  1. Kids, especially the young ones, are so unpredictable, the most well behaved children can do things that they can't explain. Having worked with children, even though it was only for a year or two, I have seen some strange things, even from the most mild mannered child!! Which is why it is best to never leave them with animals unsupervised.
  2. The dogmad's post has the Jack Russell running off leash in the park?
  3. Good to hear that woman is at least in a stable condition. http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/elderly-dog-attack-victim-in-stable-condition-20130824-2si4n.html
  4. To be honest, the ideal world isn't the real world. And cross breeding won't be stopped. Dog management and community education would be a better route to go down, in my opinion. And I don't mean enforced obedience training, I live about 400km from the nearest dog club and even then as you have to have your dog in a halti, I wouldn't be going. How about more rangers to enforce the rules we already have? Checking to make sure dogs are registered? Maybe they could even enforce proper fencing? More rangers to drive around and enforce leash laws? Ranger to go out and pick up roaming dogs, no matter what the hours are? I do like the idea of fining owners, no matter the circumstances, if a dog attacks another dog. Might encourage people to keep their dogs contained and under control. I know incidents occur outside peoples control but the majority are preventable.
  5. Just goes to show how different the news stories can be, read this compared to the summary of the radio report Yonjuro posted (please note this is not aimed at Yonjuro!) http://www.perthnow.com.au/news/western-australia/elderly-woman-mauled-by-dog-in-middle-swan/story-fnhocxo3-1226702742168 Now the dogs were in the house and the owner was home! Not that any of that is relevant to the poor woman, she now has to deal with the injuries
  6. How horrible for everybody there. As an Australian, it's hard to imagine that the Federal government allows this carry on. I mean 50,000 stray dogs? Why doesn't the Federal government step in and eradicate these poor dogs, so the community can have some peace?
  7. Why wouldn't they try and prevent it coming to an attack? Why not heavily fine people for letting their dogs continually roam?
  8. They can't place restrictions upon breeds not subject to BSL under the Customs Act as they have no legitimate grounds to ban specific breeds if challenged. They were probably advised that if someone took the matter to court, they would win such a case. Surely a business can regulate what cargo they carry? Not sure how the Customs Act can have a say in what flies domestically either?
  9. It is a very long article so I won't quote it. But there is no restriction to read it. http://www.smh.com.au/environment/animals/owners-bark-behind-their-dogs-bite-20130809-2rmvs.html
  10. I really have the pack drive problem with the boys and there are so many roos at the moment. Not easy trying to train two dogs, especially if their collars run off the one receiver They just have to walk with me until I have scanned every inch of the paddock. The collar has saved many roos(sometimes their drive is too strong and nothing will stop them), and snake issues. So they are on a real short leash (so to speak) at the moment. We are now experiencing problems with wild pigs, they haven't made it through the back fence but only a matter of time, so what then? I trained mine separately until they were solid and then went back to low distraction recalls with the two of them and then built up the distractions. Same as I did when training them separately. I also have the two collars with one receiver. I actually ended up using liquid paper and a marker to mark their initials next to the buttons.
  11. I do a lot of bush walking/trail running with my dogs, the e collar is a saviour for me. I can reliably walk/run both of them together and call them off of bunnies and roos. And once off a snake that had it's head raised when I noticed one of the dogs going for it Maybe I could have taught them through other methods but realistically how long would it take for me to train two dogs to not chase a roo or a bunny when they were together? I wasn't only dealing with prey drive but also pack drive. Can I also add, they are not cheap, so it's not like most people are going to just buy them without a bit of thought.
  12. The news.com.au article has a photo of the dear little boy and also the dog. I won't link, it doesn't feel quite right.
  13. So, out of interest, say you wanted a GSD as a pet, would you be able to get a working line GSD that would be suitable? Or would you be better to stick to show lines? Edit: Somehow I missed pepe01's post and I see that she/he answers this!
  14. I love my dogs. I don't necessarily love other people's dogs and I certainly don't expect other people to love mine. Its a work place, not doggy day care. Unless you're the business owner or work in an animal related business, I think dogs should stay home. I really don't think dogs and office buildings are a good combinatino. Dogs requiring nursing might be a bit different but why should people be expected to tolerate the presence of your dogs where they work. (I feel a bit the same about kids actually ) One person SHOULD be able to "ruin it" for all - it's not a majority vote that matters in such cases. A single voice in this instance should be listened to. No different to other workplace issues where what the majority think is OK makes an individual very uncomfortable. And as for tradies dogs - don't start me. : Considering it was a visit and not an extended stay, I can't see the issue. I don't particularly like other people's kids either, and don't make a fuss when they drop in and say hi. I also hate smelly lunches and strong perfume but as it is a work place other peoples needs and wants should be taken into consideration. No wonder we are becoming such an intolerant society. Edited to clarify my meaning of visit, dog being brought in by colleague on day off, on a leash, going to a section of the office where we all like to bring our dogs to show them off.
  15. Qantas have now lifted their ban. And brachy breeds also with conditions. http://www.news.com.au/travel/news/qantas-backs-down-on-controversial-american-staffordshire-terrier-ban/story-e6frfq80-1226690006001 Read more: http://www.news.com.au/travel/news/qantas-backs-down-on-controversial-american-staffordshire-terrier-ban/story-e6frfq80-1226690006001#ixzz2alb8acw4
  16. We used to get doggy visits from colleagues dogs until some one who didn't like dogs complained The dogs were always on leash and not allowed to approach people who didn't like them, sad that one person ruins it for all.
  17. Clean Run have them and also VetnPetDirect. You can get a three pack. http://www.cleanrun.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=3136&ParentCat=303 But vetnpetdirect seem to only have singles now http://www.vetnpetdirect.com.au/likety_stik_lickable_dog_treat
  18. I get mine off of Ebay, there is a couple of Australian companies on there.
  19. Personally I wouldn't. Unless the dog was menancing towards mine, I would just carry on and mind my own business. The dogs were called off and no harm done. It is scary when an unknown dog comes running towards you. We had a couple of incidences with our JRTx where I feared for his safety but thankfully, nothing came of them. But sometimes I think for a community that wants to become dog friendly, we are very quick to report everything and soon our community will be very intolerant of dogs.
  20. I feed frozen in summer, it's like a nice meaty iceblock! And as for the pig's head, knowing my luck I would serve that up and they would take one look at it and walk away. Then what the heck do I do with a pig's head They did that with whole sardines.
  21. There was another similar story with a well known brand and dog fighting. The brand had sponsored a show and the dog fighting ring used the sponsorship flags for their 'event'. The company had no idea until photos emerged on the net. Not sure if this is the same but care must be taken not to quickly write off a company due to unscrupulous acts.
  22. I have never come across a guide dog while I had my dog but I have always thought if it happened I would cross the road (if I could), so as not to 'distract', for want of a better word, the guide dog, but I must admit I was under the impression that if I couldn't that the guide dog would be trained to not interact with my dog, let alone lunge at it Surely these dog should be taken out of service?
  23. Unknown 368 compared to Staffords 158, my first thought was that it was the mixed breed that is the issue but who are they relying on to identify the breed that attacked, rangers, the public, the owner?
  24. I wonder how this would stand legally? I always thought that the onus was on the prosecuting party to prove 'guilt'. I have no experience in this, just was always my (basic) understanding of the law.
  25. I am confused as to why she would think a dog on a lead would make her dog reactive My experience is it is usually the dog on the leash that reacts. But yes, you did nothing wrong.
