  1. Yep $10 -$15K should cover depending on $$ exchange rate at time, and make sure you are absolutely certain of breeding lines and place you acquire dog from. Have dog DNA tested in country of origin regardless if pup or adult. Pups do better with the travel and quarrantine etc, but some don't And after all this expense if you are unlucky enough to have the dog refused entry once here and in quarrantine due to an issue arising as happened to someone I know then it is all lost, where is animal insurance when you need it, I have tried on several occaisons to acquire this type of insurance and no one will give it????? And yet throughbred horses can be insured ? Another scenario was a stud springer spanial which was exported from UK (with owners)to Melbourne served its time and then arrived in Brisbane only to escape its crate while being transferred by grund crew ran off into swamp land and was found some weeks later deceased.
  2. Just with reference to my original post please if you have any information to submit before the closing date get to and put your thoughts in writing to address the various proposal statements listed on the link. these must be relevent otherwise they will not be even considered. I have exported and re imported a dog and for my own peace of mind and dogs protection I went the extra mile and had him vaccinated against rabies, I am now thankful I did with the current Lyssavirus ramping up and with the rabies vaccine giving protection. We have one set of importation rules but many of the countries will not accept our dogs unless they pass specific tests as these countries do not currently have these diseases as an example NZ has zero Heartworm and Q tick therefore all dogs must be tested and titre must fall below a certain level or be negative to allow entry into country. UK & the European nations all have their own spin on things as well.
  3. True this will happen and I do not think they have taken into consideration the amount of problems it will cause with all livestock having to be airfreighted into the one place, but it is going to be a revenue raiser no doubt!
  4. Currently the Australian DAFF is reviewing policies related to importation of dogs/cats and semen and request expression of interest from the public regarding proposed changes etc. This is the link to the website http://www.daff.gov.au/ba/ira/current-animal/dogs_and_cats this is link to draft proposal in word format - http://www.daff.gov.au/__data/assets/word_doc/0006/2177862/draft_review_dogscats.doc It is imperative to fully understand the ramifications of changing quarrantine periods to a shorter time frame and the amount of diseases we are currently being protected from entering our borders by the strict protocol adhered to, while quarrantine of pets arriving with travellers is annoying it does serve an essential purpose. The only aspect I think would help would be to have other facilities for quarrantine available within Australian states other then Sydney/Melbourne and Perth.

  8. Not just the townies going rural it is common place in suburbia, more and more people (can't be gender or age specific) are acquiring these huge crossbreeds - bullmastiff RRB, bullarab X etc buying themselves the huge vehicle to match and planting dog in cage on back and off bush bashing every opportunity! Between these occaisonal pig and other wildlife attacks the dogs get let loose in backyards to go crazy without proper stimulation barking and setting off every other dog in neighbourhood (tough when you are a night worker), then we have the roamers and poopers, massive poops and left for the school kids to trek through when walking home, the worst case was 3 weeks ago when my local irresponsible neighbour's 2 PB wolfhounds yet again roamed the streets entering my property chasing my daughters beautiful Burmilla cat who is never let out of house except for an early moring yard stroll and sunning spot, these dogs seized an opportunity and set upon her, my next door neighbour witnessed but could do nothing with 2 small children in tow I found the cat 4 days later deceased in yard of another neighbouring property - very distressing for all, informed council oh yes lots of complaints registered, council spoke to owners yet again, and when I asked what will happen now they have killed an animal, oh too much paperwork and officer was going away so if I wanted to get a statement done and have the witnesses do same they would follow up but the lack of enthusiasm from this council officer was such I just left it and have done formal record so if these dogs are seen off lead and out of confines of yard again definate legal action will be taken. I have also since acquired a driving whip - one used for carriage driving has stiff long handle and short fly end which I am now carrying every time I venture outside my property with my dogs this will ensure I hope that any dog coming within trouble distance of mine will be deterred, and if the law wants to harrass me for injuring someone elses dog then so beit as I am not going to put up with all these irresponsible owners any longer and it seems that the laws that have been created to prevent such problems are not being policed effectively as no one is employed to routinely randomly circulate troublesome areas. Just on another note posters be warned if anything happens to dogs or other livestock ie injuries/death etc and it can be proven that you posted a comment of intent you end up being prosecuted Even without use of location or names etc, as more and more legal cases are citing internet comments on open forums and FB etc as evidence in prosecution cases - very sadwhen the innocent end up being the victim
