravanpark.com.au/
  17. When my mini poodle pup came home I had a large puppy playpen with a cheap blue tarpaulin on floor uner it and paper in one area + the airline crate she came home in and she would go into crate of own undertaking to sleep and come out and wander around pen and use paper to toilet this was an interim situation due to introducing to other older dog etc. when I went out I actually took her with me in the crate and I had a small camping fan which I attached to door to keep her cool, we were able to let her out several times during day while I was out and she was very hppy to be around me and other dog etc, so i am sure if you took her in crate to school carnival park vehicle in shade and use fan etc and you could be close by you could even have her in your shelter etc. Not sure how your school sports carnivals are done but ours are on an open field sports facility away from school where all schools meet at and we have gazebos up etc just like dog shows except we are watching the kids LOL so I am sure she would be fine to accompany you for the day or as someone else suggested maybe breeder would take her for the day, I would not want to leave a toy size very young poodle alone unsupervised for that long.
  18. I have one from habnero hounds is a single berth but has divider (removalable) 2 small breed dogs would fit, I have 1X small 1X medium they do fit but the bigger dog really can't stretch out so I put them together without divider, the trolley is double riverted throughout, plenty of reinforcing bars around the sides to hang water buckets on etc, non slip floor and top, folds small and handles unscrew to drop down so makes easier to get into smaller car boot etc. Very lightweight, wheels sturdy although pushing on loose dirt or thick grass with weight in can be tough. width between bars excellent and door latches have facility to add padlock if required, if latch accidently opens door won't open unless human hand realeases extra security latch. I love the C crates and the Vebo only difficulty with both is the weight to lift in and out of my vehicle.
  19. My dear friend runs a supberb dog friendly B&B in outer western suburb near Canberra stadium and she would gladly mind dog for day or more for small fee she has fully enclosed dog proof set up for just such occaisons. I can definately give you details in PM if required. When we travelled up through Dubbo and visited the zoo they had kennels at entrance where we could leave dog locked safely in climate control area. In Brisbane I can certainly put you in touch with someone who would be willing to daycare your dog in safe enclosed kennel and exercise yard and is short commute from her place to Brookfield and all other area's including central Brisbane etc.
  20. This is a sheet to fill in and keep in your vehicle in plain site in case of emergency, and hope it is never needed but in event it is all relevent info is there.
  21. Yep same in QLD and of all the Ag shows I have done I have always been issued with one pass =one dog however when I needed to have someone come with me to help set up/groom etc there was no problem with her entering in same vehicle as myself, I think the gate people are reasonably flexible really.
  22. I know the Royal Brisbane show is long over but anyone wanting to see all the results of every section of the dog events here is link to results site, just use the individual drop down boxes to find your selection-> http://www.royalqueenslandshow.com.au/results/
  23. BIG show in small area so be prepared to share :)
  24. Very similar to vet beds material I have used the same item obtained from medical suppliers and used under patients where spillage is likely keeps person dry sort of same system as baby nappies, come in different sizes small sheet or large and qty huge pack or small your choice (Medi pads). Used when flying dog in base of crate also when away at friends as toileting floor mat with old plastic tarp spread under to protect carpet.
  25. There are small electric device/hoist similar to wheel chair use for lifting any item onto roof racks, also there is now a lady doing rounds of shows with fully decked out grooming van. There are some excellent 12V fan units you can plug into vehicle and have amazing cord length, check out boating/Camping store outlets. Agree with the vegetarian food options