  9. Definately go with a metal crate secured by a good method so it cannot slide around in event of braking or heaven forbid accident. I use a small dog crate fan which operates on batteries and hangs on front of crate or side and dogs love it has safety mesh so they can't access and injure themselves. with the crate you have option of collapsing flat if not using at any time and removing from vehicle if dog not travelling. Happy travels :)
  10. Sadly it is just a fact of age with little dogs that things start to go wrong, his serum glucose is a bit low which could mean he is having low blood sugar episodes which in turn can cause seizures. Some of the liver function tests are elevated which could be related to a long time unhealthy diet or maybe he is a little over weight now (hard to tell when you don't know history of dog etc) also increases indicate high fat content in diet and an aging liver not coping. another aspect is if this is happening more often when he is sleeping he could have sleep aponea which means he is breathing more shallow and the oxygen/carbon dioxide level in his blood changes and this would trigger an event as his brain became deprived of oxygen rich blood, not much you can do about this one again is just the aging process. To test the low blood glucose theory, try giving him a pre bedtime snack of milk with a little added sugar and if he has no more events problem solved. as for the other little dog his sounds like events being brought on by lack of oxygen as he is active then suddenly drops and it is similar to a fainting episode in humans we faint to restore the blood to the brain, he could be in very early stage heart failure and therefore not getting enough circulating oxygen rich blood and the poor old brain is coping the worst of it. Fix for this little fellow would be less activity a more sedentary lifestyle as hard as it would be.
  11. For what it is worth 2 possibles - 1. allergies causing overwhelming immune response, trial a total specialised natural (no grains)diet and see if condition improves. 2. Renal dysplasia have DNA sampling done by dog genes in Canada (they are online have a read up on condition - http://www.terrificpets.com/articles/102126165.asp It can be so frustrating when this happens but I would be inclined to only treat the dog symptomatically and relieve any distress not cause more distress. Have bloods been done to exclude tumour markers, raised renal function tests, abnormal full blood count to exclude leukaemia or liver disease etc?

    Pooing On Bed

Had same problem I took cover off the bed and washed in lavender wash and returned it no more soiling on it, also placed a cheap blue plastic tarp down with paper and immediately this was accepted as toilet. now at 7months we run outside no problem, but she still has downstairs inside loo for when I am at work :0
  13. 100% brilliant cannot recommend highly enough, my dog was 6yrs old when he was introduced to this and grasped the concept very quickly and worked out very fast that crate meant lots of fun and would actually entice me and self initiate a game by grabbing toy running into crate and then racing up hall and back into crate etc. My new pup modelled off him and has learnt that crate is a good place to be and also loves all our "race to crate" drop in crate games etc. Made car travel so much easier when I had installed airline crate on back seat for her to travel in and she would just go straight in no problem she obviouls transferred knowledge of inside crate and all the fun to this car crate meaning same thing and had no problem when we needed to fly she was very content in her crate.
  14. Enrol in a reputable dog obedience school and start now, should have been doing this from 16 weeks old, it sounds like this dog is the ALPHA dog in the house whereas you should be Not sure where you live in Brisbane but I can highly recommend a couple of dog training /obedience clubs via PM if you require on Northside and southside. My neighbour had the exact same problem with her staffy and when they moved in did exactly same thing bought a 2nd dog "for company" for the crazy boy, this turned all wrong now they have 2 crazies, so with some advice from me they took both off to be desexed and also to obedience and now the girl is doing really well at agility and the boy (who was the worst offender) is walked twice a day, goes to classes and works like a trooper with all the other dogs whereas in beginning was fear aggressive toward them now has the biggest 'smile on his face' lots tail wagging etc. Their inital problem was letting dog sleep on their bed, trying to keep it from barking by giving treats and rewarding so the poor dog had no pack structure and no boundaries, now it has both it is a calmer, happier dog and a complete trun around from the 2yr old crazy that moved in a year ago. As for kids you may need to have an enclosure or gated area where kids and dogs can look but not touch if he does not settle. Don't make the same mistake with your little girl, get her to puppy class now and start modelling desired behaviour as you will find his behaviour will deterioate as she gets older due to the competitive nature wanting your attention could lead to bigger problems.
  15. Re timid behaviour & schooling usually best idea to get dogs socialised early is to attend "puppy preschool" but by 16 weeks this is a bit late and also the 'critical age' for all things scary in the dog world, things that happen now are automatically stored for future reference, like thunder storms, loud trucks/buses, crowds of people, dog confrontation etc and the list goes on. So with not having attended puppy preschool and acquiring your new dog at a important milestone, you need to get her out there and do lots of introduction to the world with lots and lots of positive reinforcement treats + verbal "good girl", pats and lots of "lets make this fun". Also if you have a dog park enclosed nearby you can take her and stay on other side of fence just walk around perimeter let her see the activity maybe smell dogs through fence etc, this may take time but eventually she will settle. Another idea is if you know someone with a puppy same age go for play dates and gradually introduce more people and puppies (up to 4) ntil she is comfortable. I would certainly be enrolling in local obedience puppy classes NOW and this way you will be getting her use to other dogs and people in a very controlled environment, remember the Kelpie background is work, work, and more work so she will get very bored if not constantly challenged both mentally and physically. The last thing you want is a timid dog turning into a fear aggressive dog so time for action is now :) I also had a timid dog (not kelpie) and used all above and she is now doing very well at 6months old, although it has been a labour intensive job it has been well worth it. As for the crating, I am old school pre the crating phase, but do have crates both dogs know exactly what they are and when they have to go to crate, both have been trained using "crate games" method and I do not ever shut the door, they choose to go in if they wish, and if I direct them to the crate they go in and stay in without door closed until I release them. Their crates are like sanctury caves for them. I work my dogs on the principle of "Good choice" philosophy and this has been very successful. Good luck with your new pup and kelpie breeds love agility!!
  16. http://www.pethomesdirect.com.au/Dog-Products/Dog-Crates-Tents-Covers/ in Brisbane sell them, they may have outlet in other states as well. You may need to contact them as not shown on their online site. Also other place I have seen them advertised on Amazon but they are metal and come from O/s so probably too expensive.
  17. Search of vet practice registration board of Victoria = WATERFORD PARK VIC 3658 Tel:(04) 8837-2287 DR CATRIONA MARY HANLON
  18. Did you know dogs can get melanoma? Certain breeds are much more prone to this happening, these occur in dogs eyes (hard to detect until shift of cornea occurs), in the nail beds of paws, and in the mouth - just when you thought those brown/black sots were normal! the final area is cutaneous (skin) area. Usually the eye/paw & mouth are malignant. The skin lesions iare usually benign. If noticed early and removed there is much better chance of recovery. I have just had this horrible experience with my 8 yr old small breed dog, having found on his shoulder after a bath session this small black area on top of an existing brown skin freckle, initially when seen I thought it was a tick, closer exam revealed no it looked like dead skin, off to vet and removal -> pathology has demonstrated it as a cutaneous melanoma with large excision area which showed no active cells therefore it has been successfully treated. Proves that we need to regularly inspect our precious puppies to ensure nothing sinister is happening under their coats, in their feet or mouth and eyes. Especially lighter skin dogs with double coats, very hard to find these tell tale early signs.
  19. English Springer spanial /cocker Spanial / King charles Spanial / Miniature Poodle / Definately foster a greyhound and if it suits they can then apply to have permanently. Lots of dog rescue organisations out there who would love to offer a puppy most of the pedigree breeds have rescue people listed. :)
  20. oh yer 2 weeks of baby puppy 12weeks old being grabbed and treated harshly while being dog sat while I was hospitalised ment all the good work was totally undone came home to a scared rabbit who ran and hid and would no longer come to me, has taken 3 months to build the confidence back up to a level of trust and even now in certain situations she will bolt and hide or keep extended distance between me and her. I just ignore pay attention to other dog and play with him and then voila she comes bounding in to join the fun. Dogs are like elephants they never forget :)
  21. I Had a dog with same situation and by total slow ardous process of elimination discovered (A) it was heralded by a certain puppy shampoo - this was removed and a specialised one used until dog got its adult coat when things improved dramatically,(b) Dog definately was aggravated by diet so a strict control was implemented no grains, no yeast and no colours preserves etc and again we saw a huge difference, he was also treated with anti histamine type medication as I did not want any steriod injections or tablets used, I also applied a very old fasioned horse remedy onto the affected skin (Rawleighs Salve) this is basically petroleum jelly or vaseline with a sulphur compound and a couple other ingredients, and this helped with the irritation preventing the dog scatching and biting, we used an old cotton throw rug with loose ties to shelter him from insects and also to stop him plastering the gel all over the house. He had oral supplements of fish oil and vitamin A, once we got on top of it and maintained the diet etc he never looked back and by 2 yrs old was a totally different dog, but it was very time consuming and a labour of love, never shown and never bred with both could have happened but we just decided as he seemed to be a very easily stressed dog this would only add to the problem. Its a hard call for sure so good luck with this one
  22. Definately - recent week long hospital stay came home to a depressed dog, he was very excited to have me home but took 2 weeks to really get settled again into his usual routine, just slept alot and kept following me around and coming and checking on me etc. When my partner and I broke up he spent months searching everywhere and slept on his side of bed on the pillow and when we would go out if he saw a male with a cap on he would pull my arm off trying to get to this person only to find it was not who he thought, it was all very sad really, it has been 3 years now and he still does this, so they don't forget.
  23. yes there are very responsible owners and then unfortuneately very iresponsible ones and there in lies the problem so the sooner a 'licence' to own a dog is brought in the better as this would require pre deterimed steps by people pre getting a dog and there would be no more impulse buying, and breeds specifically bred for illegal reasons would soon disappear. More times then not puppies and cuteness soon disappear and owners suddenly realise that this dog is now in their lives for at least 10yrs and costs etc start to add up and thats when problems begin While not related but still annoying is that so many backyard breeders are still selling non microchipped pups and silly people are diving in head first and parting with big bucks for them falling prey to scams that they are to naive to realise they are being taken. Stolen pups and non pedigree pups being passed off as pedigree are 2 examples.
  24. Yep ditto on this post similar to mine in last week, sick and tired of unthinking, uncaring people who have zilch understanding of how dogs react when 'leashed' or 'unleashed' and the various gaurding that occurs towards handler when a unleashed dog suddenly and dramatically approaches a leashed dog etc. Sooner government/councils realise that the laws are there to be enacted and start policing them the better
  25. Try jet pets they are awesome :)And reasonably priced.http://www.jetpets.com.au/?gclid=COfl7423s7ACFQolpQodlDW_Tw Here is list of all the pet cargo people available-> http://www.virginaustralia.com/cs/groups/internetcontent/@wc/documents/webcontent/~edisp/u_021083.pdf otherwise the guys down at DNata(toll Air) are very very helpful with purchase of suitable crate from Virgin (even if not flying with them), chose flight time carefully as last thing you want is dog flying in hottest or coldest part of day as allow for time in crate spent sitting on tarmac waiting to be loaded sometimes 10 mins or more in heat. https://www.tollairexpress.com/portal/page/portal/TOLL_AIR_EXPRESS/Home/Services/AirportToAirportInternational/InternationalAnimalPetTransport Other option is to find someone flying to perth who could act as passenger with accompanied freight. cost lot less. just as example an average dog and crate under 10kg = $55 from Brisbane to NTH QLD over 10kg $100 plus extra for every Kg over a certain weight. good luck
